Opinion - Rugby council loses trust in board

by Amit Raj - Fiji Times
The Council of the Fiji Rugby Union, among other things, is responsible for the appointment and replacement of the directors of the union.

The media release of the current FRU board misrepresents locally and abroad the true situation at Rugby House in Fiji.

A majority of that council (18 affiliated unions), due to what they consider a failed and mismanaged FRU lottery saga, as well as many other issues, have lost trust and confidence in the ability of the current directors at Rugby House to meet the expectations of all member unions and the public in promoting first and foremost the interests of rugby.

The current actions of the board to unilaterally cancel a scheduled special general meeting mandated under the current FRU constitution is regrettable, and further reinforces the views of a majority of the council that the board is acting in its own interests and not in accordance with the wishes of its appointing council, which had not been given the opportunity to discuss such a drastic measure by the board.

The board has used the International Rugby Board (IRB) as an excuse for itself contravening the provisions of the FRU constitution.

The council members that make up a majority of the votes for the Fiji Rugby Union, welcome the scheduled visit of representatives of the IRB, and invite the IRB to meet with and discuss the future management and control of rugby in Fiji with the elected members and delegates of the FRU council, not solely the current FRU board of directors or CEO.

To get a fairer and balanced view of the situation here in Fiji.

At the end of the day, the board is answerable to the FRU council, not the IRB.

These internal democratic mechanisms within the FRU are completely independent of the Fiji government and whether or not it decides to financially assist the board of the FRU that has failed to procure adequate funding for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, despite its best efforts.

It is unfortunate that the board has attempted to use the media to resolve internal issues at Rugby House, further eroding the reputation and credibility of Fiji rugby locally and abroad.

The rugby public in Fiji are behind the FRU council that constitute the Fiji Rugby Union. It is they, the Fiji public that support a majority of the council's voting members and affiliated unions that are dissatisfied with the overall performance of the board and its chosen CEO.

Sack the FRU Board. Their behaviour is unprofessional and corrupt. Voreqe should keep his grubby hands out as well.
Get the Minor Unions to vote in totally new Board.

Amit Raj should from Fiji Times should know that IRB is the world governing body for rugby and tell Vore to stop using people doing his duka job.

Who is this goose Raj writing about Fiji rugby? How predictable that he is indo fijian given the crap he has written. As an international observer I have every confidence in the FRU executive. All Fijians I have spoken to are behind the executive. I do however have no respect or confidence in the coup sucking Commerce Commission and the Reddy character? and I certainly have no regard for tis Raj character and his bollywood rag the Fiji Times. How quickly that respectful discerning newspaper turned into a roti wrapper?

Useless people in the FRU whose lack of imagination has made Fiji rugby drift backwards anyway. This is one area maybe where Bainee might actually be helpful. Kick them out wholesale, they've been in there too long causing stagnation in Fiji's game. The mismanagement of the lottery is a mere tip of the iceberg. How can the Fiji team be a winning combo when they don't even have the finesse to organise a successfull lottery? Not up to the calibre required!!

Amit Raj, you are either ignorant, whihc I doubt; or you have been threatened tro write this bullcrap. The Rugby Council that you quote has been infiltratred by Voreqe. His nomination for chairman is his brother inlaw! Dont you find that strange. His daughter is the CEO of the Sports Council. The Voreqe chairman is a murderer who because of his brother in law managed to get out of prison without serving his sentence and while receiving full pay. Amrit you must understand that at times like tis it is important to stand by principles. The FRU under the present board has done what no previous board has done - keep Fiji Rugby solvent at a time when the cost of the game has spiked astronomically in relative terms. The IRB has invested so much more that the Fiji government in Fiji Rugby. See Amrit - what you are seeing now is the coup pattern that Voreqe employs. He uses other people - if it does not work he runs away. Only whenh he is sure that all is well does he show his face. The present board was instrumnetal in taking Fiji to the last quaterfinals. I think they will take Fiji to the semis this time.

To the blogger of this article, congratulations to you for a very balanced and fair reporting.Rather than blaming VB & the government for interference you have finally grasped the truth behind the saga at the Rugby House.
The writing has been on the wall for a long time that the current board is not working in the best interest of Rugby in Fiji.Hats up to the FRU Council in standing upto the Council and saying enough is enough. Can the affliated members of Fiji Football Association do the same and kick the current board out together with its President? Its long overdue and I urger the blogger of this article to touch on this issue once this FRU saga is over.By the way I will be at the Wellington Sevens to cheer for our boys.

Amit may have a point in proper governance however he is off the mark in terms of how the board functions and to whom it is responsible to. He is also remarkably silent on the legality and ethics of the conditional $3m offer made by the illegal and corrupt minister, Filipe Bole.

The FRU board represents the interest of affiliate unions and in general, the public at large however it must be allowed to act independently if it were to be efficient.Insofar as the FRU constitution and how the IRB is concerned, all the democratic processes in relation to board governance has been fulfilled and any issues must be allowed to be dealt with internally. The same applies to any democratically elected board.

The board also has the prerogative of hosting a special AGM as requested by an affiliate member. No detail is yet known whether this has occurred but if it did,the board can refuse this request dependent on triviality and the costs associated. The requesting member may then seek the assistance of the courts dependent on leave.

I mentioned triviality and costs because the actual and contentious incidents surrounding the lottery must be put in perspective. This is important because the current smear campaign is beginning to take that familiar and ominous form of the fraudulent and disastrous "clean up campaign" of 2006 with the same actors involved with a slight twist...eg. a corrupted military and tainted media. A supposedly flawed lottery project is hardly an excuse for convening a special AGM in much the same light as a company enduring a failed marketing campaign for its product or services. The issue here is one of weak internal controls in relation to the lottery project and the person's directly could either be reprimanded and proper measures taken to compensate consumers however this is hardly grounds for replacing an entire board. This is not to say that the lottery must be taken lightly but sanity must prevail and due processes should be allowed to function. Everyone can rest assured that the IRB and the FRU will at the end of the day make its own recommendations for the best interests of rugby.

The FRU is in the hands of a democratic process but what can be said the opportunistic stab from an undemocratic representaive in Filipe Bole who made an conditional offer of $3m to the FRU if the entire board was replaced? This statement is devious to say the least because Bole understands that he could never say that under a properly elected and democratic parliamentary system without the proper accountability and transparencies. The $3m is neither his nor his master Voreqe but belongs to the people of Fiji. His irresponsible actions are tantamount to bribing and inciting corruption in much the same way the Mafia threw dollars at the first hired gunman who got rid of a known enemy. His actions are also undermining the processes of a democratically elected FRU board which represents the will of the people and the democratic institution of the IRB.In effective he is urging members to circumvent the constitution and conduct a board coup at the promise of big bucks.

Why is Amit silent? We are all aware that in the past, the media in Fiji inclusive of the Fiji Times were highly censored by the military in terms of criticizing the illegal junta but on the other hand the company had refrained from publishing the type of mischievous propaganda like Bole's. It seems that Amit's one-sided article confirms that the Fiji Times has compromised its standards and at best the article should be treated as a piece of Fiji military propaganda trash.

The public should show their discontent with the current management of FT by avoiding their website and not purchasing its newspapers....and as for those like Amit.. bastards!!!!

With a lot being said already, kindly note that Keni and Bill did not takeover the positions at FRU. Member unions invited and voted them in, even to the point when they were no longer willing to be part of the FRU. They did it for the love of 'Fijian Rugby' and expecting nothing in return. Just ask the boys at FRU (past & current)about how these two gentlemen have been using their personal resources (especially money) doing the work at FRU. Its so easy for people to forget good deeds and criticise without knowing the truth.
