Fiji's UPP winds up and urges supporters to join SDL, FLP or NFP

Beddoes urging UPP supporters to join SDL, FLP of NFP.

The regime's latest decree has forced another political party to wind up.

The United Peoples Party's national executive committee announced a short time ago via a statement it has shut down the organisation as required by the political decree.

SDL, the last party elected as government, resolved last week to wind up, settling on Social Democractic Liberal Party as its new name.

The UPP statement says the party will not be re-established, but as part of its strategy of continued political representation for its members and supporters, the NEC is urging supporters and members to join one of the three other main political parties, namely the SDL, FLP or NFP as direct individual financial members.

The NEC says the move will be in keeping with the UPP’s core beliefs in promoting ‘multiracial politics’ in Fiji, a position they refused to compromise on following the 1987 coup and the end of the Alliance Party. It is a belief that has kept them together to the present day.

The statement, in part, is as follows:

By joining the other parties as direct members, the NEC said former UPP supporters will effectively help to alter the ‘DNA’ of these parties ethnic mix through a more natural process that in time would hopefully yield a more ‘multiracial’ structured political entity, which in turn would encourage a meaningful shift in policies and objectives to properly reflect its increasing multiracial membership.

Party President Mick Beddoes said he and the members of the NEC were truly grateful and appreciative of the loyalty and dedication of the members and supporters of the party over the many years.

In particular Beddoes said, he was humbled and thankful to his constituents for their confidence in him by electing him twice to Parliament in 2001 & 2006 and he hoped that his performance on their behalf was worthy of their support.

The NEC statement said that although the UPP was by comparison a small political party, its contribution in terms of Fiji’s national politics was equal to that of the major parties.

Since the post Alliance days the UPP and its members have stayed solidly behind the rule of law, working with other organizations to oppose the perpetrators of coups in Fiji as a means of altering our political direction.

This commitment and determination to stay on the side of the law and to do what is right and speak out without fear on matters of importance to the people and Fiji was appropriately reflected in the several Tebbutt Times leadership Polls published from 2003 to 2006 showing the UPP enjoying broad appeal from all segments and communities in Fiji of between 52% and 64%, which was considered to be ‘unique’.

The NEC said that the minority community as 5th & 6th generation descendants of the first settlers to Fiji that comprises more than 10 different ethnic communities will always have an important role to play in fostering improved relations among all of the people of Fiji and although the challenge ahead of us may seem insurmountable at times, we need only reflect on the risks and challenges that our forefathers faced as they journeyed to the unknown islands of Fiji in order to establish a place that we now all call home.

As their descendants, we must understand that our struggle for a free, fair, just, transparent and accountable democratically elected government can only come from the free will of the people and not from the barrel of a gun or the ongoing oppression of the people and no matter which party we individually or collectively join in the coming days and weeks, we must stay true to our core beliefs and do whatever we must to ensure that we put in place a system that allows us to freely and fairly, without fear or favor, elect a government of the people, for the people and by the people.

We must accept nothing less!

  1. Vinaka Mick,

To me you are proving to be a better leader than any of this lot in the regime, who are just bent on inventing every excuse in the book, just to enable them and their suckers to continue plundering away at the national treasury. Very mature and sensible decision at such difficult times.

  14. The General Electors were FIJI's biggest problem when it came to unity- THEY ALWAYS SIDED WITH ANYBODY THAT WOULD LEAVE OUT THE INDIANS.
How many halfcastes can pick up the bible and swear that they did NOT support Rabuka or Qarase of even Buta as long as INDIANs were left out?
I could NOT believe when 87 coup by Rabuka, the half castes had the biggest joy and smiles and even cheered as Indians were attacked.
The Generals just lost out their balance of power status BUT TO THEM INDIANS NOT GIVEN EQUAL STATUS IN FIJI WAS MORE IMPORTANT.!
Mr Beddoes says the UPP will be keeping with its beliefs in promoting multiracial politics in Fiji, a position they refused to compromise on following the 1987 coup and the end of the Alliance Party.WHAT FAR KEN NONSENSE!I challenge ANY half castes to pick up the bible (including Beddoes) ans claim they promoted multiracial politics! YES MULTI RACIAL POLITICS AS LONG AS INDIANS ARE NOT TREATED EQUAL CITIZENS!

  15. Ratu Mara a master politician always gave attention to this useless failure community just because they held lop sided 8 seats and the balance of power. In fact most of the Part Europeans thought Mara was favoring them just because they were something special-EUROPEANS!
They were always PART EUROPEANS AND NOT NEVER PART FIJIANS!
Thats why - whenver the discussion comes up who is FIJIAN, generals are the last people that should comment. THEY REJECTED THE WORD FIJIAN ALL THEIR LIVES!

  16. One thing anybody who had close friendship or relations with the VASU- one thing everybody would have noticed-They were simply anti indian to the core. Clearly they felt they are something superior to Kaidias although Kaidias were successful compared to the Vasu in business, education, docotrs, pharacists and all walks of life in Fiji.
Remember Speight was a pure halfcaste Vasu whose venom against Kaidia borne out of their jealousy of their success was on full display. This is one community that always tried to keep the two races apart

  18. I have always said this since 1987- The europeans and part europeans always backed anti indian rhetoric or action as best for Fiji. However mark my words- the last european or part european will long be gone before the last Indian leaves!
To back my theory- wheres Peter Stinson, TED beddoes or JAHKOI children? or LEO Smith or thousands who have gone overseas as they see no future with indians leaving- yet they back such actions!Ah koi joined coups but all children sent to NZ for better future although the INDIAN "threat"of becoming PM has gone!
NOW THEY HAVE WHAT THEY WANTED- INDIANS NEVER TO BE IN POWER - at the same time they see no future for their kids! IRONIC!Taukei future generations will suffer while the generals will enjoy lives in OZ/NZ. Bet you they will try their anti indian stuff there also as Indians success in OZ/NZ will get on their inferiority complex yet again

Mr Beddoes saying the UPP will be keeping with its beliefs in promoting multiracial politics in Fiji, a position they refused to compromise on following the 1987 coup and the end of the Alliance Party.
Generals took full advantage of Rabuka with his ANTI INDIAN

  21. So, out of the 16 registered parties in Fiji, after 14 february, only three will survive. SDL would emerge as a new party, social, democratic, liberal party, FLP and NFP.

Bainimarama's party backed by miliatry and muslims would be compete against SDL/FLP/NFP coalition.

  30. there is a lot of truth in what anonymous says about the general electors/part-europeans/kailomas being anti-indian and siding with political scoundrels to marginalise the indians in Fiji. the indians were regarded like the jews = as social lepers - and all the others ganged up against them.
But this was all a function of the old poliics - the politics of race and racism. Today the politics confronting the people of Fiji is a different kind . It is not Indian vs the rest, It is democracy vs dictatorship. I urge everyone to raise above your past politics, prejudice and traumatic experience and close rank to defeat the Fiji Military dictatorship.

It was none other than our current Prime Minister and the govt along with the military who brought this change. If we vote for the same old politicians we will go ack 6yrs to the race based politics again.
We need to change our mindset to take the country forward with hirig people with merits rather than race.

  63. To all who have seen it fit to vent their racism through this blog and call the kailoma, half castes, or whatever, names... I speak for myself when I say the truth of the matter is I am proud of who I am. I am proud to be the son of a man who served his time in the Fiji military during WWII - when the FMF was much respected - and I'm proud to have also served my country as a policeman. No amount of racist bullshit in this column can take that away. And no amount of racist bullshit can deny that we, the kailoma, the half-castes or whatever, have contributed significantly to this country just as every other person of whatever ethnicity has. The General Elector community is made up of kailoma, half-castes or whatever, the Melanesian community, the Tongans, the Samoans, the Tuvaluans -- in fact any other ethnic grouping which does not fall under the "Fijian" or "Indian" label. And, to that particular blogger who suggested all kailomas are totally anti-Indian, let me tell you - I went to school with Indian boys and girls, I played with and fought with and against Indian boys, I lived in the canefields with them, I worked with them and I supported what was generally an Indian Party - Siddiq Koya's Dove faction of the NFP. I also dated and respected Indian girls. So, please, take your hatred and soak it into your soul so that it burns you up and shows you up for the type of human being you are ... the lowest of the low. I am proud to be Part-European, just as I'm proud to be part-Fijian. The difference is, all official documentation recognise us as Part- Europeans or Others ... I have yet to see any documentation which says Part-Fijian. So take that fact and suck on it, you low-life. I have never supported Rabuka, nor have I ever supported George Speight or Frank Bainimarama. I have also never supported the overthrow of any government by means of military might. But I have and will continue to support a Fiji where we are treated as equals while still giving the i-Taukei the recognition they rightly deserve. And if that makes some people feel uncomfortable - I say to Hell with them .. I have as much right as anyone else in Fiji to call myself a Fiji citizen.

What I say goes, Mr Kaiyum is doing everything for me, and without him, we would have vanished in thin air, he has done a great job for Fiji, I will make him our prime minister, and I will be president, at the of this year, I will demote Rt Epeli Nailatikau, and probably throw him in jail, I know he hates me, and could set up my assasination, so I'll lock him up before he do it,

Let me tell the nation, I'm getting more than a million dollars a year put together, and Kaiyum is getting the same, because we are doing a great job, and the people loved us as leaders.

We will have tobget rid of all this old politicians, there is no way they can run this country like we did, and we will keep on helping the poor, they are our voters, wi'll no problem in winning if we go to election, thats why we create a lot of poor people in the country, so we can pretend we're helping them, and they can vote for us, but we don't need that, because we'll run the country anyway.

To those of you who hate what is going on in this country, just go with the flow, there is nothing much you can do, love me or hate, like it or not, Fiji is going in the right direction.

Will continue toorrow, so tune in. Talk as much as like, it will not change a thing. Moce Fiji.

FLP MPC used farmers for his own agenda whenever it suited him.Than he ripped them off and stacked the $2m in his account for him and his family )This person not to be trusted at any cost)

SDL the party was bent on it's stubborness to introduce racist policies.People were promoted on the basis of race rather than merit.A country wont progress on these exteremist policies.Than the leader himself stole for his own and that of the elite's gain.

UPP..well it doesn't count anymore and probably never did.The leader could not even reolve the strike his workers had staged so how was he supposed to contribute anything positive to nation building.

Considerig these facts (and so much more which i have not mentioned) we really are in need of a new party which will carry on the road to progress like the current government is doing.Remember Rome was not built in a day.

But one can't escape the reality of it just as one can't escape the reality today that the Muslim "community" is siding with the Bainimarama coup of 2006. This is no to say there were no good Kailomas at the time of the Rabuka coup. Many decent right thinking Kailomas found the Rabuka coup abhorent and fought for the restoration of democracy then. The same can also be said about the Muslim "community". There are many decent law abiding Muslims who are no doubt ashamed by the conduct of its "community". The accusation is justified notwithstanding what righeous individual kailomas like Dennis Rounds says in His defence. He is not the sum total of the Kailoma "community"

Sorry I have not been in touch recently but I have been busy and did not have access to my internet. Our system has had some problems.

You are obviously aware of the events of the past few days and the misunderstandings and misinterpretations that seem to have arisen. You might like to publish this statement on your blogsite.

My comment on the flag was not intended to be disrespectful to Fiji, government or the PM. As reported, the rumour intended to be a humourous dig at the growing Chinese influence in Fiji about which I had previously expressed some concern to the PM. Some, including the PM, seem to have taken the letter as an insult and I again apologise if they have seen it as such. It was not my intention.

Also, unfortunately, my confidential letter to the Archbishop and a few close friends got into the hands of some anti-government bloggers who publicised it widely and made me appear to be anti-government.
Again some misrepresented my talk on Social Justice at the recent FTUC Conference as being involvement in the founding of a new political party. While I do support worker's unions, I had nothing to do with the founding of a new party. My views on the Church and politics can be found in my various articles - most recently in my recent booklet on "Social Justice in the Judeo-Christian Tradition" chapter 6.
Also I did not "seek asylum" at the Australian High Commission (as some have stated). I simply went and informed the High Commission of my situation and the misunderstandings which seem to have arisen.
As you know, for the last few years I have supported many of the good things government has been doing. However I have also offered my criticisms directly to the PM and I trust these have been helpful and positive.
I am grateful that the decision for me to leave Fiji has been revoked by the PM. I see Fiji as my home and I am committed to all the people I love and serve here. I continue to hope that a positive way forward for Fiji will be found and the vision originally proposed by the PM will become a reality.
You are welcome to publish the above as a clarification to the misinterpretations which seem to have emerged.
    Keep well and every blessing.
    Kevin Barr.

It is a fact that to move forward, we need to learn from our mistakes of the past. However, to dwell in the past and regurgitate one's vomit of pure hatred can well be likened to you burying your head in the sand to hide your identity because you're ashamed of your exposed exterior. If you want to conduct a debate on race politics, have the guts to identify yourself. I agree there are those Kailoma who supported past coups, - some are even supporting the current one. But to throw a blanket over all kailoma and label them as anti-Indian is not only dishonest but an indication of your lack of understanding of the system of racial politics that has beset this country from the time non i-Taukei arrived on these shores -- including from the time of my great-great-grandfather. It's also an indication of just how shallow your intelligence is, given that you are unable to appreciate that even within the "kailoma" society" there has been "discrimination" based on one's wealth and standing in society. You would do yourself and the rest of us a great favour if you were to offer suggestions on the way forward for ALL of us - irrespective of ethnicity. You would also do yourself a favour if you were to admit that the only way forward for us is a common objective - one Fiji, one people. But the road to that destination must be constructed by all of us - the citizens of Fiji - and not by a handful of people who appear to have lost their way over the last six years.
Once you begin to focus on how we can overcome our current political predicament, your contributions on this column might just then be Juluumbhaat. Until that happens, I'm afraid all you offer is "kali bhaat".

Why has a small country like Fiji had 4 coups in 4 decades? Why is it necessary for a small country like Fiji to be forever changing its constitution? Why is a small country like Fiji throwing up leaders who are taking the country backwards?
Please focus on these and don't give me the crap about focusing on "some of the positives things". As far as I am concerned the "positives" amount to nothing because 6 years after the so-called "clean up" takeover my home country is still under a military dictatorship. And that is bloody NEGATIVE! Finally can you tell me why are you being anonymous? ashamed to come out openly in public to state your position?

Like the Fijian ethno-nationalist the Kailomas too felt the Indians deserved what they got. Few Kailomas stood up to do what's right regardless of race. I have said and it's here on the record that this is not the time for old style race politics. we have a common enemy to fight and defeat - the fiji military dictatorship. everyone regardless of race who wants democracy to be restored must join forces. As for my contributions to move the country forward, I have done my bit and I have never hesitated to question laws which are draconian to say the least. In mentoring local journalists, I encourage them to know the boundaries in which they operate and to push those boundaries to the limits. Those who know me know I don't hesitate in drawing attention to the wrongs when I know it affects all of our people here in Fiji. I don't just blog on this site, I also do things in less visible environments. I don't know who you are and therefore cannot comment on your own contributions, positive or negative .. but I know where I stand, and thankfully there's people who know what it is that I do. So again, let me invite you to reveal yourself. If you don't then I suggest you retreat into that safety net you've created for yourself and suffocate on your obvious hatred for us kailomas. I may not speak for the kailoma as a collective group, but the fact of the matter is most kailoma in Fiji are blood relatives and when you belittle one, you belittle all. So, please put up or shut up!!!

Iam Indo, what this big deal about kai-loma being anti-indian. Some indians are anti-fijian and anti-kailoma anyway, and very clannish. The way some people go about as if indians are purer than pure and always innocent and the only victim.

As an Indo let me tell you my people can be quite racist too, but most simply are in denial or not introspective. There will be shock/horror if you tell them they are racist. But not all indos are like that, many are fair-minded.

No big deal if kailoma favour Fijians because they have blood ties, it's natural; it's not that indos are not biased, but many kailoma are very fair-minded regardless of blood ties, like dennis rounds, because most of us can't stand injustice or bullying, against our people and from our people; we will speak out against our blood of they victimise others; dakuvula and akuila speak out all the time.

Like dennis, I believe our indigenous brothers should be first among equals, but problems is they want to push indos right out sea, at least some of them do, they do not want to share, which is unfair because there is room for us all in this country God gave to all its citizens, regardless of race.

No I don't hate kailomas. I just tried to clarify the point made by another blogger who highlighed the anti -Indian attitude of the kailomas at the time of the Rabuka coup. That blogger was right. The Kailomas gave their tacit approval to the scapegoating and the marginalisation of the Indians. Your loud and agressive denials can't alter that fact.
I am never on the side of my blood relatives or anybody. I am ONLY on the side of truth. And I know truth can be a bitter pill for some.
But Dennis let us not detract from focusing on the more important business of bringing the military regime to an end for the good of all the people of Fiji.If I revealed my identity you would know how much I have fought for the restoration of democracy in fiji. But it's not important here.

WE NEED THE CREME DE LA CREME OF OUR SOCIETY TO SALVAGE OUR AILING ECONOMY. LET'S ALL VOTE SDL FOR NEXT ELECTION!!! SDL! SDL! SDL!

  112. Finally, some genuine and sensible discussion of race in Fiji -- thanks to C4.5, not the regime.

  113. Fr. Barr, my advice to you is to stop being a tool for the devil. By working with and on behalf of these traitors, and even defending and lauding them sometimes, you do the entire church a disservice. Stop communicating through the press -- very unseemly for a prelate -- and stop compromising with evil. Let your next communication with Bainimarama also be your last, and may it simply be a prayer of extreme unction.

I just laid bare the facts. If you don't like it. It's just too bad. It does no good to runaway from the facts. It's better to deal with it honestly and proceed from there.

  115. A lot of kailomas got it wrong at the time of the Rabuka coup. They know why and we the main targets and victims of that coup know why. it's that old colonial kaiviti-kaivalagi thing and the kailomas identified with that colonial mindset.
It is hoped the kailomas have learned to be more judicious and less racial so that they don't get it wrong this time round. But look at the number of kailomas supporting the Bainimarama dictatorship. why are they doing that? think about it.

  116. Well said, V for Vendetta.

    @ Anonymous 7.00a.m

I don't think Rabuka has said a word about that but I stand to be corrected. I understand from the recent press release that he's no longer interested in party politics. But has he said anything about his continuing IMMUNITY his military buddies have been carrying forward to cover his ass? NOT A SQUEAK! What does that tell you about the man?

  118. lol haha ha ha haha ha....Kailoma anti Indian...what the hell is that fool gulabjamun or juluuu jullluuu or whatever curry muncher dickhead who wipes his arse with his hands after taking a shit and eats and wanks with the same hand talking about. Take your paint can and go give yourself another arse wipe before you talk. Now that was a racist comment. Boo hooo hoo....Another frigging Indian playing the victim game. Every individual apart from those who carried out the acts of the coup in 1987, 2000 and 2006 were victiims of the coup. Race did not matter. All were and are victims of the coup which the people are still paying for today. Kai Loma has been victims since the day the Europeans arrived in Fiji and tried to eradicate the Fijian race like they did by mating with Fijian women and took their children from them, called them half kasi or caste or kai loma. They did not allow these children to breed with Fijians otherwise over time the Fijian genes would overtake the European genes. Now where did this idea come from. CASTE system - half caste...The only race in the world who has a caste system is the INDIAN RACE GULUBJAMUM OR ULLULALAL OR JULLUUUBA MAI CHORD. Thats where the idea of caste's came from and these poor children became known as half caste or kai loma. In fact 65% of the people of Fijians without realising are half caste. Nadroga, Lau and Yasawa including Rewa, Kadavu, Bau, Beqa, Lomaiviti, Taveuni and parts of Buca Bay including Bua have Tongan blood flowing through their veins. Parts of Lau and Yasawa have Samoan. There is Tokelau, Solomans, English, American Indian, Chinese, Italian, Indian, and who knows what other race bred with the Fijians. The Indians were kep segregated from Fijians and other races because of their caste system and religious beliefs but this barrier is now broken with many young Indian men and women marrying Fijian, Europeans, Chinese and other races other than their own and this will continue until eveyone is a bloody half caste of kailoma. What is in a race if we consider all to be humans. It is the religious, traditional and cultural beliefs that sets one against the other.

  128. Many kailoma welcomed Bainimarama coup because Qarase government was quite corrupt and ineffective. Coup weeded people like wannabe millionaires Foana Nemani Olota Rokovunisei who were helping themselves to FNPF loans.

We kailomas were not anti-Fijian, just anti-corruption, like anyone would be. Plenty anti-corruption kaiviti supported coup also.

Now this regime has become more corrupt than one before it, so we want to bring it down to.

    ReplyDelete
  129. As a I-Tauke from Tailevu Nthi im so greatful to my Kailoma brothers. This is fact people. More KAILOMA went to war to fight for fiji than the kaiviti and indian. What does that say about who Cares more for Fiji?
