Lest we forget: Baini's promises when he toppled Qarase

Baini in 2006: "We trust that the new government will lead us into peace and prosperity and mend the ever widening racial divide that currently besets our multicultural nation."

Four years ago today Frank Bainimarama began his 'clean-up campaign', after months of speculation and rumours and an ultimatum for Qarase to meet the military's demands or resign.

It began on December 4 with the army confiscating ammunition at the Police headquarters in Nasinu then removing weapons from the armoury at Nasova Police Academy in Suva.

Shoppers and workers in Suva city had already got a whiff of what was coming via the coconut wireless and shops started to close as memories of the 2000 coup re-surfaced. Businesses were torched and looted during during that coup following a march by Nationalists.

Chaos broke out in Suva city as people scrambled to get taxis and buses to get home. After three coups in Fiji, people had come to know the rumours were usually right.

International and local media rushed to Nasinu to get pictures and to follow the unfolding drama. While there, they discovered the Nasova police base was being taken over and rushed back there.

At Nasova, soldiers packed their military trucks with weapons from the armoury and left. A few armed soldiers stayed to guard the armoury. Ironically, a police graduation was taking place on the grounds. The new recruits marched as the soldiers took over their armoury.

The Acting Police commissioner at the time, Moses Driver, called a press conference and said the military action was unlawful but Bainimarama said it had to be done to stop the police and army from fighting each other.

Roadblocks were set up at various places around Suva, including at Government House. Qarase tried to avoid the checkpoints by helicoptering to his home.

The next morning (December 5), soldiers surrounded the offices of government ministers and placed them under house arrest after taking their cars and phones.

Outside Qarase's house, media waited to see how the military would arrest the SDL leader, who was holed up inside. Police guards were outside.

A van with 3 soldiers drove up to his driveway and tried to enter the compound. They tried to convince police to let them through, but the latter refused. The van left.

Half an hour later two truckloads of soldiers arrived. They closed off the street to Qarase's house and chased the media away.

Qarase's supporters from the Methodist church arrived and started praying and singing. Everyone waited.

Frank Bainimarama was meanwhile meeting with President, Josefa Iloilo, who signed a legal order dissolving Parliament.

But a press release from Iloilo's office that same day said he did not endorse the coup and the soldiers were acting against his orders.

On December 6 at a press conference at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Bainimarama announced that he had taken control of the government and he had executive authority to run the country.

In his speech he accused Qarase of corruption and of being racist:

"As of today, the military has taken over the government ...RFMF over the years have been raising security concerns with the government, in particular the
introduction of controversial bills, and policies that have divided the nation now and will have very serious consequences to our future generations.

"These concerns have been conveyed to the Prime Minister in all fairness and sincerity with the country’s interest at heart.

"Apparently, all RFMF concerns were never accepted with true spirit. All my efforts to the government were to no avail. Instead, they turned their attention on the RFMF itself.

"Despite my advice, they tried to remove me and create dissension within the ranks of the RFMF; the institution that stood up and redirected the Nation from the path of doom that the Nation was being led to in 2000.

"Qarase has already conducted a ‘silent coup’ through bribery, corruption and introduction of controversial Bill.

"Our position can be differentiated from the Qarase Government which for example through the passing of the Reconciliation, Qoliqoli and Land Claims will undermine the Constitution.

"When the country is stable and the Electoral Rolls and other machineries of Elections have been properly reviewed and amended, elections will be held.

"We trust that the new government will lead us into peace and prosperity and mend the ever widening racial divide that currently besets our multicultural nation."

What Frank did not tell the people of Fiji was that their rights will be suspended for 8 long years. Based on lies and false promises of this illegal govt., I dont think 2014 will ever come.

@ Joe, If what we've been told constantly by this IR Iam with you that come 2014 there will be no elections, frank has been lying from day one ever since so, lets not get our hopes up for the 2014 elections, unless he comes up with a plan that will cement his hold onto power for a very long time....and that is to sack the President and he becomes the pres and his sidekick assshole the pm. Unless, the masses go on a peaceful march to demand their freedom back and petiton the pres to sack this IR and elect a care taker government to prep the nation for an early election.

A leading Pacific islander has already said that Fiji is the HAITI of the Pacific. Thanks to the GCC (since 1987) whom Frank sent to drink home brew under the mango tree this day in 2006. A wise man said that tribulation comes before peace. So, those of us who have hope for this fair land and have chosen to remain despite the consequences, if our tribulation is in the the form of an illegal government which practises contradiction with worse to come, then, let this be our tribulation till our situation changes for the better. To those who have suffered from this 2006 coup, through loss of income family and friends, you are the champions and believe me, you are God's favoured children who're used for God's purpose - not the ones with money to squander and happily gambling with our lives. Cry not, my beloved land.

If the President is in any doubt - or is confident about Taukei support for where we as a people are being taken - why doesn't he ask - confirm it? Call it a plebiscite - referendum - whatever?
Simple cost effective 2 horse race
- Nailitkau V Qarase - vote confined to Tailevu - Suva Rewa corridor - as this appears to be the epicentre of Viti's ongoing unrest.

With all these allegations of corruption in the Interim government could someone provide some evidence.

I see that the current governement has finally made Fiji Waters pay the increased 15% tax. Now this must have been due some corrupt previous politicians receiving bribes.

Four years to the day the most egregious government Fiji has ever witnessed was unceremoniously booted from office.

On this the fourth anniversary the pendulum have swung in favour of those who were subjected to inequitable treatment by some of the most voracious individuals that walked the halls of government.

Four years on Fiji is the country to die for where equitable treatment is distributed right across the board where no one nationality is favoured more than the other.

Fiji can and will get better as time goes on aren’t we glad we have seen the last of the most impaired government which was cockeyed.

Viva Fiji.

This illegal junta (unless we have all forgotten put itself in place with the use of weapons by the feral and poorly led military) is not only corrupt but has committed human rights abuses and murder on innocent Fijians. The illegal treasonous criminals are filling their pockets with taxpayers money - even mongoose sa rauta didn't vote for them. As in other places where non elected terrorists have taken over nations using illegitimate power - they need to be eliminated. fiji needs to return to good democratic governance and the rule of law - not the judicial sham that now exists.

Who cares what Voreqe said.

Sir Khaiyum and Fiji Indians are in total control and have the indegenous fijians especially the dumb fijian soliders under our spell.

sorry Fiji but the real reason for staging the coup was for my hero VB to escape jail sentence and losing his job as army commander. sdl/labour govt should not have renewed VB's contract. everyone in QEB knows that he was not a capable leader & thats why he terminated his snr officers. all other reasons was just an excuse. moce democracy bula dictator Fiji.

you are quite right, those of us who have suffered since 2006 have done so in silence, eating baigan, dhal, bele and cassava as the only thing we can afford. At least we sleep peacefully at night - a small consolation.

What that Litiana Bainimarama (Voreqe's daughter) is CEO Sports Council ... God help Fiji!!! What does she know, what qualification, what experience?

This is the daughter who came for the sister's wedding from NZ and could not return because NZ did not allow her to go back, so don't know what her husband is doing in NZ. Last I heard, he is still in NZ army and couldn't be bothered to come fetch Litiana.

This Litiana her new home cashed by Chaudhary.

Now she is CEO of Sports Council??? What a joke!!!
