Ului gives the slip while Fiji police overplay roadblocks

If the illegal leader, Frank Bainimarama, is looking worried, there's a reason. His military government is collapsing around him and worst of all, the man who has promised to reveal all of the regime's dirty little secrets hightailed it out of Suva, despite being under the eye of the police and military.

Fear of reprisal had led to the regime activating its ready action unit and erecting roadblocks but informers say Roko Ului Mara last Thursday managed to give the regime the royal slip to make his way to Nukualofa and the safe haven of King George's Palace.

They say Roko Ului was in west the whole of last week from Monday and met with Tongan operatives who facilitated the secret operation with the Tongan Navy.

The  plan was kept under wraps from even the closest to the Mara Family.
Neither the police commissioner nor the so-called task force even knew until Mara was in Tonga, until the news started to circulate.

According to our sources, Ioane Naivalurua's lot only got suspicious when Mara failed to report in on Friday at CPS as per his bail condition.

A few royalist boys from 3FIR apparently became aware of the secret operation but by then the former commander of the 3FIR who had been ignominously charged with sedition just the week before, was well on his way to Tonga. Sources say the Fiji intel was compromised, but their silence proves many in Bainikhaiyum's Army support Mara and Driti.

Sources also say Bainimarama is lying about Roko Ului not surrendering his passport. They say Mara had given authorities his passport and was reporting to Central Police Station on a Friday as required.

They also say there is no money missing from Fiji Pine Trust as claimed by Bainimarama. The dictator said at yesterday's press conference Mara was being investigated for an unaccounted $3 million as well as for breach of bail, which made him a fugitive.

Bainimarama also said the Fiji courts would get busy this morning  trying to get Mara extradited.

  1. Baini stole the money and is trying to pin it on Mara... Open your eyes - this is oldest trick in the book.
This is his way of shifting blame on Mara...
    Baini is scared!
TIME IS NOW TO RISE UP AND TAKE FIJI BACK!!! THE MILITARY WILL NOT STRIKE AGAINST ITS PEOPLE!! MILITARY ON SIDE OF MARA AND DRITI.

  3. Fiji People need to unite and have faith that they can overthrow and take down the illegal regime which has wreaked havoc since 2006.
Good on you, Mara! You have the support of the people of Fiji and it is evident through your actions that you are a true Mara Blood.
People of Fiji, you also need to stand up and fight as there is strength in numbers and unity.
    UNITED WE STAND....DIVIDED WE FALL!!
This is it!! The final straw. Something must happen right now as this is an opportunity in disguise.

  4. The origimal charge for Mara and Driti was Sedition and Mutiny-now that Mara has run away to another country-Bai and Khaiyum, is coming up with some more charges=false I presume to keep their dignity. These days, hard to believe what comes out of Bai's mouth because its not true-always mixed with lies. Lier from start and willbe a lier till the end. The actions and the words of a dishonest man will always follow him around-his family follows in his footsteps-SO SAD! Guess where they all end up-HELL! GOD BLESS FIJI AND BRING OUT THE SCUMBAGS OF THIS COUNRT TO THE OPEN.

  8. In a business environment, when a manager fails to hire the right people, he is usually sacked.

Bainimarama hired Qarase, Mara and many others...

Some might say that Fijians (and Pacific Islanders) are generally unreliable in the long run and that is a cultural feature here to switch from one camp to another, so we can't blame Frank. Well...maybe.

  10. OK reality check no 1. The Tongan Royal family does not have a very good record in the Tongan Judiciary against the Tongan Government. Extradition papers will be filed to in the Tonga Magistrate Court, not to the ceremonial King.

Reality checks no 2. How could Fiji move ahead with nameless and faceless cowards and so called “under cover” Christians hiding under the guise of “wisdom” to justify remain anonymity?
Problem the calls is herald for action, all nameless, faceless and clueless thugs are caught with their pant down..not knowing who their comrades are..

Question again??..where to now Ratu Mara??

In the end, hitler was happy for Berlin's Citizens to die, rather than surrender.

It's all been done before, don't allow it to happen the same way again.

  31. And so the curtains open and the show begins....

Roko Ului is correct in saying he will need to come back to Fiji and answer to any inquiry about the 2006 coup. All involved will need to answer one day.

In the meantime, Mara can begin redeeming himself by revealing as much as he can from his safe haven about the various offshore bank accounts to which Bainimarama and Khaiyum have channeled their wealth. C4.5, is the conduit through which to channel that information. Post the info on C4.5 and we'll begin disseminating it from there to everyone else with email accounts in Fiji - and let the Coconut Wireless do the rest.

Mara needs to reveal all to enable the President to move against Frank and assume Executive Control of the country. Now is the time .... a week from now, the momentum will be lost.

Eventually, Tonga will hand Roko Ului to either Australia or NZ for further safekeeping and of course either country will accept him for the information he can provide them.

The Police can investigate as much as they want but will stop short of arresting the real power players behind Mara's escape to Tonga. And those power players go all the way to the top!!! So, yes. Frank is afraid - very very afraid because once the story unfolds he and his side-kick Khaiyum will be on the outside looking in. And the only way out for them would of course be through his brother-in-law and the Navy - a similar getaway like Mara but this time to a Muslim country. The problem there of course is that Kean's tinboats will need refuelling on the way - and should the President call for their arrest, Australia and New Zealand would not hesitate to intercept a rogue Fiji Naval vessel in international waters.
If there was ever an opportunity to topple Frank .. it's NOW.

  34. @ Anon 1033 a.m.
Nailatikau is not a legal appointment because only the GCC can appoint a President and Vice President !

The only legal entities in Fiji are the GCC, the original appointees, not Frank's stooges, and Mr. Qarase, but because of the advise of the court of Appeal on the 9th. of april 2009, the GCC must appoint a neutral caretaker Prime Minister and take Fiji to elections, preferably sooner rather than later.
At this point, the Cabinet can suggest a new Commander of the military and have the GCC approve or otherwise, that appointment.
Either way, the appointment of the Caretaker prime minister and his Cabinet Ministers and the new Commander of the Military, must be given a sunset clause and a clause which allows for their arrest if they step outside the guidelines to elections and the timeframe as set by the GCC.

Of course all illegal appointees of the Regime will need to be arrested for High Treason and Sedition and other charges appropriate to their crimes and a replacement found for the Police Commissioner's position among others.

So let's get cracking fellas, there is a lot of work to do behind the scenes and Frank and Co. won't be able to stop you now, not with the groundswell of support from the people.

Time to show who has the biggest balls in Fiji, will it be Ro Kepa ?

  38. And Lot pleaded with God to spare the city. God said, "even one. Find Me one good soul and I shall spare the city from destruction." Must have been a bad day for Lot. We all know how that story ended.

Another apt tale. And the man promised the boys cotton candy and treats if they followed him to the carnival where all of the bright lights and attractions were. They happily followed him and were instantly turned into asses, harnessed in a working circle to do the man's bidding and work as slaves. Too bad no-one had warned the boys that there is no free lunch in life.

    You reap what you sow.

And my personal favorite - And there was a proud and pompous King who strode down the main street in town one fine day, followed by all of his regalia. The huge crowds watched in shocked silence. A lad, sitting on his father's shoulder, pointed at the King and said (what everyone else was too afraid to say), "Papa, look! The King has no clothes on!"

What kind of a police force and military do we have that they cannot effectively control the movements of just a few people? Perhaps it was deliberate?

Lastly, you can shut the mouth of some people all of the time, and all - some of the time. But you cannot shut the mouth of the people ALL OF THE TIME! John Galt

  42. People, your small minds and emotions are driving you guys nuts. Mark my word, Frank will come out on top after all this is done.

The Kingdom of Tonga and government will handover Roko Ului. This is clear under extradition treaty between the two countries. If they don't, there are embarrassing repercussions for the Tongan government both diplomatically and to its traditional relationship to Fiji.

Roko Ului has been a well-known abuser of military powers up at the camp after Dec 2006. Even the soldiers up there in Nabua do not like him. His rise to the 4th highest position in RFMF was mostly in deference to his father, the late Tui Nayau, who was a great leader and well respected statesman by Bainimarama himself. It was not so much through merit.

What is currently happening at the camp with the removal of some of these officers is just a purge of the last vestiges of bad apples whose seed was sown in the coup of 1987 by Rabuka. That coup bred a corrupt mindset that really will take years to eradicate from our midst. But the wheel of change for the better for this country is clearly on the roll. We will get there eventually and recover both economically and politically.

Have no doubt the current military leadership will become stronger and united as the really bad apples are all removed from its rank. Those who are leading the military now are much more wiser and stronger in their resolve to rid this country of corruption and extremism.

Quite a lot of anti-Bainimarama/RFMF/Fiji commenting have so much to learn rather than just throw stupid comments around. If you think the current leadership will crumble, please don't get your small minds delude you.

  44. Rt Epeli Nailatikau might appear to be a fool. He's NOT. How do you think Mara got to Tonga? The real blood ties are between the Tongan King and Ratu Edward Cakobau's children.

In the end, the inquiry into the 2006 coup will have Nailatikau, Mara, Driti and everyone else saying they believed in Frank's cause because Qarase and the SDL HAD TO GO. And that Frank changed course mid-way and became a dictator (taking all of the kick-backs without giving them their share).

Excuses - all were complicit in the events of 2006 - what they do NOW for the betterment of Fiji however will help mitigate in their favour. But they need to face the music and start confessing/revealing all NOW so that there is a public record for history's sake. A record which will show how military men with a common cause fell out of favour with each other when they allowed an untested, wet-behind-the-years, second-rate, pen-pushing lawyer into their inner circle.

Nailatikau needs to act NOW and do the honourable thing - assume Executive Authority and then hand over to an interim civillian government and submit himself, like Mara, to an inquiry.

Shakespeare must yelling from his grave - Brutus, Brutus - wherefore art thou - your company is sorely missed by the current bunch of back-stabbers in Fiji today.

Good luck with that. All Ului has to do is point out the compromised judiciary.

No sensible judge in Tonga would hand him over for a show trial in our kangaroo courts.

The time is coming - I wonder if you and the other apologists will be left talking about how great Frank & Co were?

In another 5 years time Fiji will have recovered and have a new age of prosperity - we will look back on Frank and Aiyaz as examples of hubris and greed - and the army will spend much of their training learning how and why they let themselves be used against their own people.

  48. I am Fiji born of Indian heritage and follow the Muslim faith. I will say this categorically. When the coup happened in 2006 i, like most of the citizens of this beloved country was happy to see Qarase go. My brief optimism died very quickly when i saw A.S.K appointed as the AG and CHODO as the minister for Finance. I knew immediatly that this was going to be the biggest disaster that Fiji would face and true enough things have gone from bad to worse. I know of the AG and his sordid history very well and the assessment given by Mara is accurate. A.S.K is driven by his ego and nothing else. My fellow Fiji Islanders i love this country just as most of us do. This is no longer an issue about which god you pray to and where ones ancestors originated from. It is time for all of us to find what makes us similar and forget about our differences and join hands and say enough is enough. We will no longer be made fools off, you will no longer take from us what belongs to us, you will no longer suppress us, you will no longer tell us what to do and how to do it. You will give us the freedom that we deserve and is our god given right.

We will say no to tyranny and dictatorship. When we finally get rid of this monster’s we must be wise in choosing out leaders and not let the smooth talkers con us. Lets not vote with our hands and heart but with our head.

God bless Fiji and all its people.

  49. @ The Max......contrary to your statement, its the corrupt, un educated and thugs that are remaining. The real RFMF officers, who swear loyalty to the institution and not the commander have gone. If you're saying that the cream is what remains, then God help us all if we have Kean -murderer/Leweni from WO -Lt Colonel, Arse prodders like Naliva and Rabuka, Sex predators like Qilio. The Tongan Navy picked RU from Kadavu. Even if they picked him up from the Kings wharf, You bunch of blockheads at QEB wouldn't even have known. So much for best are staying, more like scrapping the bottom of the barrell, in the RFMF's case, scrapping the bottom of the sceptic tank.....

  52. Thank you Anon muslim @2:40pm. I'm sure your sentiments are shared by many and its good that people are beginning to speak up and speak out on the fate that has befallen our country. Its unfortunate that so many were so blinded by their dislike of Qarase that they did not see the snakes that they were putting in charge. I would include Ratu Ului as well who should have known better being from the same province as Qarase and having first hand knowledge of what a blockhead Vore is. Hopefully we can get past his period of turmoil and come out of it with a better understanding and clearer vision of what a multicultrual Fiji should look like and what kind of leadership we want.

  53. Roadblocks? Activate Ready Action Unit? Isn't this a bit like closing the barn doors after the horse has bolted? A few things were thrown into clear light by Ului's departure. 1) The Ready Action Unit wasn't really ready
    2) And people in the National Intelligence Bureau are not so well...intelligent.

  54. Thank you ANON 3.04. I never disliked Qarase. In fact due to the limited choices we had in the last election of good leaders i actually voted for SDL. I never voted for Chuadhary and never will even if he was the only candidate. Sadly a lot of Indian people particularly Muslims voted for SDL and it saddens me when ANTI Muslim comments are made on this website because of the actions of a few. I have met Qarase and i actually found him to be a very decent person. His biggest weakness was that he could not find the back bone to deal with the nationalist elements in his party and get rid of the many free riders that he had around him. He played the divide and rule politics perhaps reluctantly because he needed the support of a few of the fundamentalists in his party. As a human being i think he was not what most made him out to be. This unfortunately is the Fijian way which entwines cultural values and traditional ties to hold back leaders from doing the right thing. Aside from packing all other races into a boat and sending them to seek asylum in Australia the only choice we have as people of this country is to accept one another as fellow country men. We need to define a set of guidelines which ensures that the basics of the Fijian heritage and Indigenous rights be always protected and from this we must move on into the next millennia with tolerance, goodwill and a sense of nationhood which will ensure we build a great country to live in. There is no other way.

I think there is enough “love” in this country for us to do this.

  55. RE: Oracle, 12:43 pm. Agreed. There are no innocent lambs being led to the slaughter here. They CHOSE to be a part of things that have backfired. Don't expect logic from scorpions. They are always looking for free rides and comps - even when it can eventually lead to their demise.

RE: Anon, 2:40 pm. Wow. I think I am in love. You sound smart, caring, educated and with your heart in the right place - here in our beloved Fiji. We are a multi-ethnic nation and Fiji belongs to ALL of us. (Remember it IS an island and EVERYONE rowed here at one time or another!) Keep the faith in the real things that unite us. We all have Fiji's best interests in mind.

RE: Tui Viti, 2:52 pm. Yeah, you ARE right. If not, then will someone explain how these high profile "seditious" and/or corrupt men could just disappear off the radar? By the way, where ARE Driti, H. Brown, Luigi (sp?), Leweni, Aziz et al? Well, we ALL know where the AG was. Partying it up at the Jazz festival. Doesn't appear to think the country's current crisis merits his full, undivided attention, does he? John Galt

  57. The Max, how dare you say RU's rise through the ranks to No 4 was not through merit but by deference of his father Ratu Mara. How about Baini, does he have the credentials to rise to the top. He only went to Form 4. RU is better educated than Bai. If his ascension was by merit, we wouldn't be having so much instability in the army, The top guys like Tuatoko, Raduva, Rt Kadavulevu, Koroi, Baledrokadroka. Saubulinayau, Seruvakula and now Driti and RU have left because their intelligence have been extensively insulted by this half-schooled idiot.

  58. @anon 3.54 YOU ARE RIGHT. Absolutely correct and I am sure you have an insight about Qarase and him being controlled by the extremists. And therefore not a strong enough leader because he was weighing which side his bread was buttered. Chaudhry or extremists?

This weak position and leadership of Qarase has led to the end result which is the 2006 and beyond....

Yes otherwise Qarase is indeed a GOOD MAN as you just said as it appears he never supported the Goligoli Bill but was made to support and some extremist elements in GCC were behind it that saw an end to Qarase at the hands of Frank/military.

NO INDIAN IN PICTURE. SO STOP BLAMING INDIANS...

  59. Mara is running away as he knows he is at fault and he wants to escape like other criminals who run out of prisons. If he is innocent than he should fight for it and not run away. Go Baini Go. Fiji is on its way to democracy and this leader ship shows it as regardless of who you are, you have to face the law and respect the law. Time has gone for corrupted governments where prisoners walked out of jail even George speight was enjoying on the island in previous government but this leader has showed prisoners of their right place which is the prison. Tonga please have some decency and do what is right and stay out of Fiji's internal affairs.
    God Bless Fiji.
