Fiji activists arrested for wearing T-shirts about the Budget

Update from one of the arrested activists: Just got released from Police Custody after over 7 hours of detention.

We were basically arrested for having lunch at the sea wall......I mean why arrest us??? for just gathering for a picnic??

Oilei and this budget!!

I know that people are raving about the budget, where is the money coming from?? Like a friend of mine said. Here is the shopping list but where are the receipts??? Where is the money coming from for all this??? Are we so naive to rave about the budget but not care about how we are sourcing this???? And with no Auditors report made public how do we know that this money is being utilized for its true purpose!!

I salute my 13 other friends and colleagues that joined us.......

Earlier story: A group of activists have been arrested for wearing T-shirts against the 2014 Budget.

The activists from PCP, Dialogue Fiji, Fiji Women's Crisis Centre and FSPI were having a picnic in front of the budget address venue wearing T-shirts that said "C'mon Fiji make budgets public now".

After the arrest, an activist said on social media "so how else do women and communities define their peace and human security".

The regime announced the budget today but are not making documents like the audit review and budget proposals public.

Budget highlights:

  • Airport departure tax will increase to $200 from January 2014
  • Excise duty will increase by 10%
  • $92 million allocated for pay rise for civil servants
  • $15 million allocated for 2014 elections
  • Primary and Secondary education will now be free
  • Tavua to Korovou region declared a tax free zone for commercial activities and not just agriculture and dairy.

I don't why people are praising this pipe dream budget. It is obviously vote buying and getting us deeper in debt. It is another elaborate staged act designed to hoodwink the public. So like all previous budgets it will have initial hype, glamour and details at the presentation but when it comes to implementation through the year nothing is shown of how it is spent and if it was per allocation. The absence of the annual Auditor General's report is the main sticking point. Without it we do not know if the budget was honestly pursued to the letter.

Is there a tabulation somewhere of the allocations to all departments and a comparative column to shown the difference to the 2013 budget. Because I haven't seen the army's allocation. I only saw in brief the extra provision of some millions for extra allowance for peacekeepers. I always thought that UN pays well above the normal pay the soldiers receive in Fiji that such allowance is not justified. So why the extra allowance. This reeks with loyalty continuity payment. This budget is another photo op for bai, kai and his band of merry men and women basking in the spotlight of publicity and attention. Con buggers thats all they are.

A "too good to be true" budget would be going through the minds of a smart workforce. More so, when they all don't know how/when/where the monies are actually spent in REALITY. And they've all been in the dark on that the last 7 years.

Hence, would be prudent to save all their extra pennies instead of spending it, to cushion the blow for their 50% paycut, post-2014 fraud-election.

What a mother of all budget? This type of budget was never presented by Rabuka and SDL governments. Instead those two bankrupted the country. eg NBF saga and Agricultural scam. The free education to all is the biggest out of all. The budget deficit will be only 0.5 billion. Bainimarama should be commended for the good work he has done from 2006 to present. Where are the nationalists now? Fully beaten by this budget. PM win now win easily. He will be cruise to victory. My vote to you sir.

The outcome, unless more people take a stand, will be a completely dysfunctional Economy, unable to create wealth and income other than to Fill Frank and Co.'s pockets.
Congratulations and kudos to those who were courageous enough to wear their hearts on their sleeves and to take that brave 1st. step of opposing this evil Regime.
I hope that this will encourage others to begin to rise and stand up for their rights and regain their dignity, their Government, Democracy and their Country before it's too late.

I read this introduction to Budget 2014 speech by the illegal PM with incredulity, disbelief,
wish I had thrown my shoes at him, and teeth gnashing.

"Next year will go down in our history as the year that Fiji first embraced genuine parliamentary democracy and set a new constitutional course towards a brighter future for every Fijian. It will mark the culmination of my Government’s efforts to put in place changes that will yield long-term benefits for Fiji and all Fijians.

We have a new Constitution to guide us, one that will allow Fiji to prosper as a united nation.

For the first time, Fijians have a Constitution that protects a wide range of civil, political and socio-economic rights.

For the first time, Fijians have a Constitution that demands accountability and transparency from Government officials, which builds strong institutions, and enshrines principles that are at the heart of all the world’s great liberal democracies.

For the first time, our nation has a Constitution that establishes a common and equal citizenry, without denying anyone’s individuality or culture.

The Constitution recognises and protects the indigenous peoples of Fiji and their unique customary practices, culture, tradition, language and communal ownership of land.

At the same time, it also protects the rights of all other Fijians, including the rights of tenants and lease holders."

Unbelievable lies, lies and more lies.

WEWILL NOT VOTE FOR BAINIMARAMA

I have just read criticism about USP and VC Rajesh Chandra. Most critics have an axe to grind, such as the anti-Premila Kumar blogger who is claiming Premila's husband was unfairly appointed by Rajesh Chandra. Bullshit. There is no evidence of this or other allegations, so everyone shut up. Free speech and academic freedom is well and alive at USP as long as it is exercised with responsibly. Wadan Narsey was not responsible. He was a traitor. He was biting the hand that was feeding him. We at USP say good riddance.

Oh no...Theres is not much diffrence..if there's an increase in civil servants salary, especially when 7% TAX (Not sure about the rate for 2014, FIRCA only got the 2013 rates) will be deducated from your salary if your new wages rage is from 16,001 – 22,000.

Now take for example your salary is
14,720 x 23% = 3,385.60
New Salary from 2014 = 18,105.60

7% Vat - 1267.40
with 8% FNPF(still belong to the GOVT) - 1448.45

My New Net Salary will be = 15389.75

an increase of 81.00 fortnight...
But not sure about the TAX for 2014...

An increase in departure tax is fool hardy. It will result in an increased Financial burden to those who cab least afford it, who, through no fault of their own, need to leave Fiji to acquire an income from overseas, they otherwise would not need to pursue. Thanks to this illegal Regime, the need to leave Fiji's shores for a viable income to house, educate and feed their loved ones, has become an absolute necessity, no longer a matter of choice.
The increase in departure tax, also has the potential to inadvertently affect tourism, to decrease the number of people choosing Fiji as their holiday destination.
The increase in departure tax, creates no employment, builds no infrastructure and reflects 100% on the Regime's inability to manage Government and its Finances.
It is nothing more than a greedy grab for cash from the vulnerable, the least able to take a stand against it and if anything, it highlights to more and more Fijians, many of whom once supported the Regime, that it's time for the Regime, Frank and Aiyaz, to go!
One has to wonder, just where is the Revenue from this increase in Departure Tax, going?

Civil servants pay cut of 25% after the coup.
Dollar devaluated 20% = 25% increase of cost of living.
That means a purchase power of only 60% a priori.
But after 7 years of rule, real compound inflation is actually much higher than a simple 25% decrease due to the devaluation.

Now the lower earners in the civil service will get more or less a 20% of that little 60% as an increase, and less those earning more. To achieve this remarkable budget, Fiji has to borrow money overseas...And now everybody is supposed to celebrate... we are all ulukau. Coups are bad for the economy.

TREASONIST USP VC RAJESH CHANDRA said...

@Barking dog is fully behind USP VC Rajesh Chandra to lick his behind. Rajesh is no selfless ship captain. He is a shrewd, self-serving regime lackey who runs USP like a tyrant.

Wadan Narsey exposed how the regime was plundering our money in the national pension fund. Wadan was trying to protect the public interest. What did Rajesh Chandra do? Accuse Wadan of bringing disrepute to USP – what a joke.

Rajesh asked Wadan to to apologise to Bainimarama and his right cherry Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who wanted to charge Wadan with sedition. Wadan stood his ground, and he was eventually sacked.

Rajesh Chandra is the regime's hitman at USP. He takes order directly from Bainimarama and Khaiyum. He is very much part of the coup apparatus and structure.

He has helped bring an important institution like USP under the complete control of the regime.

Rajesh is also indirectly complicit in the plunder of the FNPF. He is aiding and abetting the regime in robbing the FNPF by silencing people like Wadan when they speak out.

Rajesh Chandra is a treasonist coup collaborator who should be held to account once this illegal regime is brought down.

See the earlier C4.5 article on how Rajesh Chandra sacked Narsey:

That is the beauty of having acquired good education at USP from a teacher who put prime important on critical thinking and from my Professor at La Trobe University who attached great importance to creating a fairer, just, more egalitarian society through people-centred development.
For me it's always putting people first. Not dictators and their powerful friends especially the "competent authority" installed by the dictator. For that matter it would be interesting to balance the last budget with actual expenditure. An Australian Federal Court has been told that notorious conman Peter Foster is probably still living on or around the Gold Coast.

The Courier Mail reported Australian police have an arrest warrant for Foster, who claimed he has been in Fiji since he failed to appear in the Federal Court for his October 24 sentence to three years jail for contempt.

At a Federal Court directions hearing about Foster’s recent appeal against his sentence, Justice John Dowsett yesterday asked what had been done to find or extradite him.

Barrister David Kent, for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, said it was unlikely there would be a need to extradite Foster as they are very doubtful Foster is anywhere other than in Australia

Sadly, with the state of the nation, the degradation of the economy, institutions, government and policy - there is no-one left other than the thieves in charge and the usual sycophants, licking at their sapo as they walk past. Davis is a prime example of this form of sad desperation.

Graham Davis agrees he is Bishop Hatto, but with one big difference, that he is not Bishop Hatto. And he thinks that makes sense somehow. I guess that being a long-time apologist for this crooked regime routinely requires that sort of mental gymnastics and moral equivocation.

Apparently, Graham also now counts himself amongst the hoi polloi. Dunno if I would count him as one of the "ordinary" people. I like to think that most people are more decent than that. But I would at least agree that he, for one, is definitely filling himself at the public granary.

Ratu Inoke told the forum the Fijian Government had managed to address this from 2007 by implementing reforms, pursuant to the letter and spirit of the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress. He said this had seen the gradual alignment of policies and regulations in all sectors to give teeth to Fiji’s new constitution.

SBS News 10/11.
An Australian senator was detained in Sri Lanka and then put on a flight back to australia because of her opposition to CHOGM being held there.
Remember this sort of thing happened fairly regularly in fiji since the 2006 coup. But that's understandable. You expect that sort of thing in a military dictatorship. But Sri Lanka is supposed to be a democracy. That's why CHOGM is to be held there. But what kind of democracy is Sri Lanka? It's human rights abuse record is well documented.
The Sri lankan military had lied about the famous Tamil Tiger tv presenter and propagandist Col. Supriya being killed in a military battle. A video taken by a Sri Lankan soldier has emerged showing Supriya was captured alive and sexually assaulted and killed and her body piled up with other women's bodies.
Human rights groups have said this was furthet evidence of war crimes committed by the Sri lanka regime.
Canada has said it will boycott CHOGM in Sri Lanka. Now the Indian PM too is thinking of doing likewise.
But Australia is going and other Commonwealth countries are happy to engage with Sri lanka as a member of the democratic club.
If it's okay to engage with Sri Lanka then there is no reason why any country should shy away from engaging with Fiji and why Fiji should still remain suspended from the Commonwealth when
the Commonwealth clearly does NOT uphold its own democratic standard?

MORAL CORRUPTION AND INEFFICIENCY AT USP said...

@USP lapdog, moral corruption and inefficiency at USP starts at the top.

the two people who have brought most shame and disrepute to USP and destroyed its academic reputation and standards is sycophantic and spineless VC Rajesh Chandra and lying and deceiving DVC Esther Williams.

Surely they did not have to dive that deep into Bainimarama and Khaiyum's arses and allow the two dictators to take control of USP??

Wadan Narsey stands heads and shoulders above both these two corrupt individuals, academically and morally. Rajesh and Esther are not fit to polish Wadan's shoes. Wadan was a credit to USP. His sacking has really damaged USP's image.

USP's problem is you have two lightweights at the helm, Rajesh and Esther. Their moral corruption compounds their inefficiently.

We read in the article 'Ratu Inoke: Elites sewed divisions' (Fiji Sun 10/11) that the Minister for foreign affairs and international cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola has accussed elites of sowing seeds of division and undermining independent institutions to entrench their own privileges. He said the removal of fijian governments in 1987 and 2000 were the most radical expression of this dysfunctional governance and political system. As a result tens of thousands of fijians suffered and made the decision to leave their home forever, to leave fiji.
I could not find anywhere in the article any mention of the pivotal role Ratu Inoke Kubuabola himself played in the racist Rabuka military coup of 1987 and the trauma that first coup caused to hundreds of thousands of Fiji citizens.
I suppose it would not have sounded right if Ratu Inoke Kubuabola were to highlight his role in that catastrophic and nation dividing event of 1987.
He was after all giving an address at the 6th Bali Democracy Forum in Bali.
Ratu Inoke is now a respected democrat.
That's why he gets invited to important democracy forums.
Ratu Inoke is clearly not a self-serving elite who has been entrenching his privileges.
He is an altruistic leader.
And so are they all in the Bainimarama military dictatorship!

India PM to miss Commonwealth summit

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will skip this week's Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka, as pressure grows for a boycott of the event over alleged war crimes by Colombo.

Singh sent a letter to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse on Sunday telling him of his decision not to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which has become mired in controversy over demands for Colombo to address the allegations.

The prime minister was "unable to attend personally" the 53-nation summit which Sri Lanka is hosting from November 15-17, foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said on Sunday.

'Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon leaves Sri lanka after being detained ahead of CHOGM meeting' (ABC 11/11).
Let me skip the bit on the Senator's detainment and interrogation by the Sri Lankan state authorities .that was covered in my earlier posting.
We read in this article that the UN human rights chief Navi Pillay had said following her fact finding mission that "democracy had been undermined after the end of the civil war"
The UN estimates up to 100,000 including 40,000 civilians were killed in the last few months of the fighting.
Now it's confirmed Indian PM Manmohan will not attend the CHOGM meeting. You the Man, Manmohan!
British PM David Cameron said he will attend but will demand an investigation into human rights abuse accusations. Wow! Nothing will come out of THAT, you bet.
He says Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa has serious questions to answer about alleged war crimes by government forces during the last months of the civil war.
Indeed he has but he has successfully evaded providing the answers because he knows the Commonwealth and the UN are all paper tigers.
He is still recognised as a member of the democracy club.
Now if you and me are members of The Merchants Club and we don't behave according to the established rules we'd be kicked out before we can say benchod!

The statement in the Fiji Sun on 10th Nov 2013 by Ratu Inoke Kubuabola accusing the elites of quote “sowing seeds of division” and “undermining our independent institution” to “entrench their own privileges “He said because of this, the very idea of a just and equal society; of an accountable government and of loyalty to the nation-state was being eroded from within unquote is utter bloody nonsense.

This attempt to deliver a moral message is coming from a man who according to Rabuka was the 3rd person in the group of 3 who approached him in QEB to undertake the 1987 coup?

Rabuka and I were attending a conference on electoral systems in Bali in November 2012 when he said so.

Ratu Inoke is talking about himself and his co-conspirators when he refers to the ‘elite’ that undermined our Independence, trashed our just and equal society, they have never been accountable for their actions nor have they ever been transparent about anything except their disloyalty to our people.
By not dealing effectively with the perpetrators of the 1987 coup, we have unwittingly allowed the culprits to remain at large, undeterred and in some cases showing no remorse and re-engaging in other coups including 2006.
That is of course except for George Speight and his group of who are the only ones to be made to account for what they did. So what may I ask is the difference between what George did verses Rabuka and Frank? Absolutely Nothing!

Removing an elected civilian government for anything other than genocide is treason regardless of how you dress it up or try to justify it through orchestrated propergander by professional spin doctors.

So why hasn't this government corrected the injustice and kept George & Co in jail while the others are as free as birds?

Where’s the justice in that?

They toss Qarase into jail for a trumped up charge on some minor thing that occurred 19 years ago, but hide behind immunity for the treason they committed in 2006.

They fail to investigate or prosecute those officials who beat up escapees that millions watched online and their PM actually praised the men doing the beating? Yet they rely on immunity to cover their wrong doing.

The families of those killed still await justice for their loved ones and closure for themselves, but the perpetrators who did this will avoid prosecution by hiding behind the immunity of their masters.

So long as we, the people allow the entrenched immunity provisions in the constitutions that protect the perpetrators of coups to remain, the only outcome that we can be certain of is that others coups will follow.

Our solution for the wrong doers should be simple, uncomplicated and consistent ‘if you want to do the crime then be prepared to do the time’ to do anything less will only encourage the use of arms not votes as the means by which we elect or remove our governments.

Mich Beddoes speaks the truth in his response to the lies presented by Ratu Inoke kubuabola at the Bali Democracy Forum.
As a keen follower of the events leading up to the racist 1987 military coup I know as do many others that Ratu Inoke was a key player in that coup.
He together with some others - who are now smartly parked in Bainimarama's "multiracial" coup installed government - did irreparable harm to the country and tens of thousands of fellow citizens who were forced to flee from the country.
On this Remembrance Day we should remember the harm Ratu Inoke and his marauding mob did back then.
Mich Beddoes helps us to remember.
When one speaks the truth one lives with human dignity and can hold his head high. Mich Beddoes can hold his head high.
People who lie can only hang their heads in shame. The shame is not diminished by them holding high positions in the coup installed regime.

Inoke Kubuabola decrying the elites who undermined Fiji's democracy reminds me of Lincoln's story of the man who murdered both of his parents and then asked for leniency on account that he was now an orphan.

On Remembrance Day we remember with deep gratitude the sacrifice soldiers made with their lives and limbs fighting tyranny so that citizens can live in freedom and human dignity.
Fijian soldiers of old made that sacrifice too.
But the Fijian soldiers of today are remembered for how they have trashed citizens freedom and rule over them at the point of the gun.
It's a very shameful decline .

Mana has fallen in Fiji : -I hope you understand what a budget is. It is merely estimated figures there is nothing phusically there to fund but they are hopping that the source of fund they may have identified would flow in to cater for what threy have budgetted otherwise deficit more spending less income. You are talking about overseas countries sourcing the budget. Very dangerous more debts and more borrowing. The budget sounds good but knowing what Fiji Government can afford inrelation to its source of income there a big doubt that the budget will be workable and one wonders if it is tailored to rope in more supporters for the regime in the propose 2014 election. If that is its aim then people are living in another dream land as this is another deception by the regime too good to be true.It merely figures nothing physical.Na waca ga qori vuli free. Can the PM tell us now why he is contesting election...
when he told Fijian in 2006 coup that no one in interim government will be allowed to stand in election in 2009/20014?
Also will he uphold 1997 Constitution and no military will benefit and will give us good transparent and accountable government?
Can Pm publish AG Reports 2007-2012 as promised and Fiji Tenders awarded to companies and amount /salaries of all ministers for public to view if it was transparent?
We hope to see some answers soon.

No professional who is worth their salt would bother with a real critique about the state of Fiji's economy and thereby, indirectly help the thieving iAG's regime - which is really what treasonous Khaiyum is pleading for.

Inanycase, there is NO NEED to for the writing has been on the wall for ages since their unlawful takeover in DEC06 and abrogation of the Constitution in 2009. A dictatorial regime with no respect for the rule of law IS and ALWAYS WILL THE PROBLEM and no appraisal, no matter how comprehensive, honest and solid, would ever change the leopard's spots. The regime needs to go and justice must follow as it ought to.

It's so easy-pizzy for the iAG to speak out as he thinks fit since his regime controls our public space while stifling free speech and expression. Even Tomu and Hari on the street knows that.

"Voice your views
Torika Tokalau

FIJI lacks business professionals who can independently speak their views regarding the economy.

This was the concern raised by Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the Fiji Australia Business Council post budget forum yesterday in Suva.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said business professionals had an enormous role to play in the modernisation of the economy.

"It is somewhat quite disheartening that we have never had professionals actually come out in terms of debates regarding the economy about what they believe, what their assessment is when a political party puts out its manifesto," he said.

"For them to actually stand independently in public in front of the media and say we believe this is actually very good, it's going to work; it's not going to work because the mathematics is not right, we won't be able to afford it."

He gave an example of the recent Australia election where independent commentators came out to give their analysis on the different manifestos, for example the government policies.

"We lack that in Fiji.

"Whether because it's of a lack of confidence by these professionals, or whether it's because we are so intertwined with politics — whether its ethnic politics or party politics — whatever it is.

"But it would be good for them to make a break from it because that actually leads to some intellectual input in the public space."

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said there were only a handful of academics who spoke out about their views on the economy, adding there had never been a business professional who came out to independently make those calls.

He said silence by business professionals could also be attributed to their alliances with political parties.

"I think it's the business communities, it's the professionals who need to play a significant role in the modernisation of Fiji.

"Modernisation of Fiji doesn't only include infrastructure modernisation but in terms of our philosophical outlook and the way we look at where Fiji should be and how we ourselves should interact with each other."

The Bad news is that the budget has increased the price of all things.
The Worse news is that the ordinary people will not be able to purchase anything for their needs.
The Worst news is that the Government will collapse soon.
The Best news is that God is in control.

People would sooner ignore the shrills and squeals of the fraudster masquerading as Fiji's Attorney General... complaining like a lame duck at the lack of quality debate in the public arena.

Is he soo stupid or what, that he can't seem to understand that everyone can see clearly through his BS in trying to provoke business professionals into joining his boring, self-serving and going-nowhere-monologues, publicly.

Mmmm..The iAG is welcome to have his controlled public space (along with his fellow-shysters propping up his dictatorship) and eat it too.

That's a great distinction between the intellectually-challenged (through no fault of theirs) and the criminal-minded who willfully and deliberately perpetuate an ongoing unlawful situation.

The latter group will always be held to a higher standard than even the average Tomu, Polly and Raju on the street - who maybe street-smart but are not learned to a degree that would make them equally culpable.

As the good book teaches us:

"To whom much is given, much more is expected."

Still keeping my flashbeam light trained on the regime's almighty iAG, here's another prized true-to-form dead giveaways from the shyster:

"He said silence by business professionals could also be attributed to their alliances with political parties."

No, it cannot.

Of all people, the regime top lawyer should know the most basic rule of justice: that "silence cannot impute guilt", much less confirm 'alliances with political parties' as he is accusing business professionals here - esp. given the adverse cumulative factors in this country surrounding their legit. business interests.

Just as one cannot impute 'cowardice' on my part for choosing to use, well, "anonymous" since I happen to be living under this dictatorship.

Wonder what they are doing in Australia?
They could be wearing their Fijian sulu and bula shirts full time in Fiji!

We have been waiting for this chance for so long people and lets do it legally and not vote for Voreqe and his government.Be reminded about the the wifes and children of the CRWs, the killing of the man from Nakaulevu,Rabaka from Nadi, and many more with their killers walking freely and boasting about it. His brother in-law the killer Kean, who was put in jail but without serving his time and where is he now?. Iam just saying a few. We tend to forget this when he smartly disguise himself with a very very attractive budget. We will do the CLEAN-UP WITH LEGAL MEANS.

Anonymous said...

@8.43pm..cleaning up by legal means is a wasteful exercise. The law is made to favour the regime. They need to exit government the way they came in. Guns over Guns!

editor,
Allen Lockington : "This time we will see if the law is equal to all citizens of Fiji" (Fiji Sun letter 14/11).
Haven't we seen that already?
Remember the Kean case and the revolving door justice?
For wearing a protest T-shirt citizens are arrested and their freedom denied them but to date no arrest for the brutal beating of the escaped prisoner.
And no arrest in the firebombing of the former Fiji Times editor's home. I am sure there are others who can cite other cases where the law has been applied very selectively.
Allen might need it "this time" to see if the law is equal to all citizens in Fiji.
Some of us who have kept our eyes wide open already know it isn't.
In a dictatorship it is always hard for the law to be applied equally to all citizens.
It is often hard for that to happen even in a democracy!
But I'll take democratic justice any day over justice dispensed in a dictatorship.
I'll also take it there is no need to explain why.

In Fiji Today someone claiming to be my "workmate at the social welfare ministry" wanted me to talk about the Australian government.
( I never worked at the social welfare ministry. I only worked at the social welfare department).
Now in one day I expressed two views on the Australian government. One, I praised the government for the $30 million aid it has pledged for the relief effort in the Philippines in response to the unprecedented typhoon disaster there.
Two I criticised the government for acting irresponsibly by engaging with Sri Lanka by attending CHOGM despite its appalling human rights abuse record.
If I was in Fiji at the present time only one of the two views would be allowed.
I think you all know which one!
