Bainimarama being urged to be more assertive over Minerva

The heat is apparently being put on the illegal leader of Fiji to take strong action against Tonga over Minerva Reef. Information sighted suggests political advisors want Frank Bainimarama to be more assertive and act to protect Fiji's interest. It appears the current feeling in Suva is that if Bainimarama can't protect Fiji's EEZ, how can he protect Fiji and her people?

The regime has been exploring its options under the Marine Space Act, which allows it to flex its navy muscle but the general opinion is that national interest and security is at risk and Bainimarama needs to step up. Sources say no one wants Fiji to go to war but Bainimarama needs to make it clear to Tonga that Fiji will not hesitate to use force if its EEZ is breached.

They say Tonga needs to be told not to erect the second beacon but wait for dialogue to settle the issue. Sources also say it's believed Tonga is taking advantage of the recent situation with Roko Ului Mara where it got away with whisking him off to Nukualofa, where he also escaped extradition orders. They say there was no reaction from Tonga when Fiji destroyed the beacon last year but it now seems to be going to particular lengths to prove its claim over Minerva.

Fiji has no right to Minerva and should butt out trying to claim the reef as her own. I bet Tonga will win hands down with the UN's backing and will have support of all international bodies. The illegal govt of BainiMARAMA (what a name) and Aiyaz ( or is that AiYES) has put Fiji in this position and Australians and NZ will alway support Tonga in any dispute. This is all Baini's fault and has removeal will satisfy the international community.

@12:13pm abd @ 12.03pm Fiji has done more for the UN than Tonga. The military remains patient with out Tongan brothers. Because they are following the orders of a corrupt King who will try and restore any member of the Mara family in a leadership role in Fijiby using Minerva Reef as a battle front.
So much complaints coming from the Lau people about the dirty deeds of Roko Ului Mara. The diverting of anhorage fees, and claiming of fishing grounds in Oneata. The amount of debts he has and dubious business deals. Rings a bell doesn't it. Lies and corruption.

What utter bullshit.

Frank and his advisors are trying to stir up stories to distract everyone from the real fight: the fight against him.

Is Pacific in Media trying to incite FB to act and take Fiji to war...fat chance of that happening. This article sounds so stupid and self serving.

You think that FB is so dopey that he will risk war and have the Bikatewa Declaration invoked against him??? Im sure he sees through that.

Can we please have constructive articles on this forum rather than articles that "shoot in the dark'!!

Have the guts to publish my comments?

A scorpion always stings! So, the PM feels that, at this moment in time, all his energies need to be directed at fighting over a da*m reef out in the middle of the ocean? Like there aren't more important issues right here on our own soil?

I would say Mara has driven him so bezerk that nothing else matters to him. Go ahead Frank. Show the world just how demented you have become. We, in Fiji, have known it for some time now.

Let the rest of the world watch, from a front row seat, how you feel you are ENTITLED to take, by force, ANYTHING you want.

And if you take the reef by force, how no-one will ever have safe navigation again. Hey, you can't even keep safe water flowing or roads in good repair in Fiji. John Galt

This debate over the ownership of Minerva Reef is the silliest yet. Fiji should be gratefull for the Tongan money spent on warning beacons to prevent shipwreck . . no one can live there, there is no land, JUST A REEF, covered by the water at high tide, get it? This nonsense reflects the mind of a mad man ruling a beautiful people with the most abhorent oppressive lies and corruption, murder, rape, arson, grand larceny, etc. .. why waste good wood on a coffin . . just feed the Banana & Taliban to the sharks at the reef and let the Fiji people celebrate with a nation-wide party.

May yaso!

Go Tongans and shut Fiji's ILLEGAL regime out. The people of Fiji are behind you all the way for they understand only too well what it's like to have their government, their rights and their freedoms STOLEN from them.

Nice try people .... the reef belongs to Fiji and Frank or anyone need not do anything until provoked into action by Tonga.
Your story seems to imply that Fiji should be the aggressor here ... quite simply not ... you cant put a thief in jail before he breaks into your house ... similarly Fiji cant pursue Tonga until they try anything funny

Just do not forget one of our very high chiefs nearly lost his life years ago en route to lay claim for those very same few mount of coral.

These rouge advisors to the Co PMs wish to deflect our attention away from the real issues of life in Fiji.

Aren’t the 300 plus islands enough for us? We cannot even govern and protect our borders.

While we’re busy arguing about the barren reef, up North Rotuma may be now in the process of declaring Independence from Fiji…well, the document that once glued Rotuma to Fiji is no more!

Float away Rotuma…so long!! ….

Then we may then focus of Vanuatu grabbing the blooming reef south of Tana??...

The international community already know who's EEZ the reef falls under.Lets focus on whats really happening on Frank's watch.Judging by reports, all those involved in night time roundups are a disgrace to their country, people and uniform. What in hell are they thinking, persecuting the very people they swore to protect, because they couldn't handle the truth or simply put freedom of speech.I know,it's hard to think straight when you're getting a regular paycheck for the time being, the real back-pay is coming up

Will respect these "advisors & Vore" if and when they (he)personally ship aboard these warships they propose sending to Minerva?

Conclude 2 things from all this. Firstly its nothing more than a distraction from the real issues facing Viti. Secondly - right now Minerva displays all the classic signs of a well laid naval trap.

The Fiji-Tonga War (usually referred to in Fiji as the Liberation War) was fought between Fiji and Tonga in 2011, and led to the overthrow of Idi-ot BainiAmin's regime. Idi-ot BainiAmin's forces included troops sent by Talibanistani A.G. al-Khaiyum, as well as some Palestinian support.

Relations between Tonga and Fiji had been strained for several months before the war started.

The Tongan Government offered sanctuary to Ratu Ului Mara after BainiAmin and A.G. Aiyarse TRUMPED UP charges against him which would have landed him in jail for years.

Result: Tongan victory; overthrow of Idi-ot in Fiji

@Semi and the rest of you War mongerers cheering and commentating on the sideline!! You bunch of empty drums you are. The Minerva Reef is insignificant. The issue is the Tongan Navy entering our EEZ at will, and with total disregard for the sovereignty of this land. First with the illegal extraction of fugitive and now business conman Roko. They are asking for trouble. They do this because they can run under the skirts of the Australian and New Zealand forces. They are but pawns in these political games. But we will chase them to the shores of Sydney & Auckland harbour and swimming back to Tonga and their King. You risk open warfare for the sake of your cause and casualties Fiji and Tonga.

Apology to PM
Samantha Rina
Wednesday, June 15, 2011
A TRADITIONAL apology was yesterday presented to the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama for the destabilising events caused in the wake of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara's escape.

The apology by the chiefly Vuanirewa clan from which Ratu Tevita hails and a traditional welcome ceremony was presented as Commodore Bainimarama arrived at Lakeba, Lau, yesterday morning, a statement from the Ministry of Information stated.

The men sat in a solemn group towards the end of the wharf where the PM disembarked.

"The gathering symbolised a humble apologetic peace offering from the vanua of Lau to the Government. Reverend Uraia Logavatu from the tokatoka Nayavutoka of the chiefly clan said they were saddened his vanua was linked to recent destablising events of national implications," the statement said.

Reverend Logavatu sought forgiveness and acceptance, saying they were ashamed of recent events because they knew the Government had been good to them. He said any Government in place was there on divine calling and annointing so going against the Government was like going against God.

Commodore Bainimarama accepted the apology and said it was time to move ahead as a nation.

"I want you to leave this behind and let's move forward. Do not be heavy hearted about the events of the past few weeks. This Government will not be easily moved because we have to develop this nation. Government will continue on its development drive no matter what challenges crop up," he told them.

Later, the PM thanked the clan and Tubou Village elders for the warm reception.

The PM visited and inspected Ratu Mara College and emphasised the importance of education. Parents were urged to show greater commitment in the education of their children.

At Tubou Village, he engaged in a talanoa session with villagers and inspected housing rehabilitation projects at Vakano,

Couple query Aust, NZ media

An elderly Australian couple has questioned the motive behind media reports in New Zealand and Australia claiming political instability in Fiji.
The couple, Bruce and Jypsy Eastes, both 84, of Queensland, Australia, raised their concern while touring in Vanua Levu last week on holiday.

“Back home in Queensland our friends always say the real Fiji experience is to travel to Fiji, experience the real Fiji, its lifestyle, the people, the culture and white sandy beaches. That is why we are here,” Mr Eastes said.

“People back home suggested to us to try travelling to the northern island, Vanua Levu. They call it at home as the hidden paradise.”

“Fiji is a great holiday destination and we do not regret spending huge amount of money to travel here,” pitched in his wife.

They were among passengers onboard the Reef Endeavour, a vessel belonging to Captain Cook Cruises which sailed around Vanua Levu last week.

They made the comment when SunNorth met them at Labasa Town.

“I fell in love with the scenery, the service delivered to us since arriving in Fiji and the friendliness of the people here.

Mrs Eastes said: “The friendly smiles and welcome and the humbleness and respect shown by the p

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic Suva port
Aboard this tiny ship.

Baini was a mighty sailing man,
aiyaz was brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the top of this uncharted reef isle
With Baini
and Aiyaz too,
The Tappoos and his brothers,
CJ Patels
The Brigadier General and his wife,
Here on BainiMarama's Reef.

So this is the tale of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The Dictator and the Taliban too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic reef nest.

No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on "Bainimarama's Reef."

Minerva Reef is also inside New Zealand's claimable EEZ although it has never made any claim to it.

@ Annon June 15th 1.06pm and

For those of you who believe that Minerva Reef is not important or find it a silly fight. Before I go further let me be clear I do not like Bainivuaka. However in regards to Minerva. It is actually important in terms of money i.e. EEZ. If Tonga claims it (Minerva) than Tonga's EEZ will Move closer to NZ's. Whilst Fiji's EEZ will move right back. The reefs per se isnt important its actually where that reef is located due to the EEZ and its range toward NZ. Whoever claims Minerva will have a large EEZ = more money to economy. Hence these claims.

In the 70's when Tonga claimed it, Fiji did not say anything or protested. Now that Fiji realizes how important these Reefs are, its pushing to claim them. Someone mentioned that its closer to Tonga. That is actually irrelevant if Minerva is in the EEZ of Fiji. Question is: Is it in the EEZ of Fiji or Tonga's? Heard from a NZ Navy guy that the Minerva Reef is in Fiji's EEZ and so it belongs to Fiji. So Who knows aye?

RE: Anon @ 5:17 PM

Absolutely loved the Gilligan's Island theme song. A fellow American, no doubt.

Now, I, myself, have not just received words of caution - but what I would consider, words of threat for "daring" to express my opinions" on this blog site (since no other avenue is available to any of us living in Fiji to express ourselves).

No doubt, other bloggers have received the same admonition and we all know the risk and what is waiting for us at the end of this dark, long tunnel.

I say, BRING IT ON! FREEDOM ISN'T FREE. Fiji is my country of choice but I am paying my taxes, bringing much needed money in and have been here for quite some time and (God forbid) obeying and trying to get laws on the books enforced. I am HERE! I have some say and I see what high-browed Fijians are doing to their brothers and sisters.

Go ahead. Do the only thing you know how to do. I know the risk. I have weighed it and I have decided to take it. Ya want to know why?

Because where I come from, you fight for a common cause. You fight for freedom. You fight for justice. Here, although we are all sucked in by the lie that says those things (ideals) are here, once you are here, you learn the truth.

Coups suck the breath out of everything and everyone. It's in their nature (like scorpions). A few select individuals take advantage of a populace that has already been endoctrinated to accept whatever comes their way.

Go ahead boys. Step it up a notch. Do what you do best (and the only thing you know). Act like robots and continue the absolute, utter and total destuction of the only place on the planet that you have to live on. BTW - the PM and AG and maybe even "yes" boy will have sprung their golden parachutes and will have abandoned you for their dubious countries of choice. John Galt

There is no need for Fiji to worry about Minerva Reef. UNCLOS is there to settle this matter.

Let us worry more about our daily life in Fiji and the difficulties we are facing; no PERSONAL ATTACKS OR personalisation...This is the responsibility of Fijians in Fiji, not the deserters overseas.....

Minerva?

The Minerva question was always there from 1972 when Tonga claimed it and push the US Corporation who want to set up Minerva Republic.

It was all agree to and Tonga never enforce anything on Minerva. Fijian fish in Minerva and Tongan fish in Minerva but not commercial fishing.

UNCLOS was design to help demarcate the EEZ of countries if it overlap.

Frank's and his goon aggressiveness and using the Military to destroy safety beacon on Minerva was the wrong option.. They should have a legitimate government who seek dialogue with Tonga on Minerva. Fiji chose for the military now earn a hard reaction from Tonga who will also use military and may seek assistance under Biketawa Treaty from Aust and NZ to defeat Franks junta.
Tongan claims are Minerva and the 12 miles Territorial water. Tonga EEZ will not be base on Minerva so internationally Minerva is Tongan territory with a 12 miles territorial water around which now within the Fiji EEZ. That is how the maps is drawn and the UN is likely to rule. Ono i Lau can be either claim by both but Tonga know it is and will always be part of Lau and Lau is part of Fiji.
A comment by another writer who said the King of Tonga is corrupt and he refernce it to Tongan in NZ should lighten up his brain that the Tongan are free to say whatever they want to say and no soldier will arrest them and beat them up. Tongan can say that in Tonga or anywhere...lol.. can Fijian say that in Fiji?

Anonymous said...

Voreqe will never take on Tonga. He is a coward and will not fight because Tonga has weapons also. Tonga is not a group of unarmed women. There is no cassava patch next to Minerva.

Vinaka anonymous 6.01a.m. for your comment. Fiji's continuing state of illegality under the Frankenstein junta rule is largely due to his "legal advisors" (and we all know now who they are, ha ha ha..!). Of course, the latter (and their cronies in the background still) have very little appreciation and so much CONTEMPT for cultural ties and close traditional links that the two countries have with each other.

So thank you Tonga for standing up to these armed thugs and bullies. Unfortunately, Fijians have yet to find their collective booming voice that'll be sure to shoo them out without a doubt!
