Pflieger goes backwards to go forward

Pflieger
Yet another effort by the regime and its gatekeepers to recreate a part of Fiji it doesn't like.

Blaming the brand for the airline's lack of soaring success, they have now changed the name of the national carrier from Air Pacific to Fiji Airways, with CEO David Pflieger saying a stronger brand is needed.

“Our current name and brand are not working. They are not recognised, they are not notable and they don’t help us sell tickets or fill our seats with passengers coming to Fiji.”

Going, going, gone. file pic

The national airline was known as Fiji Airways from the fifties to 1970 and Pflieger obviously thinks a return to the old name will create some much needed magic.

Return of the old...file pic
Internal ructions have dogged Air Pacfic since Pflieger took over with pilots and staff defecting to other airlines and it continuing to lose money and reputation.

The regime also recently tried to reduce the influence of major shareholder Qantas Airways saying the Aussies needed reining in and foreign control had to be regulated.

Pflieger and the illegal Tourism Minister, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, are pinning their hopes on fortunes picking up with the delivery of three new A330-200 next year.

The new planes are being paid for by a loan from the already well plumbed Fiji National Provident Fund, although Pflieger has claimed 85% of the money will be borrowed from offshore banks.

The airline is 51 per cent owned by Fiji, 46.3 per cent by Qantas and almost 2 per cent by Air New Zealand with Kiribati, Tonga, Samoa and Nauru holding less than 1% in all.

Editor's Note: Two takes below on the Air Pacific Fiji Airways makeover. Bloggers clearly calling it as they see it with regional media coverage providing a more sanitised version of where things are at.

Fiji airways sound's good, but we can see the desperation to save the crashing airline with all these name changes.

I prefer air pacific

A name change can often help businesses but this is naive and smacks of false hope.

No need to change the name, what you need is change the one running it. What's in a name anyway.

It worked for Fiji water so it will work for Air Pacific? Not sure the Fiji brand is that strong apart from the water. the world already knows the country is being run by a dictatorship

The name "Fiji" will spell doom for the airline. It's already on the way down. Flyers will not trust the safety of the airline with the Fiji tag on it because being a coup land, our travellers will not trust the safety standard of a country that is economically and politically unstable as everything in it will be deemed as unstable and high risk. At least the name Air Pacific reflects a wider picture and gives us some cover.

Agree with you Komai Naibenubenu..Fiji name has a curse attached to it because of it being run by goons and people will see the airline as one of high risk in as far as safety standards are specially with skilled aitline engineers leaving for greener pastures because of draconian labour laws introduced by the goonies.

Oh God..arent we sounding more stupid and desparate ?.Air Pacific sounds very friendly and peaceful..in the international arena, anything associated with Fiji is a shame and even the kai VTss arent pround of their country...this the signs of falling further into the abyss..poor strategic planning indeed

The truth is Fiji does not need a new constitution, the existing one is good enough.Perhaps, a few tweeks will bring it up to order. But Fiji's real woes are caused by idiots in the army.

The same applies with Air Pacific's name change to Fiji Airways. Ha ha ha. The fact is AIR PACIFIC is a very sophisticated and worthwhile name! The problem is the incompetants running it and the illegal government behind it that is generating so much negative karma. To avoid admitting failure, they want to revert to the old name with all sorts of bullshit excuses. That name Fiji Airways is a has been. The word Fiji, thanks to the army idiots, is strongly linked to insecurity, breakdown of law and general stupidity. So, that pathway will lead to failure also.

The Bible says "as you sow so shall ye reap". The Fiji mataivalu ni soli sona has ruinned Fiji's good name internationally. Slapping the word Fiji on an aircraft fuselage is a diabolical error. Its just postponning the inevitable. Another wasted millions of NFP pension money wasted by inept decision making. Hang them all from street lamp posts.

Now we are definitely going backwards..this is a joke..

You can use any name you like won't make difference if you have dopy leading and dopes following! They got rid of the good ones and now left with the shit managers, who can't say anything that the BOSS doesn't want to hear! To top of it off he is just another white dope who thinks he knows it all!

Clever, David. Now, how do you make money while the Regime has done its upmost to destroy the economy?

Remember back when Fiji had three different local airlines and flights direct to Suva? The economy was working back then - now, not so much. Well done cretins.

Names are important Mr. Pflieger, yes very important.

Ever considered changing yours to Mr. Pilferer!! Would be easier on our tongues and also apt for opportunist like you who come only to rape and rob our country dry!!

Just consider how much you are paid Mr. Pilferer for your bullshit ideas when two-thirds of our populace exists on below poverty line!!

Since you are somewhat of an expert on ‘Names’ – what’s your take on naming the proposed extension of Naboro Prison as “The Pflieger Wing” where the likes of you, Gates, Pryde, and Sharon-Stone would be temporarily housed before being made wards of your respective governments.

But I love my name thou. It is Babu, Bhaiya Babu. Remenber that.

Who ever hired David Pflieger needs to learn about employee recruitment. David Pflieger was an executive with a budget airline. He has no experience what so ever managing a 5 star airline. Two years ago Air Pacific was on top 10 list of the best airlines in the world. Today I am sure it will make it on worst 10 airlines in the world.

The service on board has a lot to be desired. The meals are pathetic. The service on board is a minimum to nil. The charges for extra baggage is astronomical.I flew Air Pathetic sorry I meant Air Pacific from LA to Nadi a year ago and have taken a vow NEVER to travel by Air Pacific again. I tell all my relatives, friends and business associates to keep away from Air Pacific. Wake up Board Members of Air Pacific and smell the java before it is too late.

Anonymous said...

I tend to agree with Fijiana. This is like hiring the manager of San Bruno Hotel to run Inter Continental Hotel. What does this fool know about running a world class airline? Air Pacific was in same class as Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and other top class airlines.

David Pflieger needs to be fired from his job. He is incompetent to be a CEO of Air Pacific.

Anonymous said...

The reason for name change is because the word is that the "rainbow" that air pacific uses is the international symbol for "gays". Hence the reason for the re-branding and name change. Now the question I ask is, who in air pacific has this knowledge relating to "gays"? How ironic that air pacific employs these consultants who are 'gays'. Here are their names. Len Sloper - in charge of airports. Jeremy Kingston - in charge of Logistics or better named 'il-logistics. Mark Turner- in charge of Guest Services. David Greene - in charge of Marketing. So air pacific is being run by a bunch of "p....fters" and that is how the knowledge of the international symbol for their community surfaced. What a bunch of 'wankers'. Suggest you don't shake their hand or if you do, do so with a pair of surgical gloves.

What a bunch if miserable so and sos you all are. So the name "Fiji" is on the nose with you all. Then you don't deserve to live here, come from here or have anything to do with the place at all. Why not move to someplace called "Pacific"?

What's wrong with the new name? Are you ashamed of your own country? "Yes, we're ashamed of the government". Well never mind the bloody government. Our national airline should be Fijian, not some generic regional gobbledygook.

The name was changed from Fiji Airways to Air Pacific in 1970 to reflect the fact that several regional governments had bought into it. Now they've gone, why keep it?

It's appalling that some of you want to see the national airline crash. In fact, it's treason as far as I'm concerned. If it goes, it's bye bye to the tourist industry and all the jobs. Jetstar and Virgin don't give a shit and at the first sign of trouble will disappear.

The only people who'll benefit then are people like you living overseas who don't care about ordinary workers n Fiji, just all your boring crap about removing the regime. Why don't you all eff off and leave us to work things out without you and your blind stupidity.

So why call our Fiji airline Air Pacific? Is it because other wankers like Samoan PM gets free promotion by being a pacific island. Try telling Samoan and Togans rugby teams to call themselves pacific rugby teams instead...they will never do that because they are patriotic. Oh by the way the coach of the Fiji 7's team is from the Fiji Military and is doing well in his first series and he is not from the Samoan army or pacific army. In your face wankers! We patriotic Fijians are proud of that achievement.

Funny you should call these bloggers treasonous, when in fact Air Pathetic and Pfliger are the treasonous ones.
Pfliger brought in a piece of Legislation for the people of Fiji via his American lawyers.
He does not have the right to do that. Only the Fiji Parliament voted in by the people has the right to change or adjust Legislation.
So who is really the treasonous so and so culprit?
It is you, Pfliger and Air Pacific.
Open your eyes and learn to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong.
Proverbs 13:11 says "Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles.."

Air Pacific or Fiji Airways or Coup Coup Airways or whatever you want to call it will never succeed.
It will fail and go bankrupt under the present "fraudsters".

Fiji Airways sounds like an airline from the 1950's..Air Pacific is better and a renowned brand, what the hell is wrong with this ppl...

Anonymous said...

We have changed name from Fiji Airways to Air Pacific and now are back to Fiji Air, when every airline doing name change are moving on to new names and much more appealing names. Is this part of our so called effort of not recognizing our pacific neighbors, particularly Tonga, Samoa who are members of the Pacific Forum.
Air Pacific is are more inclusive name, which does not only sell Fiji but the whole pacific as a total package destination.
We had grown to this name status over the years, but are now again narrowing down to a much more narrow name, and what happens if another airline suddenly claim that unique airline name, unless we are on the verge of selling that name for some short term cash flow.

If that is the case, then we are into some difficult times ahead.
Anyway, what does the roadmap say about name change? Not much I suppose, it is fragmented and lack long term business vision. Part of the 'tovolea mada' mentality.

Anonymous said...

Hope the new name comes with better looking, better trained and well dressed attendants.
And man, no lousy soggy sandwiches. Talk of cost cutting wonder why they give you plastic knives and forks with a sandwich?? Waste of $100000 yearly.

INDIAN MAN said...

FIJIAN would have been a better name for the airline like HAWAIIAN is for the Hawaiian airline....but hey its not the management but the fat ugly females on board that make that airline a bad experience to fly with. The Fijian girls are always rude to indian passengers and their hygiene is somewhat undesirable. This is the work of one TUTE COOPER who used to eliminate the indian girls from being part of the cabin scene. All major carriers are after PRETTY ,YOUNG AND DEMURE cabin attendants not fat ,filthy and ugly ones.Good luck Pflieger and friends for the change of the old racist guard. Just take a look at the flight crew and you won't find many Indian pilots there either because of this same woman Tute Cooper and one Matareti Tuisue who was the former Manager flight Operations. He left and installed his nephew as the chief pilot.Get rid of all this kaisi old guard and the airline will be a force to be reckoned with.SOW NOW SO THAT YOU MAY REAP SOON. Get rid of the old racist guards.
AMEN

Hello, Remember the days when the national carrier was making record profits under the brand of 'air pacific'. The branding was well known then. It was this 'coup' mentality that killed the tourist traffic from as far as Europe and Japan. It is not because 'air pacific' is not known. It is only the Americans that do not know air pacific because the Americans do not believe that there is a world out there beyond their east coast and west coast. Pflicker is now experimenting with air pacific and with no strategy in mind. He lacks experience and the expertise.

Anon 12:07 Air Pacific made a profit in 2006. That was the last year she ever made a profit.

In 2007 these people who you say are bringing Air Pacific back to its feet took over. And since they took over Air Pacific has made losses and losses and bigger losses. Nothing but losses.

She also now has massive debt.

So who were the locals who created the losses ? Under local management Air pacific in fact made profits. Drysdale, then Pfielgers predecessor.

Fiji had a functioning domestic airline service. In fact there were three functioning domestic airlines as at December 2006.

The smart ass not should have left the Branding as AIR PACIFIC but change the slogan to say " Proudly Fijian" or " Fiji's friendliest Air line" so on and use that to market Fiji.

Also use that millions in rebranding on new trained crew who are not only smart switched on with customer service but have a nice smile. Improve on image inside the aircraft by adding PR personal , improve entertainments and meal.

Build a loyal customer base is important strategy not in the middle of your game when you are losing your decide to quite and start all over again. This CEO will bring Air Pacific and Fiji's pride down not too far away.

I am a marketing guru in what I do and have build successful brands. It takes a long time to build a brand and brand loyalist. I think people of Fiji had the right to give their input in this name change as they are all proud Fijians. No just some members who were heavily influenced by CEO himself.

Know spend more money on rebranding and coming to par with new name awareness. Look at Virgin Airline. Richard made his branding and never looked back. His driven by customer service, quality product, sexy crew, new planes and great value deals.

Why could this CEO not FOCUS on these areas first?

He is comparing Fiji water's success and wants to mislead Air Pacific into like a Fiji waters plane now or what. MUST BE THE FIJI WATER MARKETING PEOPLE WORKING BEHIND THE CURTAIN. BOTH ARE AMERICANS.

GUESS WHAT...DAVID YOU NEED TO GO WORK UNDER SIR RICHARD BRANSON AND YOU MIGHT END UP HIS OFFICE BOY...DELIVERING MAILS. BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE YOU FIT IN REAL WORLD DUMP ASS.

Pilferer has succeeded in ruining a previously fine airline. FJ lost money 3 years ago because of bad hedging and GFC and new competition. It recovered nicely, planes were full and revenue hit records last year and would have done even better if Pilferer had not wasted it on his useless consultant buddies and lawyers. Think of air pacific paying for the labour decree! There went a cool million! And add Mike Moore, a bad smelling useless British consultant who makes no secret of his derisive attitude towards all Fijians to the list. We have been trying for 2 years now to figure out what he does other then daily reading our emails for subversive content, wasting our time in useless meetings, quacking nonsense and sleeping with Vikasni, our HR boss lady (what is wrong with her? The guy is a pig and whoremonger).
Pilferer and his gang are killing us and sucking FJ dry. Do they really think anyone will lend them money for the airbus? In the end it will be the taxpayers who hold the bag for the pilferers. And they will move on telling the world how hard and heroically they worked but alas the stupid Fijians.... Well, at least they can pound their chest for having given a new name to air pacific.

Anonymous 7:17 is really on to something. You see, the regime has decided that the name Fiji has lost its appeal, its caché. It has already changed the name from Republic of the Fiji Islands to the Republic of Fiji, but the new name still lacks the desired pizazz. Also, Khaiyum thinks that the reference to Fiji has too many indigenous connotations. Therefore, ASK is now putting the finishing touches on a new decree to change the name. It will no longer be Fiji but Lala Land.

Those who believe the regime will really allow free and fair elections -- bula, welcome to Lala Land.

I agree with some of your points.
Gen Y's and Gen X's are looking for cheap , no frills service.
You see them come in their droves on Virgin flights.
I travel with them and they don't make any fuss about having to pay for a coffee in-flight etc etc.
They have a diversity of electronic gadgets ( yes on Virgin you now pay for inflight entertainment) to play with etc and they are happy.
If Air Pacific doesn't "get with the programme" it will fail.

GenXs & GenYs dont believe in brand-loyalty anymore.RipCurl, Kodak etc etc can tell you that.
THese people will fly Jetstar, Tiger etc etc

Sorry to be so patronising but Air Pacific needs to look at what is working (Virgin Airlines) and copy it.

Secondly if you mistreat your people( employees) like you have done in the last few years , then you will fail.
You tell me how many companies mistreat their employees and succeed.
ZERO!

Changing the name is stupid.
The cost in changing the name , uniform, stationary, website, logos alone in Australia will be $2mil.

Think about it guys.
Changing a dead person's clothes won't stop the decay!

People are scared in flying with Air Pac because of the reputation of this military govt. fearing for their safety coz they are unpredictable and can't be trusted. To you hard working staffs of Air Pac,you are great, it's BAINI and ARSE are to be blamed. They fark it up and everything we use to treasure in Fiji.

My problem is there is no other airline flying between the US and Fiji, so to HNL or LAX I gotta fly with them. I really hope Air New Zealand comes back on the NAN/LAX run, please please please.

WELL at least Air Pacific doesn't have AKUILA SAVU at the helm or the same thing as the 80's would have happened a long time ago....BANKRUPTCY.
David and the management are doing a great job with the open skies competition. The former CEO's didn't have to worry about other airlines operating into Nadi and beyond. Those CEO's were protected hence they showed profit. Now it is a level playing field and everyone has to produce results and not wait for fiji government bailouts as in the past. The current venom against anything this government does is not about democracy but about the freeloading all the sinister employees of Air Pac were used to. Now there is no more freebies and the high societial lifestyle ! Great Job Air Pac and thank you for getting the very first brand new fully owned aircraft to Fiji and of course the Roll Royce engines to boot. BUT PLEASE KEEP AKUILA SAVU AT BARGE POLE LENGTH FROM HE AIRLINE...otherwise another bankruptcy.

@ Keep the Farting

Air Pacific is being bailed out by the Govt today. The FNPF bailout is part of that influx of funds from the Govt.

But even with the bailout they are still recording loss.

They are now finding it difficult because Fiji people are now choosing not to fly Air Pathetic, and the word gets around.

You won't have any sustainable airline without any clients. Keep that arrogant attitude going because all the Fiji people you kick out of management and flying have relatives who have relatives who now share amongst themselves why noone should fly Air Pathetic under this management.

Fiji people are now starting to boycott your Air Pathetic, and in these coming months, as your business sinks, you will realise why.

Fiji people do not like arrogant lying manipulating and thieving bastards.

Good point C4.5 NZ and Australian media are sanitising what's happening with this name change and what is happening in Fiji full stop. Guess like those who take the easiest way out they will go the way of the next new government. The way of the world

Air Pacific rebrands as Fiji Airways
Posted 16 May 2012, 16:12 AEST

A regional aviation analyst says the rebranding of Air Pacific to Fiji Airways will not necessarily save the airline from suffering profit losses.

Fiji's interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has announced the national airline will change its name to Fiji Airways next year to capitalise on the country's positive brand.

Air Pacific posted a loss of $US2 million in the 12 months to March 2011.

Independent aviation consultant Jim Bradfield has told Radio Australia that while the name change is appropriate, it may not save the brand.

"The brand and name change is not going to be the magic tonic but I certainly think it's appropriate that it ... changes its name because it reflects what the carrier actually is," he said.

"It will certainly help to focus people's mind on its role and I think when marketing it will certainly bring the name 'Fiji' right up front."

The airline, part-owned by Australian carrier Qantas, is hoping it will be better able to compete against low-cost airlines in the region.

But Mr Bradfield cautions against focusing too heavily on the lower end of the market.

"[It] is a relatively small market in a global sense, [so] the carrier needs to be able to not only look after the so-called budget traveller, but also must look after all of the other types of travel and ... also look at some of the more higher-yielding passengers," he said.

I and my family at last changed to Air NZ as we suffered financially from Air Pacific delays.

Anonymous said...

I changed airlines due to constant delay of air-pacific.Last time i flew air-pacific was in 2006 from Auckland to Fiji.We were delayed from 8am till 230pm and than 4pm.Due to crack in one of the planes' Window. That scared the heck out of me and from then on i either traveled by Air New Zealand or the more expensive Quantas?I'm sure that air-pacific can do better
and maybe the new CEO can guide it back to profitability? Let's hope they can and i'm kind of interested with their recent purchases of the Airbus and looking forward to give it a try
when ever they come out?

OBAMA does not want his Pilferer back. Says Fiji can keep its Kyumie too! Sad..

Anonymous said...

Obama did not hire or recommended David Pflieger for the job with Air Pacific. Furthermore David Pflieger is nothing in USA. It is just that here in Fiji people with pea brain think that people like Dave are someone that is high and mighty all over the world. Well, sorry to disappoint you people. That ain't the case. For your kind information, David Pflieger is just like any other Tom, Dick or Harry in USA.

So please do not drag Obama in this issue.

Please don't use President Obama's name in the blog.
For one he not racist like most of the bloggers on this site.
Secondly he supports gay rights(marriage) openly. Wonder what Rev Lasaro and his cronies will say to Obama if they had a meeting. Oh holy crap I forgot like always move the goalpost to suit your cause.
My president does care about the world where equality is the name of the game not racism and homophobia.
I'm a former citizen of Fiji but now a citizen of the US.
Obama's ancestors were slaves in the US but over the years and through some political changes when race was removed from the constitution of these great land Obama became the Chief Executive of the US.
But in Fiji when Chaudhry(not his fan) won the election the wheels started to turn to oust him.
Finally my son and daughter were born in the US they aspire to hold the highest office in this land because the color of their skin or their race won't be an issue.

Pilferer is a US citizen, so Obama should have him back. Why is he Pilfering in Fiji for??

...and whatz the big deal?? we are offering our very capable 'one-man-band-Fiji Govt-come-AG & Minister for just about everything in Fiji,UnHon. AS Kyumie, to OBAMA, for FREE!!!

Anonymous said...

Unlike Fiji USA does not tell its citizens if they may come or go any where. We have freedom of movement and speech. Furthermore Pfieger is just another citizen. He no one special or of any importance. He is only important to Fiji and the pea brains of Fiji.

Anonymous said...

Aree, where is you sense of humor?? you wannabe americano!!Please refrain from calling us 'pea-brains',even if we are, so be it!

But you still missing the point!! maybe you can help us ask OBAMA to have his pilferer back and there is more!! We are also giving OBAMA our 'pea-brained' AG baiyumie for FREE!!

Moce!

Obama's ancestors were not slaves. His mother was white, and his father was a visiting professor from Kenya.

Obama has plenty on his plate. War on terrorism, Afghan war, the economy and of course the election Fijian politics and situation is not even on his mind. But let me tell you people of Fiji if anyone harms a US national in Fiji than you will see what Obama will unleash on your Vanua.
And to I'taukeis Obama is not one of yours. He is way far ahead of your people. He praises people like Gandhi not people Rabuka and Speight.

As an iTaukei did you also relinquish your name from the vola ni kawa bula? If not why? Big deal mate-everyone who leaves Fiji to migrate has a choice for citizenship etc if you had gone an got you name taken off the vola ni kawa bula NOW that would be something to babble about! There are heapes of iTaukei that have joined the British army and given up their Fiji citizenship. By the way that doesn't stop you from coming back and living in Fiji if you were born here??!!!!

The regime is moving towards trying to merge ATS success with Air Pacs poor performance. They are working on a decree of taking away workers shareholding in ATS and stealing their cash by making David Pilfer CEO of a merged entity. That way they make ATS produce meals that cost so much but a lower cost to ATS. Already traitors are in place within poor ATS and not declaring the loyalty however are supplying information to the regime especially Khaiyum on how to dismantle the Worker Participation Concept that was responsible for the creation of that Company during the Mara administration. These wankers couldn't even start a business on their own steal hard earned revenue by workers to appease con artists like Dave Pilfer and BainiKhaiyum
