International community forced to put in the hard yards over Fiji rugby

DOUGHY MIX: Springbok protesters, police and players  in Hamilton in 1981 after the pitch was flour bombed.

The illegal regime's insistence members connected to the military should be allowed into New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup is causing unnecessary grief.

New Zealand reiterated yesterday any management or players connected to the military won't be allowed in.

But the chair of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee president, Vidhya Lakhan (pictured top right), has decided to go one better and call on the FRU to boycott the tournament if New Zealand sticks to its decision.

The voice of reason is coming through, though. The Fiji Times is quoting former Fiji Rugby Union chairman Bill Gavoka (pictured) as warning against such a boycott.

Gavoka is quoted as saying Fiji could be treated like the South African Springboks, who were left out in the cold during the era of apartheid if the International Rugby Board decided to sideline Fiji.

He says the IRB helped fund four years of preparation and "hard work and investments would be wasted in the drain if Fiji decides to bypass the high-profile tournament".

"The idea of boycotting the world cup is quite silly," says Gavoka. He says with 118 countries playing rugby under the guidance of the IRB, a boycott "will only invite derision and get us nowhere".

"Preparing the world cup event takes four years and costs hundreds of millions of dollars; how do you think IRB will view a boycott? Would they want to have a relationship with a country that reneges on its undertaking? It's not as if the boycott by NZ came up only yesterday, it's been there for years."

Gavoka says Fiji knew about the restrictions, yet still wanted to be part of the event. He said Fiji could still field a top-class team with players who qualify for New Zealand visas.

"Let's take it on the chin and go to the world cup. Rugby is too important for us."

The IRB has been trying to tread carefully on the issue but it's unlikely it'll emerge with a win/win situation.

The Business Review paper in New Zealand is quoting the IRB chief executive, Mike Miller, as hoping for the best.
"If people can talk quietly behind the scenes then often things which some people think can't be resolved, can be resolved. But talking about it in public really doesn't help," he told Radio New Zealand.

"I am confident that Fiji will come to Rugby World Cup, I am confident that all the matches will take place in New Zealand, and I am confident that Fiji will equip themselves very well in this Rugby World Cup.

"They've been playing very well and they will have a very good team in New Zealand."

Miller says he won't make assumptions about whether Fiji would have to send a second-rate team to the tournament. "We'll just have to wait and see what team turns up when the Rugby World Cup begins."

As some Coupfourpointfive bloggers have already said, it's management who'll be affected by the ban not players. So the FRU (Bainimarama and Tikoitonga and co) should do right by Fiji rugby and back off. Or is their plan to make this a Melanesian Spearhead Group Rugby World Cup? Now, that would be that be ridiculous.

The Rear Admiral Co-Prime Minister sould be told that Vidya will provide him a 3D screen to help create a reality experience and atmosphere he'd miss in NZ.

But, why not NZ allow the Co-PM and all his Military Rugby Council to the RWC. Just may….may an opportunity for these prodemocracy gurus to execute a “citizen arrest” and drag them to the International Court.

Of course, the Fiji Government in exile may want to issue her own arrest warrants.

Then, Rear Admiral will just take up Vidya’s offer or else watch RWC TV at Her Majesties pleasure from Paremoremo or Mt Eden ….eh…Hotel.

The rugby ball is in the Rear Admiral’s court…

I wonder if any of the rugby players gathering in Suva this week have any moral fibre?

The great Jonhu Lomu from NZ was a man of his religious convictions and withdrew from the All Blacks team because a test match was to be played on a Sunday.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of the top Fijian players withdrew from the trials in protest at the militarization of the FRU.

After all, the FRU is now just a branch office of the illegal and immoral military junta.

According to NZ's Herald this morning its all over anyway. No discussion needed. Key has stated No Fijian players connected to the Military or the Gvt will let in.Who does that leave?...The Marist Brother first fifteen and the Suva grammar Hockey team? Laugh.

To Ului in Tonga.
There have been numerous discussons on the ethics of having Fiji military engagement with the UN on Peace Keeping. Most suggest that Fiji participation is ironical, absolutely farcical to and in the face of Fijians living under dictatorial misrule and supression of basic human rights back home in Fiji.

Witdrawing Fiji's participation from Peace Keeping although negative in economic impacts on participating soldiers, will have an overall demoralising impact on the illegal rulers in Fiji, so its a positive from anti-Bainimarama viewpoint.

Can you please Ului comment on Fiji's participation in Peace Keeping next time you speak on Youtube. Tell us how you will assist in stopping Fiji's participation as most anti-coup public are against it.

THANK YOU VYDIA FOR RAISING ILLEGALITY AND ATROCITIES OF FIJI REGIME ON TO WORLD STAGE

Vydia all you are doing is raising the level of international awareness and discussion on Fiji Rugby Union issues with NZ and the causes of the disagreement.

The root cause of spat between FRU and NZ Govt is dorminated by the military coup in Fiji, Bainimarama's personal torture of women, killing of an unborn baby in mother's womb, murder of innocent citizens, torture of innocent citizens, deprivation of Fiji Citizen's human rights and illegality of the current dictatorship.

Thank you for your contribution. Please carry on with your outbursts through international media, giving us anti-coup brigade the work of follow up explanations to questions which inevitably will be generated by your highness.

Top marks to you Vydia. I had already responded to 4 media ENQUIRIES today from within NZ.

He does this by taking his ball and going home thus ending the game and any fun the participants were having.

The expression "I'm going to take my ball and go home" when directed at an individual is used to illustrate the individual's immaturity when that person can't get his way and no longer wants to be a participant in the game or a contributor to Coach Clappy's offense.

Lakhan can cry all he likes but the mere concept that the FRU would boycott the tourament is ludicrous. (Still thinking you have your weight to throw around as an ILLEGAL dictatorship?) Now do you see, both of you puppets - you may be able to supress your own people but you cannot supress democratic rule in the rest of the world? The players will want to play. The military robots need to stay in their prison, Fiji (Yes, you have made it that for them AG/PM!). Otherwise, it's YOUR loss NOT the world's. They DON'T need you and the games will play on.

I hope that you see that your world has become much, much smaller as the days have rolled on. Oh, yes, we all know that you are trying to sell us to China, India and Dubhai but let's just see if they REALLY want to buy into something that may well turn into more than they bargained for. You may believe you can choke us, the people, but we do NOT stand alone.

RE: ex Fiji tourist @ 12:45 PM

I agree. Let's see if our top Fijian players don't show more moral courage and fortitude than our military has and withdraw from the trials. The world is watching and anyone worth their merit WILL have a very good chance of being picked up by an International team. On the other hand, our "military army soldiers" may have no value at all. They don't to us and I don't think, with their behavior and their lack of understanding of their true job description, they have any merit for value in the International community. Hey, I just had a thought! It could be DANGEROUS for the UN to accept Fijian soldiers for peacekeeping missions abroad. Word on the street is, for an extra $200 per day, they will sell their own mothers! NOT a good soldier to have in countries where we are fighting enemies such as Alqueda (sp?) and the Taliban who would be willing to buy them for that price!

Lastly, per the front page of the Fji Sun (set) today, the AG/PM are saying that all counter talk to the "regime of the day" is being propagated by former political adversaries. The joke on him is that he has NO IDEA how many people from all walks of life HATE everything he stands for. Not politicians, not ex-journalists, just ordinary folk.

What you are is a blank mirror, were you to stand in front of it. You are smoke and mirrors like Oz in the "Wizard of Oz" and we all now see you for what you truly are. A power hungy, money devouring narcisist who has become paranoid and still thinks he can buy future votes with empty false promises. You are a VERY little man indeed! Joh Galt

Ex-Fiji PM wants 'tainted' case thrown out

FORMER Fiji prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry, who faces a string of tax evasion and money laundering charges, has claimed the case against him is tainted and should be thrown out.

Mr Chaudhry was charged last July with a dozen counts of money laundering, tax evasion and failing to declare foreign currency sitting in an Australian bank account.

It is alleged he held up to $400,000 in a Commonwealth Bank of Australia account and $50,000 was given to his daughter in Australia without the necessary procedures being followed.

Almost a year on, Mr Chaudhry appeared in Suva's High Court this week to raise concerns that the case had been improperly handled, the Fiji Times reported.

Mr Chaudhry's lawyer, his son Rajendra Chaudhry, told the court there was evidence in a police officer's affidavit that Fiji's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had interfered with the police investigation by not following correct procedures.

The lawyer said his client had sent several letters to the DPP requesting information and clarification of the charges, but there had been no response.

And in a fresh twist, Rajendra Chaudhry said he also discovered that the case was no longer being handled by the DPP but by a Queen's Counsel in Hong Kong.

The high-ranking lawyer was claiming fees of more than five million Fijian dollars ($2.6 million), which the state had been unable to pay, explaining the hold-up with the case.

During the hearing on Tuesday, state prosecutor Nancy Tikoisuva told the court she believed Mr Chaudhry could be accessing funds in his Australian bank account, despite a court order not to.

Justice Daniel Goundar said the prosecution should make necessary applications if it thought bail conditions had been breached.

The case is due to continue on September 12.

Mr Chaudhry became prime minister in May 1999 but was deposed exactly one year later in the nation's third coup, and then held hostage for 56 days.

He was an early supporter of the fourth coup staged by military leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama in December 2006.

However, following the country's 2009 constitutional crisis, Mr Chaudhry heavily

Can the "Juan Antonio Samaranch" of Fiji Sports present to the people of Fiji positive developments/achievments which should justify his current standing?
And during his reign as the Fiji Sports Federation Chaiman, what has FASANOC achieved on the global stage?
I am thinking that it was a good idea to knock Fiji out of the Commonwealth because we have nothing credible to offer to the games for that matter..with the exception of the flagbearer and of course the flag. Where have all our current prominent athletes gone to? Some have gone overseas "for training" only to disappear into thin air! Fiji used to have prominent athletes like Saimoni Tamani, Usaia Sotutu etc, and these two are world reknowned.
No wonder, a distinguished (only in Fiji)long and triple jumper ended up as the coach of the Fiji Netball.

NO means NO!!! In simple english, a kiddy knows and undersatnd that. Oh!!!,,, even an 18month old baby does. When NZ reiterated that there will be no players or officials who is deemed to be part of the Military allowwed to enter NZ for the coming world cup, I believe we know what that means.
If there are officials in the FRU who have military connections, there is nothing wrong in that. They are just there to oversee the operation of rugby in Fiji. It doesn't mean they automatically be officials to the world cup. Tikoitoga is the Chairman of the FRU and not the Team for the world cup. The FRU has elected Pio Bosco as the manager of the Flying Fijians to the world cup, supported by the managers and coaching staff.Since Keni Dakuidreketi is not part of the Military, he will be the FRU's rep to the inaugural oval game. If they have any brain, they will not seek avenues to send him to NZ cos he will not be allowed. Dahhh!!!!
As for the players, I am not trying to belittle the players with military ties. From the current pool of players that we have locally and overseas, there will be no players with military ties picked for the coming world cup team. They dont stand any chance against the vast pool of players that we have.As for Matawalu, its hard to displace the two top halfbacks in Kenatale and Vatuvoka. And for Tonawai and Nakarawa, I believe there are so many loose fwds in the Fiji team and they also dont stand a chance.
So ruling out the players chances of making the cut for the team to the world cup and Tikoitoga staying back in Fiji to organise the welcoming ceremony for our warriors, we have nothing to cry over about the issue about boycotting the world cup. We can only see how they want to politicise the issue.
If the Rugby Unions Officilas in Fiji truly have rugby in their hearts, the best thing to do is change the Chairman of FRU. If they have the welfare of the players in mind and think of their future, change the Chairman of FRU. We can't entertain to have someone onboard who will put everyone at risk.
As Mr Gavoka has stated, the ban on Military personel has been in place since 2006. Why all the fuss now. Did the ppl who vote for the officilas have vision in mind or question themselves before electing Tikoitoga to be the chairman?? The ban on military pers in NZ doesn't cover the rugby players or officials. No one with military ties can go to NZ for vacation, transit or any other reason under the sun. So why the stupid Lahkan suggest that we boycott the world cup. I understand that he is an official for FASANOC. Do we have such ppl if Fiji leading such sporting organisations??? making comments without looking at the repercussions of what they say. Am sorry to say that.
The solution is simple. Dont let anyone with Military ties be part of the World Cup Campaign. Short and sweet. Why trying to sabotage every players dream of playing in such a tournament just because of the few who doesnt deserve all the hoolala that is goin on.
My sugesstion is, send our warriors to the World Cup. They will surely shine and make us proud of the Fiji we all Love. As for Tikoitoga, for the benefit of FRU and all rugby lovers of Fiji, do the honourable thing, resign and go back to QEB. There are better things for you to do out there. Like working on your exit plan with FB...LOL!!!
God Bless Fiji Rugby, the hard working players and FIJI!!!!
All the best from Santa Rosa, California!!!!

While I support Fiji, not in its current costume.
There is wide spread talk of another springboks style mass demo here if RFMF croonies enter NZ under guise of RWC. Remember, it is also just before NZ elections, so will have a huge grass roots following for other political parties to make a stand,,NZ Govt will not let that happen. Lahkan you imbersile - It is one thing supporting a team that goes with a democratic Government in place where players are picked on merit and another with a Mataivalu ni Solisona dominated team picked by the power of the gun who do not even deserve to be at the trials in the first place.

NZ have done the right thing and the world rugby Community will not miss anything if Fiji boycotts as the tournament will go on whether you like it or not.

You should go take a hard look at yourself in the miror as while you have been swindiling FASANOC Money over the last 30 years Mahen " The Man" has been fiddling with your wife as obviously you could not get it up for her - You Dickhead, loser.

Vidya Lakhan shoots off like a mad fool. He shud learn to engage his brains first before his mouth. His talk of boycott is more of a political statement than that of a sportsman. That kind a statement shud be left to the rulers. you are just ruining all the ongoing backstage talks between lobbyists from both sides. Ratu Tasere was right. Since did this guy became the spokesperson for rugby.

I feel NZ was showing positive signs of softening its stand until Mara started to hit the media with his revelations. Whether they were true or fabrications, it just made Keys and Mcully turned the other way and I do not think they will ever turned our way again before Sept.
