|Aziz: on hand for coup leader who now wants to be legit|
He's been trotted out to pick up where the sickly Mosese Tikoitoga left off to keep the regime spin going.
Aziz has had it easy before now, being spared the more public moments of having to voice the ambitions of Frank Bainimarama, as Tikoitoga has had to.
But with Tikoitoga sidelined, Aziz, who was exposed on these pages as having supported the failed Roko Ului and Pita Driti plan to get rid of Bainimarama, is having to pay back the hand that feeds him.
Aziz has declared the RFMF's support for Bainimarama to "to keep his leadership,” endorsing the staged efforts to mount a political party and 'campaign' for the 2014 elections.
The chief of staff, who has also been exposed on these pages for having has hand in the till, insists Bainimarama has started a new political path and since 2006 has had to "attend to some sad issues from the past," including the broken promises of politicians.
Aziz has also had to allay fears over the regime plan to acquire land by fair or foul means telling the Fiji Sun: "Land is usually a controversial issue and past governments used it as a political tool to gain votes from the landowners."
He says Bainimarama has introduced reforms "on new favourable terms and conditions".
According to Aziz, the new political direction can only be carried forward 'Bainimarama and his Government.'
The United Front for Fiji Democracy says Aziz is engaging in wishful thinking and it will be the people who decides not the military.
The UFDF says Aziz's remarks reveals the regime's increasing fear of the likely outcome of the 2014 elections, once the people have the opportunity to cast their votes.
The group also points out that Aziz’s public endorsement for Bainimarama contradicts earlier statements by Tikoitoga the military will not support any political parties or person standing for the election and that any RFMF member would have to leave the military if they had political ambitions.
The UFDF asks: "So is the Commander going to resign now that he has declared his candidacy? Is Brig Aziz going to resign his commission for breaching an order by the Land Force Commander Tikoitoga in declaring the military’s support for a candidate who has announced his intention to contest the 2014 and is a military officer?
"Or is this just more about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing or another example of the regimes basic inability to operate within their own stated rules?"
Anyone who has read his thesis (see link and others below) will know that like most in the army, Aziz doesn't think for himself and has aligned his fortunes to that of his leader.
So while it's tactical to keep the pressure on the RFMF, the truth is the army was lost to the Fiji people a long time ago.
