Fiji increasing military spending as gobal powers reduce their budgets

The president of the United States, Barack Obama, has announced the military will become smaller as the Pentagon tries to reduce spending by nearly half a trillion dollars after a decade of war.

A new Defence strategy unveiled today also calls for the U.S. military to "rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific region" even as it continues to actively counter the threat of violent extremism.

"Even as our troops continue to fight in Afghanistan, the tide of war is receding," Obama said.

Obama and Congress agreed in August to reduce projected national security spending by more than $450 billion in the next decade.

They also agreed on automatic spending cuts that could slash another $600 billion from the Pentagon budget unless Congress agrees on an alternative.

In contrast, the Fiji military will have increased revenue from the government this year.

According to Fiji's 2012 Budget, the RFMF's income will be increased by $5.2m excluding an Infrastructure upgrade of $550,000.

The Central Intelligence Agency says that out of 172 countries, Fiji is ranked 76th in terms of its defence spending and GDP.

Therefore in comparison with its GDP, Fiji's military budget is bigger than 96 countries including New Zealand, Italy, Thailand, Germany and Canada.

  7. Fiji Military an unnecessary evil made up of a bunch of poorly educated arrogant Dutch courageous bludgers who are good only for road training and ground drills 24/7...

If they were drawing pay for doing community services work, cleaning up our beaches or working on industrial and supermarket wastes minimization projects in all peri urban and rural areas, THEN IT WOULD BE WORTH IT.

You have used the word "was". You are using threatening language that we will be 'killed'.
Let me tell you -[1] You are absolutely correct in saying "was". The Army that we knew used to be a proud and dignified institution. You, the murdering swines have tarnished all that. You are now a sad part of the Army's history!!
[2]The fact that you have threatened that we will be 'killed' confirms to us that the killer instinct in your murderous Commander has also rubbed off on you!!

  12. MONK SAYS..........

FIJI IS BETTER OF WITHOUT THE ARMY.
A COUNTRIES ARMY DON'T KILL ITS OWN CITIZEN LIKE THE FIJI ARMY.

THEY KILL OUR FATHERS, UNCLES, BROTHERS, COUSINS, THEY TORTURE OUR MOTHERS, SISTERS & STOMP ON THE STOMACHS, THEY RAPE THEM ETC ETC.

I AM REALLY SAD ABOUT THESE HAPPENING TO OUR OWN PEOPLE - ALL THESE DONE BY THE MILITARY JUST BECAUSE OF ONE MAN..FRANK BAINIMARAMA.

WHY BECAUSE HE KNEW HE WAS GOING TO BE PROSECUTED AND SENT TO JAIL.

WHY ALSO BECAUSE OF GREED BY PEOPLE LIKE MAHENDRA CHAUDARY WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE EXECUTION OF THE COUP. YOU SEE MAHEN, THIS IS WHAT FIJI GETS WHEN YOU CANT CONTROL YOUR DIRTY POLITICS AND CAN'T WIN FAIR & SQUARE.

FIJI WE ARE NOW IN THE NEVER NEVER'S....

BRING ON MORE COUPS.......NEXT ANOTHER SENIOR MILITARY WILL SOON BE FED-UP WITH FRANKS BULL -SHIT AND STAGE A COUP.

MORE COUPS TO COME...TAKE IT FROM FRANK IN 2000 WHEN HE SAID NO MORE COUPS AS LONG AS I AM THE COMMANDER.

    .....RESULTS...SHIT HAPPENS..

  13. The lies coming out of Washington on defense spending, misrepresenting the minuscule cuts being proposed as slashing the budget and compromising “national security.” The truth is that what is being proposed are minor reductions in the rate of growth in projected defense spending and would really only bring the Pentagon’s base budget down to 2007 levels (if the cuts were even imposed in a substantive way).

Armies is well for following orders, for as long as you can understand and carry out instruction. Army is the place for you.

So any dumb ass can then join, even those at at Saint Jiles.

So much so when you have a madman as it's commander

  17. Increase in social problems is a clear indication of poor economic activity, especially when we have uneducated army officers and immature lawyers leading the nation. Look at Burma, North Korea and the likes.

Army Officers instead of giving civilian jobs to the trained rightful candidates, greedily grab the job themselves. Why then an increase in the army budget this year. Are they collecting two pay packs.

    1. Prostitution is in the increase, todays fiji times - mums prostitutes themselves to support family.
    2. Unemployment is shooting through the roof.
    3. Crimes is escalating. Why we need more magistrate and court judges.
    4. Many are joining the social welfare food voucher scheme, which the government will be reducing exponentially from this year. More prostitution and crime will be the result.

  18. The RFMF is well regarded abroad for how it acquits its peacekeeping duties, but it is a disgrace in Fiji. True, only a coterie around Bainimarama is responsible for most of the thuggery, but more professional members remain silent, many of them bought off with civil service sinecures. There is only one way for the RFMF to redeem its reputation. It needs to restore democratic governance and then accept virtual disbandment. But that would require a military that truly cares about its country and not just itself, so don't hold your breath.
