Bainimarama wants to engage

Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has offered the Australian and New Zealand governments 'engagement at all levels'.

This engagement including trade and investment, among others, is offered on a level playing field in which Fiji's sovereignty and dignity is respected and maintained.

Bainimarama made the comment while delivering the keynote address at the Telecom Fiji Limited Prime Minister's Exporter of the Year Award on Saturday.

This award is the premier event to salute the achievement of Fiji's exporter's in the global trade arena and their contribution to the Fiji economy.

While the three governments recently had a diplomatic row, Bainimarama assured all Fijian businesses, Australians and New Zealanders that such issues will not affect trade, tourism, business co-operation, collaboration and investment.

"On the contrary we encourage more trade, investment and tourism between our traditional partners of Australia and New Zealand.

"I find it most encouraging that notwithstanding the recent events, tourism, trade and business associations and collaboration between our people have not been affected," he told those present Saturday night.

As well, Bainimarama urged participants, particularly businesses houses to expand their trade with all of Fiji's neighbors and seek constructive engagement with them.

"You all have the chance and ability to do so. Indeed you must do so - not just for your businesses but for Fiji and all Fijians," he said (AHN)

Interesting that Frank keeps saying he wants to talk and "engage" with Australian and NZ when they keep saying the opposite.

Stephen Smith, the Aussie Foreign Minister, said last week quote " It's a bit hard to have dialogue with a person who doesn't want to talk to you".

Who's telling the truth here? I suspect it's Frank who really wants to engage but the Aussies and Kiwis don't. They think that by shutting him out, they'll bring change in Fiji.

Is there any evidence of this happening? Wouldn't it be better to to get in his ear and try to achieve change by persuasion and encouragement?

Shutting him out hasn't made a jot of difference so why not take him at his word and talk? Makes sense to me at least.

@Anonymous ... what Stephen Smith failed to say was that Frank doesn't want to talk to them as unequals.
Australia & New Zealand have a real problem with the idea that, since they're used to talking down to us instead of straight.
God Bless Fiji.

If your neighbor's and friend's house was taken over by an armed gang with guns, the husband kicked out, the wife raped and children beaten up when they tried to come to their parents' aid....would you "engage" with the intruder/invader?

Oi, who'd want to be engaged to a Kiwi or an Aussie?

you guys are all nuts.

why would new zealand and australia want to engage on the same level with the pig who is unelected, represents no one except himself and his hangers on.

The person australia and nz should engage was marched out at gun point by the pig on 5/12/06.

That is the vote of the people as the choice of leadership belongs to them not those with an IQ of 0.5who monopolise guns in Fiji.

It's funny how some people are thinking from the wrong organ - I tell you it is not the Brain. How can one support Frank who is illegal. How hard is that to understand, man and the way some people are still hanging on to his bottom. Think straight man.

@ Anon

Australa and NZ do noy want to engage with a Dicktaker! They can only talk top people who were chosen by the people to represent them, Not somebody who thinks tat he knows what is good and what is bad for the people. Especially when this person is a simple boat captain!

Lai aint coming back, who cares, but we the lovers of democracy will be here and when our time comes we will ensure everyone involved in fucking up our lives will pay for it. Read this slowly so you will understand clearly Mr IQ 0.5 , "THE MILITARY IS FINISH" and we the people of Fiji will make sure of it be it next year, next five years or next 20 years.

Good will prevail over evil, just look at the south Africa story, Mendela was in jail for 28 years but ended up as president of south Africa.

we are laughing because even if you all die before it happens then hell beckons and our children will piss on your grave

Language, anon at 10.48, language!

There may be children accessing this site and they don't need to see the eff word here. Nor your alarming prediction of hell and damnation plus your extraordinary demand that they piss on my grave.

You should leave your kids to find their own way in life when it comes to toilet training, whatever splash you want to make yourself in the privacy of your own home.
