NZ government put on the spot over Mara

It may be harder for the former 3FIR Commander, Roko Ului Mara, to get into New Zealand than originally thought.

The Auckland-based Fiji democracy group has gone public about lobbying the New Zealand government not to give Mara a travel visa to enter the country, saying he was only recently a member of the military regime and shouldn't get one.

The spokesperson for the Coalition for Democracy in Fiji, Nik Naidu, also says it appears Mara has only joined the democracy movement because of a fall out with the regime and being charged for sedition.

Naidu says prior to that, Mara headed the regime's hit squad which was responsible for the torture of Fiji citizens at the barracks. He  says Mara's change of heart needs to be questioned.

"Suddenly he has seen the light and possibly because he has been removed from the military. It is a case of sour grapes we feel. He really is the worst type of officer in Fiji. He's the one who led a lot of the arrests, illegal detentions and tortures and how come he suddenly has become a supporter of democracy?"

Mara arrived in Australia yesterday and wants to visit New Zealand next as part of a Pacific-wide campaign to rally support against the Frank Bainimarama regime.

He's been given a Tongan passport, which may have helped him get his visa for Australia but New Zealand authorities say they're still deciding over his application and a request for an exemption.

But Naidu today told Radio New Zealand the democracy movement will oppose Mara's visa application and are writing to the Prime Minister, John Key, to register their opposition.

Naidu says they will also be asking New Zealand to clarify its position regarding the smart sanctions, where military are concerned.

Coupfourpointfive has also questioned the speed with which Key said Mara might be allowed into New Zealand.

While buoyed by the thought of the treasonous regime being brought down with the help of a former senior officer, this blog has not been blind to Mara's not-too-distant-past and the opposition to him.

We wrote to John Key on May the 25th after he told Kiwi media Mara was no longer military and he didn't see any reason why he shouldn't be allowed into New Zealand.

Among other questions, we asked Key the following:

1) Many people in Fiji would applaud you for saying Mara and his wife could be allowed into New Zealand. But there are others who think this is rash. Why have you been so sympathetic to Mara?

2) Other soldiers could see this as a way out for them as well. Would New Zealand be prepared to offer them political refuge as well?

3) Our readers have made the point that Mara is not a political prisoner - why then is he being taken off the travel ban list? Would New Zealand do this for a soldier who is not so well-known?

Key's office has confirmed our email but have not replied to our  questions.

The Leader of the Opposition, Phil Goff, however, sent us a statement that said in part this: "Tevita Mara is now effectively a political refugee. He can't go back to Fiji without the high risk of persecution, without expectation of a fair trial given that the independence of the judiciary has been subordinated to the control of the military regime.

"That means he could be considered for asylum. That however does not relieve him of being held to account in due course for the role he played in overthrowing Fiji's elected Government by force."

But Naidu thinks Mara "should go back to Fiji where he should be tried under those new rules, those draconian rules, that he helped put put in place. How come they're suddenly not good enough for him to be tried under when it has been okay for him to try all these other people in Fiji who've been fighting for democracy, to be tried and jailed under?"

That’s exactly the phenomenon of disparity we were fuming about this morning; where anyone who drums up a protest document claims to be a prodemocracy chief….and seems no Indian…

We the lay common folks of Fiji are caught in this tsunami of wanna be leaders for democracy.
Goodness, now a K F K…eh..(Kiwi Fiji Kaidia ) who probably has his Mrs as Secretary, son treasurer and brother, sister, uncle brother tabale as members of this so called prodemocracy entity.

... spoke to friends in North Shore, Kaukapakapa, Ack CBD, even Bay of Plenty, windy Wellington, Wanganui..99.99% do not know of this self glorified pro-democracy unit.

Conversely, here in Aust the once vocal Sydney branch seems defunct, while the US branch Preso is seems a lone voice in Midwest desert.

All we are saying is how are we gonna agree….even prodemocracy groups are at loggerheads..or may be the Auckland one has a thriving trade with the Co-Prime Ministers o attempt derail the end of Ratu Mara fishing expedition.

GIVE us A leader..and we will follow!!...who shall he or she be?????..AND LET THIS CIRCUS STOP !! now Co-Prime Ministers rule in Fiji..only monsters has more than one head!!..

Nik makes a good point - but I am not entirely sure that I agree with the reasoning: sure, Ratu Mara is a former member of the regime, but he will have to face the same charges and (probably) be a witness to the same crimes.

As to the election that is supposed to happen in 2014, its not gonna happen. Bainimarama now knows what will happen to him the moment Fiji goes back to democracy. The day Bainimarama leaves the post of Commander of Fiji Military, it will be the day he wish he was never born. That is why I say there will be no election in 2014. John Galt

Surprised at how people are being so racist attacking Nik (whom I also do not know) & surprised at how gullible Fiji people are to quickly forget what Ului & his family have done - they have directly contributed to the demise/missery/suffering of the people of Fiji, this family were supporting the coup and they have benefited from the coup that led to Ului being promoted beyond his capability, his 2 brothers in law one is the illegal President & the other was the illegal Minister of Defence (who resigned when his friend from Fiji water was being deported).

SO HOW IS ULUI GOING TO HELP FIJI? IF HE COULD NOT FIGHT VOREQE WHILE HE WAS WITHIN THE ARMY, HOW CAN HE FIGHT VOREQE FROM A DISTANCE? WILL TALKING TO THE PACIFIC LEADERS HELP? WHEN ALL THESE PACIFIC LEADERS HAVE BEEN TALKING TO VOREQE ALL THESE YEARS AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL ADVISES HAVE FALLEN ON DEAF EARS! SO THOSE OF YOU PUTTING YOUR HOPE ON ULUI - IT IS ALL WISHFUL THINKING. SORRY TO DISAPPOINT YOU ALL BUT THAT IS THE REALITY! ULUI IS NO LEADER, ULUI IS INCAPABLE OF DOING WHAT HE IS SAYING!!! WAKE UP FIJI - WE NEED TO USE A DIFFERENT STRATEGY!!! BALEDROKADROKA (WHO WAS VOREQE'S FORMER CHIEF OF STAFF) WENT AWAY & STARTED TALKING - WHAT DID IT DO TO VOREQE? NOTHING? WHERE IS BALEDROKADROKA NOW? THEN HERE IS ULUI TELLING US ALL NOTHING NEW, TALKING FROM A DISTANCE, SOON HE WILL BE HISTORY & FORGOTTEN! WHY ARE WE TRYING TO PUT OUR TRUST IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE FAILED US, COME ON PEOPLE OF FIJI - WE COULD DO BETTER THAN ALL THE BARKING FROM FAR FAR LAND!!! POWER IN THE PEOPLE (NOT GUNS)!!!

Not me thats for sure. He was the one that abused some Eleders in Lau, stopped those form Ono i Lau attending the meetings, now he is welcomed with open arms-all is forgiven! Yes, reminds me of the Rabuka era, btter still of George Speight when he was kissed at the BLV. Fijians just never learn!

Who cares about Naidu and this so-called "Coalition for Democracy in Fiji"? What have they done for Fiji since the last coup?

The people of Fiji the Taukei in particular are getting fed up for being the scrapegoat in this coup.

What Khaiyum attempted to do will kick him where it hurts when all is said and done.

Now the Indo-Fijians are realizing that maybe they were too fast in embracing Bainimarama and now the Taukei backlash that will follow this coup will see a lot of Indo- Fijians suffering.

Roko is the light at the dark end of the tunnel so if you cannot support...just back off!

The same bloggers have criticized Saiyaz and now they are criticizing
Nick Naidu. These critics are anti-Indian and damn racist. Why should Uli be invited to a NZ? He was one of the masterminds of 2006 coup. He escaped Fiji to save himself? There will be election in Fiji in 2014 under common roll. The 2002 and 2006 election were rigged otherwise Labour would have won it easily. George Shiu Raj.

The momentum is growing against Bai and Arse now they are scavenging around the dumpster and foud Nik Naidu to do their bidding...RUM is the only person who can command the respect of a wide cross section of Fiji to achieve a real change and a return to democratic rule and the rule of law...Bainiarse had been using RUM to bolster his legitimacy in the eyes of the Fijian people in the villages...Bainiarse does not want Democracy movemnent to use RUM's traditional influence which he had been exploiting...let us exploit RUM's influence to bring back democracy...he said that he is willing to front up to the people AFTER his mission has been fulfilled...lets remained focussed on the objective...Democracy and the rule of law not the rule of Bai's whim and fancy...thumbs to freedom for Fiji from Tyrants

Activity theory: Actions speak louder than words!

A man is the origin of his action. —Aristotle

Activity theory has its roots in early twentieth century Russian psychology. And yes, it’s influenced by the Bolsheviks and Marxism and even Kant. Activity theory is concerned with the human mind (who isn’t?) with two premises:

1. Human consciousness is unified with activity—that is to say, the human mind cannot be understood divorced from activity, and
2. The human mind is innately social; culture and society not only influence the mind, but are key to its formation.

If you must know, the point of activity theory is the understanding of humans and their social networks in their natural, everyday setting, with activity forming the foundation of the whole darned thing. “Activity” is defined as occurring when a subject acts on an object. Subjects are things that live in the world and have needs (for money, shower curtains, junkets to Vegas), and they are the sole participants in activity. (Subjects have all the fun.)

So in this theory, activity is the basic unit of analysis. This is waaaay out from most Western schools of thought (which try—emphasis on try—to understand subject and object separately); surprise surprise, activity theory focuses on the activity between a subject and an object. (Didn’t see that one coming, did ya?) For activity theory, the subject and object have no properties either before or after the activity occurring between them; the properties only exist in activities. Furthermore, activity is the source of development of both subject and object. Changes in the subject’s development are due to activities. Chew on that.

Everything humans do is directed at something (objects), whether it is a physical object (say, a rabid woodchuck) or an idea (a mental image of a rabid woodchuck). Mediation occurs between a subject and object, and is integral to activity. It is a tool that assists the action, although it is not always a physical object. Activity between a subject and object exist at different hierarchical levels, which is ironic for a Marxist-influenced theory. At the top of the hierarchy are activities (driven by motives), then below that level are actions (conscious goal-driven processes), and finally the oppressed operations (actions that have become automatic, or unconscious). Actions can become operations, while operations can become actions. Got all of that?

This traveling up and down the hierarchy depends on circumstances. A classic example of how the hierarchy operates is learning to drive a car: initially a beginning driver has a goal of learning how to drive a car (activity). While learning how to operate the car, the driver is engaged in conscious thought processes (actions) to avoid crashing it or running over the traffic cones in the parking lot. Once the driver is experienced, driving becomes automatic (operations), and then the driver starts doing reckless things like trying to shave on the way to work or steering with his knees while juggling a burger and Big Gulp in his hands.

However, if the driver needs to drive an unfamiliar car (say a rental after eventually rear-ending someone), there will be a period of time when some of the tasks that were automatic in the original, familiar car now require conscious thought. The tasks have moved up the hierarchy from the level of operations to actions. As the driver gets used to the unfamiliar car and its funky smell, the actions return to operations, and then it’s time to return the rental and get reacquainted with the (hopefully repaired) original car.

Because the human mind is part of culture and society, it engages in processes of internalization and externalization, processes that are responses to living in the world. With internalization, there is a redistribution from the external to the internal, and culturally developed tools effect mental processes. Think of the car example again—the external (operating the car) eventually becomes internal to the point of hardly thinking about it.

Iam not pretty sure whether Roko Ului is a candidate to lead Fiji.We the citizens of Fiji need to be very very cautious in selecting our leader for the future. At the moment we are treading on egg shells and there are sensitive matters about the running of the government. Fiji needs a man with vision, a man who knows his left and right and a man who can differentiate colours. A man with wisdom to lead Fiji's people and above all a God fearing person.

What Nik wants is irrelevant. The NZ govt will issue him a visa because they are keen to get their hands on any evidence that mara has, as well as grill him on inside workings of interim regime and militray council.
Nik Naidu, speaks for himself. There is no Auckland Fiji Democracy Movement. I live in Auckland , I should know. He represents no Fiji Islander, nor has he consulted any of us. Can Nik tell us who he speaks on behalf.
Mara presents the international community, NZ , Aust, human rights groups, regional govt, with a rare opportunity to obtain evidence on internal workings of the regime , but most importantly the full names and details of the silent backers ofthe coup...from businesses to the judiciary. People like Nik are so short -sighted and blinded by their personal hate, they can see the big picture. Of course no one for a minute is being fooled that Mara has suddenly turned over a new leaf. He along with others will face the full brunt of the law when this is all over, and to give the man his due, he knows that this will happen. Citizens of Fiji, including the international community will ensure they pay. So let's get with using Mara because he has offered to return Fiji to democratic rule. I for one do not want to see him and his ike ever be in a position of government in Fiji, and that is the process that we as Fijian's have to ensure.

WHY are you Fijians bullying Nickle naidu for his opinion?

You too were on the same path only months before.

Why some of you are putting him in the racist Indian group when his mother is a pure one of you?

So as a maternal side is concerned he is on the side of democracy but not the same definition of democracy you may want to potray.

A real clean up and not one that keeps going in circles.

Are you guys saying if Frank or Aiaz jump ship and come to realisation, will you say to them that since you have now joined Ului, it is all fine - we welcome you as our new heros for vacating the chair for democracy!

Maybe if you did this type of talk, there maybe some hope of democracy to return.

I call NZ and Austarlain Govt's policy as rewal prostitutes if they are taking Ului with open arms. I personally do not have any problems with that.

BUT what is the issue is if Aussies did not cancel the assholes citizenship, Aias had an outgoing option open to him.

So Aussies, call your Govt to give amnesty to those who were holding Australian PR's will get this back if they sign a form decalring they no longer have a relationship with the IG.

This will bring about sinking ship and not RUM. But Rum's own position is giving us not hope to return democracy, but to tell all so that this can help by naming names that will be good in the long term.

As for Nick, when he started talking about democracy most of you supported that coup of Rabuka.

So when you champaign democracy, you forget some facts. He gave his name while you go as anonomous.

So there...and Nick's cousin Richard was dumped at Wailoku and his aunty Shameema Ali had a walk down Mead Road and Princess Rd.

So if you think you represent democracy and have mandate, throw your names forward and numbers behind you..and why you have failed for 4 years to return democracy to date?

DON'T GET SMART and TALK CHEAKY WHEN YOU HAVE NO RESULTS TO SHOW IN 4 YEARS.

HOWEVER I WILL SUPPORT RUM AND DRITI AND ANY MILITARY OFFICER THAT HELPS REVEAL INSIDE INFORMATION. THIS WILL HELP ACHIEVE LONG TERM DEMOCRACY RATHER THEN SHORT TERM ONE TO ONLY PUT BACK SDL/FPL WHO could not follow the constitution when in parliament.

Sa Sucu Sa Lutu..

It is best that commentators stop being biased and racist with their comments.

The fact remains that a lot of us have lost so much during the last 20 plus years more so since 2006. Worst still are the traumatic experiences people have been experiencing during the past 4 plus years...

I will not be surprised at the possible increase in number of people with suicidal tendecies in the coming months.

You know...escalating cost of living, barely hand to mouth existence, not enough earnings, rising poverty, unpaid bills, inability to meet family, educational, and other obligations...do not forget the reduced pension rates and our elders at their age have nothing to lose....u name it.

We now live in a kind of enviironment where one watches one's back all the time, worse still for those who the majority of the people are blaming for all these hardships...

SO NIK NAIDU, WHILE YOU ENJOY YOURSELF IN NZ, WE ARE SUFFERING HERE. I WOULD RATHER ROKO ULUI MARA SPEAK ON THE PEOPLE'S BEHALF THAN YOU......

Rounding up of opinions expressed here....posted on other blogs indicate that most agree Ului has admitted his wrongs for joining the coup 2006 and roles he played and he has expressed his submission to necessary judicial processes in Fiji following return of democracy to which he will answere for wrongs committed.

But just now Ului and all of us have a common interest to bring down Vore dictatorship and return a Govt eleced by the people to run our country.

To achieve our common objective Ului can play a vitally important role based on his knowledge and experiences in the military. His highly publicised opposition over the last month or so has rattled Vore and his illegal regime big time as never been done before over the last 5 years. Ului's revelations has shifted the goal post significantly exposing Vore seriously in the eyes of the world and importantly in the eyes of Fiji Citizens.

This is why we want to support Mara, why NZ and Australia want to support Mara. He is a deadly weapon against Vore.

Right now he is useful to the course, never mind his past faults.

So welcome Mara to NZ. Haere mai...Haere mai...Haere mai. Kia ora katoa.

The national Party led Govt in NZ has indicated its willingness to grant Mara a temporary visa.....and we are happy about it.

Naidu's so called Pro-democracy outfit lives only in name, lacking substance.

What democracy are they fighting for, I cannot understand, if they are not with us, with Ului, fighting the Fiji dictator who is the number 1 enemy of democracy in Fiji. THUMBS UP FOR FIJI

Fact 1 - Mara and Driti were trying to overthrow Bainimarama. But Aziz ratted on them and the rest is history.
This is exactly what we are trying to do. So in a way we have the same goals.

Fact 2 - Bainimarama is a violent man and nothing but violence will remove him from his position.
Nikils Democracy Movement will not dislodge him.
Australia Democracy Movement wont disloge him.

The only thing that will unsettle Bainimarama is violence.

Bainimarama doesn't care if RUM is in Australia but he will definitely care if he hears that one of his soldiers wants to shoot him.
There are many ways that this can be done. I won't elaborate because Bainimarama reads the blogs.

However if Mara spills the beans, and the grunts in camp find out what Bai and Aiyaz are really doing, then I tell you, Bai won't sleep.

Media Release

Nick Naidu’s Public Outburst against Ratu Ului Mara
Exposes his Personal Agenda – Former Minister Rajesh Singh

The shocking outburst of the so called spokesman for the New Zealand-based Coalition for Democracy in Fiji, Nick Naidu reeks of personal agenda and self interest.
Mr. Naidu called on the New Zealand government to reject any visa application by the former Commander of the 3FIR to promote democracy in Fiji.
Firstly, Mr Naidu’s organisation is defunct. It has been deregistered and does not exist for all intents and purposes for which was initially established in 2000.
The rather extraordinary statement is motivated by other issues at play that the people of New Zealand or Fiji have no knowledge about.
Nick Naidu is closely associated with a NZ based Fiji millionaire who is under fraud investigations in Fiji of colossal nature. Mr. Naidu is closely connected to this businessman who is attempting to escape criminal charges for his criminal activities. The criminal file reference of this case is CID/HQ/PEP/128/2010.
Mr. Naidu is no longer pushing the agenda of those who seek democracy, social justice and rule of law in Fiji. This businessman has strong links in the illegal regime and it seems the statement is a trade-off for thwarting Ratu Mara’s democratic crusade in the Pacific in return for defeating the course of justice in the case of this high profile businessman.
Ratu Ului Mara and Brigadier Pita Driti can confirm that this Businessman approached the Military Council in August 2010 to terminated investigations against him and his Company by the Fiji Police Serious Fraud Unit.
It is understood that the Frank Bainimarama who invited the businessman to his China tour back in July 2010 has promised to prevent criminal charges against him. This is now becoming a case of mutual expediency of personal agendas.

Mr. Naidu himself has been making business trips to Fiji to solicit investments opportunities. Obviously, he knows that making the right political statements can win great friends and this is clearly visible from his senseless statement against Ratu Mara.
How can a businessman like him become a true flag bearer of democracy is a million dollar question.
Need I say more?

Who is Nik Naidu trying to get the NZ govt to prohibit Rt Ului Mara from entering NZ to speak to pro-democracy groups there? Get your head out of where the sun doesn't shine Nik and look at the BIG picture! If you want democracy in Fiji, then something needs to be done. Mara needs to tell the world of the dicatorship that is ruining Fiji right now - albeit he was part of it in the beginning...but has seen the light and the wrongs and atrocities committed by the Bainimarama Govt.. Like him, I thought Bainimarama was doing something good at the beginning (although I disagreed with the coup) - he had gotten rid of Qarase and his racist govt.

But I got dissillusioned as time went on - with the censoring of the press etc. Bainimarama was becoming our worst nightmare - and acting like Papa Doc of Haiti!

So Nik - get off your bloody high horse and do something constructive for Fiji for a change! You are out for blood...not forgiveness. Mara needs to spread the word! I'm glad that the Australians and the Fiji population in Australia are not as backward as Nik Naidu!

Naidu, does not know the hardship and militant action we are experiencing here in Fiji. If he really wants democracy in Fiji , he would support anyone who is making an effort to contribute putting Fiji back to democracy to some degree, like Roko Ului. He has admitted that is was wrong and that he will answer up to being part of the 2006 coup since he was part of the coup. The fact that he has admitted that he was wrong in his participation is an indicator that his mindset has changed and his interest is geunine . Unlike , the current regime who is deceiving us even though we see that the deceiption clearly.I am a victim of unfair justice in Fiji , the experience and the suffering i am encountering now with my family , makes me appreciate any one who tries to put Fiji back to Democracy a hero. As for you Naidu , you dont seem to know what your interest really is , because you are not a victim of the regime. So i suggest you reassess your interest on Democracy in Fiji. Hope you are not acting on some else 's interest or AG's interest. So please we the people of Fiji dont need that attitude right now!! we have suffered long enough let alone losing our jobs and trying to put one meal on the table ..THUMBS UP TO DEMOCRACY!!

When will the debriefing of RUM take place?
Democracy movements for Fiji in Australia and New Zealand, will you have a lawyer or two and a committee to stand in at a debriefing of RUM.
...or will this be to the Australain & New Zealand governments honour and we the people shall be kept in the DARK.

Coup 4.5, please try to get information for us or is everybody involved in democracy going to keep this hidden from the people....how surprising.

Oh, but this could all be considered sub-judice or some such...lmao
this is way better then Shortland Street.

The thing is, ossie intel , or local gossip already knows all but no proof, so lets hope RUM had a big esky, and not full of beer.

Annon 6.42pm

If all Chiefs are thieves than all the Groups below are as well:

1. Prime Minister because of the failures of past Prime Ministers.

2. the Lawyers and Accountants because of the failures of past Lawyers and Accountants in influencing decisions on Fiscal Policies and the scams and blunders and excessive Tax Concessions Claim that drained our Revenue base including our FNPF.

3. the non Fiji Residents, Dual Residents, Influential Hoteliers and Businessmen because of their shady deals and that their heart is really where their money is and not on Fiji s welfare.

4. certain Diplomatic Corps because of their subtle involvement in the past by pushing their political propagandas in Fiji's Political system through NGOs, Army, Businesses and other Operatives.

5.certain Political Leaders, Ministers who have been influencing Multi million dollars Govt contracts.

6. all Politicians that are initiating the LAND GRAB of the i Taukei.

7. the Army because of their involvement in the 4-5 Coups.

Etc...

Fiji have gone through 4-5 Coups and the people are more politically matured now than in 1987, 2000 and 2006 to blame only the Chiefs but other Groups and factors identified above are equally responsible.
