Sayed-Khaiyum is acting PM

Fiji's Interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has been appointed Acting Prime Minister of Fiji.

A Department of Information press release on the Fiji Government website says that the interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama appointed Sayed-Khaiyum acting PM, while he attends the Asian Development Bank meeting in Indonesia.

The ADB meeting will be held from May 1st to the 7th. Sources have told Coupfourpointfive that travelling with Bainimarama is the Chairman of the Fiji Islands Trade and Investment Board, Francis Narayan, who is a New Zealand citizen, and newly appointed Reserve Bank Governor Sada Reddy.

Coupfourpointfive has been told that the meeting is usually attended by Reserve Bank Governors but Bainimarama insisted on going as well.

Sources say Bainimarama met with the Military Council yesterday afternoon to get their endorsement of Sayed-Khaiyum's acting appointment.

  2. As much as I want to see someone like Pita Driti to show loyalty to Fiji, I have not seen any sign of patriotism from him and others in army's top brass. Despite the fact that it is now very clear that the aim of the coup was to grab power and not end corruption as Bainimarama claimed much to the delight of Indians - Chaudhry and Khaiyum included. The clean-up campaign would have been their theme for their puppet Bainimarama to adopt and tell the world. But qhen the script changed for the worse very early after the coup, Driti and others kept their eyes and mouths shut. I wonder where is his conscience now that the script has been torn apart on the advise of the acting PM (khaiyum). And does Driti have a conscience at all or he too has sold his soul after getting a worthless medal? A greater tragedy far more lethal than Swine Flu awaits Fiji if the present thugs remain in power for six more months.
