New Lau chair resigns after pressure from Bainimarama

The new chair of the Lau Provincial Council, Adi Ateca Ganilau, has been forced to step down on the second day of the meeting after an ultimatum from Frank Bainimarama.

The dictator's ultimatum said “Either remove Adi Ateca Ganilau, nee Mara, as Chairman or the meeting will forced to end immediately”.

Adi Ateca Ganilau was elected Chairman on Tuesday. In a shock result for the dictator, Bainimarama, Adi Ateca received 17 votes, The regime stooge Filipe Bole 15 (pictured above) Roko Josefa Delainauluvatu 6.

A statement from Roko Ului Mara says Adi Ateca stepped down as Chairman to allow the meeting to continue.

"She said on the day before the meeting Leweni was lobbying the members of the council to vote for Bole or the province would not receive any government funds. The members of the council disregarded that and voted me in as Chairman. However, following the ultimatum I felt it was in the best interests of Lau if I step down to allow the meeting to continue. The Interim Government now has no excuse not to deliver on the promises made to Lau by Bainimarama last month.”

Ratu Tevita Mara said “I congratulate my sister Adi Ateca on her victory. However, It is a sad day for Fiji when an elected representative is forced to resign because of a dictator’s blackmail.

“This result showed the people of Lau cannot be bought. The dictator thought he could threaten the members with withdrawing Government financial support for the province. The people of Lau ignored the threats and voted for who they believed had their best interests at heart. The regime responded by removing Adi Ateca.”

“The election of Adi Ateca demonstrates that the people of Fiji can see through the dictator’s lies and broken promises. It shows when the people are allowed to vote they do not vote for Bainimarama or his lackeys. They vote for independence from the regime.”

“Khaiyum announced Fiji would have elections in September 2014. That maybe the case, but here we have a clear example of how this regime acts if they don’t agree with the voters. They use blackmail and threats to get the result they want. I urge all the supporters of the Bainimarama regime to take note. There will be no free and fair elections in 2014. The only chance for a fairly elected Government in Fiji is for regime change.

“The pressure is building on Bainimarama and his puppet master Khaiyum. Pressure is building within Fiji and it is building in the region. I have a meeting in Sydney on Saturday and will then fly on to New Zealand to talk with the pro democracy movement.”

  1. It is sad that poor people are sufferring as a result of power hungry. Both, the Mara family and Bainimarama, are no good leaders for their people. One has to consider why Uluimarama is harping now when he could have done more while he had powers and guns with him to overthrow Bainimarama. These are the people who overthrow Mahendra Chaudhry's elected government for personal greed.

  2. What else is new

Bainimarama sent Malolo to Lakeba 1 week before Bainimarama's proposed arrival with an ENVELOPE full of bribe money

All Vuanirewa's rejected Malolo's proposal to gather at the wharf for a farce welcoming ceremony

In the last hour Malolo handed money to the selected few to carry our the pretend ceremony

Then there was the bribe money from Bainimarama to Malolo to get him to step foot on lakeba

Scouting fiji media in the days after the bogus events and not a beep

    Why ?

  4. I think it's time to tighten Sanctions on Fiji to force the Regime's hand.

If Fijians don't fully comprehend now by this action, that Frank Bainimarama is the puppet of Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum and that the Indigenous institutions and land Ownership is under direct threat from this Demonic, Islamic lead , oppressive Regime, then there is no hope for your children's futures.

When will the poorly educated , thick and just plain bloody stupid soldiers of the RFMF arrest them and wake up ?

  5. Adi Ateca should not have stepped down. It is now or never. She should hold firm and ask the people of Lau to sacrifice. Push the regime. If not her, then who.

  6. Adi Ateca thinks she is doing what is right for the province. Mark my word there is not going to be any service deliveries to Lau. Bainimarama's hallmark is lying. He is a lair. He lies today to get what he needs today.
Tomorrow is a brand new day with its own set of lies to yet achieve what is immediately in front of him. And so the story goes ..

Should not have resigned because something has got to give and this was a golden opportunity to break Bainimarama.

  11. This is the new dictatorship style Fiji. Started by removing the democratically elected government and its been happening in all aspects of Fijian life since from City councils to Provincial councils, its takeover by force. As mentioned by RUM, this is a prelude to what will happen at the 2014 elections if it ever is held...bribery going before the elections than remove by force if the result is not to their liking. The only way is to get rid of these numbskulls like Baini now!

  46. End of dictatorship in Lau.
Distatorship in Lau was kept alive by some tabetabe" people, especialy in the clan. There is no "father to son" or "father to daughter" lineage in Fiji. The ruling mataqali picks who ever is the most suitable to lead. In the old days, it was by the war club, and not the son/daughter depending on dead father's war club. Each contender within the mataqali needs to be a made person to be elegible

He gets what he wants - by hook or by crook.

The international community must see and take note of this.
There will never be any free elctions in Fiji because Bainimarama is there and he will want to protect his Ass from prosecution. Therefore he puts in birds of the same feather.

FIJIANS MUST KNOW THAT FREE ELECTIONS WILL ONLY COME ABOUT IF YOUR DICTATOR IS REMOVED AND MUST BE PROSECUTED UNDER INTERNATIONAL LAWS. FIJI MUST SET THE PRECEDENT FOR ITS YOUNG PEOPLE OTHERWISE IT WILL ONLY BE SEEN AS THE GROOMING LAND FOR FUTURE DICTATORS. SO FIJIANS AWAKE FROM YOUR SLUMBER.

  56. Listen up and listen good Fiji. Both the Mara(s) and Bainimarama are not good for Lau nor Fiji! We need fresh new blood in leadership, not hand me downs from the previous regime(s) of Mara(s), Ganilau(s)and the present Baini(s).....we are going around and aroound the mulberry bush or wilderness not knowing whether we are Arthur or Martha.........and the people voting...well they are equally lost.......the Bose ni Yasana o Lau was a waste of time......voting for leadership is just a meaningless word cos at the end of the day......what bainimarama wanted happened anyway.....so what is new pussycat! Chiefs must not find their leadership in a formal institution as the Bose ni Yasana.....a marama or turaga is chief regardless of being voted into any forum.....so please Mara(s) or whoever chief there is out there....do not seek your recognition by standing for elections in any forum......you are known a chief when people elevate you, not by you standing as a candidate to be voted by people......democracy and theocracy are opposing concepts. Chiefly concepts arose from Kingdom concepts.....there is no democracy in a chiefly or kingdom setting! I am sick and tired of seeing so called chiefs volunteering to be candidates to be voted by a democratic ballet! You cannot have a democratic ballet in a military regime run country anyway, not that I condone the regime! It is just logical that as long as they are in leadership, no democratic event is going to take place.....it is determined by that autocratic ruler! So as for the Bose ni Yasana o Lau or any other bose ni yasana, it is useless voting for a leader.....you leaders are determined by the regime, like or not! That is the reality of the day in Fiji! The only way out is to cut of the head(s)of that regime and that is the only way out now....he is not giving it back that easy......he is there to stay until death do us part! Wake up Lau and every other yasana and the people of Fiji.....the only way out is to take the head(s) out! Even the Lord God ordered Joshua and David to take out the people who occupied their promised land!

We let this pathetic excuse for a human-being dictate our lives because he's got a few guns? I would gladly start a revolution tomorrow if my father hadn't already warned me not to until I finish my degree this year. Point is, I know many people are against this corrupted, tragic, super-retarded government, yet no'ones really doing anything about it, which brings me to the conclusion that we are all so full of crap...

Only an ignorant small-minded pathetic individual like yourself would utter such stupid comments as you've done here. Lau has never claimed nor wishes to be (why should we?) mainland Fiji. But then again, is there any such place as mainland Fiji?

In case you have forgotten, Fiji is made of the land, its resources and its people. All three make Fiji the country. You obviously consider the land and natural resources as the only things of importance here. Yet what use are these without the human resources to turn them into usable commodities? So while we dont claim to be the only noteworthy human resources in our Fiji, people from Lau can never be ashamed of what we have contributed. We have contributed our fair share and then some...

So, stop your childish tantrum and pull your head out of the sand so you can make constructive contribution (other than claiming to be from "mainland Fiji.)

By the way, some of us (Lauans) have made even further contribution through our children ensuring the continuity of your lineage...

  70. july 14, 1.30am....there's nothing to be so angry about....the people of Lau had spoken ....the members approved of Ateca...but they rejected her ideology....what's the problem with that....come on...try to face the facts...the problem is that your mind is hell bent in trying to belittle this Govt and what it has archived in the development within Fiji...
Try to be realistic with whats happening around you....
    GOD BLESS FIJI

  72. If Adi Ateca was a wise person she would have not gone thru this faked up process. She knew well in advance of her election what she was going to say! She had the choice after her elections to go ahead & say it or not to. She decided to say it even thought she knew that the funding for all the Provicial Councils in Fiji was from Govt! So why did she do what she did-simply to to get back at Govt as she had a platform to do it from. remember her husband getting booted out from Govt-this is revenge time and she had an opportunity to get back at them! The consequences of her actions had placed the Council in an awkard position -didn't she care not really? There is a much bigger game plan being played out here than meets the eye-hopefully the ordinary people of Lau don't suffer for this single mindedness. She never really had the Yasana in her heart if she did ask her how she treated the people of Nayau.(after the passing away of late Tui Nayua)! Na Kawa ni Qase nei Tui Nayau are still around when you belittle them you pay a price for it!
