Canberra tit for tat puts Fiji critic back on Suva watch

Topples and is then toppled: Gillard and Rudd. pic Andrew Meares/EPA

The Fiji regime is about to cross paths again with the Australian minister it criticised as neglecting the Pacific, especially Suva.

Kevin Rudd has tonight been reinstalled as the leader of the Australian Labor Party after a leadership spill secured him 57 votes to Julia Gillard's 45.

Rudd was toppled by Gillard three years ago and became Foreign Affairs Minister but was damned by the military dictatorship as being unreasonable after he insisted there had to be evidence of 'real change' before Australia eased sanctions.

The regime rejected “Minister Rudd’s “wait and see” policy and what it said was 'Rudd's ever changing demands which seemed to reflect his inability to formulate a meaningful policy.'

Some water has certainly passed under the bridge in the last year but it is unlikely Rudd, who will be sworn in again as prime minister tomorrow, will have changed his position too much.

  1. don't expect much change in Canberra's current stance towards Suva but under Rudd there will certainly be more skepticism towards VB's stated elections plans than under gillard

  6. The problem with the Australian Labor Party is that there are too many chiefs, no pun intended.

  7. i totally agree with anon 12.53am

@ retards 1.34am you're a retard for thinking that Taukei want the military to govern for them. that may have been true in 87 but it's not true now.

you should take a look-see at ILO Convention 169 and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples that Fiji has signed. Fiji is obliged to guarantee Taukei participation in national politics if they so choose and guess what? they have been exercising that right even before the above 2 instruments came into being

The challenge for the Taukei is to view elections as not a contest for power between Taukei and Indians but a contest for whichever govt they think will do them better, I am optimistic that they will learn and that is not being like as you say a retard

  10. For those that follow Australian politics...Mr Rudd can be compared to the weather in Suva...very unpredictable..today he says something...tomorrow his allegiance changes....thats why he was removed from power three years ago.....he does things to suit his own back...not a great leader to look up to the region...far out...why should we bother about his stand on Fiji..already he is an aethist, supports gay marriage and many more controversial bills ready to be passed....Australia's foreign policy in the Pacific is getting a battering from its closest friend - the US...because of their foreign policy stand towards Fiji, Fiji has gone to China and the worlds superpower is worried, because Fiji is the center or the hub of the Pacific and important strategically for military purposes....

  14. Fiji not only needs to do the right thing by its people but start being diplomatic as ACTU is being but that calls for it to think about the people first for a change:

ACTU welcomes resolution of the Labor leadership and calls for unity; acknowledges contribution of Julia Gillard

    Published: 26/06/2013
The ACTU welcomes the resolution of the Labor leadership and wishes to congratulate Kevin Rudd on becoming leader of the Parliamentary Labor Party.

The ACTU also wishes to acknowledge and pay tribute to Julia Gillard, who as Prime Minister delivered much for working people.

Australians will remember her Prime Ministership for the key reforms it delivered, including a comprehensive paid parental leave scheme, equal pay for women working in our social and community sector, a national disability insurance scheme, a better retirement for working Australians through increased superannuation, safer roads for our truck drivers and the community, the protection of penalty rates, and historic action on climate change which protected jobs and invested in industries for the future.

Australia has had a very good government for the past 6 years, delivering excellent policies for working people.

On behalf of nearly 2 million union members, the ACTU now calls on the whole labour movement to unify behind a campaign to ensure that Tony Abbott is not elected on his stated policies of bringing back individual contracts, changing the Fair Work Act in the interests of business, abolishing the increase to superannuation, and his lack of support for Australian jobs.

Kevin Rudd was right when he said earlier tonight that many Australians are fearful that the Abbott Opposition would attack their penalty rates and conditions at work.

We look forward to working together with the Labor Government to fight to protect Australian working families from a potential Liberal

  15. Congratulations to Kevin Rudd. Fiji has a lot to learn from this Australian experience - where in differing we do not have to use the gun for coups nor do we have to stab each others backs as anonymous bloggers.

  18. editor,
With Kevin Rudd's return to power another leadership change has taken place in Australian politics without any involvement of the Australian military. I suppose that is the difference between how things are done in a mature democracy and a banana republic.
Australians have good reason to be proud of their democratic system of governance notwithstanding its flaws.

    Fiji on Rudd’s appointment
    13:29 Today

    Taken from/By: Google
    Report by: Roland Koroi
Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says it’s too early to comment on whether Fiji can open new doors for dialogue with Australia, following Kevin Rudd’s shock return to lead the Labor party yesterday.
Rudd ousted Australian Prime Minister Julian Gillard in a leadership ballot for the Labor party in Canberra yesterday.
Sayed-Khaiyum says it’s obvious that Australia is in some form of political limbo and they are going through their own political machinations.
He says it’s too early to comment when asked whether Rudd’s appointment could become new grounds for dialogue with our Pacific neighbors.
Since 2006 relations between Australia and Fiji has been strained due to their condemnation of the military takeover.
In 2009 Fiji expelled Australia’s High Commissioner and Australia responded by doing the same.

  21. Bainimarama said he did the Coup to clean up Corruption.
And people including Academics and Clergyman ( eg Mataca & Father Barr) fell for it.

Australia shows us how to change leaders and governments but Bainimarama showed his way.

The difference is Bainimarama has not cleaned up any Corruption but has now actually made it worse and he himself is the ring -leader of corruption.

And the people who believed this dickhead have shown themselves to be real idiots.

THEY SAY THAT STUPIDITY IS TO KEEP DOING THE SAME THING AND EXPECTING THE SAME RESULT.
    DUHhhhh!

So its a bit stupid for us to expect Bainimarama to suddenly start doing the right thing in 2014.

SO I SAY: FARK HIM; FARK HIS ARMY.
EVERYBODY GET READY TO REVOLT IN 2014
YES FIJIAN INDIAN MEN WOMEN CHILDREN, ALL GET READY TO REVOLT IN 2014.

  33. Dream on, Fiji is moving forward with or without you and no change in the Aust govt can change anything. Gillard, Rudd or whichever dickhead comes next, Fiji doesn't need your f$@#$#%ing opinion on how to run our country.

And to all liumuri bast$%^#@^ds here today, get a life. Fijians are no longer gullible as you think they are. Bai has brought developments and change. It may be slow but we'll get there. Fiji doesn't need your superimposed westminister democratic system, it can have its own tailor made democracy that suits its cultural and religious demographics.

Talk about superimposed systems -- what else do you think Bainimarama is doing except imposing his own system, just to avoid justice for his crimes?

Think you don't need my opinion about how to run the country? Well, welcome to the New Fiji where that 'foreign flower' called nazi fascism is the new form of government, and Der Fuehrer's opinion is the only one that counts. Which means yours isn't needed, either.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama earlier announced that he will be contesting for elections and will be forming his own political party. Bainimarama also announced that he will be resigning from his post as the Republic of Military Force Commander when he will contest. 66. i agree with what is mentioned above, if itaukei marries other race, then there will be no racisim, no more politics of hate, intermarriages is a good idea, then we should promote. our boys a leaving in numbers in the middle east. this a dangerous places, like iraq afganistan, syria, lebanon, sinai. there will be many wars coming up like israel and iran ,etc etc. our boys a going in to this conflict whether they like it or not, those in the bristish army and the Fiji army. so we should encourage our boys too intermarry with other races , to make a lot of babies, even out of wedlock. just fuck those pussies , whether the mother is Chinese , or Muslim , Hindu, Gujarati, Malaysian, Aussie, kiwi,Asia, srilanka rabi, rotuma , half caste loma, just make alot of babies. for fiji , for tomorrow. me tawa mai na nedatou VKB.

  67. come on Fiji boys , especially the army boys , intermarry. is the only solution for us all.

  68. this is a good idea. our Ag kayium is practising it, but we itaukei should also seduce other women from other race.

  69. by marrying other races , you get to learn other culture, respect other culture, and we will be able to respect each other. it will open the itaukei people into a new dimension, for example: Indians , Muslim, Gujarati, they a good business people , you can learn from them, and Chinese a hard workers, kai valagi are always honest. learn and respect them and use there people and there network, there type of life style , to develop yourself .

  73. Yes, encourage interbreeding. Fijian women should spread their legs for foreigners, just as the regime is doing for us Chinese. With your boys serving in the Golan Heights, this is the perfect opportunity. Thankee Frankee for more hankee pankee!

  87. Apisai Naicori can you please contribute constructively on this blog. We need constructive ideas and sensible views other than vulgar language.Swearing is an indication of anger, frustration, defeat and shallowness of mind. From your tone we all know that you are a soldier, but a trained soldier should be cool, calm and collected at all times. Remember you are paid by us the tax payers the members of the public and the very reason of your existance is to look after us the people. Bainimarama has no money to pay you.You are getting paid from our sweat likewise Bainimarama his taking full advantage of the situation to fill his pocket from the peoples hard earned money. If I were you I would just shut up and focus on what I'doing.

  88. Some people are undermining the SODELPA and the Marama Rokotuidreketi.Since the begining of the political uncertainity in Fiji in 2006 the only chief who stood firm and maintain her stance against the coup is Adi Teimumu Kepa. Some clamsy chief have spoken in support of Bainimarama because they are frighten and the rest a keepin quiet because they are all travelling on the Taveuni bus but Adi Teimumu is the real leader as she is not frighten to speak out her mind for the people and when she talk she did it with substance. To Adi Teimumu You are the peoples champion. Keep up the good fight. You have our support and we will vote for you and your party. God Bless SODELPA
