Fellow Citizens of Fiji
 
Today I will talk about the future of our beloved Fiji. I will start the discussion about the Fiji that the people want and deserve and not the hated military junta thrust upon them by Khayum and his hand puppet, Bainimarama.

Firstly I call upon Khayum and Bainimarama to end the Public Emergency Regulation (PER). If they are doing good a job, as they say, they have nothing to fear. The papers will sing their praises and the public will only march in support of the illegal military junta. Why then are they too scared to remove PER? The military junta won’t remove PER because they know without it they would be driven from power by the voices of the people.

I have received so much support from both inside and outside Fiji, I know that the time is right for Khayum and his puppet to step down. Frank you were my commanding officer once. Now I am free to say these words. “You have been in charge for nearly 5 years, You talk about following a roadmap to true democracy in Fiji. Once again you are lost because Fiji is not heading anywhere for democracy because it is already a dictatorship. Instead of taking the country forward, the only direction you have lead Fiji is backwards. Now it is my duty to ask you to step aside and let the people of Fiji pick the Prime Minister they want. "

Over the coming weeks, I will travel the region to discuss with the Pacific leaders the real situation in Fiji and I will discuss the Roadmap on how we will return Fiji to democracy in the shortest time. Unlike your Roadmaps, it will be published within the next 2 weeks and not remain a mystery to the people years after being announced.

I have already started to talk to people who share my cause both inside and outside Fiji. Their support has been overwhelming and many are positively looking at their own contribution to bringing about democracy in Fiji.

I have also been touched by the emails, phone calls, and comments on the Internet. Thank you it means a lot to me that so many people say I am doing the right thing. Many of you are putting your faith in me to bring about the end of this military junta. I will not let you down.

Fellow Citizens Who Want Democracy, I want to ask you all to do one small thing for me. Whenever you meet your friends, your family and your colleagues I want you to give a “thumbs up for Democracy”. You will be doing nothing illegal you cannot be arrested by the police; you cannot be taken in by the military. But everywhere you go, smile at the people you meet in particular soldiers and policemen and give them the thumbs up, you will be moving Fiji ever closer to democracy.

Finally to the illegal government spokeswoman, as an Australian we welcome you back to our beloved country, having returned from five months of leave paid for by the taxpayers of my country it is about time you earned the money and started speaking the truth because Australia is certainly one of the best democratic countries in the world where it symbolizes freedom of individuals in particular freedom of speech, I now challenge you to convince the Junta to lift media censorship immediately. Otherwise we the citizens of Fiji would rather not hear nor see you misinforming us in the future.

Blogger Sutradhara, clearly inspired by the reaction to his earlier article posted on FDN, has written another piece, this time on the legacy of Ratu Mara. We support its theme.

No-one who was there when we lined the streets of Suva to pay our final respects to Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara will forget it. People mourned not only the loss of a great man but also the lost opportunity he represented.

Attacked by Butadroka and his Fijian Nationalists for ‘selling out’ the Fijian people, he was also attacked by the National Federation Party and the Fiji Labour Party for ignoring Indo-Fijian interests.

Ratu Mara always had a bigger view, bigger than the Fijian Nationalists, bigger than the leaders of the NFP and the FLP.

The NFP and FLP claimed to speak for cane farmers but they never gave Ratu Mara credit for the Agricultural Landlords and Tenants Act, which extended all ten year cane leases for a further twenty years. This failure to acknowledge his leadership on land made them smaller men. They could have sought to stand behind him on his leadership on land, but their vision was smaller. Their aim did not extend beyond their own immediate political advantage.

When the extended leases ran out, there was no Ratu Mara to provide the leadership and the bigger vision needed to find a new framework for leasing Native Land.

Unlike the prickly dictator who now rules Fiji, Ratu Mara could ignore the slings and arrows hurled at him by smaller critics. He was a man of far greater stature than his rivals.

Ratu Mara’s critics attacked him for stepping forward to head an Interim Government after the coup of 1987. They said he could have stopped the coup, that it couldn’t happen without his approval, and yet they attacked the legitimacy of his leadership. They knew he was the bigger man. He was the man of real stature, but they could never admit it because they knew they were lesser men.

This is just what our dictator fears after the defection of Roko Ului. He has not yet proved he has the same stature as his father, but it is clear that the dictator fears that he will rise to the challenge. What we need is another Ratu Mara. Let’s hope we now have one.

RUM is talking to opposition groups in Fiji. "People back home are slowly realising that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is someone who is talking about returning to democratic rule. There are various groups who are opposing the military regime of Bainimarama and Khaiyum, when we will be united we will be stronger and our voice can be heard. In the coming weeks we will take a more pro-action stance," he said.

RUM said it was clear that the regime was working toward implementing the ideas in a Sayed-Khaiyum's master's thesis, "Cultural Autonomy, its implication for the nation-state, the Fijian Experience", where he said that Khaiyum advocated the elimination of special rights for indigenous people and the removal of the right of indigenous Fijians to own land exclusively. "Khaiyum had written the thesis and Bainimarama is using the Fiji military to turn this thesis into a reality," alleged Ratu Tevita. "He has [already] nullified the two paramount institutions for Fijians, the Great Council of Chiefs and the Methodist Church."

The biggest mistake Fiji could make is to back this fulla as some kind of democracy hero. His family is a big reason why we're in this mess in the first place.

Mara's father should have groomed people who could take over from him smoothly. Instead he and his wife spent 40 years keeping rivals in check and making sure they stayed at the top.

If Roko Ului is such a big deal, why isn't he Tui Nayau? There's no leadership in Lau so can someone tell me why this guy is fit to lead the country? Roko Ului can't even keep Voreqe out of Tubou.

First of all Mara needs acknowledge that a Coup is always wrong ( including the one he organised with Voreqe).That taking what is not yours is wrong ie whether it's the government that was voted in by the people or somebody elses wife. It is called stealing.
Secondly he must pay for his misdemeanors. Him and all who conspired with him, including the Judges and those of the Labour Party and the Catholic hurch etc etc.
We all make mistakes but crimes must be punished. No "forgiveness in the traditional manner", bulubulu or i soro or matanigasau etc.
This is the Biblical way.
In the Bible someone always pays.Freedom is NEVER free. Someone always pays.

Speaking during a military parade at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua yesterday, Commodore Bainimarama said their support helped bring about changes that would assist Fiji prepare for the general election in 2014.

"These changes should not only take us forward to a better Fiji in 2014, but to take us forward to a better Fiji for the sake our children and our grandchildren," Commodore Bainimarama said.

He said the changes had led to positive growth in Fiji’s economy.

“Our economy, our foreign reserve keeps on increasing reaching $1.4 billion today. We’ve been over the $1b mark for quite a while,” he said.

Commodore Bainimarama said the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) recently announced that Fiji’s economy rose from 1.3 per cent to 2.7.

“It is a result of our mobilising our economy.”

Commodore Bainimarama said mobilising the economy helped Fiji realise her true potential.

“This is one of the major priorities of Government before we reach the election deadline,” he said.

I'm sorry, but some Fijians just can't seem to see that the chiefs aren't the backbone of Fijian culture, the ordinary i'taukei are. Who goes fishing and works in the teitei? Who struggles to send their kids to school and support their elderly parents? Not the chiefs.

Don't be fooled. Roko Ului is engaged in this power play to seize back his family's influence in national life. The whole history of Fiji has been of competing chiefs squabbling over the national spoils and manipulating their subjects in the process. If he was such a great democrat, why didn't he resist the 2006 coup in the first place?

Io, the real threat here is to something far more important - the ability of we Fijians to hold onto the independence of our country

Mara will only triumph as a client of the Aussies and Kiwis, who have always used Fiji for their own purposes. Sure as the sun rises over Lakeba, they will make him their "hero of democracy". But it won't be to benefit the Fijian people but to benefit him and themselves.

He will be their stooge because they put him there, just as these big countries do all over the world to small places like our beloved Vanua. Be very careful my fellow Fijians. Au tukuna e dua na ka bibi vei kemuni.

This is the call of an opportunist who was one of the biggest thugs of the 2006 coup. He admits himself that he abused our heroic pro-democracy campaigners . Now that he's fallen out with the chief thug, why should we trust him?

Yes, God has given us an infinite capacity for forgiveness in Fiji if someone says sorry. But remember what the bible says: " By thy actions, ye shall be judged". Right now, we need to witness a genuine change in Mara's attitude, to not just talk the talk but walk the talk.

We should be very fearful when someone like Kevin Rudd in Australia wants to take this guy under his wing. This is not for our benefit but Australia's. I want to hear Mara promise not only a return to democracy but to tell us how it will happen. Not another Mara in Government House doing what the Aussies tell him because they put him there and nothing changing for the rest of us.

It seems clear that Frank and Khaiyum wants to fight elections in 2014. By thi stime the economy will bounce back naturally given that the floods destroyed this a lot since his time.

It appears that by 2014 there will be improved cane harvest and sugar production by which time farmers will start supporting him if not now.

There will be an improved bumper crop from sugar this season given a lot of silt deposit from last years flood will have fertilised the same fiels that was considered loss in last years flood.

Together with the devaluation now, the ongoing Foreign Reserve has increased which means there will be enough money to pay back foreign debts or able to take more debts even.

So come 2014, the status will be such that will be said that IG turned Fiji around after years of neglect by SDL....

So Ratu Ului's call out may be going un-noticed by the junta. PER will therefore continue and thus dictatorship will continue because it must achieve something first to see that they control the Govt after election.

Fiji Dollar was devalued in real terms by approximately 25%; therefore, if you really talking about reserves of $1bilion it is realistically $700 million or some 2 months import reserves pre coup time. The economy has gone backwards. Almost no investor confidence and unemployment keeps on rising. Why would any smart investor wants to invest in Fiji where the clueless commerce commission dictates what and how one should run thier businesses. There is no indipendence in the judiciary system. No freedom of speech. Can you imagin living in your country without having any say on how should our country be managed? Why are we taking this crap - it is like being raped by bunch of rascals in day light front of thousands of people who just stands there and not having the courage to stop this insane activity. Baini had no choice. He had to protect Fiji's interest, as the global financial crisis was around.

There is no point in democracy if it is not fair and equal to all chiefs or no chiefs.

It does not matter whether Mara, Frank, Qarase or anyone else wants to be PM. It's about giving all the people the power to chose who will be PM and the power to remove PM's and representatives who do not perform.

All adult persons who have not committed a criminal offense should be eligible to put themselves forward for election. It does not matter what their politics or history is. In the end the people will decide with their votes. You need to have confidence and support the process even though you might disagree with the result.

That is the secret to successful democracy - loyalty to Fiji and the process but NOT loyalty to political parties and politicians. Education is required for this to happen. This is currently not happening and Fiji is becoming polarized and full of hatred as a result what of this military regime has done.

It will take a lot of external help before Fiji can achieve fair elections. It is a similar situation to what occurred in East Timor after the Indonesian military rule was removed.

In his latest message, notice how Roko Ului doesn't rule out anything other than being part of a caretaker government. Of course, he doesn't want that. He wants to be THE government. An elected dictator just like his father. Notice how he doesn't address the main point of a lot of these postings that this is all about restoring the Maras to power. We're not from Minfo, Ratu Tevita. We're Fijians who remember what life was like under your family. Your father with his nose in the air and your mother with her nose in the trough.

The realty mate is the fijian people are much happier today than what any other of the past governments have done. It is only a handful of people that are in discomfort.
You are trying to potray yourself as a future leader of this country, fine I respect that. But do not think that your father's achievements, and your traditional status gives you the right over any other person or a free ticket. You want it earn it. Elections in 2014 will give you that opportunity.
I left Fiji 5 years ago after working in Fiji for only 2 years in the consulting engineering sector vowing to never return.

I feel now is the right time to come back home and help the country get back on its feet.

Don't spoli things now. Let it run it's course.

In order to legitimize his advocacy for democracy Roko Ului should demonstrate his sincerity and illustrate unselfish leadership that the country craves by recusing himself from running for office when Fiji runs its next election. In addition, they should also ban anyone from running in the next election who has been politically associated with or benefited from the current regime. This ban would apply for only one election cycle. We've lived in this political culture of secrecy since 1987....we've been denied political transparency(TRUTH) by consecutive regimes who's promised to provide it. And never did! The most beneficial role Roko Ului can play is to resist the temptation of power for the second time and help find ways to honor the long-suffering citizens of Fiji. By facilitating the kind of transparency that will illuminate the historical record and contribute to the elimination of the political patterns and conditions that have fostered/shaped our coup culture. This is the kind of political leadership the country needs....it is the kind of leadership Roko Ului is perfectly situated to provide now. And he does not need political office to do that.

Well let's just see what Mara really intends ----. It is more than time for him to make wrongs right, without expecting any benefit from it.

Five and a half years into the illegal dictatorship and he has just now gotten the picture. I, for one, will reserve judgement until I am certain that he wants to atone rather than benefit - until I am sure this is not the proverbial case of one scorpion stinging another. I have direct knowledge of how Mara has helped to strip this country of its riches for his own personal benefit. A leopard doesn't change its spots. We'll see.

He and his kind have used Fiji all throughout history to benefit themselves first and only.

He has ruled himself out from dialogue with voreqe who will continue until someone he is comfortable with dialogues and convinces him.

Col Tu Te if you can focus only on putting pressure on the Junta with the objective of returning power back to the people that will be a good sign that you have trully repented. The people of Fiji with the help of the international community will then decide the pathway back to democracy through rebuilding the various Govt mechanisms which at this stage have badly shattered. Honestly,you are not out of the cleaners yet. It's only after you have fronted the people of Fiji through an independent judiciary to answer for your role in supporting the 2006 coup, then, subject to the approval of the people and the court, you MAY have a part to play in rebuilding a better Fiji. I thank you for admitting your poor judgement in 2006 through this media but, it remains to be seen whether those words will still hold true when Voreqe is toppled and the power is given back to the people and the independent judicial process is reconvened. In other words, at this stage you are not qualified yet to start talking about the better Fiji because you were one of them so again please use your position of influence in the army to talk to the boys in green to abandon the fort and capture the Commander.

Thumbs up- I just want to comment on the Junta's speech to the soldier on Friday- It is sad and sickening to read the lies he is informing the soldiers that the economy is flourshing- That is the problem of an uneducated PM who does not understand simple Economics, both at Macro and Micro level- Why bring in the foreign reserve, the Inflation is high- 7%, people are living below poverty line- Ulukau PM who is receiving $745,000 a year does not feel the high cost of living compared to poor ordinary citizen- He is a LIAR LIAR trying to please the soldier when in fact the economy of this country in nosediving and heading towards bankruptcy soon. What a sad day for Fiji if we do not support RUM now.

The way he's talking now, singing like a canary, heaping praises on the restoration of democracy, is a total farce. You should first check on the financial status of the man and the Mara family as a whole.
The Mara family loans from financial institutions such as FDB and Fijian Holdings increased threefold from the period 2006 to 2009, these included the whole Mara siblings and we're talking above six figures here. Rokolui himself manipulated the awarding of tenders in contracts to the RFMF to personal friends and to himself of course, things like supplying medical supplies to the RFMF rugby team from his wife's pharmacy, uniforms and gear from a personal relative's company, etc.
So, in all, Rokolui's sudden departure to his Tongan kin really shows that he is running away from all the financial turbulence hitting the Mara family. The loans are not being paid and he wants a quick solution, that's why he doesn't like the AG Khaiyum because the AG's reform policies have caught out Rokolui and his under the table dealings. Rokolui knows that the road map endorsed by the PM will eventually empower the people and create an even playing field in terms of the politics and economical field. The road map is already in motion and the people understand this by what they see and not by what they hear.
So please get a life and stop commenting on bullshit.

I am a resident of Sydney who has visited Fiji and Tonga many times for a holiday have been reading C4.5 for a long time. It sems to me that we all agree on one point . . that the first coup should never have happened, and you had clever/honest elected leaders (tell us we are dreaming)then Fiji would be among the most prosperous Pacific nations. But reality is what exists now, and that is, it is way past the time when somthing should have been done to rid Fiji of this criminal duo. Put all the humorous and crude comments aside . . the world now sees the Fiji Military as dimwits, easily brainwashed to follow any kind of low life leader taking Fiji into hellish oblivian. Surely there are some remnants of intelligence capable of offering Banana/Taliban a choice of handcuffs or a bullit . . a jail cell or a coffin for the sake of Fiji and all the people . . way past time. Just get these two thieving thugs out of the way of the nations propper democratic rule and prosecute the few who have stolen a country from its people.
Intelligent true patriot soldiers of Fiji . . what are you waiting for.
