Fiji police break up womens retreat claiming it breached PER

The ugly hand of oppression in Fiji has showed itself again with the police yesterday shutting down the 25th birthday of the Fiji’s Women’s Rights Movement’s (FWRM) retreat and planning at the Pearl Resort in Pacific Harbor.

Two staff members were taken in for questioning while another NGO that was holding a strategic planning event at the same venue was not interrupted by the Police.

Sources say the retreat was broken up at about half past 9 yesterday morning when a police officer from the Central Investigation Department asked the hotel event coordinator whether FWRM had a permit. The information was relayed to the FWRM Executive Director, Virisila Buadromo, who informed him the event was an internal FWRM planning meeting.

25 representatives of the FWRM staff, management board and partners were spending three days reflecting on their achievements over 25 years.

But despite assurances from Buadromo the gathering was part of FWRM’s annual internal planning session which didn't need a permit, the police insisted she be taken in for questioning to the Pacific Harbor station.

Sources say the officer kept reiterating FWRM had contravened provisions of the Public Emergency Regulations (PER). When Buadromo agreed to accompany him with a lawyer, he told her a lawyer’s presence would not be needed.

Buadromo held her ground and was accompanied by FWRM lawyer, Roshika Deo, where they were told to wait while “he consulted his superiors.” During that time, Buadromo called several women human rights defenders to inform them of what was happening as well as a human rights lawyer. She was advised by Deo to request that her statement be given in Suva in his presence. The request was denied by the police.

After half an hour of phone calls between the police officer and someone at the Suva CID headquarters, Buadromo and Deo, were informed that charges would not be pressed, the meeting had to be dispersed and that this should be viewed as a “warning.” While waiting at the station, a police officer told Deo “it’s because you are an activist that is why they have brought you in …..to check!”

Buadromo and Deo returned to the Pearl Resort with the police officer to confirm the FWRM planning was shut down. In the last 10 minutes (11.30am Fiji Time), the police have returned stating that a senior intelligence officer from CID HQ was on his way to ask further questions. When inquired whether this was an official investigation, he was hesitant to confirm or deny.

Editor's Note: The latest crackdown on the so-called breaches of the PER comes as dictator Frank Bainimarama and his wife and three children make their way to the Netball World Championships in Singapore. Sources say he'll travel to China as well for a medical check up.

How nice to hear our President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau sing a number during his official tour to Rotuma.
To those of you who watched MAI TV last weekend His Excellency was cool and relaxed as he serenaded officials and guests at the government station at Ahau, accompanied by the Police Jazz Band.

I believe there is still more to come out from you Sir in the future.

Have a nice day Mister President.

  2. Good thing frank cant make it to Rugby World Cup. Butabutako!
But why the FWRM meeting in a luxury hotel when the majority of women in Fiji live below the poverty line and majority of cleaners just made redundant from hospitals are women? FWRM should be more sensitive and include strategies to help these women and stop focusing on UN, international issues etc etc irrelevant / distant issues to those in poverty!

  3. Perhaps Frank will suffer a massive heart attack or stroke while overseas or perhaps we can expect some further arrests in Fiji, given they seem to take place
" only " while he is offshore !

Frank and Aiyaz obviously have a fear of women !

  4. These FWRm staff are drunkards. No role models on how a female should live their life. Don't want my daugther to turn up like any one of them.

  5. My tauvu, Rear Admiral Bainimarama is now just an old man needing frequent medical treatment. No point is the Fiji Government in exile to execute a citizenship arrests..not in the Philippines nor China.

Even if the prodemocracy movement and their influential friends succeeds in detaining the Rear Admiral in any foreign address, he may be of no use as the other Co Prime Minister’s reign of absolute power may just be cemented .

    Either way, my tauvu loses.

When that transition happens, it may just be the advent of an new ball game with new goal post and rules….new political era…
Then the ardent conclusion of the Honkong Uni thesis may just be executed……

    Moce Bainimarama.

  6. Here we go again . . the paranoid illegal, so called "government" revealing just how stupid they are.
If these women did not have any special issues to campaign on, THEY SURE DO NOW!
Once agian the stupidity of a lieing pair of twits is revealing that they are so running scared that they are picking on women in the belief that they can get away with it. Just like Banana bashing women at the QVB.
Don't you think that the power of the womens network of families and friends is something to be feared?
It is a very brave(or rather stupid) man that stands and threatens a group of angry women who are not only smart but socially savvy, and educated people with a social conscience.
    --------------------------------
BUT . . we thank you Banana and Yummybum, for gathering another bag of nails for your own coffin ... thats if any one wants to waste good wood on your burial.

You know the old saying ... "give them enough rope and they will hang themselves" ... they are well on the way to doing just that.

My heart bleeds and cries for the atrocities committed against the people of Fiji by Bainimarama and his goons. wWhy does Bai have to go overseas for medical attention - docotrs in Fiji not good enough or is he too lamu that someone might do away with him? Fiji - Frank and his AG has to go away NOW!

Medical check-up? Shhh...just quietly, it's a penal issue. Heard it was his prostate! Having it shrunk!
Then there's an issue in his larynx / voicebox. They're saying that whatever comes out of his mouth is someone else's thoughts & ideas! Only it's his voice that's heard!
Maybe the scalpel will slip and ' accidently' slice his carotid artery! Just a minor accident -nothing to report!

  26. How much more bullying, intimidation, violence, pressure will our women take before we say "enough is enough". This is unacceptable behaviour!!!

Where is the fairness in requiring FWRM to have a permit for an INTERNAL meeting when another NGO using the same venue did not have a permit and were allowed to continue with their meeting.

Companies, Departments, NGOs, communities, the Army, the Police, families have INTERNAL meetings without a permit. Where is the fairness?

For those of you making moral judgements on FWRM please kindly remember the wise words of Jesus " let him (or her) without any sin, cast the first stone".

Stand strong FWRM! Prove all your critics wrong. Cheers to 25 years and heres to 75 more!!!

    Thumbs up for democracy!

  36. That Frank and his goons should be so worried about an FWRM internal meeting, says much about the cracks in the regimes's apparatus. This is classic behaviour of a police state cum military dictatorship. Paranoia. The FWRM will just reconvene its meeting in a private home in Suva. What is lacking on the part of the military state is intelligence. Not that they ever had it. Aiyaz's smooth talking is surface stuff. Challenge him to a debate and he buckles. FWRM keep up the excellent work that you have been doing for so long. Ignore the idiots who dont understand what you stand for. You will be vindicated one day. You will see.

  37. I am glad to read that even at this Frank site there is general agreement amongst most that time for the chiefs is up. Now let's use this as a starting point to bring back demoracy. Say local elections next year without any nationa political parties. Parties to be formed based on local issue I.e domestic rate payers party vs commerical rate payers party n so on.

  38. Every good things will come to an end. If people cannot imagine them if they were in a PMs shoes what would you do??? FB is taking advantage of the benefits of his position. He has been 'captured by the horn' since before Speight took Chaudery as hostage, now he is thriving on the takings. You can hope for a heart attack, assasin, crach, etc etc - DREAM on!! In our sour minds we hope for the worse - why not make the move and 'GIVE" to the democracy movement. They need support!!! They need money!!! Once they achieve their goals (ten point plan), I am sure we will all be counted in our support. An account has been opened in Australia and NZ, put your money in for the mechanics of the ten point plan to be put in motion. The divident is huge once the new govt come into place.
