Major development: NZ now saying it may let Roko Ului Mara into the country

The New Zealand Herald is reporting Roko Ului Mara, who has taken refuge in Tonga, may be allowed into the country despite the travel sanctions.

This story was filed by the newspaper a short time ago under the heading "NZ may yet admit Fijian fugitive"

By Claire Trevett

The Government is considering removing travel sanctions on the former Fiji Army officer who faces an extradition hearing after fleeing to Tonga, says Prime Minister John Key.

Fiji yesterday lodged an application to extradite the former commander of its infantry regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara.

He is facing a charge of making seditious comments and was on bail when he was picked up by a Tongan Navy vessel and taken to Tonga last week, where he is being housed by the King.

A key figure in the 2006 coup, he is now criticising the Bainimarama regime, including saying yesterday that New Zealand and Australia needed to take a harder line and "use more force to bring this regime down".

Mr Key said New Zealand would continue to stay out of the issue between Fiji and Tonga.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was considering removing the colonel from the sanctions list.

Although the fugitive was clearly no longer part of the regime, the Government had to consider issues such as family links. His brother-in-law is Fiji's President.

Fiji's Solicitor-General, Christopher Pryde, said the extradition request was sent yesterday and Fiji had asked Tonga's Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, to expedite it. He said there was a clear case to answer.

Mr Pryde rejected claims Lieutenant Colonel Mara would not be able to get a fair trial in Fiji, saying there was no interference by Government in the courts' decisions.

Tonga's Public Enterprises Minister, Clive Edwards, said his Government had not yet seen the detail of the charges so he could not speculate. However, the list of crimes for which Tongan law allowed extradition did not include sedition-related offences.

Refusing to allow extradition could be seen as a further snub by Tonga of Fiji.
Pacific commentator Dr Crosbie Walsh - a qualified supporter of Commodore Frank Bainimarama's stated goals for Fiji - said the situation was embarrassing for the commodore but he believed Lieutenant Colonel Mara's actions were personal and the issue would subside quickly.

"We all know Fiji is divided ... but I don't really think Tevita can split the military from Bainimarama," he said.

So this would be John Key's coup ?

Quite Frankly ( pun intended ) who couldn't see this coming ?
I wouldn't be surprised if from New Zealand, Ului Mara and others aren't given Political Asylum in Australia.
A coup of our own, now that's a coup !

But Ratu Mara is a freedom fighter and does not need political asylum.. what he needs is some genuine help in bringing down this illegal regime..

Interesting developments, ummm so NZ wants to get involved now. Why not? Go for it NZ show Frank who's da boss.

By the way, where's Sitiveni Rabuka the man who started all this? Since he started everything, he should be the one to put an end to all of this!

After this we will just go back to the way things were, baini and his taliban wife leading Fiji, Ului Mara is just hot air, running away the fag because he didn't get to eat a piece of the pie that baini was eating. No guns now with his arrogant mouth he use to have up at the military camp now with his tail behind his back, well they will all do the same baini and the whole lot once you take away the gun them you see the scared little puppies barking up the neighbourhood.Poor Ului should we feel sorry for him NO!

The BainiArse taliban "Government" summed up neatly:

"An unconstitutional act is not a law; it confers no rights; it imposes no duties; it affords no protection; it creates no office; it is in legal contemplation as inoperative as though it had never been passed. NORTON V. SHELBY COUNTY, 118 U. S. 425 (1886)

As I predicted some days back. Possible repatriation to NZ or Aussie. We've seen it happen in the past - Sam Speight being allowed back into Australia after serving time on Nukulau. Mahendra Chaudhry allowed to travel to Aussie as soon as he was kicked out of the interim-government.
Both, NZ and Australia will work in their own interests at all times and if Roko Ului can be a trophy for them in their fight with Bainimarama, exceptions will be made for him - even though others, not aligned to the military often have their visas rejected because they've got court cases pending against them.
The over-riding factor in all of this, though, is Mara himself and how much he has to offer that we, and Australia and NZ, don't already know. And some might be dissappointed to find that he really doesn't know all that much more about the day-to-day thieving that Bainimarama and Khaiyum have been doing. He may well know more about the military - and it's only there that we can accept what he has to offer as having some (but not 100 percent)credibility.
Yes, there has definitely been a "coup" of sorts here: i) Mara gets "rescued" by the Tongan Navy in Fiji waters; (ii) The Tongans welcome extradition papers and take the opportunity to tell Bainimarama that his court system is suspect; (iii) A New Zealand warship arrives in Nuku'alofa (where Mara just happens to be) on a supposedly goodwill/training mission (while the Forum Trade Ministers meet on Vavau) a day's boat ride away from Nuku'alofa (iv) Key says they may allow Mara to travel to NZ - the announcement comes the same day extradition papers arrive in Tonga! (If Mara leaves Tonga, and goes to NZ,then new extradition papers will need to be filed - he can then go back to Tonga and again, new extradition papers will need to be filed) Khaiyum and Pryde are being f**cked - legally!!!! (A taste of their own medicine)!!!

Well it will be better for Roko Ului to go to NZ as this will ease the stand off or govt relations or hostilities with our brothers from Tonga.

Who the hell is Crosbie Walsh,is he Chris Pryde elder brother or wanahau?

Roko Ului has already said that he will answer to the people of fiji when Bainikaiyum govt has been toppled or cease to exit. So let's support him and move quickly in ending this dictatorship in our beloved country.
Spill the bean faster Roko Ului.

We need a leader right now that have the guts to stand up to this army and mobilise the support of the vanua, church and any other communities that is not happy with this present govt.

At the moment life is getting very very hard over here in fiji to feed, clothe and send our children to school. Prices of everything has all gone up and crime has gone up 5 fold as people has turn to crime to feed themselves.

Was wondering what did Ex-CP Esala teleni really did with his brother's church promising the nation that there will be less crime this year from last year???

What has happen now?? BIg Zero & NOTHING & PROMISES AND LIES!!

There is a bigger gap with the rich and the poor now that can be seen around the country. It is very sad and makes you shed some tears. It's a waste of tears as nothing is happening to stop this rot and people are having enough in their plates now and starting to be immune from all this things and hate has started to build in slowly.

This is not the Fiji that i grew up in!!

All the people in fiji are crying to get this govt stopped, so life can return to normal and have peace once again and not worried about what you can say freely anytime & anywhere from all section of the comunnities whether kai dia,kai jaina, kai viti, kai valagi, kai rotuma, kai loma & we are all still human beigns.

The ROT HAS TO STOP!!!

This is not the time to discriminate Roko Ului or ostracize him for the part he played in the 2006 coup.

We must unite and take every chance we can get to remove Khaiyum and Frank. If Roko Ului is allowed into NZ to aid the NZ Govt to remove the two wanted, it can only be a good thing. Roko Ului could be the link for NZ and Australia to keep the relationship between the countries open. It must now stay open and Fiji cannot be isolated anymore for the fear of China and India's huge influence.

I see some of you are still blogging as if the coup was only a few weeks old instead of going on 5 years.

Frankly Frank is too dopey to orchestrate a coup and Khaiyum wouldn't have been chosen by the Indians but the main coup perpetrator, the mastermind, which I believe to come from Roko Ului's family. This is the truth we want to hear from Roko Ului. We also know his father was the mastermind of the Rabuka coup. For the time being let us unite with Roko Ului for the sole purpose of removing Frank and Khaiyum.

read home page of fiji.gov.fj. VB states that Tonga Naval extracted RU from Fiji waters. this is on the (illegal)governments home page. Tonga government better clarify this first before handing RU to Fiji.

oh man isnt this good to watch? i had said long ago that a dictator never survives and fb is on the way out. aiyas should also be made to pay - BIG TIME.

NZ govt is salivating...if they can pull this off and get the coward to NZ, than Fiji will be forced to apply to them for extridiction. The matter of the coup, will be tried in a NZ court and all those involved will be exposed in an independent court free from political interferences....oh what a day it will be !!!! Well that should set the staege later for a ICJ matter with nz as state party against the regime.
The regime knows this so they will do everything to ensure that mara does not go to NZ, even if it means backing off with the Tongans. The best they can do is not pursue mara and let him fad into oblivian

NZ should take a cautios approach as army officers can change words to suit no one but them....I think NZ among other through tests should include a lie-detector test on Ului before considering allowing him to NZ because you never know and this can be a bad precedent as well...on the other hand this is pay back time for ANZs so if Rokoura, Aziz and Tikoitoga defected as well then the game is over for Franky, Aiyarse and Naivalurua......the shadowy figures will be hunted down as well but that's not too hard because we know where they leave...unfortunately the massive damage to the Fiji economy cannot be reversed so Ului has to to be answerable to the ordinary people through an independent judiciary or Court of Law when the country returns to normal. God bless Fiji

I knew it - ultimate aim was to get to NZ or OZ ,,,, meanwhile back here at home soldiers keep on getting paid and feeding their families, villages keep on presenting apologies to Frank, the economy keeps on crumbling, etc etc while the loudmouths JB, Ului etc keep on barking from overseas without the guns and uniform which used to give them arrogance and power.

NZ and Australia can make use of Ului to bring down Bainimarama's govt.

Suggest NZ find a way to sprint Driti to NZ as well then make use of them to bring down Bainimarama

Maumau You are forgetting that the rule of law exists in NZ. Roko Ului will be able to get a fair trail.

It is not up to NZ and Aust to remove Frank and Khaiyum from power. All they can do is notify the UN, but their influence can go a long way.

Take it slowly guys, one thing at a time and let us allow Roko Ului, to find the best advice for the next step. We have waited nearly 5 years, we can wait longer but this time we have to get it right so coups are dead, buried and cremated for ever.

NZ wanting to come to the party now?Where were you & Australai all this time? I would trust both of these 2 countires right now NZ is trying its best to please FIji-because it realises its not only losing business but the idea by big brother Australia is not going any where. Roko Ului needs to be very weary of going to either of this 2 places-much better off in Tonga. As if the Fijian army seals will want to mount an operation to bring him back to Fiji? Last time they had a war the Tongans kicked our butts!

In NZ we don't hang people to death. After all violence only begets violence. This is why Fiji is the way it is today.

@Anon. 4:12 PM. AMEN. AMEN. AND AMEN!!!

@ anon 2.17;
If Driti & Lui were to do the coup they would have when the two love birds frank and aias were out of country.

These two did not have the balls, but it seems frank feels that they may come back to bite is why they got chopped.

Therefore they were still loyal soldiers/commanders of RFMF.

And yes NZ forgives those who may be a part of the instructing authorities for torture and killing innocent victims of RFMF.

I think Frank B should offer Croz Walsh Mara's former post. I think he'll enjoy being saluted to in person in Fiji.

I agree with Mara...there should have been robust methods against this regime, an embargo the day of the coup that strangled the Fijian military of any support or money. If this had been done we would not be dealing with it five years later. The bleating about not wanting 'the fijian people to suffer' is spineless garbage and rather typical of Aus, NZ UN etc where they would rather take a spineless ineffective but annoying measure that draw out this saga for years rather than a strategy that is very quick and painful but effective.
