Suva and Bainimarama remain quiet about assault allegation

No word yet from Fiji's illegal leader about the revelations he led the assault on three women pro-democracy advocates at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks, just after he seized control of the country by coup in 2006.

Fiji media have today all avoided the subject, continuing to operate under the strict censorship regulations, with no sign of a response yet from Frank Bainimarama.

In the past fortnight, Bainimarama has responded to coverage of wide belief that he won't be holding democractic elections even in 2014, denying he intends to keep ruling indefinitely.

He has also responded to confirmation that he's receiving more than $700,000 for overseeing six Cabinet portffolios, as well as the Commanders pay and a salary for being prime minister. He's also tried to dismiss persistent talk he intends to sack the illegal president.

But he has today, so far, stayed silent (apart from his henchmen trying to manipulate comments on Coupfourpointfive) about the serious allegations by his former number four, Roko Ului Mara, that dressed in a bush hat and overalls he was the first to strike three women on Christmas Eve in 2006, and that the crude assault included him jumping on their backs.

In today's Fiji Sun the headline, as bloggers have been quick to note screamed "LIES, LIES, LIES", but there has been no such wit or enthusiasm about the assault allegations.

The junta dictator silence is guilty verdict for him, he was responsible for all the beating and arson in fiji and was at QEB dressed up for the buturaki of civilans and led these tortutre and abuse and assult.
The dictator must be taken to task and face fiji court and gailed for these crimes- is this thug prime minister of FIJI?

The beating of women at the QEB when the thug dictator took over the fiji government in 2006, has been revealed and sent to lot of fiji people who are spreading this crime and human rights abuse of the dictator like fire- that the junta dictator is not who he says he is- that he is prime minister material but a thug who assualted/puched/kicked/jumped on backs of woemn/poked gun barrel in women rear/swore at them/terrosied the wome/human right abuse and crime in fiji law. this the man who is beating women at night at QEB and claiming to be prime minister of fiji. Ratu MAra, bavadra, garase and even rabuka had respect of the people but this man is a big thug/crook/woman basher/tryant/lier/conman and must be arrested and face court for crimes commited for justice to people of fiji.

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD NEWS-BELOW
Bainimarama beat women: fugitive colonel
Bonny Symons-Brown
May 28, 2011 - 12:54PM

AAP

One of Commodore Frank Bainimarama's former colleagues has alleged the self-appointed Fijian prime minister badly beat a group of female pro-democracy advocates during his 2006 coup.

Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara, once a high-ranking army man in Fiji, fled his homeland earlier this month after being charged with trying to overthrow the government.

While hiding out in Tonga, he has hurled a barrage of controversial claims at the regime, which he played a senior role in after it seized power at the end of 2006.
Advertisement: Story continues below

In a statement released on Saturday, Lt Col Mara alleged that during the coup almost five years ago Cdre Bainimarama would take protesters to an army barracks and assault them.

"If he was not attacking their bodies, he was attacking their property," he said.

Lt Col Mara said one night three women who were part of the Fijian pro-democracy movement were brought to the barracks where Cdre Bainimarama, dressed in civilian clothes, and a number of other soldiers were waiting.

"The men were hanging back unsure what to do," he said.

"This was the first time there were women in the camp needing to be silenced.

"Bainimarama landed the first blow. He then continued to punch and kick them.

"When they had fallen to the ground he jumped on their backs and continued with the beating."

Lt Col Mara said the women couldn't see who was attacking them and it had long been blamed on another former senior military man, Brigadier General Pita Driti.

He said while he was there for the beatings, he did not participate in them.

Lt Col Mara claimed he didn't try to stop Cdre Bainimarama because he was a lower rank than him.

"But that is not really a good reason and I regret I did not do more," he said, apologising to the women and promising to answer to them in person when he returned to Suva.

Lt Col Mara added that he had only ever seen Cdre Bainimarama hit women and never men.

NZ considers sheltering Fiji fugitive
Tamara McLean, AAP South Pacific Correspondent
May 24, 2011

AAP

The New Zealand government is considering offering political asylum to a fugitive Fijian military man at the centre of a diplomatic row.

Fiji's military regime is believed to have filed an extradition order with Tonga calling on the immediate return of its former military chief Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara.

Lt Col Mara, a former ally-turned-foe of Fiji's controversial regime, escaped Fiji after being charged with plotting to overthrow the government and has been holed up in the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa ever since.
Advertisement: Story continues below

He has used YouTube and blog websites to issue a string of stinging claims that the government is rife with corruption, violence and huge salaries for its most senior men.

New Zealand media has reported that Fiji has filed an order with Tonga ordering it to return Lt Col Mara to Suva immediately to face sedition charges.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key told TV3 on Tuesday that there were a number of factors involved, but it was "a possibility" Lt Col Mara could come to New Zealand.

In an interview with Radio New Zealand earlier, Key said his government was looking at removing his name from the list of Fijian government officials banned from travelling to New Zealand.

"The ban that we have is a travel ban on those that are members of the regime or are related to members of the regime. In the case of Mr Mara that is no longer the case."

The New Zealand government has been working with Canberra to push the Fijian regime, which seized power in a 2006 coup, towards holding democratic elections in 2014.

In his latest YouTube release and statement published on blog site Coup Four And A Half, Lt Col Mara said self-appointed prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama had privately "joked" about his earlier promise to hold elections in 2009.

"The dictator often laughed about this in private and he made that promise with no actual intention of honouring it," the fugitivesaid in the statement.

"Just like his first promise, the 2014 elections will never be staged in Fiji.

"It is only a ploy to soften the international community from the smart sanctions and extract as much loans from donor agencies to sustain the cruel dictatorship until they could for self-interested ambitions."

He also claimed Bainimarama and his attorney-general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, paid themselves salaries of F$700,000 (NZ$500,000) a year, which he termed "daylight robbery".

"People of Fiji, let me say that the 2006 coup objectives are no longer any part of the regime plan."

"They are now indulging in unprecedented level of self-enrichment never seen under any previous government," Lt Col Mara said.

"I am calling on the people of Fiji to unite first, and then we shall overcome the dictator soon before our nation is completely destroyed by Khaiyum and Bainimarama."

He claimed Bainimarama was a "puppet" to Khaiyum, but the attorney-general hit back, telling the Fiji Sun "all decisions are made by cabinet and it's a collective decision".

Khaiyum criticised the New Zealand media's "abhorrent and unprofessional" coverage of the issue. Fiji's government has refused to offer any official comment.

Thank-you for taking an interest in Fiji even after your vacation has ended. It's good to know we touched your hearts that much.

But now, despite the idlyic picture Fiji presented for a tourist - you know that things are NOT GOOD for us on the ground floor. Such a pretty picture that hides a world of monsters. Tourists are are carefully steered around it. Not good for business ya know. Problem is, too much of that tourism money stays overseas and doesn't hit our shores (by design). Note who has lots of mula and who has none. Corruption to the top.

Go to the militarized government you say to address our grievances? Why - they are the ones who are doing it. John Galt
