Revealed - SODELPA's list of shortlisted candidates

Hot on the heels of a fiery speech by the new SODELPA leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, Coup 4.5 is today able to release the names of potential candidates for the September elections.

SODELPA had earlier this year put out an advertisement calling for people to apply. We are told close to 200 applications were received and from there came a shortlist of 69 candidates.

Under the current arrangement, Fiji’s new parliament will have just 50 seats so the party will have to cull 19.

Key points to note: Tui Cakau Rt Naiqama Lalabalavu’s name is on the list, just five Indians have applied, Mick Beddoes, whose GVP party is now defunct, is an applicant as is youth leader, Pita Waqavonovono.

Bainimarama to FIA Congress: ‘Would the debacle of NBF have been picked up earlier if the auditors and accountants rather simply highlighting matters, brought it to the fore? Brought it into the public domain?’

Part Nine of Special Report by VICTOR LAL

Tomasi Vakatora, the CEO of Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATHL), owed $72,992.98 to NBF.
The family’s Vakatora Holdings Limited owed $1,350,000 to NBF. Vakatora was listed as the company’s accountant.

  22. Commodore Bainimarama has been visible in the aftermath of typhoons, and I give him high marks for that.

He's been rather slow in calling on the military to assist in our clean-up efforts, so lesser marks there but passing.

His creation of the PM"s Special Flood Relief Fund is okay in itself, but its administration has been totally unacceptable. Without independent outside audits, it is clearly designed by Bainimarama to be his personal slush fund. It is unconscionable how he exploits others' tragedies for his personal aggrandisement. I doubt that more than a small percentage of the fund is paid out to those suffering in need. Failing marks for that.

For his government's failure in dredging Nadi River and taking other steps to mitigate the flooding, again, failing marks.

For infrastructure rebuilding and improvements after flooding, mixed marks because the record is spotty. Repairs have been undertaken -- some of them badly needed. But many of the repairs seem politically motivated, and their costs are so high as to imply graft. Below average marks.

All in all, not a very good score.

  26. Just one look at Jolame Uludole is enough to tell you that he cannot be trusted.

I do not understand why Cokanauto is even on the list, if of course this list is real in the first place.

Cokanauto split the FAP in the 1990s, I would think that given the opportunity he would probably do the same to SODELPA.

I plead with SODELPA to cut these two persons off their final list. They are opportunists and will split SODELPA if given an opportunity.

On the other hand, Lesi Korovavala and Rt Joni Tagavakatini would have been good choices, provided they did apply. They are way better than Cokanauto and that cikinovu Uludole.

I do not know what heavy baggage that Serevi might be carrying but he is a successful Fijian entrepeneur. We need more people with business and executive experience in Govt and sadly I don't see many in the SODELPA list except perhaps for Maika Bavoro, Vakatora, Jnr. If SODELPA wants to be successful at job creation then it boggles the mind why they are not looking for people with such experience.

  50. Clampdown on academic freedom of association at USPMarch 11, 2014 at 7:19 PM

SUVA (Fiji Sun): A University of the South Pacific academic has been sacked by the university after it invoked a new ban against staff being elected into political party leadership positions.
Assistant law lecturer Lynda Tabuya, who is also the union-based People's Democratic Party (PDP) Suva branch secretary, told the Fiji Sun newspaper that she had informed the university of her election as a PDP office bearer last year and it had no problem with this.

But a month ago, the university said it had a new policy which would not allow university staff to "hold official positions in any political party".
After this, Tabuya was told to resign or face the axe. When she did not resign, the university sacked her.

USP's Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education, Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, told the Fiji Sun that staff had to choose between working for the university or a political party and that nobody had been forced out.

This is not the first time that USP management has clamped down on freedom of expression and association.

Last year, Professor Wadan Narsey was invited as chief guest of the USP Journalism Students Association to celebrate UNESCO World Press Freedom Day, but was removed from the programme under instruction from USP management after penning a speech saying that "the Fiji regime's decrees, public stance and prosecutions of media owners, publishers and editors, have effectively prevented the media from being a 'watchdog' on government".
"Some media organisations are propaganda arms"

Bai's pockets are so full from emptying the government treasury, corruptions, bribery etc etc and is too busy to even bother, let alone understand the consequences of such clauses in his toilet paper book!

Just imagine - the very first year of this toilet paper of a constitution which has resulted in the removal of the I Taukei scholarships, we have an allocation ratio of 720 INDIANS and ONLY 80 FIJIANS! What will the sum total be 10 years down the line????

  91. Just Situational LogicMarch 12, 2014 at 6:26 AM

    Part 1
What is the name of Bainimarama's party? Who are its officers? What is its platform? Where is its shortlist of candidates?

What about Decree 4 of 15 January 2013, the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree, which purported to repeal and replace the Electoral (Political Parties Registration) Regulations of 1991? (I say "purported", because everything this illegal regime does is without colour of law.) Doesn't the decree apply to Bainimarama and his coming party?

Yes and no, because the regime deliberately drew up the decree as a cudgel to wield against existing parties, whilst exempting new parties and candidates running as independents. The decree is an important piece of Sayed-Khaiyum's plan to unfairly tilt the election in Bainimarama's favour.

Decree 4 is without precedent anywhere in the world. It is stricter than its model, the Kenyan Political Parties Act of 2011. It requires, inter alia, that existing political parties re-register under its new provisions or face dissolution and forfeiture of assets to the state.

A key provision required Fiji’s long-standing political parties to gather 5,000 endorsements signatures from Fiji's four corners within 28 days of its sudden promulgation. This threshold was daunting to leading parties and effectively shut out their lesser peers.

The sheer number of signatures required under Decree 4 set Fiji apart from its peers in the region and globally, particularly when compared to the number of registered voters. This numeric requirement applies to existing parties only. Decree 4 privileges new parties by allowing them an unspecified amount of time to gather signatures.

Adding to the burden of collecting 5,000 signatures in a very short time-period, Decree 4 reduced the field of potential signatories by imposing a blanket ban on "public officers" from becoming a member of a political party. In this way, Decree 4 disqualified approximately six percent of registered voters from political party membership. While international precedent exists for restricting public servants vested with discretionary or deliberate powers, in order to prevent an appearance of conflict of interest, only Fiji imposes a sector-wide ban.

Also entirely without world precedence is Decree 4's prohibition against party membership by trade union, employer association officers, and other civil society leaders. This is a blatant breach of Fiji’s obligations under International Labour Organisation Convention 87.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Just Situational LogicMarch 12, 2014 at 6:27 AM

    Part 2
Decree 4 criminally sanctions political finance offences at 10 years, which again puts Fiji at variance with international practice.

Most ominously, a party's deemed contravention of any provision of Decree 4 suffices as grounds for its deregistration. What's more, Decree 4 entrusts the administrative discretion to deregister political parties to a Permanent Secretary in Sayed-Khaiyum's entirely untrustworthy Ministry of Justice. Standard international practice is for such extreme power to be vested only in an independent electoral commission.

Spoiler alert. This would seem to presage an elections surprise -- a plan by the regime to deregister SODELPA or another leading party, as necessary, to secure an election victory -- however tainted -- for Bainimarama. And by compelling political parties to publically disclose their members’ identities, Decree 4 seems designed to intimidate party members into silence by threatening them with possible future reprisal.

The regime has apparently planned for years to defraud and (again) disenfranchise Fijian voters in this way. The evidence for this is in the so-called "People's Charter" it drafted and sought to impose on Fiji. A provision of the Charter allows for political parties to be abolished if deemed contrary to the spirit of the Charter.

Expect to see the regime allege racism or other offense against a leading political party as a pretext to disqualify it from the elections. The regime intends to cow its members into silence. It also counts on competing parties to weigh negatively the risk of being disqualified against the sudden prospect of garnering extra seats in Parliament.

The regime is most likely to use this gambit against SODELPA. I've no doubt that its secret internal polling consistently shows SODELPA as its strongest challenger. From the regime's viewpoint, it must be neutralised. The recent contrived Fiji Sun poll was a first step in this direction. Ro Teimumu Kepa's outreach to other parties tends to pre-empt the regime's likely preferred approach, which is to allege racism. But if the regime doesn't use this pretext, it can always find/invent another.

Bainimarama counts on the timidity and rank opportunism of the other parties to allow him to pull this off. He can be excused for believing thusly -- after all, the other parties reacted mutely and opportunistically when Bainimarama suddently "disinvited" SODELPA's predecessors from the Leaders of Political Parties process in April 2009.

I hope Bainimarama mistaken in this. The other parties were severely chastened by what immediately followed: Bainimarama's purported abrogation of the Constitution. Thus cast into the political wilderness, they should by now understand that their only hope for a political future lies in a unified approach, if not a United Front.

And Bai/Kai have borrowed 6 billions in loans.

How are we going to repay these Bai/Kai loans when our economy is not growing nor making money ???

    Solution :

Of course, having such a thin skin and deeply insecure, he also can't resist jumping into them with his own personal comments sometimes, usually in Fijian but sometimes in very coarse and vulgar English. He gets especially peeved over comments like these, because they suggest that he might have someone near at hand leaking information.

  129. USP Political participation policy disallows staff from holding positionsMarch 12, 2014 at 3:30 PM

Former University of the South Pacific law lecturer, Lynda Tabuya claims her employment was terminated by USP last week because of her participation in the People’s Democratic Party’s political activities.
Ms Tabuya is PDP’s Suva branch secretary. She was elected in August last year.
“I did inform USP about my election last year and they were fine with it,” she said.
Last month USP staff members were notified about its political participation policy. The policy clarified that staff were not allowed to hold official positions in any political party whether it be local or national.
Those who continued in their political pursuits would be terminated from USP. Ms Tabuya chose not to give up her position with PDP.
“I take full responsibility for my choice to remain politically active within PDP. The fact is – I was given that ultimatum, resign as secretary or your employment will be terminated.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education, Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, said no one was forced to resign.
“That’s the choice they made,” she said.
When asked about Ms Tabuya she said: “For Lynda it was her choice.”
Despite this, Ms Tabuya is determined to make a difference. She said her termination from USP pales in comparison to what she views is the mammoth task of contesting the elections.
“I’m passionate about bringing real change to the poor and disadvantaged, especially those who have no security of tenure when it comes to land. Many people live on native land and pay lease moneys but they can be evicted anytime at the will of the landowners. There needs to be a complete overhaul of the current land laws that gives back the determination of land use to landowners who work mutually with tenants to ensure efficient use of native land and security of tenure to occupants.”
She said too often settlers who had occupied land for generations were removed at will without proper compensation or resettlement plans.
“With security of tenure comes a sense of identity, a belonging, a home. Many displaced communities exist in our squatter settlements and native land settlements that have no security whatsoever. This needs to change.”
Ms Tabuya said this could only come with proper land innovation systems that a responsible government would implement to see the efficient use of native land and security for occupants in a mutually beneficial environment.
“There is not one non iTaukei person I know that wants to remove the rights of iTaukei to own the land. They just want security of tenure – to be able to use the land with fair compensation and build a home that is secure for generations.”
For Ms Tabuya the security of tenure issue was something she held close to her heart. She grew up in the Wakanisila settlement, Kalabu.
“I am grateful for the goodwill and kindness of the chiefs of Kalabu who continue to honour agreements made by our forefathers to give settlers a home. Many other settlers are not so fortunate. I believe there can be a way to provide land security to those in such predicaments to ensure a sense of belonging and identity. This is important to ensure equality before the law and equal access to opportunity and human dignity.”

The 2013 constitution is not even worth the material it is written on, let alone ' stone'.
It is an illegal document by an illegal regime which is struggling to legitimise its place in Fiji politics.
Very sorry, you stole power through the back door, with false allegations, corrupt means and abuse of military position and power, you deserve to be to face the consequences.
Do not talk about constitutions written on stones, this is what the military does, it abrogates constitutions and produces new documents which it says in written on stones. It takes a stone age man to recognise a stoneplate document with jungle law that is still confused about Christ's place in a modern society.

  163. The more strident the comments against Kua Ni Rere and other patriots, the more we know we're winning the battle of ideas.

Bainimarama's cowardice is so widely known and well-documented, it's hard for me to believe a regime troll would be so foolish as to even raise the subject of his courage.

Bainimarama doesn't deserve the PM's car or any other trapping of office. He deserves prison, a trial, and death by hanging.

If regime supporters want to prove their manliness, they will be Bainimarama's character witnesses at his treason trial.

A final thought: why don't you regime supporters/co-treasonists get your own blog and post your comments there, instead of trying to invade our space. This is a site for news and exchanging views for how to restore democracy to Fiji, not a lavatory wall for scribbling hate messages and low-brow graffiti. Croz Walsh and Graham Davis have or had blogs -- they sorely need your patronage. If you want to stay and learn or genuinely debate the issues, then fine. But if you just want to insult and slander people or rant on behalf of the traitor in chief, go apply at the Fiji Sun and good riddance to you.

"" Have these candidates gone thorugh some sort of screening process? ""

And just how and by whom would you propose to screen them?

Perhaps you would select someone from an opposing party to do it.

  188. Two sacked newsroom staff of Fiji Broadcasting Commission have told friends and associates that Raiz Khaiyumi runs the FBC Newsroom. He dictates the journalists to do pro regime stories and to dig up or make up dirt on opposition political parties. The man has much to lose if Bainimarama doesnt win the election. He will lose his job and his house will be confiscated because it was bought through corruption and fraud from loan obtained from Fiji Development Bank. Raiz property and assets are through proceeds of crime. SODELPA will appoint Jesse Sikivou as the new GM of FBC.

  189. ATS workers preparing to walk off their jobs. CEO covering for incompetent Managers on his team. One manager is having an affair with a staff, another getting paid more than the ceo, the latest manager is lost in his role and is a former union president. Wake up and smell the corruption shareholders. The ceo is happily riding out his retirement and does not want to rock the boat. Covers his own type and does not like to be challenged. He offers no guidance and hides behind the 51% shareholder...guess who is that...GOVERNMENT....while some of the hard working staff earn below the poverty line. This company is a monopoly and needs a visionary leader....not a hippopotamus....sad but the ceo can't do nothing on his own. Shareholders, you need to "change the top management" and not do "change management" as you will never succeed. Well what can you say when even the Board members are suspended for not following basic requirements. The time is now, beware when the stroke happens because then AFL, FJ, PS-Tourism and all the other wannabes will learn how weak the ceo is.

  190. PM: Fijians smarter

    Ana Madigibuli
    Thursday, March 13, 2014

He, Bainimarama believes that ordinary Fijians are a lot smarter than they are being given credit for by some politicians.

"They are smart enough to see through the hypocrisy, the power plays, they are smart enough to spot someone trying to take back something that does not belong to them, that is not rightfully theirs.

HERE BAINIMARAMA DESCRIBES HIMSELF VERY WELL :
SOMEONE THAT TOOK SOMETHING THAT DID NOT BELONG TO HIM....LIKE A COUP AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF FIJI.

Like a taking over the govt by force at the point of a gun.
Arent you describing yourself here Bainimarama?
How the fark did you miss all that?

Bainimarama has definitely lost his marbles. Here is the farkhead pointing the finger at others but cannot even see the other 3 fingers pointing at him
    WHAT AN IDIOT!

    ReplyDelete
  191. Bainimarama says some really stupid things.
Sometimes I wonder whether those who write his speeches are trying to frame him.
    Is it QORVIS or Kaiyum?

Either way he is too stupid to realise what he is saying.

He is definitely not leadership material.
He has farked this country for the last 7 years. Paid himself millions of dollars but relegate thousands of people into poverty, including 400 Fijian babies into starvation and death in 2013.

  192. @ Mutual Admiration:- As a young woman of today's society and the Leaders of tomorrow I see Pita W as an inspiration to the Youth of Today. You speak gibberish but this young man has COURAGE! I'm no fan of SODELPA and wish that Pita had another party but alas! Anyways, SODELPA is singing the same old tune with really no vision for the next 20 years instead they see only what is needed now!

  193. Hurray! Jesse Sikivou taking over as CEO of FBC. This is great news. He is a very professional media personality with so many years of experience. He will bring professionalism and credibility to media.

  194. Well, well, so the Vore will
now test the water by trying
    to obtained 5000 Names from
    each Provinces?
I wonder if he's going to
use Tax payers money to pay
people to sign for his paper?
    Cause I know that
he may not get any name at
    all from the Lau Province,
    maybe 10 from Lomaiviti,
    probably 10 from Namosi,
    he's already lost before
    the actual election?
Voreqe, best thing to do is
    to seek voluntary political asylum
in New Dehli-India or China, before
    we tossed you out?
Don't even think of moving close to your grandkids in New Zealand? Cause
we'll hunt you down and make sure
that you stand trial from every
    former Fiji Citizen you Murdered
and take back every million you
    stole during your illegal administration?
    It's a bitch been a blockhead!!!
MAY THE BEST MAN OR WOMAN WIN?

  195. USP double standardsMarch 13, 2014 at 12:00 PM

As a young woman, I see University of the South Pacific law lecturer Lynda Tabuya for standing by her convictions against the tyranny being perpetuated by VC Rajesh Chandra on behalf of the regime.

Lynda was terminated by USP last week because of her participation in the People’s Democratic Party’s political activities.Dr Akanisi Kedrayate's excuses on behalf of USP are rubbish when we read that Professor Biman Prasad is allowed to engage in politics on behalf of NFP with any problems.

I now believe all that I have been reading about nepotism, corruption, unfairness, bullying and intimidation at USP. Carry on Lydia, we the women of this country are fully behind you.

I now understand why standards are sliding so fas at USP.

Traitors and regime lackeys like Rajesh Chandra will pay once we have restated democracy.

  197. SODELPA should do away with the following people:-

Sitiveni Rabuka, George Shiu Raj, Jolame Uludole, Mick Beddoes, Ratu Tuakitau Cokanauto, Mitieli Bulanauca, Peceli Rinakama, Epeli Lagiloa, Yameyame Cakacaka, Joe Dulukiverata, Savenaca Komaiwarai and Anare Jale.

You take them out and you have my vote..............

  198. Sodelpa says the list is FAKE so lets wait for their official one before wasting our time

    ReplyDelete
  199. Obviously these are the list of names of interested Fijians who
    currently
would like to be considered as
candidates for SODELPA in the Sept
    General Election?
I'm sure there are people who are currently working and or going to
University in New Zealand,Australia,England,USA,Canada etc who are planing to also be
    considered for this historical event?
Their apps are probably in the mail as we speak, and i won't be suprised if the numbers will be
much higher than what we've seen?
So Fiji just keep your option wide
and open, cause this is an exciting time for us all? Lets not
forget that we're trying to bring
back Democracy and take out an
    illegal assole Regime-in Bai?
