Aust and NZ reject claims of a u-turn on Fiji

The 'upbeat' pic Fiji Sun was using over the 'talks' report
Australia's new Foreign Affairs Minister has poured cold water on regime supporters claims he intends to ease up on Fiji.

Bob Carr says he is still gathering information on Fiji and is talking to a number of people, including the Australian Council of Trade Union, especially about the unlawful treatment of trade unionists.

"Certainly one of the tests we'd consider in the future is the right of organisation in the workplace. That's a fundamental human right."

Carr rejected talk of Australia backing down after informal discussions yesterday in Auckland with New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Murray McCully.

“All I can say at this stage is that I am talking to colleagues about Fiji but at this stage, the statement from the Fiji government is something we will look at. It’s interesting, but we wouldn’t go beyond that at this time.”

Regime supporters, made up of a small group of academics like Richard Herr and Anthony Bergin from the Australian Strategic Policies Institute (they wrote the report Our New Abroad, Australia and Pacific Islands Regionalism) and coup apologist reporter Graham Davis, have been egging the Australian government to engage with Fiji, claiming isolating it has failed and Australia is the only one persisting with such an unworkable policy.

On Thursday, several Australian newspapers (Adelaide Now, the Herald Sun and the Australian) claimed Carr was dumping the former Kevin Rudd hard line stance on Fiji and planned to offer an olive branch and soften some of the 'sticks' currently being used against Bainimarama.

One report also claimed Carr was making an unexpected visit to New Zealand to ambush  McCully about a u-turn.

The misleading newspaper reports were fuelled by Davis' claims his interview with Bainimarama (see earlier story) for Sky News, where the coup meister said Australia is now alone among its ANZUS partners in refusing to engage with Fiji and 'revealed fresh details' of his plans to return to democracy in 2014, had prompted a Gillard u-turn.

The reports were subsequently 'followed up' by FBC and the Fiji Sun who claimed Carr had released a statement and it had been welcomed by Bainimarama who was open to talks.

Both Carr and McCully yesterday rejected the reports with McCully saying New Zealand would not be lifting the sanctions just because Bainimarama had announced his plans for consultations on a new Constitution.

Carr and McCully's clarification is welcome but the people of Fiji who want a true return to democracy must keep the pressure on Australia and New Zealand. Nothing can be taken for granted so we include here some useful email addresses and contact details for people to make their views known.

  1. Spin doctors trying to make Voceke and crew look good. Sorry it doesn't work and it won't work. Or perhaps it's a sign that the pig is starting to crawl and squeal his way back to NZ and Australia.

I don't know why you Fijians have put up with this pig for so long.

  2. Democracy says..

BOB CARR, pls get your facts right, understand & analyse Frank and Khaiyum thoroughly before jumping to conclusion.

These murderers and abusers of human rights are liars and cannot be trusted. They have fooled New Zealand already during the world cup by sending a fijian soldier to the games and upon return, made him rejoin the forces - remember "Nakarawa".

These guys are deceitful and merciless - they are law breakers. Bob just look at what they have done to trade unions - the people and particulary CRW soldiers killed in cold blood and denying ordinary citizens the right to challenge the illegal regime and their selective people to court.

Come on Bob - do not be a hypocrite. Stay with the ban.

FRank here in Fiji we know, he cannot be trusted. He will not allow Qarase and Chaudary to stand for elections. Even this is discussed around the tanoa grog bowl by Frank and laughs it away.

So what makes you think that he is genuine. he betrayed his fellow soldiers in 2000, his country in 2006 and held the country to ransom - and the list goes on.

The people of Fiji should be taught to claim their own freedom and not being spoon fed.

Let us be, we will find away to bury these dogs one day.

    God Bless Fiji

  11. Thanks to the World Wide Web, too many people know the truth about Frank Bainimarama, his association with the murders of the CRW soldiers in 2000 and his murderous Regime.
We will all keep Bob Carr informed so he can form an "informed" view on Fiji's current dilemma.

  15. Democracy says@2:03pm...RUM your foot prints are pretty easy to track. However, the PM picture looks
pretty relaxing and business like!your picture on the other hand, doesn't look pretty and in short order;you look crafty, unwanted, horrid, reluctance,
    and rejected.Your continuing attack
on Professor of Constitutional Law-Yash Ghai, does not help your case and image in foreign affairs! Obviously, you need someone to edit your outburst, before it is sent to the printers?Yash Ghai is of Tibetan heritage; and a citizen of Kenya.Educated at Oxford and Havard,is a Barrister of Law of the Middle Temple in London.
He is a retired dean of laws and the whole world, including the UN, sought his services, every single day! I am humble that the man was able to accept our Government invitation,to take on our problem.considering that he has to reshuffled, his million busy schedule; and come to Fiji to sort-out our troubled constitution! please,Have respect
for those that are trying to help us solved our problem?

  16. NZ & Australia can bring the regime to its knees very quickly - Stop all its citizens travelling to Fiji like the US did to its citizens in the Cuban crisis.

No tourism industry - no money to pay Military & Civil Servants who in turn will go all out to get rid of Voreqe & Aiarse.

People of Fiji will have to suffer but will be nothing like the Syrian people are now suffering in their bid to get rid of Dictator Azzad.

Come on Carr make my day - Cut all the diplomacy bullshit & take some hard action military or otherwise so that democracy and freedom is restored in Fiji.

Any comments from the dumbarses Mataivalu ni Solisona Ops.

  17. Word is cheap...action speaks louder and we have had a guts full of that since Dec 2006.

O cei beka eratou vakalialia tiko!

One understands the concerns raised by the two leaders (MPC and LQ) in terms of the committee members! Ms Vakatale aside, Satendra Nandan is a well known coup apologist so the committee is tainted even before they begin their work. To have credibility, then, the committee must be made up of credible qualified neutral people acceptable to as wide as possible from as many sectors as possible of the population . Otherwise, it is in danger of being seen as just another high faluting propaganda exercise this regime is so fond of committing itself to every few months just so they can justify their sorry existence!

  19. There is no Fijian in the Parliament In India so why give them seat in the Fijian Parliament.

Non Fijians are confusing the people with democracy and capitlism.

The real interest of non Fijian is based capitalism and kocokoco.

The 1970 Constitution is good enough in later years to bring about a democracy based equal suffrage without anyone have to suffer if they are really genuine to bring about a Government with one vote, one nation and one value.

They should have encouraged mix marriages. Example if an Indian man married a Fijian woman. That Fijian woman is entitled to register her son or daughter in the Vola Ni Kawa Bula which entitled the kids to own land and be member of the Mataqali.

And gradually one day will all be one people living side by side peacefully.

    God Bless Fiji.

NZ AND AUSTRALIA, STAY AWAY...WE DO NOT NEED YOU AS FIJI DOES NOT NEED THE WESTERN WORLD; DOES NOT WANT TO DEPEND TOO MUCH ON YOU.

WE ARE NOW DIVERSIFYING WITH OTHER BILATERAL AND MULTI-LATERAL RELATIONSHIPS; NOW HAPPY WITH THE EAST, RUSSIA, ASIA, CUBA AND THE NON ALIGNED WORLD...THOUGH NOT REALLY CHIRISTIAN WORLD BUT ARE BEING GRADUALLY CHRISTIANIZED AND ARE MORE GENUINE IN THEIR ACTIONS

JVB...THIS IS YOUR TIME...CONTINUE ON FOR ALMIGHTY GOD HAS ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN ON 5TH DECEMBER, 2006...THE BIBLE IS FULL OF STORIES OF THIEVES, HARLOTS, MURDERERS AND SINNERS BEING CHOSEN BY THE ALMIGHTY GOD AS HIS VESSELS AND DOERS TO RIGHT THE WRONGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE AND CARRY OUT HIS WILL.

MANY IN FIJI ARE SO SELF RIGHTEOUS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROPHETIC MESSAGES IN THE BIBLE FOR FIJI. GOD HAS DETERMINED TO REDIRECT YOU FROM YOUR ERRONOUS WAYS...LET US NOT BE SO ARROGANT TO ACCEPT THAT WE HAVE STRAYED FROM THE PATH.

MANY TALATALAS HAVE GONE FOR EARTHLY RICHES LIKE GOOD HOUSES TO LIVE IN, CARS AND FOUR WHEELS TO DRIVE BOUGHT BY THE CHURCHES WITH MONIES GIVEN BY THE CONGRGATIONS, USING THE WORK OF GOD TO TRAVEL OVERSEAS AND AND DO FUNDRAISING FOR WHATEVER PURPOSES BUT SUPPOSEDLY THEIR OWN...ETC. ETC.

WITHOUT TAKING AN INWARD ASSESSMENT OF THEMSELVES, THEY ARE ONLY LOOKING AT YOU (JVB) AND NOT THE ONE (ALMIGHTY GOD) BEHIND YOU WHO DECIDES WHEN YOUR TIME WILL END...

YES, JVB; YOUR END TIME WILL COME BUT AT ALMIGHTY GOD'S BEHEST AND IT IS YOUR DESTINY TO PREPARE NOW FOR IT; PUT EVERYTHING RIGHT, RIGHT THE WRONG, DO THINGS RIGHT, PLUG THE LOOPHOLES, ETC.

MORE SO SEEK OUR ALMIGHTY GOD'S DIRECTIONS AND DELIVERANCE NOW...MANY PEOPLE AROUND YOU ARE SO UNGODLY THAT THEY WILL ONLY TAKE YOU TO RUIN...THEY WILL JUMP SHIP LIKE RATS...THROW THEM OUT NOW.

SEEK GOD-FEARING QUALIFIED, SKILLED AND EXPEREINCED INDIVIDUALS NOW TO COME IN AND NAVIGATE FOR YOU...

FORGET THE DOUBTING THOMASES AND THE DETRACTING UNBELIEVERS...

  24. Graham Davis has LOST credibility. It was he, who started the media campaign to get Australia to change its stance. He claimed victory for himself when he reported Bob Car was re-thinking the Australian stance.
As a lobbyist for the Bainimarama government he has FAILED. As a so-called independent journalist, he has shown his bias. It now doesn't matter whether he was a one-time award winning journalist. He is now directly involved in lobbying for Bainimarama and so he cannot under any stretch of the imagination now claim to be an "independent" reporter. He should now maybe tell us whether he has received any payments from the Bainimarama regime.
    IN YOUR FACE, wannabe!!!!!
