Estimated flood damage more like $30million instead of $8million

Claims the flooding in the western division is being played down. A government statement puts the damages at just around 8 million dollars but information sent to Coupfourpointfive says a more comprehensive assessment by officials of areas where thousands of people are without water and houses are filled with mud and facing continuous raining, puts the tally much higher.

Inside sources claim the actual and more realistic assessment of damage is as follows:
Road and bridges: $7 million dollars
Agriculture (sugar) : $15 million dollars
Agriculture (others): $3 million dollars
Houses and infrastructure: $6 million dollars
It's being said the sugar cane was not harvested in most of the areas in Ba last year therefore all crops this year are damaged. Sugar production in 2012 is predicted to reach just 100,000 tonnes.
Observers agree the government response has been very poor. Hierarchy have been making visits after being invisible the first few days of flooding but have since been relying largely on Red Cross and NGOs for the aid work, although an appeal has generated thousands of dollars.

A regime statement says the administration remains focused in its efforts to bring about stability and to normalise services and operations to flooded areas.

The Ministry of Provincial Development permanent secretary, Inia Seruiratu, has been quoted as saying the country is going through tough times but donations like the $5,000 one from Home Finance Company Limited towards the Prime Ministers Flood Appeal account is making a difference.

Seruiratu says 25 evacuation centres are still in operation with about 2,000 people in the Western Division.

The illegal leader, Frank Bainimarama, has also announced there will be no rental fees on government land leases in areas badly affected by floods in the declared disaster zones in the Western Division for a year.

Bainimarama’s decision comes after a two-day tour of the West assessing the damages caused by the flood.

In a release, the Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimone Kau says the decision will mean government land tenants in the affected areas in the West will have their land rent free from January 2012 to January 2013 waived.

Kau says the Ministry will work with the Commissioner Western, Joeli Cawaki, and his team to identify who will qualify for the exemption.

The running and co-ordination in the Western Division DISMAC office is just out of synch!
Why? For the very simple reason that Cawaki is has been a NAVY man!
Like the Vore, he loves and thrives in having a entourage of at LEAST 10 vehicles following him around for whatever. Some of the Western HODs have complained that they spend more time following him around than attending to their day to day duties.
By the way, have you people realised how some of the appointees are showing a lot of their pot bellies - must be the lifestyle!! Just look at Cawaki and his TAMANI pot belly. He loves his FREE food and FREE yagona!! Mata ni tu kuneya!!!!

to ancient proxy on the subject; and left ancient resolution- MANA- takes it's course? Hopefully Bai will come to his senses real soon and return our Government back to democratic administration, so the

Looking back at history one will notice that China and Russia will never stand for what is right and humane. Every time their is a threat to human life because of oppression by the evil regimes that run some countries in this world and the UN wants to do something China and Russia will veto UN Resolutions in the name of not interfering in internal affairs of a nation. These 2 countries are the true Satan's of the world and we are sucking up to them because right thinking countries will no longer help us because of FRANK. Russia wants Fiji's support on matters relating to Georgia and China wants our resources period. They have no interest in any thing else from Fiji. They will never help Fiji just because it is the right things to do. Sadly our dictator will never understand because he is so desperate. I really shudder at the thought of a modern world without the USA and its Allies. Without them the Franks of the world will have a free hand at every thing. God Bless America and God bless Fiji and all its people and may he give us the strength to stand up for ourselves.

Don't see any Russian tourists in Aussie or NZ so this scheme will only attract the riffraff Russian mafia.
The little clown from Kiuva was boasting at the Denarau bar that Russia would help him build a nuclear arsenal to teach the Americans,Aussies and Kiwis a lesson.

Given the constant lobbying from the regime who crave recognition we can expect some huge cheques from their new friends. Apparently some take offense to the comparison of fiji's new support network, china venezuela, Russia, Benin, to their traditional customers when it comes to their frequent request for hand outs. It must kill them when aus nz us uk etc stump the cash and their new friends are always in the mens room when the bill comes to the table. That's the pacific way, generous up to the point of actually giving anything of actual value, and looking for the next pimp.

Another opportunity to boost for the PM's slush, oops, I mean 'flood relief' fund. I'd be surprised if even the Chinese embassy will fall for that one again.

And what ever DID happen to all that money contributed in 2009, and the PM's promises to dredge the Nadi River?

Interesting thing that mana. It seems that the areas that have most supported this regime are the ones most affected by one natural calamity after another.

The IG leadership and their supporters commenting here can think and say whatever they like that sound good to their ears and arouse their egos to do the 'vutu lucky and sotomi'...but the fact remains that the on-going natural disasters during Bainimarama's illegal reign will continue unabated.

Like that Fijian saying...IT IS AS IF THESE NATURAL DISASTERS HAVE EYES PICKING AND CHOOSING THEIR TARGETS.

Bainimarama, NATURE IN THE MIGHTY HANDS OF THE ALMIGHTY GOD is ruthless...at present striking at the very core of your development planning; improved transport and communications infrastructures and amenities...NOW WHAT ARE YOU GPOING TO DO? SELL THE NATION FOR MORE MULTI MILLION OR BILLION DOLLAR LOANS? (FROM WHERE? MAYBE RUSSIA OR CUBA?).

Bainimarama, you are getting yourself deeper and deeper into the RUT OR MAYBE ROT OR WORSE STILL SEWERS...

U know, I perceive nothing wrong with your take-over as I believe since GOD allows all things to happen at the behest of man's decision and choice process, there was a need for a forced change given the arrogance, self righteousness, selfishness, snobbishness, sexual misconduct of a few with young female youths and high and mighty attitude of some of the previous Democratic Government Ministers.

However what is important for JVB to realize is when to end the IG charade...and you should have done as you said at the start (your word should be your honour, make you honourable)...make changes and return country to democracy without taking anything to gain from the take-over.

You did not and got greedy...why I kniow that GOD has deserted you JVB...note that now he is working against you and you are going down UNLESS... YOU DO THE RIGHT THING AND DO THINGS RIGHT as soon as possible...let the Legal system and process take its course for this is GODLY here on earth and is better than EVERLASTING HELL.

Otyherwise, WARAKA NAMAKA!!!!!!!!

Good news Buzy Body. Can use some of those millions to pay local & foreign investors who are owed millions by FIRCA going back over 6 years.

After the last big flood about three or four years ago, Fijians living overseas sent containerloads of relief supplies to Fiji. To their horror, the illegal Fiji Government charged each congtainer a duty of $700 on arrival.

Hard to believe the number of colonels appointed by the FMF to run a small troop? Seems to me that there is no private in the Fiji Army and everyone is a colonel

Nadi town will continue to be flooded in the future because economic consideration appears to be a priority rather than the livelihood of our very own people. Government via its tourism initiatives have simply blocked the waterways made by the MASTER planner and now wants to build islands in the outlets in Denarau etc...So when there is a heavy downpour in the highlands the rate of the waterflow will be slower than normal because the mouth of the river and its tributaries are now much smaller. So for every tourist dollar in foreign exchange earnings is nullified by the rehabilitation costs paid by government after every big flood. And the lack of govt funds to maintain the Nadi river adds to the woes..

The catastrophic damages of the recent flooding at the North and Western Division have consequently set back the State initiatives in developing some of the areas that were undeveloped for decades. Imagine the millions of dollars been poured over to these areas of the past 5 years to improve the infrastructure, facilities and the services for its habitants and to see that it been depleted by nature brought disappointment to those who worked behind the scene to provides these amenities either through policies, funding and contractors, negotiator, and ordinary workers and service providers . I admired the word of the founding father of Gospel Asia Mr. K.P Yahannan in one of his presence during a presentation of policies by an institutions to him and the board members. After the sensational visualize presentation, the board members ask Mr. Yahannan for his view in relation to the presentation, he replied with a single powerful paraphrase “ Have You Present Your Plan to the Lord through Prayer and Fasting “ that sent shockwave to all those who were in the boardroom. For us in authority who have these tremendous ideas and policies of how we should we govern our nation and the plan for development and so forth , we should ask ourselves the same questions in which Mr. Yahannan put it to the board. Our Lord have mention in Psalm 127:1 “1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labour in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. Lets begin in 2012 in putting our nation affairs to the Lord rather than our humanly intellect or we will continually losing millions of dollars resources and infrastructure without any humanly control on our part.
