Speight in custody at Nabua!

The politician Sam Speight was picked up by the military last night for distributing pro-democracy material.

He is believed to be still with soldiers at Nabua.

Coupfourpointfive has been told Speight was taken in for distributing DVDs from the Fiji Democracy Movement.

The videos feature pro-democracy advocate Suliasi Daunitutu.

The member for Tailevu North is one of several people to have been taken in recently for questioning.

The blog, Intelligentsiya, reported earlier that Felix Anthony from the Fiji Trade Union Congress was beaten at an empty house near the military compound.

The Fiji Times reporter Felix Chaudhry and Gaffar Ahmed from Ba are also reported to have been in military custody recently.

Another to have been at the hands of military was New South Wales based pensioner, Apisai Tawake, (see earlier Coupfourpointfive story), in December last year.

Tawake's story has prompted some questions, including whether his injuries were verified by medical authorities.

Coupfourpointfive has asked and has been told by a source close to Tawake that he did not get medical treatment while in Fiji because he was too traumatised, but he did take pictures of himself.

We're told he still walks with a limb and has a swollen wrist.

Coupfourpointfive has also been told Apisai Tawake has been an Australian resident for 20 years and is not seeking a visa or residency.

Editor's Note: We have been notified that Sam Speight has now been released. (5pm)

Must know Stan - understand his confusion. 3 identical coups - 2 walk 1 doesn't. Offer of AUS repatriation of AUS citizen brother rejected.
Define torture - hypocrisy?

If this man can support his allegations by way of a Medical report than maybe I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

However there is no proof to suggest he was beaten at the hands of the Fiji Military.

Having taken photograph's of his supposed injuries isnt good enough because it could well be injuries he sustained whilst in Australia.

Croz and his pro regime bloggers will dismiss any of these alleged incidences as 'you need to break a few eggs to get a system that the military is aatified with'. What's the bet that even if true , you will hear nothing from them despite the lip service to protect human rights. This is what you get when you don't 'toe the line', and have the audacity to hand out material or have an opinion, but a price that Croz appears perfectly compfortable with, from NZ.

I am sure that you would agree (in your search for more evidence) that it is hardly likely that:

(a) the soldiers responsible would own up to torturing this man;

(b) the soldiers took pictures; or

(c) the soldiers allowed the man they are attacking to take pictures.

Noone has said whether or not a medical report exists. In any event, as you point out, medical reports would be problematic - all that could show is that he was injured at some time - evidence in this case would be more about circumstantial evidence, i.e. he identifies those who did it (stat dec or affidavit), they defend themselves and the truth invariably comes out about how he got his injuries.

The best thing about the stat dec is that it is relatively recent and has more probative value because a defence's argument about his version of events would centre on his recollection of the events - the more time passes, the less value is placed on his testimony, unless he has something to help his recollection, like this stat dec.

I have seen video evidence given shortly after a bashing by the army - it is quite good because it shows the injuries and a live recording of a person's recollections.

A stat dec is even better because a false declaration, as you have pointed out, is a criminal offence in Australia.

Dictators and Military Thugs said...

There is no place in the world for dictators and military thugs - and that includes Fiji. Throughout the Middle East and North Africa we are witnessing dictators, their families and military thugs being taken out - this is the year to destroy ALL dictators, their families and supporters - whatever it takes to remove and eliminate vermin. And the Fijian dictator, cowardly military thugs and corrupt collaborators are vermin.
They are responsible for terrible human rights abuses and murder - the question we ask is WHY do coup collaborators and supporters such as the illegal CJ Gates, the illegal SG Pryde, and the disgusting sharon smith johns openly support (and benefit financially from) such a terrible regime? One understands the support of Croz Walsh whose blog recently spoke about 'standing on the throats' of those with the courage to stand up to these thugs and criminals - that statement sums up Walsh and his family!

@Jake - why do you find it so hard to believe this man was beaten by the army when its been well documentated that they have done much worse beatings to other civilians including women in the past? What possible reward could there be for him to go to all this trouble for lies? You really need to start thinking for yourself and accept some realities otherwise it just encourages us to think that you're just a military goon wasting taxpayer money commenting on this blog.

Annon @ 5.09.

You can be rest assured of this fact I am nor never was ever paid by the Fiji military.

I dont need Fijian taxpayers money to sustain my life style.

I am very capable of thinking for myself I should do after all I have spent the last three and half scores doing just that and very successful at it but also have amassed a vast amount wealth doing it.

Sam's a nice guy but he and others like him must remember that we're under Military rule, a much better one though than those in other countries because these soldiers help the poor build their homes, help chase conmen troublemakers out of squatter land - in short, they make Fiji a safer place for the common people and visitors ashore - except of course for those who're out to make trouble.
And to all bloggers who childishly berate the soldiers for beatings etc. let me just remind you all that as a native Fijian, I was so ashamed back in 1987 when I saw Fijian thugs beat up defenceless old Indian people during those dark, dark days. NOTHING, NOTHING is going to take us back to native Fijian supremacy. We tried but failed baleta ni da sa rui tamata kocokoco ka dokadoka. Like I've said before, Jake is a 70 yo indian man who now lives in Hawaii ( ie a democracy). He's enjoying the pension in Hawaii and from there he tells people that they should put up with a Dictatorship
What a hypocrite!
Not only that, if you look back at all his postings you can see that the poor guy now has early onset dementia.
But there is also a hint of may be past sexual abuse as he is constantly referring to "sodomy" "rectosigmoid" "cici" etc etc.
The man is definitely sick.
Often times in the past I've suggested to him that he get a mental health assessment (for his sake)
We care about you Jake, and I hope that you do get assessed, because you are definitely losing the plot.

Just called Ana, wife of Sam Speight, as of now still no news of his whereabouts. She is very worried and pleading to people to pray for Fiji and her husband. This is not easy for her as she has been traumatized before in similar situations.
Whoever said he is being released is lying. The military holds people for long when they have been beaten up to hide the evidence.
Whatever happens now these thugs know their time is fast running out!

We can be sure until a dead body is mailed with a copy a coroners report to croz, he will never accept that anything of this kind could ever happen under the rainbow regime he cravenly supports and markets, at any cost to the locals. While quick to find any morsel of media misreporting, is not so inclined to find any dirt on his favorite military regime, but is quick to ask his friends at the ministry of misinformation to confirm his doubts...on yer CRoz for your fearless reportage and investigative journalism.

I believe Jake for other evidence from mr Tawake. He is not the first victim, at list one piece of evidence from the doctor (medical report) will clear my mind.

Speight was never released and he is still being detained against his will as we speak..

Such silly acts by this illegal regime only serves to scare investors away and harden the hearts of other countries. Moreover, citizens will hate Bainimarama even more and I am certain that he will be the first ex commander executed by firing squad in Fiji....mate yani sonalevu!!

It is now 10:05 local time in Fiji. Have just talked to Ana the wife of Sam, she has not been, notified of Sam's whereabouts and state. His mobile phone keeps diverting.
Please emphasize that he has not been released. Also incarcerated is former Land Force Commander, Pita Driti.

Jake sounds like that other notorious Bainimarama bumchum, Jim Anthony.

Whilst the citizens of Fiji are being gagged by the military censorship on the media he unashamedly takes advantage of the freedom in this blog to praise the so-called progress of a traitor and murderer. Jim Anthony is also famous for unashamedly siphoning off a significant amount of taxpayers’ funds in exchange for misguided research to help the equally misguided Military aka Peoples Charter.

Like Jake, he is from the old school of corrupt and washed up opportunists whose personal loyalties shifts to and fro like the desert sands. The illegal regime is littered with similar unsavoury characters “uch as Jim Ahkoy, Filipe Bole, Epeli Ganilau, Epeli Nailatikau and Inoke Kubuobola. These conmen are synonymous with entrenching cancerous and systemic corruption into government structures. Like true Bakewas they latch on to corrupt military commanders like Voreqe who as the saying goes, "Dictators are not capable of creating their own opportunities, they just steal them". The same applies to blind fools like Jake who jump on the bandwagon.

Don't be surprised if he replies to this post with his usual, “I love Bainimarama diatribe...” because this imbecile is one uniform loving gaylord who thinks the sun rises and sets out of his a/h.

Get a life Jake, because Bainimarama and his foolish cronies are nothing more than common criminals who feed off the plight of innocent and hardworking civilians and his kind is the reason why citizens resort to the gallows to rid them of this evil.
Fiji will never accept reconciliation with these clowns until they face justice first and believe me Saddam got off easy....bastards!!!

I can surely pray for Sam Speight and for his safety. But I cannot pray for Fiji because those who politicised land renewals to those hands that feed us, made too many families young, old and children starve and get thrown in squatter lifestyle.

How can Fiji be blessed until that all is corrected and apologised for?

True Christain believes in Bible and Bible speaks about curse.

Do you think those familites thrown out from land would be blessing Fiji?

Too much talk from the likes of Jake Ceke! Whats all this nonsense about medical evidence you idiot. What do you know about medical evidence.
This old man was beaten up by thugs and terrorists and thats the fact.
Why will Tawake put himself into trouble by signing before a JP? It makes no sense,. here is the truth and listen up.
Hundreds of Fijians of all races have been beaten up since December 2006. These are only a few cases we know about, the majority of cases we never hear about and thats a fact. We also think they military is good and nice, its all bullshit.
They have already killed a few of our people and they continue to beat more each day.
They will all go to prison in the future...you can run but you can never hide.

@ Anony Feb, 23 1:29pm Bainimarama made the coup because he was afraid of being arrested for the crime he did in 2000: treason for abrogating the constitution, mutiny against the late president Ratu Mara and the murdering of the CRW. Take note: He will hang on to power to keep him from going to jail with his cronies, also of what happen after 2006.

“Too much talk from the likes of Jake Ceke! Whats all this nonsense about medical evidence you idiot. What do you know about medical evidence”.

No ceke listen here boy I will say this any drongo including you can with the help of a JP effectuate a statutory declaration this could range from a sex change among other things name change an or anything in between that takes your fancy.

Now this man claims to be beaten at the hands of the military panacea because all we have at the moment is his word by way of a Stat-Dec there is nothing apart from the photograph taken of him by him for the purpose of compensatory damages.

At this very moment it’s his word against the military in a court of law if he was to produce his Stat-Dec it would be ruled inadmissible because there is no medical evidence to support his claims.

What compounds his problem is this he did not seek medical treatment whilst in Fiji nor did he seek medical treatment on his return to Australia he must like everybody else that you claim to be brutalise at the hands of military produce facts or medical reports pertaining to their beatings or such claims will be inadmissible.

“This old man was beaten up by thugs and terrorists and that the fact”

If that is the fact than the whole world is waiting for such facts or prove that the military is culpable.

Don’t delve into the depths of your idiocy and make suck spurious claims without providing facts.

The question that must be asked if this person is an anti regime supporter than why did he want to thank Bainimarama for the wonderful job in Kadavu.

“Why will Tawake put himself into trouble by signing before a JP? It makes no sense,. here is the truth and listen up”

Because there are ulterior motives at play here driven by some of the most pernicious individuals there in Australia unfortunately this person without realising is been made a scapegoat.

“Hundreds of Fijians of all races have been beaten up since December 2006. These are only a few cases we know about, the majority of cases we never hear about and thats a fact. We also think they military is good and nice, its all bullshit”

Again facts only medical reports would be very crucial in any court case.

“They have already killed a few of our people and they continue to beat more each day”

Provide cogent evidence than maybe I will consider my position on the matter enough already of your juvenile imputation.

“They will all go to prison in the future...you can run but you can never hide”

At the moment they aren’t running nor hiding the only one who seem to be very gutless at the moment is you.
