Retired PNG Colonel says he's taken control to resolve impasse

Emerging information confirms a mutiny is taking place in Papua New Guinea and is being led by a retired colonel who says he's taken control of the country's military.

Yaura Sasa is threatening to use "necessary actions" to resolve a stand off between the two would-be prime ministers.

Details surrounding the situation are unclear as both the current government of Peter  O'Neill and supporters of the former prime minister, Sir Michael Somare (left), maintain they have the upper hand.

But it's being widely reported the retired colonel, Yaura Sasa, has revealed himself as the man behind the group of soldiers who stormed the barracks this morning firing  several shots and taking defence force commander Francis Agwi hostage. He's now under house arrest.

Sasa has admitted to media he was appointed by Somare but says today's action is not a military mutiny or takeover.

Sasa says he has given Somare and O'Neill seven days to return to parliament to resolve what he called the country's constitutional impasse.

Somare and O'Neill have been at a stand-off since last August after O'Neill decided to assume the leadership role, claiming ongoing absence by Somare overseas due to illness.
The ABC says PNG's deputy Prime Minister, Belden Namah, has told reporters that 15 of the 30 or so men supporting Sasa have been arrested.

Namah, a former soldier, said the retired Colonel does not have the support of the wider military and that he should give himself up.

He said Colonel Sasa's actions amount to mutiny, which carries the death penalty.

  1. This fellow Colonel Sasa has to be made an example of to prevent a domino effect. Rabuka, Bainimara and even Speight should have faced the death penalty as the warning that these type of actions are totally unacceptable.

Unfortunately, Rabuka was let off the hook and basically signalled to all future military personnel that one could get away scot free and actually do quite well from coups.

This action in PNG stinks to high heaven in that it is the distastefull action of an aging "has-been" politician still trying to cling on to power when his use by date has long expired. It is critical for PNG's democracy to peacefully pass on from the Somare generation to the younger new generation of the future.

Contemporary analogy is that idiot in Zimbabwe - Robert Mugabe, and also to some extent Kamisese Mara of Fiji during his time.

It is critical for the PNG nation to move on to the next phase of its democratic transition. For heaven sake piss off Somare and hang Colonel Sasa as a lesson.

  4. The coup disease is introduced into the PNG body politic by an ageing politician and an ageing army commander (retired). They are both in denial of that they belong to the era of the past.

The proud nation of PNG has joinned the group of afro fuzzy hairs who commit coup after coup after coup. These type of nations are underpinned by corruption, cronnyism and nepotism.

This is the begining of the end of Papua New Guinea. More coups will emerge and the nation will in time be destroyed from within. Once coup culture has taken hold it will progressively get worse and kill the nation state.

The only way to save PNG is for Indonesia to take over. Bye bye PNG.

  6. Stand in Australian foreign minister Martin Ferguson in ABC interview.

"There is no question that Peter O'Neill is PNG's legitmate foreign minister".

And people wonder why Australia's Pacific policy is the mess it is?

  7. The other military units must combinne and oust Colonel Sasa in order to preserve the integrity of the Nation of PNG.

Then, Colonel Sasa must be hung as a public demonstration of his wrong-doing and endangering the survival of the state.

  8. This fella claims that he was appointed by Michael Somare, the buddy of the late Ratu Mara. Folks, this chap is doing the dirty work for Somar, like Rabuka was called on to do for Mara after he lost the election to Bavarda. Lets see if Somare will let this chap cling on to power for six years from now onwards like he allowed his pet pig in Fiji to do so after the treason of december 2006 Welcome to the club

  9. Exactly, Grab this retired Colonel Sasa and hang the bastard and that,s exactly what we intend to do to Bainimarama and Khaiyum! These
bunch of power hungery macafaka must be publicly executed when the
Government is returned to the people. The French revolution is where we can all learned from especially as to it's method of how to execute these thugs in public.Cut off the head would be a good start for these thugs?

And then that ruling was overturned.

Stick to the issue man. This Colnel isnt even the Army anymore. He is nothing more than a terrorist and will hang.

Agree with others. Rabuka and FB should also hang as they both crossed the line that defines Military place in society.

  12. Very wary about what sort of Fiji some of you people want once this current mess is sorted?

"Publicly executed - hang people - cut of heads"?

Rather tolerate this dysfuctional gang than share you peoples distorted 'non Taukei' visions.

  19. @ Anon 1:01.
Maybe acceptable where you people originate from but there's no room in a Taukei vision for a better Viti that includes execution of anybody - offenders included.

If some of you people are unhappy & uncomfortable with a future majority Taukei goverment which is a certainty under a 1 vote 1 value voting system suggest you do what thousands of your compatriots have done - leave.
This mess - whether you like it or not has its origins in Indian immigration & if you want confirmation suggest you read Tuimacilai? Its all there - how Indian politicians confidently planned the eventual takeover of Viti.
Rather be an Indian under Taukei rule than vice versa.

  20. @12.11

    Have they apologized?

What have they got to apologize for , they think they are right.

One cant forgive somebody if they aren't looking for forgiveness.

    Forgiveness is not without conditions.
In the Bible it says get forgiveness from whom you have hurt before coming to my table to give sacrafice and request forgiveness.

...but obviuosly you need to cees and discist from what you are doing.
    then and only then...

    ReplyDelete
  21. There are distinct passages in the Bible which advise a separation of religious and state affairs. For example this is clear in the Biblical saying "Render unto Ceaser the things that are Ceasar's and to God that belongs to God".

For matters of personal, everyday religiosity one could apply the Biblical admonition "Vengence is mine".

But in matters of state where serious crimes have been committed such as treason, this is the realm of Ceaser or the State. Thus, due process of the criminal justice system must be employed. Those who have trivialised these vitally important laws of the Fijian nation must pay the penalty according to laws. Even if it means execution.

Too many coupsters in Fiji have walked away from this serious crime. They signal to others watching that treason is nothing. That in Fiji one can actually become financially rewarded and become revered as a hero. This is a digusting state of affairs which actually puts Fiji down the lavatory pipe.

Those who have committed coups including Bainimarama and Kaiyum and their co-conspirators must face the law and hang if they have to hang. It will be a good outcome for Fiji and serve as a dire warning to future perpetrators.

By all means practice your Christian morality in your personal lives, but for crimes against the state religion must step aside and let the laws of the state and due process take its course.

  34. Some of you people have got a nerve comparing India with China. An Indian minister was recently quoted as saying.

"India was a 3rd world country with delusions of being a superpower".

Please - all Indians - just leave us alone & go. Over a hundred years after coming here without our consent your still wearing sari's & worshipping a multitude of idols & speaking Indian - assimilation my arse - your objective has always been colonisation - another little Mother India...
Don't suppose you've noticed how the "white" people in ANZ regard & treat you?
You never had it so good in Viti & yet you still blew it.
You've amazing - always seeking the "victim" status.
We know who we are - what we are - where we belong & where we come from - we also know what you are - stateless opportunists parasites in an endless search of more victims. Vinaka.
