World Council of Churches: Bainimarama regime should not be interfering in Methodist affairs

Rev. Dr Olav Fykse says regime should back off.

Growing support for the plight of Fiji's Methodist Church with the World Council of Churches now denouncing the regime's interference.

The Council is made up of 349 churches worldwide with about 550 million Christians and says it is concerned about the blatant violation of freedom of religion by Frank Bainimarama's unelected government.

The general secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, says the military dicatorship should not be interfering in internal church decisions and affairs.

"This is the third year in a row that the government has cancelled the Methodist annual conference," he said. "Authorities have also suspended the national constitution, restricted media freedom and detained other opponents."

Tveit is currently in Samoa for the 50th anniversary of the Pacific Conference of Churches and a meeting of Pacific church leaders.

The general secretary of the Methodist Church of Samoa, Rev. Vaiao Eteuati (pictured left), has also called on the global church to put pressure on the regime against what he calls 'unjust actions' towards the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma.

While other denominations in Fiji have been allowed to hold conferences and meet without restrictions, Fiji's unelected government cancelled the Methodist Church's three-day annual conference and has stipulated it meet only for Sunday services, Friday night youth fellowship, womens fellowship and cell and group fellowships.

Coupfourpointfive obtained the following leaked documents which shows Mosese Tikoitoga signed off on the ruling on behalf of the Military Council and that the documents were marked:"ensure this is monitored."
See earlier story for more information.

Editor's Note: Coming up - what happened to the Sunbeam bus that caught fire yesterday in Nadi?

Can you imagine Bainibananas and his chubby little chieftain signing off their latest idiotic edict: The Methodist church must ‘cease effectively’ the following gatherings: “No bazaars, no fundraising, no camping, no rally, no open air and no sports days”. Wow ... now the army can sleep without fear – while the world giggles at the goons who have to write this sort of stuff to protect their regime. Meanwhile, Wadan Narsey’s reminder to other churches “Hindus, Catholics, Anglicans, Muslims and even Indo-Fijian Methodists” is more proof of his astute targetting of the frauds and hypocrites who stay silent across the land, on bended knee baying impotently to a greater authority. What about some national strikes; what about some national boycotts, including sports events; what about schools locking up for a day or two? A once majestic Fiji is shriveling to a stinking empty shell.

Good piece of writing by 6.29 pm.
Oh how much better baini and arse must feel now that the Methodists are feeling much more angry and frustrated - prevented from doing their good work. Are the soldiers relaxed now?(sarcastic question)
7.12pm - Has polished his crystal ball to be a sort of a phsycic to see into the future like that. But then he did see two police posts burnt down, and the hot coals went to waste.
The next time there is a decent size fire, try to have a fat pig (or preferably two), ready to be roasted. The people are definately hungry and getting hungrier by the day.

mosese tikoitoga n bainimarama will pay heavily for these, themselves and their generations to come, mark my words.

I love my Methodist Church and support the current leadership even if no meeting for the next 10years. God always work in a mysterious way and we will see who will last the journey, Tikoitoga/Bainimarama or the Methodist Church of Fiji.

@ Tikoitoga – Your reasoning for the prohibition of Church Meetings is completely stupid, just show the mentality and devilish type you are. Remember the law that one remain innocent until proven guilty, so, whatever charges if any against any Church Leader will have to be proven guilty first in a court of law before your stinky mouth starts singing. Just leave the Methodist Church alone and you Military try finish your cleanup campaign that had completely gone felonious and crooked and outlaw.

"VENGEANCE IS MINE SAYS THE LORD". I feel sorry for this illegal regime and Tikoitoga for what they have done to challenge GOD and take over his authority to enforce their worldly desire on God's people in the Methodist church. Yes, remember the Words at the top. Only GOD has the right and authority to bring justice on His own people and that includes you membesr of this illegal reime. Bainimarama/Tikoitoga/Ayiase/Shameems and all their supporters, your iniquities will visit you to the third and fourth generation and by then you will have no more descendants in this world.
Take heed. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

why isnt the Pacific Council of Churches sayin anything about the plight of the methodist church? is it because the Secretary General Rev. Apimeleki Qilio is the father of Sitiveni Qilio one of FB's croonies and sits and makes decisions on the military council? Food for thought

Why is the decision by the Interim Regime about Methodist church meetings promulgated in the name of the Military Council? Where is their power written in any law, even the illegal laws of the Bainikhaiyum regime? The PER does not mention the Military Council. Why is the decision written in Fijian? Is this the official language the military, or just the language that happens to be the mother tongue of 99.9 percent of its members? This shows what a charade this race free Fiji is.
