Bainimarama abolishes GCC but becomes a Vanuatu chief

Vanuautu's newest chief Bainimarma aka Warwar. pic MINFO

"This is what sets up apart – our traditional ceremony and our solidarity"

It's the biggest hypocrisy out - Frank Bainimarama has killed off Fiji's Great of Council of Chiefs or Boselevu Vakaturaga but has himself become a chief in Vanuatu.

The country's self-appointed prime minister was installed as Chief of Malampa, one of the largest provinces in Vanuatu, five days ago - just as he was preparing gazette the disestablishment of the Great Council of Chiefs.

He revealed yesterday when he announced the GCC was formally abolished that the gazetting was done several days ago - probably about the time he was happily accepting his new chief title.

It's the biggest hypocrisy out and shows again that the 2006 coup leader is shutting down Fiji's traditional chiefly system to stifle the power they have on the people of Fiji to act against him.

For while he is happy to support another country's council of chiefs, he will not tolerate one in his own country because they are a threat to him.

Bainimarama's Vanuatu chief title is Warwar or chief of the island of Ambrym, which lies in northern Vanuatu in the Malampa province.

The ceremony to make him chief was according to the Ministry of Information release "four years of waiting and preparation following the Prime Minister’s adoption in 2008 by the chiefly family of Malampa."

He was given his title by the chiefs of the province at a traditional ceremony at the Melanesian Spearhead Group headquarters in Port Villa and the  ceremony was conducted by the National Council of Chiefs or the Malvatu Mauri as it is known.

In return for the title, Bainimarama gave two pigs - one for the chiefs and one for the Malampa province.

In his acceptance speech he thanked the people of Vanuatu, the chiefs and the government of Vanuatu for the traditional custom saying: “This is what we need in Melanesia, what sets up apart – our traditional ceremony and our solidarity.
“I thank the chiefs of the Malvatumauri for the traditional ceremony.”

Bainimarama also took the gifts presented to him by MSG members at the end of the ceremony, another traditional practice that he yesterday claimed made Fiji's GCC elitist and privileged.

We are in no doubt that this regime, led by the destructive hand of Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum and aided and abetted by Bainimarama, is working to destroy Fiji as it tries to justify its illegal rule.

We are not alone: numerous stories about the disestablishment of the GCC have appeared today on international news sites, so the world knows Bainimarama aka Warwar, is making war on his own people.

  2. Come on native Fijians, kill this traitor of a pig. It is ironic that a pig gets two pigs at the ceremony.

This evil devil has destroyed the foundation of Fijian culture, and not surprisingly, the Indians are supporting this move simply because the Indians don't have any culture. This was initiated by Aiyarsehole and the pig Voceke just obeyed like a sick puppy.

Come on Fijians, put this evil bastard out once and for all.

  3. This is just another illegal acts of this illegal regime, which we are least worried about, because if the the institution may be abolished on paper, it is very much alive within the lives of the Fijian community ( Kai Viti, I Taukei, First citizens, Taukei ni Qele, Taukei ni Vanua, Traditional owners of the lands, etc. etc.)

Where will all these acts of abolishing , abrogating, sacking, and destabilizing end?, because all the systems and institutions will find their way back, as in the past, as they have been around for centuries as opposed to a five year old regime.
Is the regime mindful of the consequences of not having social structures and traditional systems in a country that is on the brink of economic collapse, yes we just have to look at third world countries which have been ravaged by coups, natural disasters and famine, lawlessness sets in at an alarming rate, in which not many can live decent lives. Are we heading that way?
Or are we just acting in response for some short term interests like winning elections?
Let's remember that political power in this country, according to the existing constitution begins with the GCC, any other forum is illegal and unconstitutional. The GCC will have to appoint a President, who appoints an interim PM who appoints an interim government, which should take us to proper elections.
This regime has no mandate to make any constitutional amendment, it should be asked to immediately step down and let us elect a new government whom through our mandate can take us to a better future. We do not need any regime to do it for us, we deserve a proper government, nothing less, please !

  4. Please dont get racist. i plead with you. we are as frustrated as you are. we are indeed very sad the way the fijian institutions are being dismantled. what makes me even more sad is that this dismantling is done by fijian people themselves. Dont put Aiyaz in league with indians. just reflect:
1987 coup was executed for paramountacy of fijian people and their chiefs. 2000 coup was executed on behalf of Fijian people and chiefs. now in 2006 the same military has conducted a coup to destroy fijian chiefly system and their culture. who to blame? again its really sad to see gcc is no more!

  5. So true C4.5.

Ni-Van chiefdom better be careful of their "new chief" 'WARAI-LA'. He has a nasty habit of toppling those above him just because he thinks he deserves it.

  6. This is getting too far, if the GCC is abolished, then the regime should be asked to step down.

The call should be made loud and clear for everyone's ear.

  10. There has been mention of Chiefs politicizing the GCC, hasn't it sunk deep that the military is heavily politicized through abuse of power by taking advantage of its state duties of providing security.

Politics is everywhere and no one can really be pointing fingers.
Do we have to abolish the whole institution because of the actions of a few, which Chiefs.
If we do it to the GCC we should be fair to also do it to other institutions that have abused their roles right before our eyes, and perhaps identify the ones that have abused their positions, to become wanna- be politicians.
The fairest way to become politicians is to ask everyone to contest elections, and not enter from the back door and assume authority through the barrel of the gun, then try to make big structural changes to our country.
Come on, come through the right door, like everyone else!

  12. The outrageous article in the Fiji Sun (QARASE STIRS UP TROUBLE) saying that that the SDL cannot contest the election includes the following “The literal translation of its name is the “United Organisation of People of the Land”, in other words, indigenous Fijians – iTaukei”. This proves clearly that Bainimarama is aware of exactly what he was saying in his speech about abolishing the BLV.

  13. These criminals will never voluntarily step down. At the moment they are taking the whole country for a ride, while they bank their millions in overseas banks for themselves.
Get it into your heads. The only way they will go is by force.
So, who has the guts to do it.
By whatever means and method, someone has to decide to do it.
The longer you wait, the worse off the country will be and the longer the pathway back up to democracy and a normal prosperity.
You must get to the stage where you say" wev'e had enough" and "never again"

  17. Come on C4.5, why censor comments about Indians backing the decision? It appears that the Indians are happy to see this GCC, a national institution, abolished. That's the truth.

  18. THE INDIGENOUS FIJIANS OR THE I TAUKEI ARE A RACE OF WANNABEE WARRIORS BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL COWARDS....WARRIORS OF NAITASIRI, RA AND WAIMARO (KUBUNA), BATI LEKA AND BATI BALAVU OF BUREBASAGA AND TOVATA...YOU ARE ALL COWARDS.

THERE IS NO QUESTION ABOUT THIS...IT IS EVIDENCED ALL OVER THE PLACE; IN ALL KINDS OF SPORTS INCLUDING RUGBY, RUGBY LEAGUE, AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL BOXING, ETC. ALL OUR TEAMS HAVE NO GUTS AND PRIDE...ALL RIDING ON THE TAVEUNI BUS.

HOW CAN ONE EXPECT THEM TO STAND UP TO BAINIMARAMA AND ARMY WITH THEIR FIREARMS? THE ARMY AND bAINIMARAMA KNOW THIS; THAT THE I TAUKEI ARE AFRAID OF FIREARMS AS THEY THEMSELVES, BEING I TAUKEI WOULD DO THE SAME IF THEY HAVE NO FIREARMS...BECAUSE THEY ARE ALSO AFRAID OF GUNS.

What an irony. Remove the Chiefs of Fiji and become one elsewhere. Sa warai la. Mai na koro e warai.
