Fiji Corrections Officers responsible for the horrific beating in controversial video

KOROVOU ESCAPEE: Iowane Benedito

They're not in uniform but a number of the men seen beating and torturing an escaped prisoner and the man accused of harbouring him, were Corrections Officers.

They were part of the task force team who captured Iowane Benedito, who escaped from Korovou Prison and who is seen in the back of a truck being bashed with wooden poles and a truncheon in a video shot during his drawn out recapture.

That video has been posted on Utube and Fiji police say they are investigating.

Benedito was one of four prisoners who eluded police late last year for 10 days before he was captured at Muslim League Park in Nabua - by a task force team and Fiji Corrections Officers.

The man accused of helping him avoid the manhunt, and who Corrections officers is seen setting a dog on in the video, was just 20 at the time and was unemployed.

Benedito escaped from Korovou on Sunday November 18 and was the last out of the four to be returned to custody

The Korovou break out followed that of the five prisoners from Naboro and took place during the day time.

The escape (as did Naboro) infuritated police and Corrections Officers, who mounted huge and vengeful missions to find and punish the escapees.

NABORO ESCAPEE: Qaraniqio.
About 10 wardens were guarding 362 convicted and remand inmates when the Korovou escape happened – a ratio of 36 prisoners to a warden.

Police Commissioner Ioane Naivalurua last year promised a report on the recapture of the Naboro prisoners, including Epeli Qaraniqio, after we revealed his leg had to be amputated after a beating at the hands of those who tracked him down.

Nothing has ever come of that promise of a report.

To say how disgusting, inhumane, shocking, ungodly, terrifying about the unjustified beatings would be an understatement!!
I just cannot for one moment and for the life of me IMAGINE and accept that our fellow fijians are capable of such brutality!
One does not, and cannot imagine inflicting such barbaric treatment on a dog say, leave alone a human being!!
Words cannot describe how the video has shaken me, a grandfather, to the very core of my inner being.
Watching the video, I cannot help but imagine that my son or grandchild is being beaten up.
I wonder how on earth these people [dishing out the punishment] can go to church every Sunday, asking for forgiveness knowing that they have beaten up God created human beings!
I pray that the Creator and Judge will judge these people for this and other unknown crimes and dish out his punishment accordingly!
To the families of those beaten, I pray that the good Lord will provide solace and comfort.
To the International Community, I also pray that you will all, both individually and collectively, take the action necessary to bring all this suffering , and more to a closure.

They deserved for what they did.

The current global viral spread of this shocking brutality video by the police/military has tought us something…that internet social media is very powerful and it is in the hands of ordinary citizens.

That individuals together, through social media can bring events in our country to international attention and create havoc with abusers of power like the Fiji dictator and his gang.

So this is a weapon we have found to be very effective……use it.

Pointer to all of us still in Fiji to click away with our cameras and mobiles to record all the misdeeds of the illegal Govt and send the pictures with commentaries and actual recordings of sounds by subjects overseas for global distribution.

Our friends overseas will then pass them on to Foreign Govts and media for global distribution and publicity.

So happy clicking all of us in Fiji. Take videos of abuses and everything wrong by officials in Fiji.

Take videos of public meetings and statements by officials then send them overseas for publicity.

Lets make life for EyeArse and FB very unconfortable indeed.

The evidence has been in the hands of the law enforcement departments for many hours now.

It should not take more than a few hours for those responsible for investigating this incident to know the names of every single person involved. Including those carrying out the crime and those abbeting it by standing by and letting it happen.

Tomorrow morning we will all be notified of the institutions they belong to and the names of all the accused, be advised of their suspension from duty and their being held in custody.

If this does not happen the world will want to know why.

anyone notice that the press conference was conducted by a junior police officer - the commissioner of police lamu sona has got gust to face international community in media.

A big laughable subject he is now as he was trying to bring his image to international level because C4.5 not all in the footage are prison officer - half of them are police officers.

Some of them related to commissioner wife who he brought back from suspension.

Prime Minister should take a good look now at who are around him as once told to him by Esala Teleni who said that he will be stabbed by this commissioner very soon in future - all the army camp knows this.

this video is not a minor matter - Prime Minister is now head of two international agencies - he has to stand in international arena and answer - cant hide now.

Pm you better change now or never - people have started to revolt from within the forces.

"Police said they had launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We want to stress from the outset that no-one should prejudice this investigation by speculating on what happened," police said in a statement.

"We need to formally establish the precise facts and we are determined to do so."

Fiji police criticised international reporting on the incident, saying that some of it had been wrong."
--------------------------------
Oh boy,

No one needs to speculate on what happened, it clearly shown on the video.

The precise facts are there on the video.

All that needs doing is determining who the culprits are you have the proof already of what they did. And as a hint theres a vehicle number, a record of who was doing the searching and faces that can be clearly seen.

Anonymous said...

and theres a very recogniseable trained dog with a handler, just how many of those are there in Fiji ?

Anonymous said...

several of the faces shown in the video can be easily identified.

C4.5 can you clear cut these and post them for people to identify.

Anonymous said...

Except the dog--they are all Hymn singing Bible carrying Sunday Christians!!---Shame on them !!---man's inhumanity to man.!

Anonymous said...

It's those culprits the 8 of them or whatever the number is who are responsible not the PM or AG. Some of you guys will shit or pee in your pants and blame the PM and AG by the way you going on. Did AG and PM dish out the beating or give out the orders? Of course not. So how does it look that itaukei beating up itaukei? You blaming Indians for all your misery but no Indians in the video clip. Taukei have to learn to be respectful of other races and not pretend to be Christians by going to church on Sundays. God has made them turn on each other by their bullshit Methodist Fijian ways. The Methodist church overseas doesn't do the bullshit done by Tuikilakila, Lasaro, kanailagi and the gang. Take a look at all those doing the beating and being beaten and they all Methodists.

Anonymous said...

C 4.5 ARE YOU SURE ABOUT YOUR FACTS?Who is guy in black t-shirt tortured in the back of the van?

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous 10:08 PM

I will agree with you that it is the 8 as you say that are fully responsoble for what they did. Even if they were ordered to do it by someone up high they had the choice not to.

But hopefully we can rely upon those at the top to ensure that by tomorrow they are all in custody. In fact they all should there by now with such clear visual evidence available.

This will go some way to show the people that all has not been lost by this incident and this behaviour will not be tolerated.

I await in anticipation.

Anonymous said...

Just listen to the questions being asked of the chap in black shirt - you moron - stop making out as if its a minor matter

Anonymous said...

Just forget religion, ethnicity and the state, but what was done to the prisnor was inhuman as well as not law and order, and you wanna know what a fact is"they beat the guy like an animal and he could have lost his life" yeah! but like they care, as long as he learns his lesson. The question i ask is "is this how you our elders want us your children to solve our problems when some ones does us wrong" for many years even centuries you have taught us not to solve our problems in pain and violence and to forgive those who hurt us. But all that was a lie after watching the vedio. I've learned that if anyone hurts me or goes against my will i should beat the hell out of him and make sure he does not walk again.

Anonymous said...

The people who did tortured the escapees are as bad as the escapees. when one act in self defence is charged as manslaughter. In this case it is evident that the officers are taking revenge because they have been pull out from their comfort zone. The scene is no differnt from the Guatmal Bay Prison where the muslim ssuspects are being prisoned by the American soldiers.
Are we sending our men and women to the war zones as peace keepers to become animals when they return home. This is a serious issue.

Thorough investigation now underway
Publish date/time: 05/03/2013 [17:56]

A thorough investigation is now underway in relation to a video that has been published on a number of internet websites showing two handcuffed men getting badly beaten up.

Police Spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the two men appear to be recaptured prisoners but he stressed that there should be no speculation.

Inspector Sokomuri said Police are focused on providing security to the people and the force has also said that some international reporting of the incident at this stage is wrong.

SOKOMURI IS THE SAME FARKING LYING BASTARD WHO TOLD US THAT THE LEG WAS AMPUTATED BECAUSE OF DIABETES!

FARKING LIAR.
WHY SHOULD WE BELIEVE HIM.

@Mark Manning… I really do not know what your English language primary teacher taught you..that is if you went to school at all to learn the English language like many of us in Fiji did.

But again, we are not surprised at all if you mis-read our previous posts over the years as probably like you many Caucasian Australians may lack simple ability to comprehend your mother tongue!

For your benefit only I will try to write in very very simple English. ( I may sound like a broken record in repeating myself here again!)

That said…let me proclaim this for the millionth time into your stupid face!..listen good!!...I DO NOT AND HAVE NEVER SUPPORTED THE REAR ADMIRAL AND HAVE NEVER SUPPORTED ANY COUP!! ALL ACTS OF SEDITION ARE IN BREACH OF THE LETTER AND SPIRIT OF THE CHRISTIAN HOLY WORD. I AM A CHRISTIAN!

These are illegal and unbiblical acts ; 1987 Coup by Major General and the Alliance Government, 1987 Against Rev Koroi at the Methodist Church, 2000 George Speight and his gang and the Rear Admiral , his Military Council and Aiyuz many Coup since December 2006!!!

What I do hope and support, like the majority of the Fiji Citizens, is a process to return to democratic Government and process the return the Military to Barracks.

We would like to believe, imperfect as it is, that the present readiness for elections in 2014 is at the moment the best option! It seems to be good enough as supported, even cautiously, by major Democracies.

For your information only, I have never personally met, spoke or even communicated in any form with the Rear Admiral or his deputy Prime Minister Aiyuz…never in my 56years on earth!

For your information only, I have never ever benefited from the Rear Admiral’s Government...never!!
Phew!..time wasted answering your stupid allegation…I thought you were smarter and more educated enough to refrain from making wild allegations!

Of course I abhor as I always have been the brutal, inhuman, unchristian act, and un-itaukei low down act depicting what we could term our darkest hour. Not only the Law, but family, Vanua and Church of our sons brutalized should take these thugs to task!!..TODAY!!

Now…Mark Manning..take your filthy foreign carcass and FO to your neck of the woods!!...and stay there!! You kaisi bakola!

mark manning said...

Thanks Semi, that clears up a lot of things, especially your prejudice and ability to judge others. But hang on, didn't your Father teach you "judge not lest yee be judged"?
I haven't read every single one of your posts, so wasn't sure just where exactly you stand, now I know in no uncertain terms. Vinaka, at least we agree in principle on most points. I will pray for your deliverance and your bondage in regards to your being so anti European. I wonder what your Dad would say if he heard you speaking that way. Inspector Sokomuri, please do not lie to us today.
We've had enough of your lies.

We knew you were lying when you said that prisoner lost his leg because of diabetes.
So please don't lie to us again. We are not little kids.
Remeber your office as "spokesman" you are representing the Fiji Police.

When you lie you just dragging the Police name in the shit.
Now the Public think that Police are shit.

So just speak the truth. Its easier.

If you continue to lie to us today, then I hope that you get the sack & then fark off back to your village.
I hope they kick you out from your village, because you've been lying to them too.
THEN HOPEFULLY YOU GET DIABETES AND LOSE BOTH farking LEGS because you deserve it.

Apart from all this there is a BIGGER CRIME goin on here ie Bainimarama committing TREASON.

WHAT THE FARK IS THE POLICE DOING ABOUT THAT?

HOW COME THE POLICE HAVE NOT PROSECUTED BAINIMARAMA.
IT IS NOW 6 YEARS AND WE ARE STILL WAITING.

He also ordered the murder of 6 people and has also personally assaulted people including women.

What the prisoners did is nothing compared to what Bainimarama did to the people of Fiji.
Bainimarama used the gun to intimidate the people and their representatives and stole the government and also stole money.

Few weeks ago he stole $1.4million and gave it to his wife to buy a house.

Why isn't the Police prosecuting him?

Last week he said he paid it back. THAT IS A FARKING LIE.
WE THE PUBLIC KNOW THAT.

So please don't lie to us again, because we've had enough of your BULLSHIT.

POLICE SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING and prosecute Bainimarama NOW!

If you don't then it just shows that the Police is corrupt and you are a pathetic human being.

For those of you anti Muslims in this blog site, what do you have to say now. Those are Methodists beating up Methodists. I don't like calling Methodists in Fiji Christians because they are not. They are traditional vakavanua vakatevoro type living people. They uphold the teachings of the vanua instead of Christian teachings. They say beer is bad but most talatala abuse yaqona like there is no tomorrow. They beat each other up like seen on the video. They are 90% of ou prisoners. They are not talatala but politicians. They make their congregation poor by making them fundraise and live in shacks in the village while they build concrete houses with electric fans etc for the talatala. They have the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases during the annual conference which shows the immoral activity that goes on during their meetings and grog sessions which lasts till morning in Farnival Park. So whi is the Taliban here? Not Kaiyum and other Muslims earning their living in their employment. Yes it is the very Fijian Methodist who have an organised orggy at Farnival park during their annual conference. The stats say it all.

The farken prisoners deserve what they get. They terrorise us and get VIP treatment in courts. They rape, murder and violently rob and expect to be taken to court all pampered up. They just got some of their own medicine. These guys beating them up know what they have continually done to people in Fiji. If they raped you sister, daughter, wife or mother than you will know why they deserve the beatings. They should have been shot instead. They violently resisted arrest and the Vedic only shows the part after they handcuffed them. They didn't want to give any info about others and those involved so they deserve what they got.

Rajend naidu, yes it's in Fiji times but wonder why they had to quote in the last line "international reporting on the incident was wrong"?

Meanwhile we have police in Australia bashing a person at the Mardi Gras parade. They too have commenced investigation. Lets see how the 2 incidents are dealt with. Interesting days ahead for both police force.

Some of those condoning the behaviour of this group of law enforcers are possibly those that were involved.

Thier pathetic reasonings for the violence and torture sound like the feeble excuses of someone that knows his days are numbered.

They are running scared and know that the authorities have no possible choice now but to show Fiji and the world that they will be dealt with. This has to be done for the authorities to save face.

How did you sleep last night ? Must be worrying to know that you, who thought you were so elite are just about to be made an example of and will end up in the same place as those you have treated so badly.

Sleep well, for now.

It is now time for the Church Leaders and Chiefs (if they still exists) to partition the present Government that enough is enough!!

Inhuman acts of brutality and thuggery should and must stopped!
Similarly, the Rear Admiral and his watch dog Aiyuz should now engage the Fiji community leader s collectively and brief them of the affairs of state.

Conversely, Church leaders and Chiefs should for once refrain from sneaking up individually to the Rear Admiral to offer support and/or beg for favors!
It is now time to work together for the common good!

We are not alone:

http://au.news.yahoo.com/nsw/latest/a/-/latest/16302915/nsw-police-accused-of-mardi-gras-brutality/

NSW police will investigate a video that appears to show an officer throwing a handcuffed, injured Mardi Gras reveller to the ground and standing on his back.
The four-minute video was purportedly recorded after the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade on Saturday, and was posted on YouTube on Monday.
It appears to show a young man with a head wound, apparently being taken into custody by several police officers.
The unknown man is seen crying and repeating that he "didn't do anything wrong".
A officer is then seen to throw the man, who has his hands cuffed behind his back, to the ground before standing with one foot on his back for at least 20 seconds.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said there would be an investigation.
"The NSW Police force is aware of the vision and an investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the incident," she told AAP on Wednesday.
The video does not capture the initial encounter between the young man and officers, but a woman interviewed in the blurry film says: "This (officer) here grabbed his throat and smashed his skull on the pavement."
Another woman is heard to say: "They just slammed his head. There's blood all over the ground."
Mardi Gras organisers said they had viewed the video late on Tuesday.
"This incident is quite distressing and our thoughts are with the individual, his family, friends and those that witnessed this," they said in a statement issued early on Wednesday.
State MP for Sydney, Alex Greenwich, will seek to meet Police Minister Mike Gallacher on Wednesday.
"There were thousands of police out working on Mardi Gras night and many of them did a great job, but this one incident was concerning," he told AAP.
The video came without any context, Mr Greenwich said, but at first viewing it was "extremely distressing".
Mr Greenwich said he was aware of at least one other incident involving allegations of undue force from police at the weekend event.
Prominent gay rights activist Bryn Hutchinson claimed he was thrown to the ground after he ignored police instructions not to cross a road.
The gay sister of federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, Christine Forster, said she could "barely watch" the video.
"Terrible to see such an incident when Mardi Gras is such a celebration of community," the local politician tweeted, under the hashtag #MardiGrasBrutality.
Ten thousand members and supporters of the gay community took part in the parade on Saturday night with thousands more flocking to the Oxford Street precinct to watch.
About 1000 extra officers patrolled the event.

Publish date/time: 06/03/2013 [08:03]
FIJI VILLAGE .COM
New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully is speaking with his Fijian counterpart Ratu Inke Kubuabola about the video.

According to TVNZ, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the footage was “very alarming”.

Key said they take it seriously and expect the Fijian authorities to deal with them appropriately and hold those people who have undertaken those beatings to account.

Key said it is this sort of thing they worry an awful lot about but the Foreign Minister is raising it with his counterpart.

I bet when these thugs that brutalized this two young boys will deny any involvements, even if they easily identified on camera, and can know who they are by their voices, and the clothes they were wearing, there is no way they'll voluntarily give themselves up, they'll be seeking their lawyers now,

The guy in a jeans shorts and kight blue and white shirt, he was the main intereogator, he was the one the light colored batton, who swore, kicked and the young boy in the pick up truck, he was again seen punching the other boy, I bet he is going to deny that he was even in it?

My advice to the police, identify and arrest this.man first, if convicted please lock him up with the very boys he tortured, because he was heard saying to the boy he was beating, have you seen my face, well look at it properly, so lock them up together, and see qhat the two boys will do to.him in return, they will hug and love him.

To the who kept on accusing these boys saying they deserved what they got from the police, may I ask one simple question to you mr, have these boys robbed you before they were caught, have they raped your daughter, sister or your wife? Or are writting you comments from St Giles?

If your answers in any question above is no, than I suggest you shut the fuck up, and start lloking at your back now, and do your best to protect your girls, because they will surely be raped just you are confessing.

Fiji is not run as a democracy but we are expected to believe that a police investigation into police brutality will be democractic???

Sokomuri yesterday the presser:

"The procedure of investigation we will follow is similar to those followed when complaints have been lodged against police officers in other jurisdictions such as Australia, South Africa, USA and New Zealand."

Editor,
We read in the regime mouthpiece newspaper the Fiji Sun (6/3)that "Democracy 101 will get Australia nowhere with Fiji". This is the opinion of the "veteran" (read retired) Australian academic who has got a new lease of academic life as "director of the Centre for International and Regional Affairs programme at the University of Fiji and another Australian Anthony Bergin who is a political scientiest specialising in security and military issues.
Now can these opinion makers tell us whether Democracy 101 is good for the people of Fiji? Are the people of Fiji entitled to have Democracy 101?
These two Australian opinion makers seem to think it is okay for Fiji to enroll in a different class somewhere to the north of Australia even though that enrollment is not based on the democratic will of the people of Fiji. It is the arbitrary agenda of the illegal power grabbers and the "hostage politics" they have been playing since their illegal takeover of the country in 2006.
The suggestion by the two writers that Australia should bend over backwards to appease and accommodate the Fiji Military Dictatorship regardless of its politics is morally bankrupt.
And pro-democracy people should treat it with the contempt it deserves.
sincerely,
rajend naidu

EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: Amnesty International is calling for an investigation into the bashing of two prisoners in Fiji by men who appear to be local police or military officers.

A video of the incident was released on Facebook and YouTube last night.

The Australian Government is attempting to verify the gruesome tape, and a warning that this story does contain some disturbing images.

John Stewart reports.

JOHN STEWART, REPORTER: A man in a back of a truck is handcuffed and beaten on the legs with a metal pole and wooden stick.

Nearby, another man, also handcuffed, is beaten in a field.

The beating continues for another nine minutes. The man in the truck is beaten on the heels, ankles and shins.

A dog is then set on the man in the field while his captors laugh.

The Fiji police today released a statement saying the two men are believed to be recaptured prisoners. The men beating the prisoners are wearing civilian clothing and the police will not confirm their identities.

Amnesty International is calling for an independent investigation into the incident and says the beating is consistent with other bashings conducted by the Fijian military.

GRANT BAYLDON, AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL, NZ: It certainly appears to show quite horrific abuse which Amnesty International is calling torture.

JOHN STEWART: The Fijian police say the incident will be closely examined.

ATUNAISA SOKOMURI, FIJI POLICE: A thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of this incident has been ordered. We want to stress from the outset that no-one shall prejudice this investigation by speculating on what happened. We need to formally establish the precise facts and we are determined to do so.

JOHN STEWART: Last year Amnesty International wrote an open letter to self-proclaimed prime minister Frank Bainimarama after five prisoners claimed they were tortured by the military.

GRANT BAYLDON: There are certainly a number of uninvestigated allegations, credible allegations of abuse and torture in Fiji which Amnesty International is deeply concerned about.

JOHN STEWART: In 2007 three men died after being taken into police and military custody. Critics of the regime want the United States to stop using Fijian soldiers as international peacekeepers.

RAJESH SINGH, FIJI DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM MOVEMENT: We cannot have these officers going overseas and seen as protectors of the law of the land and peacekeepers when they cannot keep peace and protect the people that they were entrusted to protect in Fiji.

JOHN STEWART: A spokesman for the Australian Foreign Minister said that Senator Bob Carr was seeking more information about the video.

"The Fiji police and government could not be reached for comment, but the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation said police had vowed to look into the matter."

Can someone tell me, since when did the iAG's younger brother and partner in crime Riyaz Khaiyum become the mouthpiece for the Fiji Police?? Riyaz is the regime-installed CEO of FBC.

If you are a tourist from Aust, NZ, USA, or what ever part of the world you're from, and planning to go to Fiji for a holiday, please take my advice and refrain from going, I'll tell you why?

One of the illegal regime's decree that says any one involve in any activities that go against the illegal government will be prosecuted and if found guilty, will spend life inprisonment.

They are the police and judge at the moment, the judicial system has been cripled and run by them, its up to them who they want to put to jail or not.

But before court, you would expect to be beaten like those two young boys.

So, please stay well ayway untill the country is back to normal and democracy restored.

When secondary school boys brawled in Suva, the iPolCom was there quick-time to personally address the situation, both in person and in the media: tv, radio, and print media.

But in these torture incidents that were happening UNDER HIS WATCH, not a sound from him! Shame. Shame. Shame.

Just watch,by next week, there'll be another military police parade and he'll be happily pinning tin medals on uniforms to thank them for their dirty work while he and his tight-knit cronies continue to rake in all the non-transparent fiscal benefits.

The release of the video footage of the brutal beatings is no coincidence... mark that!!

It is a very smart journalistic maneuver to take away everyone's focus and attention from the TALIBAN issue. It is working since everyone is now engrossed in it and the TALIBAN story has miraculously faded away into history.

Smart move by the MUSLIMS who run this government with Bai ... at least the focus is now to identify the perpetrators of the beatings... they have been made scapegoats to take away an embarrassing moment there for the MUSLIM community here in Fiji.

Don't you see who is rolling the dice?? The iTaukei is being shamed publicly whilst the MUSLIMS will sigh in relief!! whew ... thanks for that video ... whom amongst us made that move for its release??

Under this regime, there is no coincidence... its all a planned move.

Naupoto's evidence before Board of Inquiry

FINGER on violent operation"I was told that they were to be taken to Nukulau. I was informed on the 28th July. We were to make arrangements for their transportation. I tasked RFNS Kiro and also directed Lieutenant Commander Naqali to form a security team for the detainees. I was told that they were to be taken at 0400 hrs on 29th July. I directed LCDR Naqali not to show sympathy to them but to roughen them up. The detainees had their hands tied behind their back. I directed Naqali that they were to be held on deck rather than below decks (inside the ship). It is easier to sabotage the ship when you are inside rather than outside. I spoke to them when they were sitted on the forecastle and told them that "if you try anything you will die". I saw people punching them (detainees) but I did not stop them. I was in contact with Naqali throughout the operation and I was directing the operation from my office throughout. I told Naqali to call me when they handed over to the army personnel at Nukulau. The operation was codenamed Operation Lighthouse and the Operation Order was written and signed by myself. Everything that happened was done because I had directed LCDR Naqali to allow it to happen. The reason for my allowing those things to happen was a way of putting the security team on a psychologically higher platform than the detainees. It was better for them to be punched and sworn at rather than being shot because the people guarding them panicked. My task was to deliver them to Nukulau alive and that I did. I ask the Board [of Inquiry] that the information that is given to the Board today be safeguarded as it can be used against our families. If my actions are found to be wrong then I am prepared to face the consequences

Why do they escape? They committed crimes. For those crimes, they were sentenced time in prison - hopefully to reform and become a better person.

But they chose to attempt and escape punishment for their crimes while in prison. It's their choice. It's their lives.

Nobody is forcing anyone to be a criminal, go against societies norms, terrorize innocent people, escape from prison, etc

It's their choosing and at the end of the day, it's the criminals who put themselves in that type of situation.

Why don't they serve their sentences properly, come out of prison and actually become a good citizen and do something good for themselves, the country, the people ?

Even if that means picking garbage from the streets to make the place cleaner, so be it!

Everyone is just focusing on the brutality like fools without a mind.

Prison is a place to reform yourself. Not to run away from it trying to escape your punishment.

Now take it like a man because that decision is on one's self.
