Telecom CEO 'quit over board interference'

Hatching and despatching: Kogadagoda and Khaiyum
The CEO of Telecom Fiji Limited, Rohan Mail, resigned over what sources say was interference by board chairman Ajith Kodagoda and the demand the company start imposing the controversial Employment Essential National Industries on workers.

It's also said the board wants to reduce staff by 40% immediately and that management have said 50% of staff are old fashioned and should be removed using the ENI decree. Expiring contracts should also not be renewed.
Rohan Mail
Sources say Kodagoda is also trying to get the board to sell TFL to an offshore company rather than try to revive what us being described as a dead horse - on the suggestion of the illegal attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.

Rohan Mail was appointed in July last year and media reported he resigned to pursue other opportunities after just 17 months at the helm. TFL chairman Tom Ricketts thanked Mail for his 'invaluable service to TFL, acknowledging the major role he played in making it more competitive and sustainable'.

But sources say Kodagoda has been busy issuing instructions behind the scenes and that Ricketts was given instruction to make life difficult for Mail so he would resign instead of them having to terminate him.

Insiders say Ricketts has let it be known at Suva's Defense Club that he can't do anything and he is 'pissed off as he is treated like a puppet by Kodagoda.'
He also said Mail is not leaving for better career opportunities but from frustration. Ricketts is also reported to have said TFL will never recover and that potential buyers from overseas are already being sought.

So Cable & Wireless were right in their bid for TFL and FNPF paid far too much for what is now a lame duck.

Here we go again!

Fijians at home, when will you wake up and smell the Ceylon Tea brewing in your backyard to take-over what is yours!?

No CEO in their right mind will resign after ONLY 17 months int he business world BUT of course when dealing with a DICTATORSHIP is another story.

Mr. Mail should DOCUMENT and share with the world his experiences with these GOONS in the regime.

AiARSE kei KOKONA dua ga vei kemudrau na DAKAI DA!

Well what else do you expect of a Board made up of underachievers staring from their Chairman, Tom Ricketts?

The TFL Board comprises people who have no experience or knowledge running corporate organizations let alone one that is involved in a highly technical field like telecommunications.

For his part, Ricketts was only a third rate banker, who at his peak was only giving out personal loans. He is a unqualified idiot whose appointment to the Chairman position was due to his loyalty to the illegal regime, and not professional skills. The rest of the Telecom Fiji Board members were appointed for the same reason.

These people have no idea of running a telecommunications company, and or turning around one. That is why their only plan now is to sell the company.

Telecom Fiji is a flagship company for Fiji, and has a lot of strategic assets which could be better utilised to generate better returns then what it is achieving today. Remember not too long ago it was performing well.

Ricketts was personnaly responsible for recruiting Rohan Mail, the South African, even though there was some doubt about his capabilities, and ahead of better candidates locally.

The next and most logical step for Ricketts and company is to sack themselves and hand over running the company to a better group of professionally qualified people to look at other options on how to revive Telecom Fiji instead of concentrating on one option only to sell the company.

Telecom Fiji can be revived but it needs better leadership than what it has today.

If Ricketts can't do anything about it why is he still there? Why blame someone else.

Telecom is a business and needs to be run like a business.
All companies do cost cutting - so what is wrong with the move by thr board. Infsct, being a CEO , Rohan should have suugested this- otherwise he was earning big dollars for what?..

Anonymous said...

In Fiji, we will never know. Today or in the past.

But bottom line is that FNPF must except that the companies value is now X and no longer Y.
On the present X value, what is the rate of return.
or more importantly , what was the new managements plan and outlook for future returns.

What will be interesting is what will Ricketts do. If it is true that he is bitching to his mates about getting shafted, then he has only one choice, resign!

Otherwise, he should stop being a complaining bitch and face the fact that he is khaiyums slut.

Let's do some basic sums. Vodafone with 600k customers run by 200 staff. Telecom with 100k customer run by 1000 staff. Surely staff numbers must be halved. I hear it is full of family members of senior staff. This must stop and people sent home packing.

Yes, blame CEO and force him to reduce staff numbers...Why no more money... but htis was brought about by the Board which forced TFL to buy and expensive OSS/BSS system from India and a NGN solution from China even though other tenders were 4 times lower than China.. why because this current regime only looks North to China... So don't balme the workers on the down fall of the company but the huge investment forced onto them..

Whenever Boards in Viti are mentioned one springs instantly to mind. Google FSC bells & whistles www - check out all lovely photos -endless lists of names and duties -then compare this with the reality now confronting what was once Viti's most prosperous industry & largest employer?

Until their manned by diligent & competent people who are accountable - Boards in Viti will continue to be the complete waste of money & recources they currently are.
Only consolation is that Viti is not alone - Boards world wide are under increasing pressure to explain to those who's money they supervise (and who pays them)just exactly what they did and didn't do this past 12 months?

Seems FSC has imprinted its own perculiar slant of doing things - gross incompetence is rewarded by promotion - how else can you explain the strange career projectory of FSC mechanical engineer Abdul Khan? And who although not directly responsible for purchase - did oversee the assembly of the most expensive pile of junk scrap metal ever imported into Viti.

TFL is in a fix operating under unfair legislation. imagine if they were allowed to also offer mobile phone services....they'd disrupt VF and digi biz - so really under current technology advances they can't compete when everyone is going mobile and they are told to just stick with landlines. Is it real telecom liberalisation? VFL and Digi now have unfair advantage.

Telecom is one of the most imoortant blue chip corporate asset that is owned by the people of this country. Ownership shud remain that way. Selling it away is like selling away our sovereignity. Telecommunications is an important industry for any country and it would be a big mistake deciding to part with it. You may do so with others but please I beg the powers that be that this particular asset remain with us. We are the hub of the region and it is important that such an asset as this remain with us to strengthen our status as such.

Ajith Kodagoda is one of the most dangerous and frustrating people in Fiji right now.
His personal portfolio of board appointments goes against what the regime said they were going to change years ago.

Kodagoda is chairman of FNPF, HFC and TFL just to name a few of these positions. Don't forget his regular job is the financial "brains" behind CJ Patel, one of the region's largest companies who also now happens to own the Fiji Sun (for which he also directs things). Is it any surprise there is zero critical analysis of FNPF and other Kodagoda-related businesses by the Fiji Sun? Could this be any sadder?

Note that decisions are made which ultimately benefit the CJ Patel group and its related companies not to mention Kodagoda directly.

Until he's gone from these government appointed positions, it's hard to trust any business side of this government.

remember voda was born out of telecom fiji. tfl is not allowed to operate its own mobile network. imagine if tfl tomorrow is given green light to also offer mobile services. even better for consumers as tfl will give voda and digi a run for their money...tfl has the landline customer base that they could bundle in with mobile plans. who'll complain then?

Commander Voreqe if you want to get rid of these problems just sack Aiyaz and his Muslim cronies, because if you DON'T than we up here at Delainabua will remove you too! This is just a warning, DON'T take it lightly or we will remove you upon your return to Fiji!!!

I hate to say this but so far reading Mr Mannings comments of Fiji & Its people is nothing short of someone who has this inbuilt hatred of blacks. You have to see his reply to someone who in the past commnets questions his dealing with Aboriginal in their country. His ancestors claimed was uninhabitated until very recently when it was taken to the High Court! What has drums got to do with Fijis telecommunications. For you information Mark Manning Fijins never communicated by "drums' as you call it 'drums'was never used in Fiji as opposed to Africa! Now some of us have read you stupid comments now and then & have let it go-you surely have a thick "foreskin" to put it lightly & certainly have an inferiority complex in the guise of a Superior one! You just a sad damn , white arse that needs to be told to your face - you must living off the dole or age pension?? You white lump of a fat good for nothing.Just good at belittling Fijians in the guise of trying to fight for our cause. I have now found out more about you all you were good for was smelling the arses of Aboriginal women because you couldn't get one of your colour to bed! Luveni vuaka tavu vaka ca!

newsflash !!!
Aslam Khan owns 20% of Vodafone NZ.
Bingo ,so that's where his hidden $1.3 million NZ dollars have gone to.This money was laundered out of Fiji over several years and was once not given clearance by a FIRCA official but seems to have taken permission from someone higher up the food chain in FIRCA

This Kodagoda guy is from where?

He is not a Fijian (Fiji citizen)?

So what kind of visa does he hold and what are the terms of that visa? How can an ALIEN hold so many important positions and crucial ones to some of Fiji's homegrown business entities?

As my son used to say, 'Sa sega ni macala sara ga'!!!

Apart from the fact that Airyarse is f#*&@&% Fiji well and good, it is clear to see that his 'pretent PM' has broken every word of his coup press conference of that fateful December evening.

Yet, the most infuriating thing of all - the apathy and inertia of the people. This regime is only as strong and powerful as the people lets it [even the most fearsome dictatorships are obliterated when people's power is awakened].

So what will it take for the people to wake up from their slumber and realise how our beloved nation is being destroyed?

Hopefully before it ends up in the scrap heap!!!

Tom Ricketts is a good administrator, very sensible and balanced. He was the highest rated local Bank manager at Westpac and there were only three other such managers who have all retired.

I dont know much about Mark Manning but just one small correction to your history. Our ancestors did use drums (lali) in the past to communicate. You only hear them now early in the mornings as you lie in bed summoning people to early morning prayer and church.

In the past it was used to summon people to temples and meetings, tell other neighbouring villages of friendly visitors or approaching enemy. Challenge (by visiting war parties who carried huge lalis in their war canoes)and defiance during war by defending villages who used it to summon their allies at the same time etc. etc.

Listen to your spirit and stop selling yourselves like the prostitutes you are harassing in Lautoka

I AM A FORMER STAFF OF TELECOM AND THE PROBLEM IS TFL IS ITS MGMT AND LACK OF GOOD LEADERS . TFL IS IN A UNIQUE SPACE AS IT HAS NO COMPETITION AND IT HAS MOBILE OFFERING THROUGH EASY TEL . IT COULD HAVE EASILY DONE EASY TEL AND FIXED LINE BUNDLES AND NOONE WOULD HAVE COMPETED IN THAT SPACE AND COULD HAVE HELD A LEADING POSITION TODAY . INSTAED TFL IS BLEEDING - THANKS TO COMPETITION THE REALITY HAS NOW BECOME EVIDENT AFTER 3 YEARS OF COMPETITION .
SO WHY BLAME OTHERS - BLAME YOURSELVES FOR NOT ACTING FAST ENOUGH AND YES THERE ARE RELATIVES AND NON PERFORMING PEOPLE AT TFL WHO SHOULD HAVE GONE LONG TIME AGO .

My ancestors used lali's you damn right -drums were made from the hide of animals? Ours was from the hollowed out trunk of trees. As for its history ie the lali i could write more but won't bore you! Mark Manning's writing is a subtle way of belittling people, one has to understand where he comes form and his attitudes towards those of a different race on this website its Fijians! One has to read his postings to soon find out what he tries his best to hide, because he slips up quite often! Pity he has grown old with hate still part of his ingrown survival mechanism-whilst the pretend game carries on-as said by previous writers why doesn't he do something for the indigenous people of Australia -his adopted country?

Anonymous said...

Mark Manning sounds like someone who is a racist and is using this space to belittle us in Fiji. Please stay away if your only intention is to cause more respite to a people that is still trying to find it's way...go tell your government to give more freedom to the natives of your country instead of shouting over the fence to your neighbours..it ain't helping anyone...

Thanks to competition , the weakness in companies have shown up and TFL is the first one to pop up . Why ?? somone should have seen it coming !! everywhere in the telco business the fixed line business has eroded and Fiji is no exception . So why are people in TFL and ATH amused . Wake up guys at TFL and ATH and act fast . TFL has a future and it needs some good people to drive it and focus on its core business . Digicel is eating up TFLs pie and Vodafone is reacting too slowly as they expecting TFL to fight but I suppose TFL is too slow at this game of competition .Thanks to competition - today we getting the benefit of real deals .

Anonymous said...

ATH is a holding company which combines Vodafone (the monopoly in mobile) with TFL (monopoly in landline), this was formed only with the intention to minimise the effect of Digicel entry.

Vodafone also allowed another mobile phone company 'Inkk' to run on its own network, a great way to launch a mobile company without paying licence fee!!!

It's no secret how 'good' friends are Aslam Khan and the Aiyaz Khaiyum.

Interestingly, recently appointed CEO of the Telecom Authority also resigned for 'other opportunities'.

The cost of all this is borne by poor Fijians...
