Spin doctors suck up almost $1m of Fiji taxpayer's dollars

The rainmakers but where's the casino?.
The truth today about how much the regime is spending on spin doctors to cover its lies and corruption.

A look at taxpayers money being hoovered up by the global PPR company shows huge amounts of our hard earnt dollars going on travel and meals, cellphones, social networking sites, including Facebook and Tweets and six blogs, to promote the regime.

It's a mighty sweet deal for Qorvis, the Washington based company providing propaganda for countries with an agenda, when Fiji people are suffering from increasing poverty.

One of the biggest regime spins has been the casino deal with One Hundred Sands and the fancy launch in 2011. To date, there has been no casino with the illegal attorney general last month warning Larry Claunch that "if this deadline of starting construction in May is not adhered to, there would be consequences."

Information on Qorvis spending collated by blogger Discombobulatedbubu. (http://discombobulatedbubu.blogspot.com/)

Al Jazeera news (9/4, 3.30PM) informs us that the Pakistani Supreme Court has summoned former military coup leader and president Parvez Musharraf on a high treason charge.
People in Fiji should find this case interesting. We are told our own coup maker Frank Bainimarama followed the Pakistani/Parvez model.
Will he be following in the former military dictator's new footsteps - to court to face trial for carrying out a coup?

Breaking news!

Susan Kelly the pro vice chancellor of usp, hired in 2009 by the corrupt vice chancellor is now back in fiji and has reinstated her incompetent husband to a professorial position at the university. this has caused an outcry in 2011 when she appointed this unappointable husband of hers as a Fellow in the Institute of Governance which caused a huge furor by leading and senior staff of the institute like prof vijay naidu. at that time she convenienently disappered back to the usa claiming both her and her husband were sick and needed extended leave. guess what the university gave it which caused may eyebrows to raise.

now she is back and was at her usual antics of bullying hardworking local and particularly regional staff. this woman is a known anti-indigineous and does not hide her feelings. fijian and island staff work in fear of her for the risk of losing their jobs.

all will remember how this crook from australia conned the last university she was at and was doing the very things that is causing problems at the usp - appoiting her husband at ridiculous salaries for work he was unqualified for and bulldozing her way through.

this woman has married a nincompoop of a man and spares nothing to fleece any university she is at to make a firtune. this time, its the hardwarned taxpayer dollars of fiji and the region. staff at the university are fed up of this woman.

more can be found if you google Charles Drew University susan kelly

We USP staff are also fed up of coup vice-chancellor and illegal regime collaborator rajesh 'the gutless' chandra. Rajesh is famous at USP for his underhand and clandestine dealings, and favouritism of certain staff and cronies. This man is driving down standards at what was once a prestigious and respected university by relentlessly purging academic staff benefits and creating a huge and costly bureaucracy to make up for his incompetency.

He is making savings to curry up to regional governments and the regime. He is too stupid to realise that all the good people are leaving and students are suffering due lack of facilities. Everyone at USP knows their penny-pinching and selfishVC is there for himself only. This man is fooling everyone by making false and exaggerated claims on the USP website, which has become a shrine to this arrogant nincompoop. Somebody help USP before this man destroys it.

We learn from DW-Journal (9/4, 4.00PM) that the body of the Chilean poet and political dissident Pablo Neruda is to exhumed - 40 years later - to determine whether he was poisoned to death. Naruda died just 12 days after the September 1973 military coup which ousted socialist president Salvador Allende.Neruda was "likely to cause problems for the dictator Augusto Pinochet" because he was a communist and was "planning to go into exile to lead the opposition against the military regime". The official death certificate says Naruda died from postrate cancer. Very few people believe that. The Pinochet dictatorship we recall was notorious for "disappearing" opponents.
It is good that the evil the dictatorship did is not allowed to remain buried and forgotten.

Old soldier,

It is govt who guarantted the Air Pac loan not FNPF. In fact, all previous govts from alliance days guaranttee public entities/statutory corporation borrowings such as FEA, FSC, HA, Air Pac, FDB etc.

The govt also guaranteed the air pac loan from FNPF. Is this good. Yes, as it protects our savings.

Should govt guaranttee stat corp loans? Yes, so that they can borrow and borrow cheaply.

It is indeed a pity that some Americans are taking advantage of our mess now to take over our sugar, civil aviation, gaming, deepsea mining, etc. They can claim to be bringing Fiji benefits -- and in some cases they are -- but in too many cases the main beneficiaries of their business dealings are Bainimarama's cronies. The Yanks are wrong to be so involved.

On the other hand, though, some of our fellows would like nothing better than for the Yanks to bomb Delainabua or to mount a Manuel Noriega-like incursion into Fiji to rid us of our dictator. For them, the Yanks are wrong not to get more involved.

So the Americans are damned if they do and damned if they don't. That's the curse of global involvement.

Anon @ 3:50 might hate Americans, but a few of us with longer memories are still grateful to the Americans for protecting us during World War II. If it wasn't for the Americans fighting at places like Guadalcanal and the Coral Sea, we'd probably today be coolie labour for Greater Nippon.

We used to sense that the Americans were doing a lot behind the scenes to try to talk sense to this government, but now not so much. We wish they'd bring back their forthright statements of support for Fijian democracy.

Savenaca Vakiliwaliwa tells us in his letter (Fiji Times 10/4) that "Many Fijians want this current team leading our nation to continue building it up beyond next year's elections and the thought of breaking it down and starting over again with a new political party is currently not palatable".
Is it? Not palatable for whom? The military regime and the people who are benefiting from it through the lack of democratic accountability? Pray tell us who? We know the Fiji army's chief of staff Brigadier-General Mohammed Aziz is one of them. He has said so publicly
himself. There would be other top dogs in the Fiji army sharing that feeling. They have a lot to lose if the Military regime goes hence for them "the thought of breaking it down and starting all over again with a new political party" is indeed "not palatable". But do they add up to be "many Fijians"? How many? How does Vakaliwaliwa know there are "many Fijians" wanting the "current team leading our nation to continue"? Does he know that "team" was deemed to be illegal by the Fiji court of Appeal? Vakiliwaliwa obviously wants this illegal "team" to continue - for reasons best known to him. But the people of Fiji will ultimately decide who should be "leading our nation" by casting their vote in an election.
Change in political leadership of the country is an acceptable part of good democratic governance. Most people in Fiji accept that democratic principle so they will not find " a new political party" unpalatable. In fact most did not find the Qarase government unpalatable although it was a fairly lousy ruling party. We now know - courtesy of the Bainimarama coup - who all found it unpalatable. Many of them are now in the "team" referred to by Vakaliwaliwa.
Finally, Vakaliwaliwa wants us to "pray for God's will to prevail over our nation".
It would be nice if that happens.
Meantime it is the will of the Fiji Military that prevails over our nation.
And, I would contend many Fijians find THAT unpalatable!

Number One, since Graham Davis is now a "resident Fijian" he's not entitled to per diem and hotel accommodations. He just gets a healthy slice out of the FJD 40,000 that Qorvis charges monthly.

Number Two, don't confuse the actions of U.S. companies with those of the U.S. Government. U.S. companies will chase dollars wherever they can find them. The U.S. Government will welcome their profitability and protect their interests. That's its job. It exists to promote U.S. interests, not Fijian interests. That is not a betrayal. It no doubt continues to press for democratic change behind the scenes, though just how forcefully is no longer clear.

The democratic opposition would best leverage the Americans by enlisting the support of American organised labour against the union-busting tactics of the regime. We should also solicit the support of American celebrities to raise our profile and to mount more effective media pressure against the regime.

we read in the regime propaganda paper the Fiji Sun (10/4) under 'Be alert for liars' that "The prime minister commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, is cautioning members of the public to be aware of liars in the country" . He means "the old politicians". He is of course flogging a dead horse because six years after his "clean up" coup nobody is buying that bullshit anymore. Most people now know the REAL reason for his coup. It had very little to do with "the old politicians".
The coup was done to stop him being put in prison.
The illegal Prime Minister tells us " None of Fiji's previous constitutions has ever created such bodies [as the Human rights Commission and Accountability and Transparency Commission] to keep public officials, civil servants, and parliamentarians accountable and create transparency".
Now that is a lie.
Either the Commodore has not got around to reading any of the previous constitutions ( and of course he would not be alone in doing that) or he has not understood what is written in them.
But I can understand the reason for the Commodore praising his own self-serving draft constitution. It is like a mother praising its own baby regardless of its deformities.

FIJI AIR NADI-AUCK FLIGHT CANCELLED

A friend Auck Airport quaranteen worker reported Fiji Air A300 flight to Auck was cancelled today due to ENGINE TROUBLE. He said that either there was engine trouble or this was to cover their reputation for low passenger numbers .....which they had done at times.

So this airline has a bad reputation of lying to cover their arses... Auck airport workers have a negative attitude against this airline,

Either way, engine trouble or uneconomically low passenger numbers, this augers badly for Fiji National Provident Fund owners whose savings were defrauded to pay for the new aircraft.

C4.5 Carr reminds me of another Downunder politician, the National Party's shortlived Don Brash. Like Carr, Brash also had a wife from Asia, a lovely Singaporean lady. Brash had the habit of overdoing the Asian bit and getting caught nin media soundbites Do you know my wife is from Singapore? which kinda made him a bit of a laughing stock.

Margaret Thatcher has been accused by the Australian foreign minister of having held "unabashedly racist" views after he revealed that the late former British prime minister had warned him of the challenge posed by immigration from Asia.

Bob Carr, who served as premier of New South Wales between 1995 and 2005, said that Thatcher pleaded with him to ensure Sydney did not "end up like Fiji" where citizens of Indian heritage formed a majority until a coup in 1987.

Carr, whose wife is of Malaysian origin, spoke of his surprise at Thatcher's remarks. The senator told the Lateline programme on ABC TV: "I recall one conversation I had with her in her retirement where she said something that was unabashedly racist, where she warned Australia – talking to me with Helena [his wife] standing not far away – against Asian immigration, saying that if we allowed too much of it we'd see the natives of the land, the European settlers, overtaken by migrants."

Carr expressed astonishment when Thatcher drew an analogy with Fiji, where the Indo-Fijian community formed a majority of the population in 1970 when it achieved independence from Britain. The community, descendants of labourers who travelled to the former British colony to work on sugar plantations in the late 19th century, has fallen to just over 38% in the last two decades after a 1987 coup. In 2000 Mahendra Chaudhry, the first Indo-Fijian prime minister, was taken hostage in another coup.

Carr said: "I was astonished. Helena fortunately was out of earshot. I remember one thing she [Thatcher] said as part of that conversation. She said: 'You will end up like Fiji. I like Sydney but you can't allow the [Asian] migrants … to take over otherwise you will end up like Fiji where the Indian migrants have taken over."

I'm glad you cleared that point up ie that the US Govt exists solely to protect US interests overseas.

I guess that would explain why they invaded Iraq and killed 1.5 million innocent Iraqis, inorder to protect Halliburton et al & the US interest in Oil.

I guess the Iraqi people's interests never entered the equation.

It explains why US is trying to pick a fight with Iran for no good reason.

I guess with regards to Fiji, the US rhetoric about restoring Democracy is pretty much not worth the paper its written on.

We'd probably more likely to find Truth and Support from a whorehouse in Texas than from the US Government.

Thank you for clearing up that issue.

editor,
If what the Australian foreign minister Bob Carr says the former British PM Margaret Thatcher said to him about being careful to see Sydney did not" end up like Fiji where the Indian migrants have taken over" is true ( and I can't see why the good Senator should lie) then that goes a long way towards explaining why the British regime treated Dr Timoci Bavadra like dirt when the democratically elected PM of Fiji went to London to appeal for the restoration of his government which was ousted in a racist military coup in 1987. The then coup leader Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka's claimed with the Taukei Movement( his ideological backers) that the coup was conducted to protect the Fijians from being swamped by the Indians.
Many in the British political establishment and elsewhere had bought into this racist and spurious justification for the coup - and conveniently pigeon-holed their pledge to uphold democracy.
That remains a shameful chapter in their history.
And I dare say it looks pretty much like history is repeating itself given the impotent reaction to the curent military coup.

The Mataqali Nabaramai of Waiqanake Village, Rewa has approved the sale of a piece of their land for the Water Authority of Fiji to build a dam on, which will benefit thousands of people.

Water Authority of Fiji CEO Opetai Ravai said the 8,000 square meters of land where the dam will be situated will supply 4.2 megaliters of water per day, which will benefit the whole of Kalekana, and extend as far as the Naval Base at Kalokolevu.

Ravai said today they paid the Mataqali trustee the first payment of $161,250, and the remaining balance of $53,750 will be paid once the survey is completed and the survey plans approved.

The spokesperson of the Trustee Taniela Vueti said they are very happy with the compensation being paid to them which will be used to benefit the Mataqali Nabaramai.

So how far forward have the coups in the Central African Republic moved the country?
The news that "2 million children are at risk of hunger and disease" in CAR according to the UN gives a good indication(Aljazeera 10/4).
The coup makers in Fiji too are saying they are moving the country forward. Are they?
The news that Save the Children's Fund now has an expatriate chief gives an indication. It was previously headed by locals. Is that moving forward?
Perhaps some other positions like Commander of the RFMF and the Commissioner of Police and the Chief Justice should also be given over to expatriates - like in colonial times.
That would really be getting us "moving forward"!

Corruption at the Top.
A UN whistle-blower James Wasserstrom has won his court case for wrongful dismissal. He was kicked out of his UN job in Kosovo when he exposed the corruption in the organization. The judgement noted Wasserstrom's treatment by the UN was an apalling and shocking breach of its own UN Declaration of Human Rights.
Now if shit can happen at such top places it should surprise no-one if shit happens in shitty places where you have coups and the country becomes a banana republic with no regard for due process.
Right?

In his inauguration speech the elected President of Kenya said " a vibrant democracy must have a vibrant opposition.Kenya is such a democracy" (Aljazeera 10/4)
The Military Government in Fiji should pay special attention to what the Kenyan President said.
Wishing away the democratic opposition will NOT produce a "better Fiji" and "true democracy".
I need not tell you what it will produce. That is well known.

Regime collaborator and USP VC Rajesh Chandra's pathetic leadership said...

FROM A USP INSIDER:

True, USP's gutless 'salulu' VC rajesh chandra can't run USP. He is an intellectual midget with no balls to uphold academic principles. Just concerned about saving paisa to make himself look superficially good in front of regional al governments while academic standards in teaching and research goes down the gutter. Staff frustration is very high at every level.

Poor Rajesh does not how to articulate a vision, let alone achieve it, and can't even hold his management team together. He is unable to inspire confidence. A very poor leader at such an important institution. This is what happens when an unprincipled, self-serving and incapable lamusona is appointed to an important position.

All I know is you dont invest $200million dollars into a company (Air Pac/Fiji Airways ) that is not making money and has $1.4 BILLION debt.

That would be the height of Fiscal Irresponsibility... and guess what Bainisona and Aiyarse managed to reach it.

Not even Baiya selling from his Beancart at Rt Sukuna Park would indulge in this sort of madness. And he only went up to Class 4.

Ulukau ga na ulukau.

Guys the thing about USP, is, that it is a well executed plan to f-up all the good the school is striving for. The people we need to focus on is not the current vice but the very board members or whoever it was that appointed him, now lets back track a little bit and spot out the fuckers that picked rajesh in the first place. Rajesh was the perfect scapegoat, a very gentle/dumbfuck of a professor with no sense of leadership qualities/ very weak, too friendly, too soft - he actually fits the bill to being a puppet for the real asshole behind the scene (MAKE SENSE?)...

Vutuki meo,

Thanks for post.

Firstly you jumped the issue from your earlier post. It was on the reduced pension rate.

Now you are saying that FNPF should not have learnt to Air pac. You say its not making money. Check their audited accounts on their website. They do make money. Secondly, 2 german banks that specialise in air craft financing has lent more money to Air Pac than FNPF. Also at lower interest rate. They are experts and have done proper due diligence.

I am not a coup supporter but definately don't support mis-leading and half truths.

Vutuki Meo, if that FJD 200 million was your money, of course you wouldn't invest it in Air Pacific But what if this were not your money; it was somebody else's? And suppose you're politically unaccountable. And suppose you're getting perks and kickbacks if the deal pushes through?

From the regime perspective, the deal makes perfect sense.

Anonymous 4:20 PM, what you say is true, but before we cast stones against the United States, let's consider the fact that we live in a glass house. Fiji, too, has a history of supporting dictators, from the chiefs to Rabuka to Bainimarama. We can't expect the United States, Australia, etc. to act against our dictator when we won't, either.

@Vutuki Meo 8.08pm. Agree with you a nd now the air bus is already showing defects and I hear it got grounded in Auckland recently.

@anonymous 9:47 Any business that has more expenses or than income and assets will go into insolvency.
It doesn't matter whether you are operating a Beancart at Rt Sukuna Pk or you Flying aeroplanes.

The 3 BIGGEST Banks in America that deal in TRILLIONS of dollars found this out the hard way in 2009.
And the American people had to donate money for these companies to be rescued.

Secondly you mentioned the German Banks. You are right, they lent more than FNPF.
So whose debt do you think we'll get paid first, the bank or FNPF?

I don't think FNPF will get paid it's interest.
Knowing these clowns I know exactly what they are going to do.
They will pay the people of Fiji with IOU's.

This is the problem when illegal clowns try to run a government.

Basically their modus operandi
is: "TO FOOL the PEOPLE WITH DELUSIONS OF LUXURY WHILE THEY RAID THE TREASURY AND STEAL AS MUCH AS THEY CAN OF THE PEOPLE'S MONEY"

I feel so disappointed that the church, which is supposed to be at the forefront of social-justice cannot see this.

DEMOCRACY IS NOT PERFECT but it is a million times better than what we are in now.

The CRIMINAL Bainimarama has so fucked up this country, we have gone backwards 20 years.

UNFORTUNATELY THE CLOWNS CANNOT SEE THIS.
Like I've said before, they are lost in their own delusions.
They say things like "Cant you see all the developments we've made."
First of all the developments thy make is nothing compared to what a legal government would do.
Secondly, there is SO MUCH HIDDEN COST which they refuse to acknowledge, because basically they are imbeciles.

The hidden cost are social cost and have already shown themselves eg Increased Suicide in young people.
This happens when their parents are suddenly sacked by the hundreds , for no good reason. Therefore the child's education suffers. Where to get money to buy food and all the repercussions that follow from this....

These are the costs that does not enter the brains of these clowns.
There is so much more... but I will bore you to death.

Suffice to say that when I say that Bainimarama's actions have directly contributed to Increased crime; Increased Rape, Increased Murder and Increased Suicide and Child sexual molestations, I AM SPEAKING THE TRUTH.

My wish is that the Church would open its eyes and see it and go out there and march and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Vutuli Meo,

Where did you get the info that Air pac has more expenses than income. Pls get your facts right.

Secondly, do you know that FNPF debt is serviced on time and some have been pre-paid as it makes sense to use funds from the offshore loan with low interest to pay FNPF with high interest.

I guess you saw nothing wrong with FNPF putting more than than it should be in Momi and Natadola hotels under SDL.

Lastly, the problem with US banks was due to sub-prime loans. Air pacific is not a junk or sub-prime for the german banks to lend.

Finally let me thank you for being professional in your debate.

Anon 4:38,

You seem to be regurgitating the same crap that was fed to the media outlets. Otherwise if you know more about the airbus deal please do enlighten us. What was the interest offered by the european banks? Doesnt it strike you funny that the USA banks were offering only sub prime loans even with the govt guarantee? FYI "subprime refers to the credit quality of particular borrowers, who have weakened credit histories and greater risk of loan default than prime borrowers". Even to a simpleton like me something smells rotten in the land of denmark.

And on the topic of audited reports why hasnt Air Pacific made public its annual reports for the last few years?

And already the airbus is struck down with a mechanical problem as reported in the news.

Oh well, as long as some people are happy.

Vutuki Meo I agree with you on 1 thing. Where are the church leaders and what's their role. Let's analyse and see who are commiting rape, looting, etc. Majority is our own people. What is the role of chuch leaders in this. Irrespective of who is governing the country, the church leaders must set good example and tell their people on what is good and what is bad. I also think that we praents must set good examples for our kids. Lastly, I hope we stand up to all coups and not that against GCc or sdl

@Anonymous 7:47 PM

99% of people that commit crimes know and understand that it is wrong.

Unfortunately many of these people have been bought up through religions that brainwash them into beleiving that whatever wrong they do does not matter because they will be forgiven.

Perhaps the religious groups are not the best place to look at when trying to cure crime ?

Anton,

There is a big differenece in US govt giving a gurantee for its own people and loans given by US financial insitutions and in this case German banks lending to Air Pac.

Secondly, a small technical problem does not make airbus or Air pac's reputation collapse. The Boeing's dreamliner had a tech glich as well.

As I said before, the decision to buy the airbus was a good idea as the leased 747 are old bombs that are not fuel efficient and had a high maintenance cost. The previous board appinted by SDL had placed orders for boeing but boeing could not deliver its part of the bargain. Hence, the choice to go for airbus. Not a bad deal and am sure the old board would have done the same and you would have said what a fantastic buy. But because of your ills towards the IG, you rubbish everything.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ISLAM -RELIGION OF 'PEACE' said...

Islamic jihad is marked by extreme violence against Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and the imposition of Islamic imperialism and Arab suzerainty.

On the cultural genocide of the conquered people:

Islamic conquerors acted on destroying the culture of the conquered infidels. Converts of Islam hate their original culture, language, traditions, and civilisation. Islam completely destroys the link of the conquered-and-converted with their past.

Muslim invaders systematically advanced in India through war, terror, plunder and forced conversion. Islamic invaders diligently killed all the fighting Hindus, looted their temples and shrines, and enslaved the women and children.

Many of these enslaved Hindu children were raised as Muslim fighters for engaging in killing their Hindu ancestors. Muslim soldiers methodically raped the child bearing Hindu women, generally captured as war-booty.

These hapless Hindu women had no choice but to submit to Islam, and give birth to Muslim children. This profoundly affected the religious demographic in India (the same elsewhere) as Khan writes:

The growing Muslim population in India was to be maintained by the toiling of the vanquished Hindus, subjected to grinding taxes.
