|Mataca with John Samy and Bainimarama|
The Catholic Church has supported the People's Charter from the start with Archbishop Petero Mataca even co-chairing the National Council for Building a Better Fiji along with the illegal leader, Frank Bainimarama.
The controversial Charter (the supposed way forward for Bainimarama's 'new Fiji') has been widely rejected but Mataca has continued to promote it, and Bainimarama.
The pro-democracy campaign is now calling on the Catholic Church to show political nous and unite with the country's biggest church, the Methodist Church, against the regime.
Roko Ului Mara has released a statement saying: "Now is the hour to support the Methodist Church against the tyranny and evil of the Fiji military junta. What the evil military junta is doing to the Methodist Church and to Fiji is not right and we can not just stand aside and watch. Please lend your support to the Methodist Church and withdraw your support for the Peoples Charter."
In another statement titled "Another Dictator Falls," Mara has also hailed the people of Libya for ousting Colonel Muammar Gaddafi saying: "The oppressed and long-suffering people of Fiji are also taking a stand against Bainimarama’s evil, corrupt and brutal regime. They will no longer “turn the other cheek!”
"VRF have also started their campaign to remove the illegal military junta and to return freedom, democracy and the rule of law to Fiji. Lend your support.
"Stand up and denounce the oppressive and illegal military junta led by the murdering power mad Bainimarama and Khaiyum. Support the Methodist Church. Start civil resistance now. Go on leave, distribute confidential documents and ignore orders or lend your support however you can.
"Together, like the brave and valiant people of Libya, we will remove, in the very near future, the tyrant Bainimarama and his evil, corrupt and brutal regime. And together, we will rebuild Fiji."
