Fiji rugby chair: 'the buck stops with us'

TIKOITOGA: Accepting blame for Fiji's shocker World Cup performance

Mosese Tikoitoga has taken full responsibility for the Flying Fijian's miserable performance at the Rugby World Cup but insists his board had no say in naming the team.

Angry fans and bloggers have criticised players and coaches but have also singled out the military appointed Tikoitoga for Fiji's disastrous Cup campaign.

FBC says "even though the current board came in after the coaching panel and the team had been chosen, the FRU chairman says he now needs to make some tough decisions."

He is quoted as saying: "As chairman of the board I take full responsibility for what has happened. The buck stops with us. We've heard all the comments and criticism and we accept everything that's being said."

Fiji Police Jazz band playing before the game

Tikoitoga is part of the Nadi welcome home committee for the Flying Fijians and told FBC the team will be accorded a welcome ceremony be-fitting of any team to represent Fiji at the World Cup.

Disappointed fans were baying for blood after Fiji was beaten 27-7 by Samoa but the team's fortunes worsened yesterday when it was thrashed 66-nil by Wales.

Many fans have put the shoddy Cup performance down to the general woes of the country since Frank Bainimarama took control after a coup in December.

The unelected government says it pumped $3 million dollars in the World Cup campaign.

Earlier, FBC quoted FRU member and Comissioner Western Colonel Joeli Cawaki as saying changes will be made when the team arrives home.

Cawaki says the board will meet on Thursday adding it came into power when the team was already chosen, and could not do much but help with preparations required.

BLOODY EFFORT: Fiji at the hands of Wales yesterday.

The matter rests with the selectors, coaching panel and other managements. I request you Colonel to do what we the rugby loving people wants to see....sacking and booting...cut pay ... all under non performance and causing a disgrace to our nation.
I will keep watching the Samoans and the Tongans....gutsy players ...playing for pride and not money.

What about the 2007 RWC, when the team made it to the quarters ?

Bainimarama was still and almost a year in power through his coup then !

History repeating itself, except Fiji lost.

I don't think the Fijian Team lost anything, they played their best under the circumstances while Frank and Co. plundered their Treasury and destroyed their Government , Cultural and Tradional Institutions.

Where there is ROT, there will be ROT....

The poor performance by our Flying Fijians is the result of the Fiji Military Government interventions to the FRU, Board, and selections.

Mo and Frank & Co should step aside for Fiji's future.

During the last month, many of the Fijian players have had drinks with the Australian team, including the Fijian born Wallabies.

It is reported that a number of the Fijians expressed disappointment at the take over of the FRU by the military and the $3 million blackmail offer for clubs to appoint military officers or no money.

They also said that they were dismayed in their preparation to hear Tikoitoga threatening to boycott the RWC. They said it was hard to train not knowing if the team was going. Negative comments from bananasinpyjamas also didn't help.

It must have been hard for the team to play their best when the rest of the world equated them to a failed military dictatorship.

That was the value of being in a free country; the players could speak freely to others about the human rights abuses in Fiji. It won't be the same now that they are back in Fiji and once again existing under a dicktatorship.

The problem is the military wants to have its finger in every pie.
Instead of being King Midas with the golden touch, now they have the shit touch.
That is everything they touch turns to shit.
Here is the solution:
Vuaka, give the country back to the people.
All you ar**holes that started the coup all go to jail.
(Be a man and face up to the truth)
Leave FRU to function under its own constitution.
Only then will things work out.
As long as the army continue to manipulate the system , Fiji Rugby will stay at the bottom of the shit pile.

@ mark manning (in black print, Oct 3, 2.42p.m.)

You're delusional if you think that you can redeem Bainimarama's coup on Dec 5, 2006 on the basis of Fiji's sterling performance at the RWC 2007. Please try grasping at another loose straw..

FYI, our boys were already in full flight given their preparation months before the coup. They were all geared up, training hard, were well supported and in high spirits - all despite of the threats of and eventual takeover of the people's government by Bainimarama and his advisors.

At the RWC 2007, our boys played for the PEOPLE of Fiji, not the low-lifers that had crashed and have been cashing in at the people's treasury ever since Dec 2006.

What's more, we still had the RULE OF LAW intact in 2007 despite the shysters' shenanigans within the judiciary, doing their utmost best to compromise the Constitution (Gates, Shameem sisters, Byrne, Aiyaz et al).

The ruling of the Fiji Court of Appeal in 2009 had clearly shown the junta a way out of the mess they had created for the country...

The rest is now history as these pretentious and proud LOSERS were blinded by their lust for power and control over a military force that could do their bidding without question. Ah! and all for the love of money and power. Absolute Power Absolutely Corrupts.

I agree that this guys who call themselves as the flying Fijians should be facing the public when they collect their $30,000.00 pay out and the Coaches who will be receiving their final payments of $5,000.00 per week package. The media should follow them when pay day comes around - I want to see what they look like when receiving the money that a lot of Fiji people do not even get in a year - but working hard everyday (365 days per annum) to send children to school and keep a balanced meal three times a day for their family. Now the question is how much was the manager getting as he is a good friend of the pig.

Those unions which opposed the development of a high performance unit in Denarau need to take some responsibility.

There were plans to build world-class training/playing facilities and grounds and a hotel there which would have made Fiji an attractive venue to host international matches.

The HPU was being talked about in 2005. It's 2011 now and nothing's been done.

They can't put aside their differences for the sake of the national team. Nadi would have been the perfect location for the HPU - close to the airport, good weather, lots of touristy things for visiting teams to do, world-class golf courses, scope for expansion etc.

But no, why should Nadi get all the facilities?

It isn't about Nadi. It's about what will benefit Fiji rugby most.

Now if Suva offered the best location, by all means build it in Suva. But it doesn't.

Tough decisions will be made on Thursday by the board of the Fiji Rugby Union after the Fiji 15s team’s disappointing performance in this year’s Rugby World Cup.

There are indications that some of the coaches involved on the coaching panel will go as questions continue to be raised on the team’s lackluster performance.

A 19 member official team went with the 30 member Fiji team to NZ.

The coaching panel for Fiji in this Rugby World Cup was made up of eight people.

This included Samu Domoni Junior as coach, Shannon Fraser as backline coach, Greg Mumm as forwards coach, Naca Cawanibuka as Head Strength and Conditioning coach, Michael Foely as scrum coach, Mosese Rauluni as halfback coach, David Dwyer as Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach and Reverend Joji Rinakama as Assistant Forwards coach.

The remaining official team included a psychologist, a video analyst, two physiotherapists, a Manager, Logistics Manager, Administrator, Assistant Manager and a Media Manager.

Many people have said that the team performed the way it did because they have been trained out of playing Fijian rugby.

The coaching panel, not only Domoni are expected to be held accountable.

Fiji Rugby Union Chairman Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga who received a part of the team that arrived in Nadi from NZ earlier today, said he has thanked the players for playing for Fiji but he said the FRU will now make the decision which is best for Fiji rugby.

There is an audio file attached to this story. Please login to listen.

After the traditional Fijian welcome ceremony for the team in Nadi this afternoon, Colonel Tikoitoga said he made the FRU’s stand clear, and the board will also speak to the coaches and players on what went wrong in NZ.

There is an audio file attached to this story. Please login to listen.

Colonel Tikoitoga said the whole build-up to the RWC will be assessed.

There is an audio file attached to this story. Please login to listen.

The Government provided $3 million towards the team’s preparation and participation at the 2011 RWC.

Meanwhile Former All Black and Fiji’s 1999 Rugby World Cup coach, Brad Johnstone said he is ready to assist in moving Fiji rugby forward after our disappointing performance in this World Cup.

When asked by Fijivillage on whether he is ready to assist Fiji rugby, Johnstone who now runs a resort in Nadi said he is always willing to help.

There is an audio file attached to this story. Please login to listen.

Johnstone said a lot of issues need to be seriously considered and the Fiji 15s team’s performance in this World Cup just proves what has been happening at the FRU for about three years.

It would be equally surprising and revealing whether bloggers in this esteemed column have their names on the Rugby lottery butts, attended pre RWC FRU fundraising events,or paid sub to their local Unions, attended family farewell in honor of players pre RWC.

Or are we all just wanna be rugby gurus and life experts who love to coach from the sideline of rugby and shout nothingness from the sidelines of life.

all these people are to ready the team, under direction of coach, and then they should be left behind, and the coach and captian are in the arena.

play , playtime, let the wings take your heels and play.........fark all the rest

i thought the coach is the phycogolgist....he is the leader, and the leader, if he is ever to be winner must be a phyc man, or forget it.

when the chips are down....the players look only to one man, the coach, the capatain and each other

all the rest are to assist the coach, not the team.....there can only be one leader bar none.

Do Tikoitoga and his board have the necessary skills and experience to provide effective vision and successful strategies for rugby in Fiji? There is a biblical saying that, “when leaders have no vision, the people perish”

Running a rugby team is like running a business where there are the board and hired management team. When floor workers fail miserably in their performance outputs then responsibility is placed on the manager and the board. I say this because the Fiji team manager, Bosco Tikoisuva needs to provide an explanation on what went wrong with team performance and Tikoitoga should explain what went wrong with the management. After all, a team’s performance on field is symptomatic of the problems occurring off field and the buck stops at the top.

The FRU board and management have a legal and ethical responsible to their shareholders (rugby fraternity) and the public at large. A proper board and organisational structure ensures good guidance, provision of adequate resources and effective monitoring of all the activities of management to solicit the maximum performance outputs. In the FRU’s case, Tikoitoga and the board members are unelected because they do not have the mandate to represent the FRU. Their board structure is illegal and therefore these fundamental flaws have a trickledown effect that corrupts all areas of the organisation which is then ultimately reflected by the poor rugby team performances on field.

Rugby players like business employees, soldiers and ordinary citizens must be led by a leader who not only has a clear moral compass but the ability to inspire and motivate by example.Leadership by example means doing the right thing for those you represent.

The GFC was created by corrupt corporate boards and management which saw public confidence in investments suffer. Voreqe and Tikoitoga should step down from their immoral perch and give the FRU, the military and the government back to the people and to the rule of law. It is only then that rugby players, business, soldiers and the people of Fiji will regain confidence to invest their full potential for the country.

People are crying now but the damage was done way back then, when Gavoka and Dakuidreketi, who between them tried their best to destroy FRU, hired Sam Domoni. From Day One these two antognists ran the FRU as it was their personal empire with their own selfish agendas rearing its ugly head at every turn and switch.

When you have two idiots who have never played rugby in any significant form or manner you are bound to screw to big time. And screw up they did by hiring Domoni despite knowing (Oh! they wouldn't know since they never played).

The boys were given a coach who was totally out of his depth. And our boys knows when a "fake: is at hand trying to weave his bullshit. The accent from Oz and Kiwi is a dead give-away.

There is no problem with the Board and the accusation from convicted felon and murderer Francis Kean is uncalled for and is just typical grand-standing on his part.

The structure is OK, just get a new coach and please............... do not bring in any former coaches. They had they shot and could not deliver the goods, so what has changed ($$$$).

@ Vanua.

The money was provided by the IRB. There was funding and plans had already been drawn up but the unions could not agree on Nadi as the location.

Instead they divvied up the money and all foresight vanished.

See www.theterraces.com.fj/library/Documents/gtmasterplan.pdf for Denarau International Rugby Stadium, Rugby HPU, training ground and accommodation.

Imagine if FRU had the fortitude to have gone ahead.

International teams touring Australia and NZ would be using Nadi as a stopover point to and from their tours, tourists on their way to and from the RWC in NZ would have come to Fiji, international teams would be more willing to play Test matches in Fiji.

Let's forget 2011, give the boys their dues and let's prepare for 2015 with a new Coach. But we need to start tomorrow if we are to have any decent shot at qualifying and competing in 2015.

@ Forest & Tree's.

Although long term - concept (vision)valid - Viti (Nadi) would provide missing link in international telecast template. All about suitable TV content - multi purpose venues (stadium)in which this can be achieved.
Eg: Same (obviously bigger)vision -different local -Suncorp Bris - telecasters nirvana. Don't know know current IRB mentality re such matters - but do know another successful code (AFL)is run by an independant Comm who's sole objective is promotion & expansion of their game.

Ilivasi Tabua was unfairly dismissed which was proven by the court of arbitration in which he won his case. When Ilivasi he was unfairly dismissed by the FRU he was replaced by Samu Domoni who belongs to the New Methodist denomination. During the time of his appointment the than CP and staunch/senior New Methodist Esala Teleni was in the FRU board.....with Keni Dakuidreketi under investigation by the police how else can he resist the recommendation by the CP and New Methodist pastor to replace Ilivasi Tabua with Sam Domoni.....sa ra sota ga!

Hey guys - breaking news !!

VOREQE AND TIKOITOGA ARE FINALISING ARRANGEMENT FOR A BILLION DOLLAR LOAN TO UPGRADE FIJI RUGBY.

What about gona?

@ Vanua

It wasn't the international unions which couldn't agree on Nadi, it was the provincial unions in Fiji.

Na yalo ga ni veiqati.

They could not look at the bigger picture, ie, the benefits it would bring to Fiji rugby as a whole.

Methinks it was the petty jealousy over basing it in Nadi and not Suva etc.

And no, I am not from Nadi and either way, I would have had nothing to gain or lose from the decision. I'm not even from the West. I'm an easterner from the other side of Viti Levu who happens to be a rugby fan.

@ Peni Caucau

Bro, the poor performance of the Boys in WRC2011 should be blamed to Bainimarama and his military council who had brought all these disrepute, misery and disgrace to Fiji and had spreaded all over with its domino effects. Both Netball and FRugby have dropped so low in ratings of all times. Me, as a blogger, I had suggested long time ago not to send our rugby team to WRC2011 because it would be the greatest disgrace of all WRCups that our team would receive.

Why???? You are asking WHY???? Not So???? Turukawa had said it correctly............in Fijian...... NA IKA NI SA BONA MAI ULUNA.............Everything else ROTS like SHIT (Big Time!!). I tell you something, I don't f'care who you are........Fiji will never succeed in anything at all and again if a criminal, a murder, a thief like Bainimarara & Co are running our beloved country.

Anyway, let us congratulate the Boys what small things they had achieved in WRC2011......... Until next WRC.....Bon Voyage!!!

Domoni hasn't showed us his qualifications yet-as for getting all the lossers from NSW rugby-how dopy can we get-but then we should not be suprised Domoni stopped the cibi on the England tour and they had Bible classes during the evening and morning. The cibi was considered to be from the dark ages-when we were cannibles-yet we never won a game of on the England tour. May be it would have been better if they ran on to the ground with their Bibles-to scare the foreign devils (opposing temas) that night have worked and Domoni would be classified as Miracle worker?
