Fiji sources: Another Minerva stoush imminent

NOT OVER: Information from Suva says more Fiji boats on way to lagoon.

Tonga and Fiji are believed to be heading for another standoff over Minerva Reef in the next 12 hours or so.

Fiji intelligence sources in Suva say three naval ships carrying about 30 naval officers each, have been dispatched from the capital and are on their way to Minerva.

New Zealand media have reported the two countries engaged in a standoff on Friday, after the Fijian navy again destroyed Tongan navigational lights at the entrance to the lagoon.

It was reported two Tongan navy ships were sent to replace the equipment and to reassert the kingdom's claim to the territory.

Tonga's Deputy Prime Minister Samiu Vaiulu was quoted as saying: "Our navy went back to their navy and they ran away, because it is our territory."

Tonga's special adviser to the prime minister, Ahongalu Fusimalohi, has also been quoted as warning Fiji that if it attacks the new lighthouse it would be seen as an "act of aggression".

"We had two naval boats to install the beacon which was bought down by the Fiji navy."

The Fiji navy ship left the area but it's believed a military conflict was only narrowly averted.

According to reports, the two Tongan naval ships have repaired the equipment and returned to Nukalofa.

Fiji intelligence sources, however, say three Fiji naval boats are heading to the lagoon to join the one that engaged Tonga on Friday.

Sources say Fiji pulled its lone naval boat back but it is in a holding pattern and waiting for support.

Fiji Village is reporting the regime maintains the Minerva Reef is inside Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone as determined by the geographical coordinates.

It says the regime intends to look into what actions to take according to the Marine Spaces Act.

Fiji Village says according to Fiji Authorities, Fiji is a party to the 1982 United Nations Convention on The Law of the Sea and that it has complied with the requirements of article 75 of the Convention.

It says article 75 section(2) of the Convention reads that the coastal state shall give due publicity to such charts or lists of geographical coordinates and shall deposit a copy of each such chart or list with the Secretary General of the UN.

More respect for them.
You inherited leadership and your arrogance has caused your fall out from the military where you have to earn your leadership and respect. Taking orders from a commoner outranking you hurts doesn't it. It is not your birthright to take orders.

Now you are born again son of Ratu Mara with your new vision.

Your not worthy to serve in Fiji anymore

Now, a Fijian patrol boat has fled the Minerva Reefs – claimed by both nations – as two Tongan patrol boats challenged its presence.

Tonga's Deputy Prime Minister Samiu Vaiulu said the Fiji navy was discovered in a Minerva lagoon.

"Our navy went back to their navy and they ran away, because it is our territory," he told TVNZ last night. Nominally the Tongan mission was to reinstall a maritime beacon on Minerva, blown up by the Fijians.

Tonga's special adviser to the prime minister, Ahongalu Fusimalohi, warned Fiji that if it attacks the new lighthouse it would be seen as an "act of aggression".

Both sides have small fleets of patrol boats, provided through Australian aid, equipped with 20mm cannons.

Lord Horatio Bainimarama at the Battle of Trafalgar oops I mean Minerva Reef,,,

be interesting to see who is mad enough to fire the first cannon.

Uli Mara coming to NZ What a joke? Is NZ government supporting a former treasonist who with Voreqe overthrew the democratically elected government. His father did the same in 1987, when he couldnot take the defeat in 1987. It is late Dr Bavadra and Indo Fijians curse of what is happening in Fiji. Reap what you sow. In Australia there were 20 people in his gathering, in NZ there may be 5. May Late Dr Bavadra's soul rest in peace. He didnot deserve the way he was treated. He was the true MULTIRACIAL leader of Fiji. The Taukei movement used IndoFijians as the escapegoat that time. The same failed racist, failed supporters are blaming Aiyaz for all the problems.

@5:47 PM. Sorry dude. Your

Natural & Political Boundaries:

Not all political boundaries follow natural features.

Why don't we all just go ahead and re-draw the world's political boundaries from "a geomorphologic point of view", since, according to YOU, "minerva belongs to Fiji from a geomorphologic point of view."

Natural boundaries are created by nature and political boundaries are created by people.

Although natural boundaries sometimes influence political
boundaries, natural and political boundaries are often not the same.

Tonga first claimed the two unpopulated Minerva Reefs in 1971 after an American tried to create a republic on them.

This childish act by the Fiji Navy is so typical of Bainimarama who has proven over and over again that he is not fit to lead an army (or anything for that matter...maybe his household and that's about it!)....let alone a country. He is an embarassment to Fijians all over the world.

He speaks of Transparency (when addressing Accountants in Fiji), yet we have to witness his transparency in the goverance of Fiji!

His actions are truly laughable - are you sure he is Fijian and not from Zimbabwe? Could he be the son of Robert Mugabe? They think alike, act alike and in some instances, look alike!

Juat a thought and a friendly warning to Mrs Bainimarama and her children....if you are schooled in history (although I doubt very much that you are as Meli is a THUG like his Dad)....just remember what happened to the Tsar of Russia and his family during the Russian or Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The Fijians may not be as forgiving of other Fiji coups of the past...and especially with all the deaths and atrocities committed by Bainimarama and his goons. Bainimarama is a meglomaniac...and his family may just suffer the same fate as that of the Russian Royal family of 1917.

It is time, Mrs Bainimarama and your daughters (if you can read!) to let your husband and your father know that what he is doing to the people of Fiji is absolutely unforgiveable. Maybe the Fijians will take pity on you when the uprising begins and spare you the fate of others who have gone before. It is no use talking to Meli...as he has the same fanatic and distant look of his father (the light is on, but no one is at home!!)

Again this morning news is quoting him speaking on behalf of this Coalition for Democracy. Never heard of groups combining to form a coalition for democracy in Auck.

Nik creates this non-existent Coalition to ride for personal publicity and grandstanding.

Nick please you may have noticed that the NZ Govt does not take your message seriously. Mara's visit to NZ was decided 2 weeks ago and your arguments have not made any difference at all.

The Govt apparently is taking the rest of us who support Ului's visit to NZ more seriously.

We leave no stone unturned in our efforts to contact the PM and Ministers in our lobby to have Mara visit NZ and meet anti-Bainimarama people and NZ Govt representatives in NZ.

We invite you to also meet him with us and you will have the opportunity to directly question him in public.

Dictator Bainimarama says that he has no opposition because he is unelected: "no one can oppose us as we were unelected." (FT 24/2)

I'M SPEECHLESS. I knew he was a dysfunctional retard, but this takes the cake! Written by Arse in the pit toilet

Let’s ease down on hot air and provide Fiji and her people an alternative Government should be required to Government immediately..or are we going to have another Coup within the numerous Pro-democracy movements around the globe..

We wanna follow a Person, a leader….not necessarily a movement or groups of empty drum entities like the one under Auckland Bridge.

Minerva lies within Fiji's EEZ, So why is Tonga doing this?

Fiji and Tonga's relationship goes far back and much deeper than these coral heaps are worth.

Tonga should just back off, the Minervas lie within our territory. Asserting otherwise is just unrealistic. Are we all going to ignore the fact that Minerva is the traditional fishing grounds of ono-i-lau and that even though it is closer to Tonga, the Minerva Reefs are well within our territory, the same could be said for a few of the Lau Islands.Tonga knows this.

And for those wanting this conflict to be an issue of democracy and the regime - it isnt. Im sure any other sane, elected Government would make the same assertions. Lets just put the issue of Bainimarama and the regime aside and focus on the topic at hand, THE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY AND SOVREIGNITY OF OUR NATION - FIJI.

P.S - It's SAD that just because of the hate for the regime that citizens of this country would actually entertain this fickle fuss and go further to actually support Tonga.

@11:34 AM. It belongs to Tonga. Period. Minerva Reef is regarded internationally as Tongan territory.

Just when did this non-existent Coalition pop up out of nowhere? The NZ Govt does not take NN's message seriously. Why are you? Ignore him. He's all talk - who is out there just for the limelight.

@Anon 11:34- The reason why we make this an issue about this incompetent regime is because it wasn't an issue with either state until now. Why? because these navy fools went and destroyed a beacon which for no apparent reason and to the detriment of maritime activity in the area. This is why we say its a Bainikhaiyum issue because this is happening under their watch and on their orders. Previous governments did not have any issues with Tonga, its only when undeducated soldiers who are unfit to lead are put in charge that they start making foolhardy decisions without though to diplomacy and regional respect.

So what's the worse that a face-off between Tongan and Fijian naval PATROL vessels can do?

They are PATROL vessels and are not armed (recalling of course that both sets of vessels are the cast-off's from Australia).

Worse case scenario they'll take pot-shots at each other with rifles. Best case scenario they face-off and stare at each other and then perhaps a friendly game of Marco Polo in the water LOL.

Fiji is playing right into the hands of Polynesia-dom, Australia and NZ and Biketawa.

History says that the first goverment established in the whole of Fiji was in V/balavu(lomaloma)by Ma a fu(Tongan)and as we all know the lauans have close relations to the tongans, which allows Roko Ului to seek for assistance there.

With all that Roko Ului has been and is still doing to the current fiji goverment,I feel that Bainimarama is been moved by Roko Uluis actions.

Curiosity
-what is Bainimarama doing in Lau?
-What is the catch on the new boat arriving for V/balavu Fishing Industry?
-What is this sudden concerns on damages by cyclon Thomas?
-Is he worried about the unity on the people of Lau supporting their Chief?
-Is he working on the disagreement between the people of Lau and their Chief?
-When did the discution and purchase of the fishing vessel for the V/balavu community come to news?
-WHAT IS THE CATCH WITH ALL THESE SUDDEN CONCERNS ABOUT THE LAUAN-AREA?
-Is it because they are close in relation to Tonga and on Chart?

People of Lau: Dont be easly persuaded,Bainimarama once said that we the people of Fiji are to speak for ourselves and not through the GCC which he is still trying to dismental.Yes Roko Ului is my Chief and I stand by him cause I find it courageous for him to admit his wrong doings during his term and is willing to answer to it when the time comes.
Bainimarama has managed to isolate fiji from neigbouring countries (Nz,Au,...) and now moving the isolation closer over a reef.Well like the laughing Samoan say "I cant belive it"

IO Dua mada mai Keri.

@ Agent Mahone and Tui Viti Why don't you move to Tonga or go live on Minerva Reef both of you.
Soldiers believe in the chain of commmand execute their duties without question from their superior officers. There is no sin and injustice in that.Belief in this Governement of the day in delivering the nation from its corrupt past.We Stand united and consolidated on this issue and make no apologies on the stupid few who get in the way and get hurt.

Question of Minerva being Tongan or Fijian is no problem. UNCLOS is there as tool to handle such dispute as civilised countries. The way the current Fijian regime is using to reinforce her claim by using military to destroy the beacon that Tonga built is unacceptable by Tonga. Baini just made the biggest mistake in his political and military career. Baini is claiming that Aust and NZ are the bullies in the Pacific but he is doing just that by thinking that the military might he have is enough to scare Tonga off. Miscalculated move and very poor strategy. Malo 'aupito

Tonga was Fiji closest ally a few years back when Tonga persuade Fiji to try and move the country back to democracy.

Now Tonga is Fiji worst nightmare. Tonga will never step down after what Bani and his goon did in Minerva last year: Blow up the lighthouse.

It is a matter of honour for Tongans after being treated like that and I am afraid that we are heading toward War.

For Tongans it is better to die with Honor than to live with shame...
