Fiji's Minister of Defence, National Security and Immigration, Epeli Ganilau, has resigned but the reason for him quitting won't be known until Frank Bainimarama returns to the country.
Ganilau's sudden departure was announced by the Ministry of Information a short time ago with Sharon Smith-Johns saying only Bainimarama could reveal why Ganilau stepped down.
Adding to the mystery is the fact that Ganilau (pictured above right) quit while the illegally appointed leader was out of the country, China according to reports.
Ganilau resigned last night and had just been asked to accept the resignation of Pio Tikoduadua, the permanent secretary to Bainimarama.
Tikoduadua is expected to finish at the end of the month but Ganilau's successor has already been named.
Bainimarama is apparently away on a trade mission until early next week and there have been no reports of him returning earlier.

Yeah the cards keep tumbling down and the economy on the verge of collapse. The falling out of thieves have begun in earnest.
so the PS Defence going on leave as well...interesting rumbling and dumpling
Another one gone. They can run but they can't hide - can they khaiyum boys? You and the shameems have a lot to answer for....tik tok....tik tok....treason against Fijians is not a wise move.
I believe that the internal power struggle thats been going on for the past few weeks has resulted in these resignations. After the Ului/Driti removal all those who might have had a hand or close relations to them are also being removed as they are perceived as being a threat. Whether the power struggle is over remains to be seen. I however have no sympathy for these people who were instrumental in putting Frank where he is thinking that they could control him. Unfortunately as experienced by a lot of others before them a mad dog cannot be controlled by a leash and those who try get what they deserve. I hope you thieving lot are happy with filling your pockets with our taxpayer money for the past 4 years.
I can hear the coup apologists now saying this is 'nothing out of the ordinary', and how 'he bravely gave himself up to serve this illegal regime and his mission is completed'.No doubt his actual replacement will be another military type.
He will be sent to an overseas mission, may be in North Korea.

Get out now and prepare for the election???
Following in Mahen's footsteps??
Those famous words... No ministers serving in this governement will stand in the next election... remains to be seen.
They've been rejected so many times at polls. Piss off you family of thieves!
Another corrupt ex minister and opportunist Cekenasiga. We havent forgotten that this monster was involved in the affirmative action and the discrepancy of FJD$16M in LQ govt. Who is next to be PM/acting PM?
Might as well put the names in a hat and pick one at random, and you are sure to get another one corrupt to the bare bone. Sadly, such is the situation in Fiji.
If their is an election in Fiji today sadly who do we elect. As many of you have pointed out this country badly needs a great leader from any race. We need someone who can marry the aspirations of the i-taukei and hence win their respect and love and that same person should also be able to make all other races feel wanted and thus aspire to live and invest in this country. This should be the ultimate goal of any good government. Should any leader be able to get these 2 things right we will be on a sound footing to make Fiji trully the way the world should be. To find such a men or women will be difficult as none of our leaders from the past and the present have these qualities at all. I think it is time that young Fijians of all ethnic backgrounds in general should stand up and be counted and start preapring for the next elections. Ultimatly all of us in Fiji have the same aspirations and that is to have a strong democracy which allows for good governments to take power who inturn work for the betterment of all in this country.
I'd say we still do have some good, quality and untainted leaders from the past (within & outside of govts) and with the benefit of hindsight and experience of all we're going through, am sure they'll step up to the plate but only once these lot of losers piss off into oblivion.
