Fiji Labour Party rubbishes claim it cheated to get numbers to register

The Fiji Labour Party is dismissing the claim representatives fraudently obtained signatures for the required re-registration.

A key source says they have 8673 signatures 'so why would we try and defraud?'

The source also says Wailiailai has 'always been an area of tension for NFP and FLP' , rejecting the claim of irregularity with the comment "It's nothing."

Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri has told Fiji news teams they are investigating claims of irregularity in Ba, but has not officially named FLP as the party in question, despite it being common knowledge.

Ba residents are reported to have claimed of being approached by elections clerks at their homes last week - election clerks who told the them they were gathering information for Government purposes.

The FICAC investigation has been confirmed by the elections acting Permanent Secretary, Mere Vuniwaqa, but as noted on this blog previously, the political decree introduced a month ago would be a minefield and is proving to be just that.

That being the case, the Ba investigation is not unexpected. The decree was designed to trip parties up.

Not only did they have to muster up five thousand members but make sure they were ethnically friendly and make sure two thousand of members came from the Central Division, 1,750 from the Western Division, 1,000 thousand from the North and 250 from the Eastern Division.

As well as that they also has to prove they have party offices up and running in these divisions and collect a dollar each from every member for the registration fees: provisions that not even the most utopian of countries are required to fulfil.

But there are more hoops ahead. The registrar is required to assess their applications and gets 14 days to post their intent to register, allowing the public a week to object.

The newly-named SDL, Social Democratic Liberal Party, will apply on Monday but all of the small parties, including Fiji First and one that was formed at the time of the farcical Constitution review process, will now be wound up for failing to apply for registration.

If the unthinkable happens and the FLP application is thrown out, then only NFP and SDL are likely to survive.

Information garnered by Coupfourpointfive shows FTUC's attempt to register and apply by the existing parties deadline has failed for lack of support.

As also noted previously, the so-called deadline for the Constituent Assembly has been deferred again with the regime now saying it needs to wait until all of the registration vetting of  has finished before it reveals who it has invited.

The current state of play is giving more and more weight to the suggestion the Constituent Assembly will be used to lever a path for Frank Bainimarama and army into legitimacy.

It really is laughable that the parties who said they represent the people of Fiji cannot even get 5000 signatures. It really shows that the old party system was a joke. If these parties cannot organise 5000 signatures and establish offices in each district, how can they say that they deserve to run a county!

If the SDL expect that they can just change the name but keep the same acronym I think they might also run into trouble when registering. Someone will just have to object to their registration on the basis that the acronym of this “new” party is the same as a recently disbanded party and this might confuse the public that they are the same party. Even though that is exactly what they are trying to do, by law they are two separate parties and the old one would be illegal under the current decree. So don’t be surprised if the acronym gets rejected.

Young people (18 - 30 yers old) are content with life in Fiji. Just see the niteclubs, Village cinemas, shopping malls etc.
Why would they protest?
There has to be reason to march and protest...!!!
And if you are happy with life (good entertainment and parties) then why protest.
Its the urbanites who will protest if they are unhappy..!!!
Forget about the rural dwellers...they only take directions from the Church.
Hence, if there is "food on the table"...no reason to protest...!!!

@Anon 12.59pm &1.14pm looks like the kiss ass supporters are at it again. The registration of the 5000 names gives the regime also the leverage to undermine this parties by visiting the party supporters and bribing them as well as threatening them with the barrel of a gun. The minefield that Vuniwaqa the wife of the dumb ass immigration regime bum sucker that she is talking about we all know where all the mines are we are not fooled nor the foreign countries. We see right through and through your dirty tactics and we will still lobby the foreign countries and organizations until all the regime members and its supporters and families are thrown in jail.Freedom and Liberty for Fiji!!!

Can 4.5 get its facts right,The FTUC has the required support but is not obligated to make any application for registration stipulated in the decree as it does not have an existing political party but is forming a new one which has no deadline for registration. please correct the article.

Who writes this crap. There was absolutely no requirement whatsoever for the parties to collect one $ from all those signing. The registration fee could have come from anywhere, it was peanuts.

What is laughable is that people are signing as 'supporters' of a political party without even knowing what that parties manifesto is for the promised election.

Perhaps an example of why choice is wasted on some.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps a good system would have been for any party or independent wanting to register they should have paid a very sizeable deposit.

If they had got over a certain percentage of overall votes their deposit would have been returned. If not, they lose it.

This system would deter the timewasters.

Mahen 'the chorwa' chaudhry said...

To anon 2:47pm:

It might be a regime ploy but unfortunately FLP and its High Command mahen chaudhry are totally discredited in the eyes of many people. FLP is known to have a greedily efficient fund-raising machinery overseen by none other than mahenwa. The party is now synonymous with clandestine financial dealings. We now know the party collected vast sums of money in the name of the poor and coup victims. Much of this money went into party coffers to further mahen's political career and fund his legal battles. And muh of the funds were diverted to mahen's secret bank account in Australia to line his pockets and feather his nest.

Some might see mahen as champion of the poor or Fiji ke robin hood. But the truth is that victims and the poor did not see much of the money raised in their name. the money was used to buy house for beta rajen in sydney, and to gift 50k to mahen's beti.

FLP knows its support has been affected by mahen siphoning off over $AUD2million from funds raised overseas. FLP is now throwing bones or 'haadti' at its supporters to get them to sign the dotted line - this is plausible and FICAC should investigate.

After all, mahen is a corrupt person who has corrupted the party.

Seriously, we should think more about registering as many political parties as we possibly could rope up.

It goes without saying that all this is a game of arithmetic....power by division...power by multiplication...power by addition!...uh...importantly, unless you have numbers...even if one from a minor party or independent ..no formula can be arithmetised!

Let’s do that ,once and for all we shall dilute the stronghold of major political parties from our political landscape. Many of these were probably the ancestors of the angry baby; "Coup Fiji"!

In our view, Fiji’s salvation may best be assured by scenario of a “mixed” coalition Government of political parties and coalition of Opposition side!

May just eradicate this daunting “ them against us” game and elevate ourselves to an all inclusive type of leadership with better scrutiny from our own cousins in a robust opposition side.

So..let the game begin!

Who knows?...we may just register a "Fijian Diaspora Coup Free Party"!!

The allegation of our sister Mrs Mere Vuniwaqa converting to another faith is preposterous!!
Come on!..I believe we’re all sane Fijian in this blog site.
What we probably should be concerned about right now is the trickling of Tamil Tigers Srilankan deserters and Taliban Afghan deserters seeking asylum across the Pacific Island nation. It seems they and their respective families and relatives in the West, in dire desperation, have studied hard to deduce which tranquil Pacific Island Nations are signatories to relevant UN covenants that may guarantee each of them some form of protect on arrival into their respective Immigration zone!
Remember the “migration sequence” during the Tongan Passport easy sales campaign?? Yep…just used as a stepping stone into the “West” like Australia, NZ, Canada ,US,UK etc..etc..
How else would these Afgan asylum seekers doubt our generosity. Most probably they’ve have had first hand experiences of our “Pacific smiles” from dealing with our boys and girls at the check point in their homeland. Both Fijian in the British Army and Private Security assignments.
..mmmm..we may have to open up Nukulau and Makogai all over again..or..community groups like the local Mosque may be mandated to look after these Asylum seekers…or..we may beg Australia to take them in as exchange for the hundred of Fijian in Australia Migration detention!
These asylum seeks and relatives are not stupid, you know!....in fact they have Government funded Lawyers in many jurisdiction to “assist” them settle…oh…and mega millions tax payers money to give them comfort!...now is probably Fiji turn to care for seekers of our tranquillity..

RABUKA : QARASE OPPOSED THE MY COUP IN 87 SO I WILL NOT SUPPORT SDL said...

“I cannot be joining or supporting the SDL … Mr Qarase, had spoken against me for what I did in 1987, so I did the right thing in rejecting them.”Former prime minister andFormer prime minister and Soqosoqo Vakavulewa ni Taukei (SVT) leader Sitiveni Rabuka, yesterday said he turned down an approach to join the planned Social Democratic Liberal Party (SDL) .
He denied reports on an anti-Government blogsite he had joined the new SDL, a reincarnation of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) party ousted from power in 2006.
The retired military commander and politician said: “I’m not joining any political party but I’ll vote.”
He said he would support the National Federation Party (NFP), with which his SVT party had at one stage worked.
He confirmed he was approached by the new SDL Party in their membership drive.
However, he told them that he would not join or support the SDL because its leader and former prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, was totally against the 1987 coup d’├ętat he carried out.
“I cannot be joining or supporting the SDL … Mr Qarase, had spoken against me for what I did in 1987, so I did the right thing in rejecting them.”
Another reason stemmed from the fact that many SDL members were former supporters of the SVT Government.
“When the SDL Party was formed, my party members turned their backs on me and joined the new political party. So why should I join or support a party that is made up of my enemies?”
But, what was more interesting was which party he would support: “If I’m going to support any political party it will be the National Federation Party (NFP).” Why?
He said the NFP, under the leadership of Jai Ram Reddy, and the United General Party (UGP) had joined in a coalition prior to the 1999 Election. Opposing the government-led coalition was the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), the Fiji Association Party (FAP) and the Party of National Unity (PANU).
The FLP won the elections in the1999 General Election and Mahendra Chaudhry was sworn-in as prime minister.
As for the Labour party, Mr Rabuka said he would not support them because its leader was a strong critic of his Government.
Mr Rabuka plans stay home and enjoy life with his grandchildren

NFP needs to recruit new Leadership. At the moment with Raman Singh, Attar, Pramod and Bhiman Prasad the party is doomed. None of this people have any thing to offer.

The party needs to restart their youth wing as well as get more women involved besides Attar's wife.

Who are the decision makers of the party? Attar and Pramod should butt out. They would be in violation of decree by being actively involved in decision making. Spineless Raman Singh was purposely elected so that Attar and Pramod could carry on from behind the doors. Would the proper authorities look into this.

Religious bodies to be mindful of noise level
Publish date/time: 17/02/2013 [13:10]

Freedom of worship should be practiced with responsibility.

Police Chief Operations Officer, ACP Rusiate Tudravu said people who are conducting their religious services in residential areas should be mindful of the noise level.

Tudravu added they have received a number of complaints on this matter.

There is an audio file attached to this story. Please login to listen.

He said people can be charged with contravention to public nuisance if these actions continue.

Interesting that you only mention the Muslim following.

Perhaps you are one of the lucky ones that do not have to put up with so called Christian organisations ringing their bells and beating their lali every hour or so throughout the day from 4:30 in the mornings to call their followers to worship.

You are no doubt also one of the lucky ones that has not had their eardrums split by some pretend Christian with a self inflated ego spewing their rubbish at 100 decibels at the annoyance of others throughout the day.

Be assured that both the Christian and Muslim practice are equally guilty of dissrespect to others with their noise.

“FLP denies fraud claim”

Fiji Times, Tevita Vuibau, Saturday, February 16, 2013

POLITICIAN Mahendra Chaudhry says he is not concerned with claims that his party — currently awaiting the outcome of their re-registration application — was buying signatures.

He made the comments after former Justice and Freedom Party general secretary Dildar Shah alleged that larger political parties applying for re-registration were paying people to sign their application.

“In fact, we have been hurt by these larger political parties,” he said.

“Our agents were working very hard and we received news that some parties were paying people off to sign their application,” he said.

“We have no solid proof but we did get the idea that there was a lot of dirty work going on in order to secure the signatures. Even I saw firsthand in Nausori, there was a page without a political party letterhead circulating and there were people signing it. So some of these people did not even know what was happening.”

However, Mr Chaudhry, who spoke to this newspaper yesterday in his personal capacity, said allegations were detracting from the hard work done and still left to do.

“I’m really not concerned with these allegations and I don’t want to waste my time. They are nothing new as far as I am concerned,” he said.

Mahenwa is not concerned that his party was buying signatures. He claims a lot of dirty work going on to secure voter signatures. He said, I don’t want to waste my time on the allegations.

This is mahen's way of conveniently avoiding issues and sweeping the dirt under carpet. if anyone does dirty dealing, it is FLP high command and dictator mahen who ignored the FLP executives nominees and nepotistically appointed his in-law, Sachida toilet cleaner as a senator.

When challenged about such issues, chorwa mahen will say i don't to waste my time on the allegations, like he did with his secret $2million australian bank account. The loot was from money raised in poor cane farmers' and coup victims' names.

mahen is a dirty dealer who has corrupted the FLP and he is capable of signature buying. this should be investigated along with his tax evasion charges,

Zimbabwe's Ex-President Convicted of Sodomy
By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr
Published: November 27, 1998
The Rev. Canaan Banana, the former President of Zimbabwe, was found guilty of sodomy today by a court in Harare and faces up to 22 years in jail.
The dock was empty, though, as the conviction was read. Mr. Banana, 62, apparently jumped bail last week and fled to Botswana, where he is said to have asked for political asylum and then gone into hiding.
Judge Godfrey Chidyausiku issued an arrest order; revoked Mr. Banana's bail, which included his deed to a mansion in Harare, and asked his lawyer to try to persuade him to return for sentencing on Dec. 10. Prosecutors are to seek extradition.
Mr. Banana, a Methodist minister, had denied all the charges, calling them ''a mortuary of pathological lies'' intended to destroy his chances of a political comeback.
He was convicted of 11 counts of sodomy, attempted sodomy and indecent assault, all stemming from incidents with young bodyguards, gardeners and cooks assigned to him when he was President, from 1980 to 1987. The charges grew out of the 1995 murder trial of a police inspector, Jefta Dube, who killed a colleague. Mr. Dube said the man had taunted him, calling him ''Banana's wife.''

Well to honest, I believe the man does not want to be involed with the SDL or FLP, because if they failled, he will be jailed for his role from the 1987 coup and beyond.

my point is this , leaders needed to be held accountable for what they did . starting from rabuka , in 1987, the failure of NBF , THE LOSS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS . PEOPLE WHO BENEFIT UNDER RABUKAS COUP INCLUDE MICXK BEDDOES, ESALA TELENI, TOMASI VAKATORA[ARTITTECT OF 1997 CONSTITUTION, RATU INOKE KUBUABOLA[CURRENT FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER,GANILAU FAMILY,ETC....
THEN CHAUDRY IN 1999 TO 2000. HE GAVE f$28000.00 to existing sugar cane farmers who's lease have expired and they cannot renew it . then F$10000.00 to new Fijian landowner farmers coming in to the sugarcane farming for the first time in there life. the coup happen and he get again 3million Fiji dollars deposit in aus and nz account.
then qarase came and with apisai tora the agriculture minister and assitant minister marieta rigamato, with LQ blue print created the agriculture scam.worth F$20 million.
then bainimarama today you can do the maths [ronin hood ] of fiji .

Editor,
The British State has spent $4.4 million on police security watch on WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange for the 8 months he has been holed up in the Ecuador Embassy in London.
And the malaysian State authorities detained and deported an Australian MP senator Nick Xenophon couple of days ago.
In today's world State security nets are spread very wide. Even an honourable member of parliament of a First World democracy can be rounded up as a "security risk".
It's quite strange to say the least!

What are possible names and varied demographics of Political Parties we could think of, herald support for and register to contest the up coming National Elections?

OK NFP, seems to be a Hindu dominated party of a few canefarmers, few indo-Fijian professional and the rest of the Fijian-south Indias in between.

FLP?..a few cane famer officials, a few unionist loyal to Chaudry legacy, a few Unionist and a bunch of unionized workers in between.

SDL..well they can not now claim mega support from the Methodist Church any more. So, even with relatively same acronym, the oppositions to SDL may keep taunting the full confusing name "Socialist Democratic Liberal" party..in it self confusing to the ordinary “Lewenivanua” of the old itaukei SDL cousin., proving it is NOT the old SDL any longer! The new party name sounds foreign to any ordinary village voter as if birthed in Russia or Belfast,,uh...not Raiwaqa!

Extreme itaukei Nationalist Party…EiNP (sounds like a sport drink)…some radical extreme itaukei who love the Old Testament invasion and domineering biblical stories may bring the red bowtie back from the closet!

A veiled “Muslim Party”…probably with elite professional as front, even a few itaukei “Christians” to gloss-over the appearances of national unity.lol..

The Polynesian Rotuman Party, The Micronesian Banaban Party, The Melanesian: New Hebrides –Solomon Island “ Party.

And just when we think the team are all lined up to star the election game..phew!!…enters the Christian Democratic Party or the Combine Pentecostal Parties..this would be the xfactor…they collectively have more numbers that the active church going Methodists, they have the money and most importantly they could summon loyalty probably not found in other Church circles…oh, and they are truly multiracial!!

Just imagine should All Nation from Lilac Cinema, Apostles from Nokonoko, CMF from Kalsa Road, AOG from Samabula and Robertson Rd, COC from Brown Street, New Methodist from Vodadrome, COC from Raiwai, Eternity from Walu Bay, and Evangelical cousins from New Life, Gospels Church, charismatic Catholics and Charismatic Methodists from Butt Street etc..and their other members in other Cities and Town centres’!

Phew!..oh boy..we are gonna have a very interesting game of arithmetic in the next National election!

Of course, question of allegiances would pop up, as primary purposes of pre election campaign is to affirm or cajole shift of allegiances.

Realistically, a majority of these Pentecostals/Evangelical Christians hold firm passionately to the ethos of hierarchy of allegiance that, should the situation demands; one is a Christian first and foremost and Citizen of the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, thenceafter a proud Fijian Citizen of a temporal “Kingdom” and his role “vakavanua”.

Members of our Fiji Military are members of these varied church denominations. A few in respective leadership circles of these Church.

That is the reason we concur with some suggestion for the Rear Admiral to visit these Church leaders, not summoning them to his tower, no!

A burly, tough and rugged drill sergeant or seasoned buck private and decorated Colonel may afford military allegiance to the Commander, but history has recorded that the hearts of many are swayed towards all they respectively tressure most!...and in many case, their military calling is not where all their eggs are!

Let the game begin!

Editor,
Should anybody be surprised to learn that Australian citizen Ben Zygier 'died in suspicious circumstances while in the [Israeli]State's custody " and that "his death was covered up by the Israeli authorities until the story was investigated by the ABC"?
That sort of thing happens. It happens here.
There was a time when we thought things like that only happened in a Stalinist State.
Now we know it also happens in democratic states.
Israel is a democracy where we are led to believe there is due process of justice and respect for human rights and human dignity
So what happened to all that in Ben Zygier's case?
Yes, his family deserve honest answers
They deserve justice.

For awhile, I thought we were finally to be spared from Semi Meo's sophomoric analyses and incoherent statements. I thought that just perhaps he'd finally recognised the lunacy of his faith in the 2014 elections and decided to absent himself rather than be mocked for his cowardice and hypocrisy by Nameless Cyber Bully. Yes, for a time I thought that we were finally free of his incessant and shameless self-promotion, his efforts to divert C4.5 readers from the main topic, and his pathetic apologies for the illegal regime.

Alas, twas not to be.

Welcome him back? Are you kidding me? He's like a case of syphilis that returns after a period of remission and leads to blindness and insanity.

As usual, Semi Meo is carrying water again for the regime. The regime wants nothing better than to disband, weaken or otherwise neutralise Fiji's political parties. So along comes Meo to try to explain why none of the parties deserves support. No doubt he'll come up with his own political platform from behind stall number three at the Brisbane mall.

Wow...and we all thought the battle to regain sanity and democracy in Fiji was against the Rear Admiral!

What did I do?? May I humbly ask to deserve all these cyber spew?..

.Phew! Thankfully the biblical adage of “reap what you sow” transcends society and is universal principle of cause and effect!

If you few block heads re-read my post would deduce I was only making attempt to lead blind and frightened bloggers away from the Bainimarama fear factor that has griped their daily living since 2006.

We say again; NOT ALL…..… serving Military personal would vote for a pro-Bainimarama political entity. Not all.

They will NOT feel guilty placing their vote to where their respective heart leads them to. Importantly, it will NOT diminish their allegiance to the Fiji Military Forces at all.

Hello..In the event the Rear Admiral puts his hand up to contest the National Election or elevated to President he ceases to be Commander.

Of course you doubt elections in September 2014!...In fact, the elections may be held this year, 2013.!

And you all think politics is screwed up.

Update: 2:46PM A 47-YEAR old man has been sentenced to four years behind bars for raping his seven-year old daughter several times between January 2011 and April 2012.

According to the High Court in Lautoka, the man took the victim to a nearby creek more than once under the pretext of fishing and sexually assaulted her.

The matter was reported to police in April 2012 after the victim narrated the story to one of her cousins, who in turn told the mother of the victim.

The man was also handed a non-parole period of three years

Amendments made to political parties decree
Publish date/time: 18/02/2013 [18:20]

Amendments have been made to the political parties decree of 2013.

Registrar of political parties Mere Vuniwaqa made the announcement this afternoon.

Vuniwaqa said one of the notable amendments in the decree relates to the role of the media.

Any media organization that does not comply with the decree shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding $50,000 or to a term of imprisonment of up to five years.

Vuniwaqa added that new registered parties will have to come up with new names and acronyms.

Vuniwaqa also said that they will refuse an application if it is found that the application was obtained through fraudulent.

The amended decree was effective from last Saturday.

LIKE I'VE SAID BEFORE, BAINIMARAMA IS NOT INTERESRTED IN DEMOCRACY OR ELECTION.

Now he wants the parties to come up with new names and acronyms.
HOW FARKED UP IS THAT?

This Rear Admiral Fuckface thinks we are idiots.
Please everyone this is not the time to organise election. We should think of ways of executing this idiot.

Lets start by burning Tappoos.

Nothing short of removing VB and ASK - Only option said...

Here we go again.......

We are doomed. People.

Fiji's government today amended its Political Parties Registration Decree 2013. While making the announcement, Registrar Mere Vuniwaqa said the amendment does not allow any parties wishing to register to have the same name, symbol acronym or abbreviation as a de-registered party and a proposed party that has submitted its application. “It does not make sense and it is mischievous that they try to adopt what other parties have done,” she said. The amendment to the decree stated that if any complaints is received with respect to an application of a proposed political party or where the Registrar believes that any information contained in any application is false or incorrect or has been obtained in an fraudulent manner, the Registrar shall then conduct an investigation, including requiring written statements from any individual or production of documents if she deems necessary. If the person fails to provide written documents required by the Registrar then the person is committing an offence and will be liable to conviction to a fine not more than $50,000. The amendment states that the Registrar can refuse an application for the registration of a political party if she is satisfied that the application contains any false information or is obtained in a fraudulent manner. The decree has also disallowed media organisations from reporting or calling a group of people or an organisation as a political party if the group is not registered yet with the Registrar and if they are caught they would be liable to a fine of not more than $50,000 or a jail term of not more than five years. The decree came into effect last Saturday.

Yep. Shifting the good ol goal-posts again they are. Who the eff is Vuniwaqa to dare decry what makes sense and is mischievous?

What does not make sense is how both she & her military husband have leap-frogged their way up the public service NOT on merit (she was a ways yet from a PS role).

She needs to take a good, long and hard look at herself in the mirror. If Vuniwaqa wants to slag off political parties for mischief making, she might want to turn the magnifying glass on her puppet masters. What a truly tragic waste of a good person Vuniwaqa has turned out to be. You too can prepare for Naboro madam.

Best news ever - Raqamate out of Hong Kong Sevens. This guy cannot tackle -Watch him against NZ & Samoa in Las Vegas Sevens - Useless.

Is a greedy gut and only paases the ball when he is in trouble. For Fiji the gameplan is simple throw the ball around to tire the physically bigger sides and do not get into the physical contact stuff as we are not strong enough.

Anyway Sir Khaiyum will still be in control in 2014 and beyond as the people of Fiji have no guts to stand up for their democratic rights and freedom.

One only has to look at Libya,Egypt and Syria to see the difference in the land of the brave and the land of the tamata lamusona, levu na vosa, bati da ga.
