Former Fiji lawyer gets top job at human rights organisation

Fiji's former Law Society President, Graham Leung, has been appointed Director for the Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers within the International Commission of Jurist (ICJ).

Leung has been vocal against the regime and had called on the judiciary to oppose the regime's Legal Practitioner's Decree in 2007.

He did not seek registration under the decree, which required all lawyers to register with the regime in order to get their  licences.

The role of the Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers  is to safeguard the independence and bolster the effectiveness of judges and lawyers in the administration of justice, particularly for the advancement of human rights.

The International Commission of Jurists is dedicated to the primacy, coherence and implementation of international law and principles that advance human rights.

Graham Leung appointed director CIJL

  2. Good on you Graham. Congratulations!
Do not forget the abuse of Human Rights going on in Fiji.
-People are not allowed to vote.
-The Media is censored so that people cannot say what they want.
-Now Aiyaz and Bainimarama have busted the Unions and brought in new PER's inorder to further oppress the people.
-Their greed knows no end as they continously rip off the Fijian people in various ways including establishing the Land bank and taking Kickbacs from investors.
-As these two steal millions of dollars, the common people suffer with even higher costs of living, lower standarads of living and deteriorating health care.
-The villagers have no idea that Bai is slowly tightening the noose.
-Please Graham tell the International Community that these two are failures and are corrupt. They are trying and show that all is well when it isn't.
The Fijian people are suffering in silence being effectively muzzled by the corrupt Fijian Army and their leaders.
The recent round of increase in fuel costs will push more people into poverty. More crime and more sexual assaults.

    Do what you can Graham.
Continue to make a stand for what is Right
And may God continue to bless you.
    I'm praying for you.

    -Valataka na Dina.

  8. Graham is a principled individual, probably the most principled lawyer Fiji has ever known. His refusal to sign up to the illegal practitioner's decree 2007 shows he has real ethics in the face of oppression. All legal practitioners in Fiji who signed the illegal junta's registration to remain in practice have had their ethics compromised. They no longer have credibility, dutifully following an illegal regime adhering to its repugnant illegality. Graham must bring this to the attention of the international courts.

  9. @Anon 12:11 PM. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Not leaves (professions), or appearance, are the proper tests of the life that is in the tree, but the fruit it bears. We are to test men and every institution by this principle.

By this principle alone, Baini and Aiarse are one of the DUMBEST persons ever to set foot on Fijian soil.

Have you had a chance to read his infamous SUNSET THESIS for the Fijian race? Possibly the DUMBEST THESIS EVER WRITTEN. Not even secondary grade stuff.

Graham you're a shinning example to these illegal thugs like Aiyaz, Naz Shameem, Frank, Pryde, Gates, Pathik, and many more.

Boy oh Boy that is a very powerful position. Fiji is proud of you GEL for your prnciple stand against these thugs.

You have been appointed to that high office - great achievement taciqu. Lesson to be learnt...these illegal regime is hell bent on destroying Fiji's intellctual capital. Intenational is gaining them.

    Big loss Fiji.

Compare Aiyaz and GEL.....no where near.

Aiyaz is a flyweight.... when it comes to ranking.

  20. Very well deserved Graham, no compromise, no surrender to this illegal and illegitimate regime. The real lawyers make it BIG, the false ones make COUPSs and they remain in coup coup land forever.
Kua ni guilecavi Viti bro. I constantly dream of a Fiji where people like you, Imrana, Rt Joni could be at the helm, but anyhow, Fiji is too small for you right now! In time!

  24. Well done Everett. One of two persons in the legal fraternity of Fiji that have shown a stand of Principle. Shame others like the AG and the Cinderella Sisters don't have it in them to do likewise

Keep up the good work. There is an end insight, RJ you will have to eventually come home to answer the call. Time will show you when it's right

    Vinaka to both of you

  25. Bula vinaka Mr. Leung and congratulations to yr achievement, it is indeed an honor for such a honest and professional person like you to hold such a very high position - it speaks volume of yourself as a TRUE and a humble Fijian...I still remember yr speech that was never made public in June 2009, which really touches my heart with great sorrow and sadness...

"We cannot shirk them. We must tell our leaders to stop the bickering and the rancour. We are weary of division and polemic. Our spirit is wounded and our souls yearn for real leaders of humility and integrity who will take us to the promised land. We must be careful of false prophets in our midst. Leaders who divide and conquer must be rejected. We do not need them. They pretend to pray at the alter of high principle but instead feed from the trough of self interest and hypocrisy. . .To stand up and be counted....MY SON ASKED ME DAD WHY DO YOU HAVE TEARS IN YR EYES...I TOLD HIM SON THIS PARTICULAR SPEECH BY THIS CHINO-FIJIAN MAN TOUCHES MY HEART INDEED...WE MUST ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH SON EVEN IF IT MEANS SLAYING BY THE SWORD OF OUR EVIL LEADERS.....GOD WILL ALWAYS UPHOLD THE TRUTH SON NO MATTER WHAT...HIS TIME WILL COME...GOD BLESS FIJI...

  26. Thank you Graham for making the legal fraternity proud there are very few people of your calibre and quality left in Fiji the two sisters should be ashmed of themselves for bringing disrepute to the noble profession. It must be burning like the bongo chilli.
Wish you all the best and good luck.
