Fiji regime stops Aussie-Kiwi delegation at airport

(talk about it in our chat room or comment below)

The Australian Council of Trade Unions and its New Zealand counterpart, the Council of Trade Unions, have been sent home on the same flight they arrived on.

The five-member delegation landed at Nadi airport at two o'clock but was not allowed through Immigration. Their passports and phones were confiscated.

Sources told Coupfourpointfive the Virgin Blue Flight is preparing to take off about now, after a two-hour delay because of the incident.

The ACTU leader, Ged Kearney and the CTU president, Helen Kelly, confirmed this morning they were going ahead with a planned three-day visit, despite Fiji media reports warning they would not be allowed in.

The illegal attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, claims the mission has prejduged Fiji so there is no point in them being allowed in to investigate allegations of labour and human rights abuse.

Kelly told New Zealand media this morning they would head to Suva regardless of the threats.

Kearney had tweeted the following message: About to board plane to Fiji. Intend to talk workers, employers and church groups about rights abuses. Govt threatening to refuse us entry!

The regime was quick to publicise its decision to refuse to let the delegation into the country.

Both the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation and Fiji Live were primed to report the incident with Khaiyum confirming to them the delegation had been sent home because it "wasn't welcome in the country because of their lack of integrity and credibility and their pre-conceived ideas about Fiji.'"

He told them: “They did board the plane, the plane did arrive in Fiji, but they have now been put back on the plane that’s going to return to Australia and they are about to board the plane to go back to where-ever they came from."

He added: "Everybody knows that the Bainimarama is supportive of improving the lives of all Fijians, is supporting the policy and program of creating more, of sustaining jobs."

Khaiyum also attacked FTUC leaders Daniel Urai and Felix Anthony for being at the airport to meet the New Zealand and Australian unionists.

He claimed they and "and some of their other mates who seem to be in the background are only here to create a circus, they (are) only here to disrupt things."

  10. Shame on you Bainimarama and Khaiyum for disallowing the NZ and Australian Union Leaders from entering Fiji to investigate abuses of human rights and workers rights. What happened to transparency and fairplay that you boast about in your Charter? Some things not right here Bai and Aiyaz. What are you hiding? Kenneth Zinck

  11. That was Fiji's chance to prove them wrong and remove our name from the blacklist! Common-sense should have prevailed and ASK should have been more tactful in his approach! What is there to hide! You know truth hurts and we should not blame anyone for the suffering we will face but ourselves! Jesus, please guide our leaders and steer our country away from doom! Amen

  14. You idiots who supported this deportation are simply assholes. The workers rights in Fiji have been suppressed by the goons running the country.

Hope the members of your families will suffer.

  16. To the white goons, don't tell us what to do we know how to handle our situations. This is a long journey and we will just wait and see how far this military dumb groups continue. They now realize the problems they've create but how to get out of it is beyond their thick head. Poor Fijians are suffering and silently crying which will erupt in a short awhile.

  18. They ask the Unions to do their own investigation, then refuse to allow them to do the investigation - hypocrisy Aiyaz - both you and Frank are trying to hide the truth from the world.

But it won't work. We all know that what you are doing to Fiji is criminal and all traitors will have to face the music one day.

  19. Workers of Fiji alone can grind the country to a standstill....but who will feed them ? Rabuka was also tested by the cane farmers back in the old days and he tried to use soldiers to cut cane. But they did make a stand at least.
If 50% of the crucial workers at all places of employment pulled a sickie, the other 50% won't be able to function....try it.It works very well for transport workers ,pilots, doctors, magistrates ,air traffic controllers,I hear.

  20. Another nail on the coffin for the illegal regime if Fiji. They're just digging their own graves and is a sign of insecurity, instability and lack of foresight. Let's see for how long can they hold on to power as the world is closing in. Diplomacy and dialogue are their last hope before the UN sanctioned the use of force. Strond arm dicatorships and gross violation of human rights are simply not acceptable and non negotiable in this day and age. VB and AK are simply living in denial!

  21. Unions are trouble makers. When they start losing, they work on destabilising strategies.
Well done ASK, you kicked them out

  22. One thing this idiotic AG should have thought was not to piss off the unions. Think about the Nation, rather than to loose face in front of the Nation. You greedy bastard! Unions can cripple are nation. If they boycott Fiji. Imagine all the containers going to Fiji and ships stopping over for refueling to go to Fiji. The Unions wont do anything. Imagine the Planes. No off loading or loading of baggages or even re-fueling. So, look forward to less items on the shopping aisle people. If you say nah we can get it from Asia.. Duh.. The ships still need to fuel up in Ozzie ports before going to Fiji. Dou yavu bavulu. Au kerea me sa vakarau na lai teitei...

  23. Quite impressive really! The universal talent of Khaiyum apparently includes foreign affairs as well as PM. Sometimes I really wonder how long the smarter senior officers in the military let this gentlemen rampage. This time his actions could be a bit costly. Muzzling unions in Fiji is simple, but I doubt this works in Oz and NZ.

  24. Anyone who thinks it was a good idea to send these guys home is plain silly.

AG and his cronies would have benefitted from the opportunity to dialogue with these guys and try to convince them of their point of view. Let them hear their side of the story.

Sharon Smith - Johns.. What an embarrassment to Fiji and Australia you are!!

  25. Kai dias kicking out kai valagis from Fiji, while kai vitis sitting back drinking grog. Fiji has lost more friends in the last five years than at any time in it's growing history as an unstable nation. Let's see what happens now, get ready for more hardship people. No use paying tax, no use paying FNPF, thieves are running the show!

  26. I also found out Sharvada advised about deporting. That is because his research found no other grounds to deter the unionists.

  28. Amazing solidarity amongst bloggers of all races. We wouldn't be in this state of affairs had we had this unity before 1987. Now it seems the indigenous are pissed of about coups. Before it was everybody else only whilst the indigenous smiled and went about their daily lives after every coup: the first in 1871(seru Cakobau+ KKK) then 1987(Rabuka+RFMF) and then 2000(George+Mere samisoni and friends)LONG LIVE SOLIDARITY!!

  30. Here we go again-same old same old! Where were these Unions 4 years ago-goodness there are people who now support Frank because the Union within Fiji were so cleaver to join Frank! Just because they all had a falling out people had to suffer more years but the greater confusion this has caused is that some begin to see Frank as a Saviour thats just a simple fact rightly or wrongly! These overseas Union would have had briefings from their counterparts in Fiji when Frank took over telling them exactly where they stood-its for this very reason the Australian & NZ Unions did nothing! The big , big question now is what will these unions now do-CRIPPPLE Fiji with BANS? If they want to apply those tactics-which they may think will work, i just have the forsight to think that Frank has already thought out his plan of action which may suprise some because so far almost everyone thinks that Frank is a dope! Well we will soon see-the truth of is because so far every move has been countered by Frank including what the Aussie & NZ Govt have tried. The ultimate question that needs to be addressed by all is this-we want democracy as we all seem to now claim-right, so did democracy not work when we had it? Was it democracy? Until we address the core issues in the problem of democracy that we had and that we aspire to have we will still have a systemic failure of our Governments! Is the answer to be found by going back to elections ?Does it mean we still await Franks agenda till the promised elections? Do the Fijians want an election now?
We all about to see how this Union challenge goes-is this end of Frank or the beginning of something no one could have predicted? DRi Yani ra gone.

  31. Whenever there is negative press about Fiji in the ANZ media, ASK always tells them "Why don't you come to Fiji and see for yourselves?".

So the ANZ Unionists came to see for themselves and got deported!

    Go figure!
