International Union mounts massive campaign against Bainimarama regime

Sharan Burrow
The International Trade Union Confederation is investigating if legal action can be taken against the military dictatorship for failing to adhere to the principles and rights of the International Labour Organisation.

As a member of the ILO, the Fiji regime has a commitment, through the 1998 ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, to respect, promote and realise the fundamental rights set out in the organisation’s core conventions.

Moves to limit fundamental workers’ rights in Fiji are also at odds with commitments made under the Cotonou Agreement which defines the European Union’s relations with 79 countries from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, including Fiji.

The General Secretary of the ITUC, Sharan Burrow, told Coupfourpointfive yesterday the Essential National Industries Employment Decree is a severe blow to workers rights.

"We think that the decree is an affront to the fundamental principles and rights to which Fiji is required to adhere to as a member of the ILO.

"The decree, in many important Fijian industries, essentially eliminates the right of freedom of association, collective bargaining and to strike," she said.

Ms Burrow said the ITUC has taken a number of actions to stand up for the workers of Fiji.

"We called upon the prime minister directly to repeal the law, filed a memo on the law with the ILO and, on the basis of that law and the arrests, and was able to mobilize and ILO delegation to Fiji.

"We are also coordinating an international campaign against the government of Fiji which has as its aim the restoration of fundamental rights in Fiji, including repeal of that and other recent decrees."

Ms Burrow said the ITUC is activating all of the ILO mechanisms it can to put pressure on the regime.

"We are also seeking to generate substantial political and economic pressure on the regime to reverse course and restore basic rights, including labor rights.  We are also investigating to find other points of leverage using domestic and international law."

  1. Much better response from the ITUC and the Union body's. This is what we need to see, what concrete steps are being taken and what further actions can be activated against this illegal regime. I hope they see this through and don't give up like so many organisations in Fiji have done.

  8. Go for it Ms Burrows and ITUC - good on you!! At long last!! We the Fijians had thought we had NO friends.
It took the International Community, AND OUR SO CALLED FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS FIVE long and agonizing years to hear our cries - 'CRY AND BLEED THE BELOVED COUNTRY'.
We the right thinking people of this country have been on the receiving end of things here - it is high time they now be on the receiving end. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!
Critics have labelled Rabuka and Qarase as being racist - what would critics say about all this nonsense - when the whole aim of the coup was 'SELF-PRESERVATION' for the so called PM!!!!. I know, I was there!!!!

I am just wondering how a person like aiyaz sayed khaiyum can look Fiji straight in the eye and now is looking at the world straight in the eye and lie about what are happening in Fiji.

While the world is fully aware of what are happening in Fiji, he seems to think that he can hoodwink these ILO management officials by trying to cover up all he has been doing mostly without Bainimarama's endorsement.

ASK has been having it his own way all this time being the No. 1 Puppet of the Puppeteer, NASHAT SHAMEEM...Yes, Nashat Shameem is the Puppeteer.

She is the one who has been manipulating the whole scenarios of this Illegal Fiji Government.

Nashat Shameem's schemes have led to the many decrees we now have; the economic changes for the worst we are facing, the victimization, the hiking costs of living, and whatever you can think of.

YES, NASHAT SHAMEEM IS THE CONCEIVER, PLANNER, MANIPULATOR, ADVISER, COUNSELER, ETC TO JVB THROUGH AZK. Now AZK has taken things into his own hands just to please his cousin Shameem, not JVB who is just the figurehead. Nashat with a twist of her fingers, gets things done through AZK and JVB by JVB military goons.

THE MESSAGE TO THE WHOLE WORLD IS NASHAT SHAMEEM IS THE NO. 1 IN FIJI AT THE MOMENT; THEN AZK AND FINALLY JVB COMING A DISTANT THIRD IN THE LINE OF COMMAND THOUGH HE IS PM, BUT A FIGURE-HEAD.

JVB is not capable of making his own decisions...THE ILLEGITIMATE ISMHAEL OF THE BIBLE IS STILL TAKING HIS REVENGE ON THE DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM........

JVB AND HIS MILITARY GOONS ARE JUST TOOLS TO BE USED FOR THE MUSLIM CAUSE; MY APOLOGIES TO ALL LAW ABIDING MUSLIMS IN FIJI...IT'S TIME THAT EVERY MUSLIM IN FIJI DECLARE HIS OR HER INTEREST...WHETHER THEY APPROVE AND SUPPORT THE HIDEOUS WORK OF NASHAT SHAMEEM, AZK AND THOSE MUSLIMS WHO ARE CLOSE TO THEM

FIJI CHRISTIANS BEWARE OF WHAT ARE DEVELOPING IN FIJI...YOUR LANDS AND NATURAL RESOURCES ARE BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.

TO GET THESE RIGHTS AND RESOURCES BACK, DEMOCRACY HAS TO BE BROUGHT BACK AND THE FIJI MILITARY HAS TO GO FOR GOOD. THE ILO HAS TO PUT IN PLACE THE MECHANISM FOR THE DISSOLUTION OF THR FIJI MILITARY FOREVER.

ALL SOLDIERS IN THE FIJI MILITARY NOW ARE TO BE TAKEN TO TASK FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THIS ILLEGAL GOVERNMENT.

THE ILO THROUGH THE UNITED NATIONS ARE TO SEND IN MULTINATIONAL FORCES TO TAKE OVER THE COUNTRY.

ALL WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ATROCITIES AND UNFORTUNATE SITUATIONS THE PEOPLE OF FIJI ARE IN ARE TO BE ARRESTED AND CHARGED AS CRIMINALS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE...

MOST OF THE 800,000 PLUS PEOPLE IN FIJI ARE WITNESSES TO THEIR ATROCITIES...

I REALLY WOULD LIKE THEM TO BE ARRESTED AND REMOVED FROM OUR MIDST........

  11. I could see the illegal regime would be so defiant and rebellious, they will not give in to ITUC or ILO, nor will they listen to heed at least to another pack of good advice. They will stick to their so called rules of engagement and their guns. Typical Military Dictators, full of corruptions, nepotism, stupidity, (sivia na ulukau kei na bavulu sese).

For us Blogger and all Freedom Fighters, we should press on for a complete halt of everything.

For those who are thinking of what and what, please let us join our brotherhood and sisterhood who had lost employments, family members, dignity, property, assets, personal-granta, citizenship, the love and joy, etc, etc, because of this illegal regime and 2006 coup. We all stand, struggle and fight together, we will succeed.

We are fighting the illegal military juntas, so, if your neighbor is a military personal currently serving means he is your enemy, prepare against him. Whether you like or not, all people working in Fiji....... the axe is being sharpened at your side will take you out.
