Tui Macuata dead after a fishing trip

The body of the paramount chief of Macuata, Ratu Aisea Katonivere, has been found after a fishing trip.

The Tui Macuata went fishing yesterday at 2 o'clock with three men in a fibre glass boat. A search and rescue party was deployed at about  midday yesterday, following reports of men missing at sea.

Coup 4.5 has been told their boat capsized.

The three men will be taken to Labasa Police Station to have their statements taken about what happened at sea.

The body of the 58 year-old chief is at his home in Naduri but will be taken to Labasa hospital soon.

He is survived by his wife, Sera, and five children.

This is what happens to people who show no respect for the Vanua and their paramount Chief.

The curse of the Vanua will also get VB, Khaiyum & the Mataivalu Ni Solisona.

Khaiyum,VB & the Mataivalu Ni Solisona and all thier guns could not save this so called Chief who sold out his own people and race.

This dickhead had lost the respect of all rightthinking Fijians especially his own people.

May he rest in peace and may he make his own peace with God. Despite all that's being said above, Ratu Aisea was an advocate for preserving the environment - especially the fishing grounds - for future generations. We all have our political leanings, one way or the other. But when we die, let us be remembered not just for the bad but also for the good we did during our lifetime. The problem with curses is they often boomerang back into your face. Let God be the judge because, as mortals, we are biased one way or another. May Ratu Aisea be allowed to rest in peace.

the Ratu is wearing the same red shirt that his hero franky was wearing when franky was photographed with the two local pilots that cannot fly the airbus yet.

I heard them call for help-Deo
Publish date/time: 22/04/2013

This is what Labasa fisherman, Chandra Deo heard at about 2.45 Friday morning when he and a few others were fishing in the Macuata waters.

Deo told Fijivillage that they quickly switched off the radio and looked out to sea.

He confirmed that they saw Ratu Peni Vulaca and his nephew Vereniki calling for help.

However there was no sign of the late Tui Macuata, Ratu Aisea Katonivere who was with the two men.

Deo who is a fisherman from Siberia, Labasa said he asked the two men if there was anyone else with them but they could not speak at the time.

At about 2pm last Thursday, Ratu Aisea Katonivere, Ratu Peni Vulaca and Vereniki, went fishing in a fibre glass boat and were supposed to return on Friday morning.

The Tui Macuata's body was later found on Friday morning in the Macuata waters.

Wow @ comments... each to his own I guess. Can you imagine when the dictator and his close henchmen die, with the curses already flying into their faces while they're still living! People are so angry.

I don't know this chief personally. All we know are his pro-regime comments in the media, each to his own I guess. But what I do remember of him too is that he's done a great job protecting and sustaining the environment for their future generation. A commendable effort indeed.

However, in an article in the papers this a.m. I read that he has a special door that ONLY he uses (no one else), to enter the church in his village. Wow... since in God's presence he shares the same status as the poorest man in his district. Clearly, he was revered like a King but in the end, he died ALONE, cold and miserable, upon the great Cakaulevu reef. A reminder for all - that in the end, you leave this world ALONE to meet your maker, with only your soul - not even with your well-fed body, or your people, your chiefly status, your wealth, riches and what-not. May his soul RIP.

Why is he going to the funeral?
I thought he hated the chiefs & told them to piss off and go drink homebrew under the mango tree.
May be this is just tabetabe to the people of Macuata.
The people should look through the charade and tell him to piss off and go drink homebrew at the ivi tree in Kiuva.

I am a Fiji born mixed blood aka half caste living and working abroad. I grew up around the Tui Macuata and his extended family, while his Father was the then Tui Macuata. Ratu Aisea, like his father before him, was the kindest, nicest person you could ever meet. As in any country, there is never agreeance on anyones political choices or views. Tui Macuata had a right to his own choice/view. As in any country, royalty, dignitries and heiracy are treated with respect to the point of laying down red carpets and opening car doors as well as having their own door entries to certain venues. Why should Tui Macuata not have his own door entry to his church in his village? As in every country, everyone dies alone because everyone came into the world alone. Tui Macuata's death was a terrible, tragic event and Yes he died alone. But won't we all? At least he lived fully. He stood up for what he believed in and sadly, he made enemies and people jealous in the process. Tui Macuata should be applauded for his courage and strength to do what he thought was right. He was a Leader NOT a follower. Whether its good talk or bad talk being said now, its still talk which means he has left behind a legacy. Will we even get a mention when we die?? Good on you Ratu. I can just see you smiling. May you RIP.

@ BC...or Bahen Chod You want to be a freedom fighter than do something worthwhile to get us our freedom and democracy back. Stop whining over a dead person. That's it for Ratu...you cannot change or reverse whatever you think he has done wrong to you. @ Anon 11:59....that door wasn't only built for Ratu Aisea or during his reign as Tui Macuata. It was also used by the Tui Macuata before him. Its the same as the Vunivalu's seat in the church in Bau Island. Its full of dust and cobwebs till today. No one has sat in that seat since the passing away of Ratu George Cakobau. You must be a half cast with no tradition and culture or an alien. And to all those who have and are going to spew venom against the Late Tui Macuata only an advise to you...watch his funeral..who and what chiefs attend. Maybe your chief will attend too...I will give a list of all the chiefs that will attend and see what you say...

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has offered his condolences to the family of the late Tui Macuata, Ratu Aisea Katonivere and the people of his province.

In a statement, Bainimarama said the Government and the people of Fiji join the Vanua of Caumatalevu in the Macuata Province, in mourning the passing of its high chief, Na Turaga Nai Taukei Bolatagane Ratu Aisea.

He said Ratu Aisea played a fundamental role in the development of our nation in particular through government’s Northern Development Plan.

Bainimarama said his genuine concern for climate change saw him strongly advocate environmental concerns at both the community and national level.

He described Ratu Aisea as a gentleman in all sense of the word.

Bainimarama will attend the late chief’s funeral on Saturday.

@ 5.44 AM

Haha...no need to get so defensive over your chief. I'm now curious to know what is the traditional or cultural basis and its origins, for chiefs having special doors to enter and exit a church? Please elaborate.

I recall attending church service one early Sunday morning and took the space in the nearest pew I could spot from one of the many doors on the side of the church I had entered through. Well, lo and behold, in the middle of the service as we exchange peace offering in the form of a handshake, I turned to the person next to me and suddenly realised the tall man I was sitting right next to was no other than the late Tui Nayau, Rt. Mara and his late wife, Ro Lala. He was so humble and natural without any airs at all as he extended his hand to me. Yes, Fiji's first PM and late President had always entered the church through any of the doors opened to everyone and they sit in the middle of the congregation, so it's hard to figure out sometimes the who's-who sitting in church since there are "naturally" no distinctive marks to separate 'man from man' in the Lord's House of Prayer.

Anyway, please by all means post the famous "Who's Who" list if that will make you and your ilk feel important.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous 8.44 AM
the late Tui Nayau RtMara and his wife Ro Lala might have been "humble and natural without airs" in a church but outside he and his wife were imperial aristocrats who carried themselves as if they were naturally superior human beings. Don't let your personal opinion becloud an objective assessment of the late Tui Nayau, former PM and President.
Remember humility flew out the window when the man lost the 1987 elections and got Rabuka to do a coup to get back to power via the back door!!

Having a special door means some are not good enough to go through "this" door. You use the commoner's door.

Jesus was a commoner, born in an animal trough, who ate with prostitutes and sinners. If He went to that church, He'd be told to go through the commoner's door.

There is no where in the New Testament you can find where it says that you have to build special doors.

This is a bit of bullshit tradition invented by people who don't really know Jesus.
Goodness knows who or what they are worshipping.

Sad to see how far the church has strayed from the mark, and in the process cause many to stumble.
What a shame.

Revelation 2:5 says "Have a good look and see where you went wrong.Repent and trace your step backwards to where you strayed from and get back on the right track."

Get rid of that "special" door. It's supposed to be a church building, not a Burekalou.

Anonymous said...

If He came back I doubt very much Jesus would be going through any door into any church purporting to be a place of worship in His name!
recall His fury at the Temple of the Money exchangers! Today's church mostly the money making variety - especially the American evangelical mob!

@ Anon 8:44...which church was that..the Sacred Heart in Suva? Go to Tubou, Lakeba or Lomanikoro, Rewa or Somosomo, Taveuni. You will see it for yourself. Like I said...you are a half caste with no culture. And I will always stand by my chief because I have one..u don't.

@ BC aka Bahen Chod....you said "This is a bit of bullshit tradition invented by people who don't really know Jesus.
Goodness knows who or what they are worshipping." Are you implying that the members of the Methodist Church in Naduri are worshipping a demon or are they some sort of cult? You speak like the muslim cleric who gave the Easter Special treatment for the Christians not so long ago. To get rid of the church door...go to Naduri yourself and tell them to remove it..and we will see what happens.

It is very interesting to see the TRUTH,"Who Earn the people's respect as The Most High" between the 3 Pillars or our nation who will meet in the Tui Macuata's funeral, The Prime Minister (Government), The Paramount Chiefs( Vanua) and The Minister of Religion or Churches (Lotu). This IS where the "PRIDE" and "EGO" displayed itself openly that he is above all others and he needs special ATTENTION & RECOGNITION he which knowingly oversteps his traditional protocols and authority .

Chiefly Fijian Vanua protocols such as this funeral are very sensitive and scarey indeed and any wrong move may warrant another funeral.

Watch for those who wants to be the Main Boy or Main Actor who may stolen the show in a time like these for political reasons.

TV ONE AND FBC TV Please take your best shot and show it to us the TRUTH.

MAY THE TURAGA NA TUI MACUATA REST IN PEACE.We love you, Ratu.

Yes, if I were even PM, I would not for any reason at all try to change the date of funeral date of a High Chief of a Vanua.

But perhaps the Vanua of Macuata are aspiring to a special recognition from the illegitimate government that they have changed the date of the funeral.

From most of the late Rt Aisea's statements I gathered that he is pro regime and anti I-Taukei establishment for supporting the abolishment of the GCC. I do sympathise with his people and family on his demise. But my take on this is, the way he died is not normal and can be seen as a form of unnatural causes. It is too much of a coincidence. He did leave us some lessons though in some things he neglected. And that is to stay united and not to uphold anything that is wrong.

some questions:
how did the boat sink as weather was ok?
did plug come unstuck?
why no life jackets?
why were they sleeping?
unconfirmed reports that Labasa businessmen ply him with all sorts of hot stuff which he drinks on these fishing trips - were they drunk and fell asleep?
needs answers here so that we can decide whether its safer to dring homebrew under mango tree or to drink hotstuff overnight on out at sea???

@Anon 12:45

Why are you praying at a government function? We don't pay you to pray, we pay you to work.

Blery waste time civil service just want to have long church service and a big kana every time there is a new building opened or a bridge built.

Anyway, if they are following the model of secular state followed by most other secular societies... its fine to pray... just as long as the government is not pushing a particular brand of religion like the ex-police comish Taleni was doing.

hypocrites getting people to pray at government functions when the government is made of thugs. probably praying to get God to save their backside!

Keep your 'special doors' in your fake churches if you must. That's the problem with people like you confusing religion and some made-up, bullshit tradition of having special doors for the privileged through an accident of birth, in a church.

As a general comment, some of these so-called Fijian traditions need to be reviewed ASAP!

From the questions posed by anony 4.39pm, it looks like your chief was suddenly awoken while still in a drunken stupor on a sinking boat at Cakaulevu reef. Deal with that fact instead of being a racist swine!

LOLS.. @ the very confused anonymouse 7.40am.

Hypocrisy clearly runs in your blood. A lesson for you and your ilk: Teach your chiefs to wear life vests if they're going to indulge vakalialia in alcohol, get drunk as a skunk to the point of knocking themselves out on a boat out at sea. TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE. Bainimarama's advice was spot on, they should have stayed under a mango tree with the brew.

Anonymous said...

@ A..nuni..mosi 10:23am

It's a matter of choice if the chief's want to wear life jackets. You are the hypocrete. You wan't to demonize the methodist church and fijian traditions and at the same time you try to defend catholic traditions. It seems i may have hit a point in my last comment..becoz you tried to LOL it off

Anonymous said...

LOLS once again.. @ the very confused anonymouse 12.53.

Quit fishing for confirmation as the demonizing of those things you speak of is largely playing out in your confused head.

On your point that its a matter of choice, then: If you are a chief and you choose to be a totally irresponsible d!ckhead, by getting pissed out of your confused head out at sea, falling off to sleep, all without wearing a life jacket then so be it. Moce Jo.
