Military promotion for senior army officers

Military lawyer Mohammed Aziz and the army's Land Force Commander Pita Driti have been promoted to the rank of Brigadier. Both previously held the rank of Colonel.

Sources have confirmed that the promotion was announced to the troops last week.

They have also confirmed that some local media outlets were prevented from reporting on the promotion by the regime's censors.

Coupfourpointfive has been told that Driti who has been chosen to lead the next mission of 200 troops on a peacekeeping mission to Iraq, is now not going on the mission following his promotion to Brigadier.

Sources say military commander and dictator Frank Banimarama decided to reward Driti and Aziz after Driti's peacekeeping mission was thrown into doubt.

According to sources the United Nations has decided not to allow Driti to lead the mission because of the military's increasing role following the abrogation of the Constitution as well as its harassment and intimidation of civilians who are pro-democracy activists.

Document proves Sayed-Khaiyum's shady deal

Coupfourpointfive has obtained the land transfer document showing that the interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum sold his Berry Road property to Tappoos for an inflated $810,000.

We recently reported of the deal between Latifa Investments Ltd, owned by Sayed Khaiyum and his mother and Bright Star Invesments Ltd owned by Tappoos.

Tappoos bought Sayed Khaiyum's property for an over-estimated amount in return for a deal which was revealed later in the 2010 budget. The deal was that tourists could claim back only from duty free shops owned by Tappoos, VAT on duty free items.

Coupfourpointfive has obtained a copy of the Land Transfer lodged by Suva law firm Tikaram & Associates and signed by Sayed-Khaiyum. It also carries the common seal or stamp of Latifa Investments.

The document clear shows that two lots owned by Latifa Investments were sold to Bright Star Investment for $810,000.

Our sources have established that Sayed-Khaiyum bought the property for $350,000 in 2005.

If this is true then Sayed-Khaiyum made a profit of $460,000 in three years.
