Supporters fear Mara may be a target as he moves to gather support to topple Bainimarama

The announcement by Roko Ului Mara he plans to travel the Pacific to rally support to try to bring down Fiji's illegal regime has sparked fears he could be assassinated.

Supporters worry Mara's criticisms and revelations, including the controversial claim that Frank Bainimarama viciously assaulted three women pro-democracy workers at the Suva barracks, on Christmas Eve in 2006, make him a target.

In an interview with Coupfourpointfive two days ago, Mara revealed he plans to travel the region to meet with leaders to discuss Fiji's current situation.

It's understood Mara intends to present a letter of what is being described as a referendum to the Melanesia Spearhead Group and ask Australia and New Zealand to intervene on the basis that human rights are at stake in Fiji.

Intelligence sources say the security risk to Mara, who would be moving through open spaces like airports and staying at hotels without professional protection, is above 70 percent.

Mara will be accompanied by his private protection officers (PPO's) but there are concerns that as he travels away from Tonga he is vulnerable to attacks, which could come from outside forces on behalf of the regime.

Trusted intelligent sources say the possibility of the military regime taking action to retaliate can't be ignored. And they say there could be any number of ways the regime could try to silence its former Number Four officer.

An intelligence source from within the regime told Coupfourpointfive people should not be naive about what's at stake and the lengths the illegal government might go to, to maintain its power and keep its secrets.

They say Frank Bainimarama, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum and their core supporters have a lot to lose and that we only have to look around the world to know that dirty governments will do what it needs to do to survive, and that Fiji is no exception.

The security risk to Roko Lui may be 99.99% if he leaves Tonga.
1.Regimes connection to China may kick in with Mafia like tactics
2.Fiji elites soldiers may try to capture him and brought back to Fiji.

Dear friends, lets just devise a plan here on which Ratu Mara is to act.

1. It is NOW VERY important that he stays in TONGA.

2. He now needs to release a video requesting all chiefs to act. If the chiefs act, and reconvene GCC, all of Fiji's problem will be solved.

Come on Ratu Tevita, you are the one who had removed gcc, do the honours and re-instate them. We do not need any authority in re-instating the GCC. It's just the will power which is needed. Show your will power now please, and I am sure the chiefs will shows theirs...

If the Chiefs had done their jobs properly, things would have been far better today. There is no role for them to play anymore. Frank is the only true Chief today.

YES RATU, IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE HEAR YOU ADDRESSING THE CHIEFS NOW.. GIVE THEM THE WILL POWER TO RECONVENE GCC...

Vinaka all those people in Fiji who supported this Regime and Frank Bainimarama from day one.

Any blood spilt on it's behalf, will be on your heads and the heads of your own children and family..

If nothing else, perhaps now, as the Regime begins to tighten its gip around the throat of Fiji and its Community and to expose its true nature and just exactly what it truly stands for, Fijians are finally beginning to comprehend the gravity of the Evil which they themselves have supported, helped create and nurture.

Perhaps now, Fijians understand the difference between Dictatorship and Democracy.

But uneducated, gullible and dishonest people will probably be happy to continue to support Frank's Demonic Regime, which we all know is run by Aiyaz and the Shameem sisters.

Sadly, Fijians will not wake up to the reality until Fiji is declared an Islamic State by Aiyaz.

Suggest Bainimarama concentrate on his own possible assasination rather than worry about somebody elses. Given his well documented track record within Kubuna - exiling the Roko Tui Bau - stitching up the Qaranivalu Ratu Inoke - he'd do well to remember an old adage.

"Who guards the guards while the guards guard me?".

Bai has easily forgotten the illegal acts he did and also authorized his men to do in the beginning of this Coup. This was done in the late 2006 and 2007, 2008.
So, by going out to the Fijian villages and donating money for their schools and reconstruction of hospitals, he thinks, he's wrong would be made right...That's not it!.
People @ the Finance and National Planning are fed up of his lack of strategic approach and knowledge to the system and are working overtime to try and balance the books. He goes out to the villages and whatever amount he fills like pledging to them, he states. He doesn't know first hand, the amount of money that the Govt can spend.
He goes to Kadavu and promises building schools from Class 1 to 4 in every village in the Ono district, he lacks the basic knowledge that class roll [amount of student] plays a vital role in having a school. What an idiot!..Even the villagers in Kadavu know that!.. Geez!.

It is vital that when Fiji is back to a democratic nation, the calibre of a PM should be a University graduate to the very least...and preferbly, someone with Masters, because they can comprehend with everyday situation and make good decisions for the Country instead of being a Puppet!..

Blood Defileth the Land

They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. Psalm 106:38

Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. Numbers 35:33

The blood of the murderer is required at his hands, and nothing short of it will satisfy law and justice, see Genesis 9:6.

There is no expiation to the land for the blood that was shed in it, except through the blood of the man who had shed it, i.e., through the execution of the murderer, by which justice will be satisfied.

Keep publishing you prayers, I am sure GOD is logged in the 24/7 and also to many other countries much worse then Fiji are logged in to GOD's prayer line. Since 1987 and before that...and 2000 when Speight took over, the people said this is what we have been praying for - a little bit later OH NO but not that...the constitution, the land issue et etc, lets pray again. Then LQ with his blueprint came, some circles said this is something we have been praying for only later NO NOT THAT, then in came the regime again many said this is what we've been praying for...and here some are now praying for the military to go back and reconcile with the Church and GCC and if it happends- what do we say- that's what we prayed for - or OH NO not that bit, we did not pray for that. Have we not overloaded the 'prayer line' with chats to GOD, that he has been speaking back saying ...'wait just stop - how will you be satisfied with so many things you keep praying for?. YOU SEEM TO WANT A LOT OF THINGS ......I'll just leave you to REALLY sort out WHAT you really need and come back to attend to your case....GOD left and has not returned since.

MINISTRY OF INFORMATION MEDIA RELEASE

(Tuesday May 31st 2011, No:1118/MOI) ‘Think Fiji First’

Statement by Sharon Smith-Johns - Permanent Secretary for Information, National Archives and Library Services of Fiji

First let me take this opportunity to thank you for your attendance (media Editors).

I wish to address the issue surrounding media coverage regarding the ex soldier Ratu Tevita who is in Tonga awaiting extradition.

The media in New Zealand and to some extent Australia have helped fuel rumors regarding this person and the false accusations targeted at the Fijian Government and its citizens.

I must stress to you all that reading these anti Fiji blog sites is not a source of credible information, these sites are run by politically motivated individuals who are mostly failed politicians and a smattering of disgruntled journalists. The majority of those commenting are from overseas and not from Fiji.

These blog sites have nothing positive to contribute to the growth of Fiji. They propagate rumors and stir up emotions to destabilize this country. Suffice to say the local media have unfortunately fallen for this trap and have used false information to lend false credibility to these stories.

The media has been misled by these baseless reports and have been used as a tool to further the interests of this select group of people who have proven to be anti Fiji.

Let me draw your attention to some examples of this false reporting.

Reports have suggested that Fiji is currently under 24 hour military roadblocks and people must be very cautious when traveling to Fiji. This is totally misleading and malicious.

I also bring to your attention the recent report by a New Zealand journalist that states that Fiji will not be having elections in 2014. No one from Government made that statement, its false reporting and deliberately used to question Fiji’s commitment to holding elections. Let me state one more time, Fiji will go to elections in 2014; we have clearly said this time and again.

A direct consequence of this incorrect and unfair reporting is the upgrading of the Australian Government’s travel advisory. We all know that there are no road blocks – there is no trouble. I am sure those Australians currently on holidays in Fiji, or doing business can confirm this. The unnecessary travel advisory will not only hurt the Tourism Industry but the people of Fiji.

Why can’t journalists in Fiji counter the overseas media and correct this misreporting, why are we not doing more to stop the spread of these intentionally damaging and spiteful rumors, you ladies and gentlemen know exactly what is going on in this country, you have the tools to inform the world of what is really happening on the ground in Fiji, please use your collective power to work together to build a better Fiji.

As the case of Ratu Tevita is before the courts there will be no further comment from the Government.

Let me urge the media to stop using any anti Fiji blog sites as a credible source of information.

Let me also urge you today to put Fiji first and report in a fair and balanced way.

Lastly let me urge you to be objective and ‘THINK FIJI FIRST’.

-Ends-

Sharon's real statement

Blogs Politically-Motivated: Fiji Journalists Should Counter Untruths
Tuesday May 31st 2011, No:1118/MOI. Think Frank First. Statement by Sharon Smut-Jobs, Permanent Secretary for MisInformation,

First let me take this opportunity to thank you for your attendance.
I wish to address the issue surrounding media coverage regarding Lieutenant Colonel Tevita Mara who is in Tonga. We have applied for extradition but know we are only going through the motions. As you know we have been suspended from both the Forum and the Commonwealth. Our extradition treaty with Tonga was only in place through membership of those organizations. It is so unfair that when you are an illegal government, legal options are not available any more.
The media in New Zealand and to some extent Australia have been very prominent in passing on his message of truth. I know all of you in this room don’t like to tell the truth and you are all very grateful to me and my censors for keeping you supplied with lies.
I must stress to you that all of us in Government read the blogs to find out the real situation. Even the Prime Minister would read the blogs but unfortunately he has never learnt to read. It is important for us with future political aspirations to read about our failings.
The Ministry of Information has nothing positive to contribute to the growth of Fiji. We propagate rumours and stir up emotions to bankrupt this country. Suffice to say local media have fallen into the trap of printing what I say and feeding the people of Fiji false information.
The media has been misled by these baseless reports and have been used as a tool to further the interests of the select Group of 2. Khaiyum and his hand puppet Bainimarama. These 2 are well known to be anti Fiji.
Let me draw your attention to some examples of this false reporting.
Reports have suggested that you have to be very cautious when travelling in Fiji because some of the potholes are as big as house. That is not true the biggest on record was only as big as a bus.
I also want to bring to your attention a report that Bainimarama has announced there will be elections in 2014. This is completely untrue and is as believable as when he said we would have elections in 2009 and 2010. As his permanent secretary I advise him against making false statements but he can’t help himself.
I want to thank the Australian Government for upgrading their travel advisory. There have been 132 reports of home invasion in the past 2 weeks. Crime is increasing and we do advise all tourists travelling in Fiji to be careful. You need to be like me and travel with a driver and a security guard. My security guard has a big gun and a massive ammunition pouch. He is perfect to take away for long weekends.

Why can’t journalists in Fiji counter these lies with the truth. Hold on aren’t we telling the journalists what to write. Message to self, double check what I sent to Peter Lomas of the Sun on Saturday. Did I send him the headline PM: Lies, Lies, Lies
As the case of Lieutenant Colonel Mara is before the courts there will be no further comment from government. Please put your hand up if you know the answer. How many times has the government said his departure is of no consequence and we will not mention him again because we are too busy running away with the country’s money. I can’t remember is that the fifth or the sixth time?
Let me urge the media to stop using the Ministry of Information as a credible source of information.
Let me also urge you today to put Fiji first and support the Pro Democracy movement.
Lastly let me urge you to be objective and ‘THINK FRANK FIRST’.

"We believe not SIMPLY in the rights of nations, but THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS." (Barack Obama's address at the Westminister Hall, Britain, May 2011.)[Emphasis mine.]

Thought provoking words for dictators and despots around the world - Mr Wannaby PM FB included.

Rights of nations are meaningless without corresponding citizens' rights. Of course, the enjoyment of citizen rights carries with it certain citizenry responsibilities too. But without the freedom to exercise ones rights or a sense of responsibility towards that right in the first instance, what worth (or purpose for that matter)is national sovereignty?

SO, pertinent questions to ask are: National Sovereignty for what and more importantly for WHO? For Robots? (people would not be lacking the ability to think). Automatons? Zombies? (Humans can tell right from wrong, do what is right and steer clear from what is wrong AND BEATING UP PEOPLE FOR DISSENTING VIEWS IS, WAS AND NEVER WILL BE RIGHT. BEATING UP WOMEN? BEATING UP WOMEN? Not only is the DESPICABLE ACT SO NOT 21st CENTURY, it goes against the very fibre of our moral being and society). INEXCUSABLE AND INTOLERABLE!

Therefore, RUM's flight to Tonga and the Tonga Navy's rescue (even if they picked him up at Narain Jetty or the Naval Base at Walu Bay) can never be taken as a breach of Fiji's national sovereignty. HOWEVER, the Tongan Navy's action would have been a breech IF our CONSTITUTION had not been abrogated, IF the JUDICIARY was independent, IF the FAKE emergency regulation was not in place, IF the fourth estate was not muted, IF the police force was free from interference, If the people were ALLOWED to express their thoughts and views freely and then have the freedom to act responsibly, IF...IF...IF... THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS IS PART AND PARCEL OF OUR DEFINITION OF THE RIGHTS OF NATION!

Once this fundamental truth is understood, everything will fall in place and Fiji will be free...

I am also a Fiji citizen, and so frustrated to see that all this blogs and reports on C4.5 but there has been no action eventuating to throw this government. Is it that Fijians are so scared and blind to see what the future holds for their children. Can someone out there confirm and organize to throw this government. I am so ashamed to say that our soldiers are not loyal to Fiji and just busy serving 2 mighty humans in particular. Please all soldiers, the true sons of Fiji, she is in great need of help. Wake up and do something.

@Inoke
The Regime has been very effective in keeping things under wrap by Suppressing the media ( because that is how the Villagers get their info) and also by suppressing any individual trying to spread information about them. eg Speight for making DVD's and now the 2 Lauan men.
But slowly the Coconut Wireless is working and it's only a matter of time before all the villagers see the truth that this arsehole has wasted their money and has sold them to the Chinese.
Be patient.
Keep doing what you can, however small it may be.
Talk to your relatives in the village about it. Write letters to them. Send them DVD from You Tube.
Write e-mails to UN etc etc.
Just keep doing whta you can and keep praying!
And one day Jericho will come down.

@JG 6:02pm and JC 3:58pm.

It is heartening to know that there are people out there who are genuine about taking our FIJI out of the quagmire it currently is in, even though you, JC, had missed the point completely of my earlier posting.

Perhaps JC, it is prudent that we should leave alone issues that neither you, JG or I have any influence over. It would be more sensible and pragmatic that we instead should focus on much more important issues closer to home that we should and can contribute constructively to.

Actively contributing to relevant and meaningful debate/discussion/dialogue as some of us are striving to do here can and will shine a light for us a way to reclaim (hopefully at the most minimal of cost) THE RIGHTS OF BOTH OUR CITIZENS AND OUR NATION.

That we are able to do this ONLY on sites like this makes our task even more pressing don't you agree?

As a regular contributor to this forum, I most indignantly must correct the myth you have been duped into believing.

I AM NOT A FORMER POLITICIAN (perhaps a future one - maybe, VOTE FOR ME?) and I am most definitely not a journalist (bless their brave souls!).

I am a simple FIJI CITIZEN, (one of an ever increasing number) forced underground to voice my views, my vision, my dreams...by YOUR pathetic, inward-looking, women and citizen bashing sorry excuse of a regime.

In any case, politicians or journalists, or common citizens, everyone has the right to a voice. Granted, rights comes with responsibilities. YOU AND YOUR Banana republic have denied me and my fellow citizens both for the last 4 long years!!! Why else did RUM seek safe haven in Tonga?

Its good to note some constructive comments. Let's not get emotive but tackle the heart of the problem.

The 87 and 2000 coup was ok becos of the taukei agenda but the 2006 was not because it was against the sdl govt.

Bottom line is no coup is good.

Secondly, for the taukei to be political dominant, we need a united front. Have our chiefs and people been united. NO.

Thirdly, we can't have leaders who have supported this coup one time or another. That includes RUM as it is evident that they only use the masses when they own lives are in danger.

We must choose our leaders who are intelligent and who can serve us at the sametime. Chiefs will have the GCC.

How about some names like Vitu (ftib) narube (rbf), as a start.

We need a grand coalition of all provinces. Not just one.

Last but not least we can have everyone fighting to be leader now.

Me too, friend, and I would love to know who is trying to sell the rest of the world on believing differently.

We cannot say WHO we are because we know we would be inviting a midnight raid at our front doors.

That being said, Fiji is a global mix of people who are using this blog site as our last means of refuge to share and communicate with, both one another, and the world, what we are living with here.

NOT journalists. NOT politicians or wannabes. Just people.

For some of us, our civil rights are like the air we breathe. We MUST have them. We WILL have them. Or we will take our last breath of air fighting for them. Freedom isn't free! John Galt

Food for thought to All:
What has happened? Aren't we supposed to love one another? What about our christian up bringing? Are we allowing the desires of this system of things to over rule our integrity in serving our God? Are we taking God's part to exercise vengeance or we patiently wait on his due time to act and act accordingly? Are we reading our bible everyday and really understand the teachings? If we do then nothing like this sort would have happened. Please my fellow Fijian friends, it's up to us as individuals to make up that peace and it is only through the love of Jesus Christ that can bring us toggether. We need to have real accurate knowledge of the bible so we can act upon its teachings and allow it to manifest in our daily dealings with others. No other way possible!

You should be talking to polynesian leaders like the PM's of Samoa & Tonga and USA, Australia & NZ on a military invasion to take Voreqe & the Mataivalu ni Solisona out.

These leaders should all support and request for just once US drone to be stationed in the Pacific to do this job.

Can everyone please stop calling for the reconvening of the GCC.

Chiefs have nothing more to offer this nation unless they are educated and have gone through the normal avenues like everyone else in this country, rather than automatically sitting in a position of authority because of the family they come from.

Look at the chief Roko Ului now, how he misuses the 'distant' reltaionship between his family ad the King of Tonga by putting the king and his government in a difficult position. He lies to the country trying to stir conflict.

Chiefs should not be allowed to exercise the power that they have thus far blatantly misused.

And I doubt the government actually cares if Roko Ului leaves Tonga or not, Roko Ului is just acting like a priveleged brat, who didnt get the promotion or the positions he wanted!

NO GCC, NO MORE CHIEFS unless they have proven themselves and struggled just like the everybody else.

Now, all we wanna know is why these lazy bones self proclaimed pro democracy gurus in Australia and overseas have been up to aaalllll this 5 long years??? Oh sure, a few marches here and there plus some very poor efforts to be visible at some regional meetings, letters to UN, which really end up in the bottom of the pile of International Crisis Groups and International Human Rights monitors.

Does it have to take someone to abscond from the clutches of Fiji’s Co-Prime Ministers, as Ratu Mara systematically achieved, to pivotally turbo charge to imminent conclusion the obvious objective of Pro Democracy Fiji groups?

Many would agree that Cyclone Mara had singled-handedly ruffled diplomatic feathers and of course attracted international attention entrancingly deeper into the secrete closets of the present Fiji regime in just 2 weeks.

Is it time for these pro-Democracy Guru’s to walk the talk with Ratu Mara to International and Regional avenues of redress that matters??..hoping that some where somehow the collective choruses of International and regional rebuke would weaken Fiji’s Co Prime Ministers hold of power in paradise?

..or do we have to wait for yet another failed fishing trip to start all over again?

No Going Back to Fiji - Ratu Tevita Mara

Radio Australia

A former chief of staff in Fiji's military regime who fled to Tonga says he's still considering options for his future.

Before he fled Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara was facing charges of plotting to overthrow Fiji's coup leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Ratu Tevita has ruled out returning to Fiji and says he'll decide whether he will seek refuge in Tonga or another country within days.

Presenter: Geraldine Coutts
Speaker: Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara, fugitive former Fiji military Chief of Staff

Listen:Windows Media: http://www.abc.net.au/ra/pacbeat/stories/m1994901.asx

I spoke to him earlier this morning, and began by asking him why he believed an Estonian man had been linked with his departure from Fiji...

MARA: It's a witch hunt, they're going after me as I said it was a normal fishing trip. Now Bainimarama he refused to accept that and he will try and find people to blame for what happened. The Estonian man is just a normal fisherman, he operates a normal fishing business out of a certain part of Fiji, and Pacific harbour. I hardly know him. So I really don't know what evidence they have to target him. But that's normal coming out of Fiji, they'll try and blame someone and they'll bring up charges that are false.

COUTTS: What is your status at the moment? We understand that you have or the authorities there have received the extradition papers. What's happening with that?

MARA: I haven't actually seen the extradition papers, they couriered from Fiji through the courier system, so perhaps it's somewhere within the system, I haven't actually seen them though.

COUTTS: So the Tongan authorities haven't approached you about extraditing you back to Fiji?

MARA: Well they'll only approach me if they have something. I mean talking about an extradition from Fiji, it's a long shot in the dark, you're talking about an illegal government that's abrogated its constitution, you're talking about an illegal government that currently all its standing treaties with Tonga are suspended. So what are you actually talking about?

COUTTS: What is your status at the moment? Are you seeking asylum?

MARA: It may get to that, it may get to that. I'm doing some work, working with the other democratic movements for Fiji across the world.

COUTTS: So when you have everything ready can you give us a clue as to what it is that you're seeking? Are you seeking political asylum or are you looking to go to a third country, perhaps New Zealand?

MARA: Those are options that are available, I'm not ready to disclose yet.

Tonga Chronicle: There have been calls for the activation of the Biketawa Declaration. Do you think Tonga and Fiji are potentially in conflict?

RUM: The real issue is the oppression in Fiji, by the military regime. And I think it’s an attempt to try to bring this issue up to cover that.

The real issue that regional countries should take into consideration more seriously is how can you have a military regime, military dictator, operating in the South Pacific.

This is the fifth year, how can they allow that? You see what’s happening in Libya, what’s happening in Syria. It’s a democratic revolution happening around the world.

But yet, in the South Pacific we are still dealing with a military dictator.

Tonga Chronicle: How do you feel, your family even friends, have been taken into custody in Fiji?

RUM: It’s a reincarnation of Muammar Gaddafi happening in Fiji. They have Gaddafi in Libya, we have another Gaddafi, Bainimarama, in Fiji.

Tonga Chronicle: There have been concerns that your stepping out is going to compromise Fijian security. Is that what’s happening?

RUM: The security issue in Fiji is not a problem for Tonga, especially the military.

The military issue is a problem for Bainimarama now. He does not have the support of the military and he knows that. The more I reveal what’s happened, the more the soldiers find out the truth, the more these guys coming under threat, and the more he finds himself loosing his grip on power. He’s showing all signs of a person who’s losing grip on power. It’s a sign of a dictatorship, he’s tightening up everywhere.

He was supposed to tour the Lau Group next month. On Monday, my island I come from, had written a letter to his office telling him that he’s not welcome. On Tuesday the police on the island did an investigation. Now the island people have reacted, and told the police to vacate the island. This is what’s been suppressed. Now the people are showing their emotions and feelings. My coming out of Fiji is an avenue for them, for me to show the oppression and also to express their feelings.

Since 2006, the people taken up to camp by the military, a hundred percent are Fijian people. That says the Fijian people do not agree with what happened in 2006.

When he took over power in 2006 the first things he took aside were the Great Council of Chiefs and the Methodist Church. These two are the highest establishment for Fijians and were the most vocal against him taking over. So who does he represent? It begins to question the cause, the motives behind his taking over government. He accuses the SDL government of corruption, but how many Ministers convicted so far? None.

There are a lot of questions about the real motives behind 2006.

Au kila ni sa na viavia maumau vinaka sara ga o Kaiviti Dina na ka o sa vakamacalataka mai qori. Ia me kena vakaloma vinaka ga qo...

Brig Thorpe was talking about a well-disciplined and professional force back then which is a far far FAR cry to the force we have today. To suggest that nothing has changed is delusional thinking.

Honestly speaking, much of the difference lies in the calibre of leadership then and now. The quality of any force depends to a very large extent on the ethos and ethics of its leaders. The philosophies which they subscribe to will be guided accordingly. When these are found wanting in our leaders in the force, we end up with troops that are either headless or heartless or both.

This does not mean that the rank and file are totally absolved from blame however. Unless they have been totally brained-washed and turned into little less than robots, they should still have the capacity to distinguish right from wrong. If they KNOW and UNDERSTAND their OATH, I am sure that they will find the strength and conviction to act accordingly. With a strict hierarchical chain of command as they have in the disciplined forces, following orders (from your superior) is the norm. It is expected and unquestioned TO A CERTAIN DEGREE. When orders are UNLAWFUL/ILLEGAL/UNETHICAL/INHUMAN,the rank and file have their OATH first of all to resort to. Failing to find comfort there (a troubled conscience is debilitating!), they have their upbringing and personal experiences to call upon. The point is, the excuse "WE ARE JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS" does not cut it, never was, never will. Any soldier who lives and stands by his/her OATH will never think about let alone utter those words!

This brings me back to my original point about the quality of leadership. Considering the experiences and debacle the force has been put under since 1987, can it be honestly said that we had/have quality leadership, the best there was, the best we could have? Kaiviti Dina? Do you know/understand your OATH OF ALLEGIANCE?

RE: Anon @ 3:13 PM

I concur with Happy Feet. Very well written and astute.

We must have the right kind of leadership. Fiji has had a tough go of it because the governmental coffers have been spent on bribes, repulsive pay for head governmental officials (yeah, YOU AG and PM) and little to none on education. Civil servants were left with rules on the books but cannot make head or tails out of them. For THAT, I blame the U.K. for not overseeing the transition in a balanced and responsible way.

Fijian people are just as bright as anyone else on the planet. Their shortcoming? - they have been deprived of the basic education that everyone else in the free world has.

This MUST be changed and, obviously, corrupt and self enriching leaders who do NOT believe they have a public to answer to - will not, willingly, give up the treasury. John Galt
