Opposition counters Bainimarama's boast of chiefly support

BAINIMARAMA: Carried away by stories of support.
Is this his best hand or is there better to come?

Frank Bainimarama has boasted to Fiji media that 18 chiefs have endorsed his party, along with 40,000 supporters.

In an effort to buoy support for his Fiji First Party after a disastrous week thanks to Jiko Tuveni's footh-and-mouth, the illegal leader has put it about that the chiefs are unanimously behind him.

He says 18 of them signed his Fiji First party petition (see list at end of story) but as we know liumuri is a fact of life and it may only be in September that we see the true lie of the land.

SODELPA leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, has waved away the story Bainimarama has sewn up the chiefs as she starts making her debut around the vanua, also receiving support from the chiefs.

Kepa questions why he's named the chiefs saying it's 'un-Fijian', a wise nod perhaps to traditional ways of politicking.

The United Coalition for Democracy has also challenged reports Fiji First is well ahead in the Fiji Sun opinion polls, saying the four opposition parties had just 28 days to collect 30, 267 signatures while Bainimarama had 14 months.

"This as we all saw, was accompanied by a massive publicity and promotional campaign. There was lavish use of government resources and the hand out of millions of dollars in development funds and strategically planned government “road shows” to secure support for the proposed Fiji First."

The May 10 weekly poll has Bainimarama as preferred Prime Minister at 83% and all other leaders collectively at 17%. It also has the yet-to-be registered Fiji First as the preferred political party with 64%, with other parties on 23%.

UFDF says with such high support, Bainimarama should have registered 147,774 signatures.

PRASAD: Holes in ballot paper and polling plans.
"Yet Bainimarama failed to achieve this and fell short by a staggering 107,691 or 73% signatures of support than the poll suggests he has."

UFDF Fiji First should have delivered 84, 221 signatures if it has such a commanding lead at 64% as preferred party.

"And yet they fell short by more than 44,138 or 52% signatures of support that the polls suggests they have."

The National Federation Party has meanwhile criticised the decision to recruit members of the public as presiding officers for the election saying it is a waste of resources.

Party leader, Biman Prasad, says the polling booths were previously manned by civil servants who thanks to the regime rules have been banned from such roles.

Prasad rightly questions how Minister of Elections will be able to find 14,000 'neutral' presiding officers, considering the 80,000 who've signed up have to be apolitical.

The chiefs as listed by Bainimarama as supporting Fiji First:

Tui Vuda, Ratu Eparama Tavaiqia, the Tui Nawaka, Ratu Asaeli Naevo, Tui Sabeto Ratu Tevita Mataitoga, Tui Nadi Ratu Sailosi Dawai, the Acting Tui Tavua Ratu Salesi Baleimacuata, the Tui Navitilevu Ratu Meli Bolobolo, Tui Naviti Ratu Kitione Vuluma, Tui Vusu Ratu Siriako Matabogi, the Acting Ka Levu Ratu Kini Vosailagi, Tui Davutukia Ratu Emosi Buruavatu, the Taukei Naua Ratu Ponijese Lou, Tui Nasikawa Ratu Timoci Koilolo, the Tui Lawa Ratu Sevanaia Lalabalavu and Tui Vitogo Ratu Viliame Sovasova.

No surprise the Fiji Sun has frankie's face written all over it like its a legitimate paper.

But yeah, just goes to show that liumuri is way too evident. Since when does frankie claim to have the support of these so-called 18 chiefs?

Most of these chiefs come from the west by the looks of it, but I know that Kepa and the rest of the other parties have other ideas to counter this in 4 months time apart from all thats left to be exposed by Frankie himself.

That is just 14 signatures of the 14 chiefs. What about the villagers where these chiefs hail from, they probably have totally different opinion. So there you Go!!! Democracy prevails,Gents!

Now that is genuinely funny. If only the election could be won by humour - democracy and it's supporters would win

Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, has defended writing a letter of support for a man convicted of rape in New Zealand.

He has also questioned whether the conviction was “erroneous” given that the man he wrote in support of, Fatu Seti, could not speak “proper” English.

“There are some areas that the judges may not understand,” said the Prime Minister.

“So from what I see, there is a big possibility that a decision might be erroneous and that is why I wrote suggesting to deport him if found guilty.”

Tuilaepa also suggested that the truth does not always win during Court cases.

“In these arguments, if you are good at lying, you can get away with it.”

Mr. Seti fled New Zealand eight years ago when he was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman from Waiheke Island.

Extradited to face trial, he was sentenced by the Auckland District Court earlier this month to four years and seven months in prison.

The sentence was later increased to nearly six years.

Last week, Opposition leader, Palusalue Fa’apo II, attacked the letter of support from Tuilaepa.

He said it was “disgraceful” and inappropriate.

Palusalue said that no other country would see its leader writing letters of support for a sex offender.

He also criticized the Speaker, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao, and an unnamed police chief for writing character references for Mr. Seti.

But Tuilaepa was unrepentant.

In response, he turned to the Bible for justification. He said that Gospel teachings are to help anyone, even prisoners.

But whether a man is convicted of rape or murder, it is all the same, said Tuilaepa.

“My letter to the judges suggested that if they find him guilty, they can deport him back to Samoa,” he said “This is a common thing in New Zealand and America, that if they find a Samoan guilty they can deport them back to their country.” Tuilaepa suggested that the Opposition criticism represents a failure to live by the Gospel.

“I’m saddened by Palusalue because he is a deacon for his parish.”

He again referred to the Bible.

“One of the prisoners that was crucified with Jesus, Jesus told him that today we will be together. So if we follow what Palusalue says, then he’s saying that Jesus should say go to hell.

“This is not what we’re being taught…if the prisoner needs help, help him.” Tuilaepa also pointed out that Mr. Seti’s talent as a fire dancer has helped Samoa in terms of attracting tourists.

Those chiefs have a mind of their own and can think for themselves. If they want to support Bai then so be it. Thats democracy, whats the big deal. Any person has the right to choose a party he or she likes.

There is no chiefs or taukei party period.

This i Fijian politics at its very best.

Captaian Maitoga defeated Rt Penaia in Vanua Levu despite support from the Chiefs.

Isireli Leweniqila defeated the former Tui Macuata Rt Waisea Katoniovere.

Rabuka defeated Ro Lala for the Chair of GCC in 1987.

Chiefs in Fiji are well known for their liumuri and only stupid people will bank on their support.

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau the current President also lost one election to a commoner.

NOT WITH RO TEIMUMU BECAUSE SODELPA IS THE VANUA BASED PARTY WITH HAS THE BLESSING OF THE METHODIST CHURCH.

THE KAI VITI KNOWS THAT THEIR IDENTITY AND SECURITY OF THEIR LAND AND SOCIAL SYSTEM ARE NOW BEING THREATENED BY THE MUSLIM AND THIS MESSAGE IS GETTING TO THEM VERY FAST EVEN THE ARMY AND POLICE ARE SPREADING THE NEWS TO THEM.

Boko Haram has announced today that they have established a branch in Fiji. The Fiji branch has appointed Bainimarama as its leader and Khaiyum as its general secretary. The supreme leader of Boko Haram said that the mandate of Boko Haram in Fiji is not to kidnap girls but to restrict what they wear and to destroy the indigenous race and to enforce sharia laws. It is believed 18 chiefs have endorsed Boko Haram and have given their blessings to convert Fiji into Islamic State. Editor,
It is indeed interesting that Allen Lockington's friend in Labasa should think " if the PM was really getting $1.7m [as rumour has it], he should be getting $2.7m for all the good he has done" (Fiji Times 22/5).
I thought the PM carried out his "Clean-up" coup for the good of the country - NOT TO FILL HIS POCKET!
Allen's Labasa friend's view is interesting also because a short time back several people ( Nardeo Mishra being one of them) wrote in to claim Fiji could not afford a higher then $2 an hour minimum wage.
But of course the minimum wage has got nothing to do with the self-appointed PM.
He should be entitled to give himself the maximum wage!
sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Anonymous said...

@ Rajend

I am surprised you found anything that Lockington says is interesting. It must be a first.

Lockington does not realise that his love for Bai and his friendship with Croz may come back to haunt him.

He is trying to kiss the arse of Bai through his passive consent to the illegal regime. When the fence falls down, lets see which side he lands on. The safe and comfortable side no doubt.

Bai already gets as much as the Aus and NZ PM's COMBINED! That does not include the graft payments. Maybe Allen's friend could send Bai a few extra dollars per week if he thinks he is doing that good a job.

The People’s Democratic Party said they are facing some problems in selecting their candidates for the September 17th general elections.

People’s Democratic Party President Lynda Tabuya said the party has done its second round of advertising but they have not received many applications.

Tabuya also said the party will need around 150 to 200 thousand dollars to campaign for the elections.

According to Tabuya, at least 200 to 250 thousand dollars would enable any party to have a good campaign.

She added they are relying on membership dues and other donations.

The Fiji Media Industry Development Authority has received word that various overseas media organisations have expressed interest in coming to Fiji to cover the elections in September.
MIDA Director Matai Akoula says, they plan to work hand in hand with the Elections Office in terms of media accreditation.
“We have received interests from overseas from media outlets and organisations wanting to come over to Fiji. We have also received word that organisations such as Aljazeera cover the elections. There’s so much more work that needs to be done. We are collaborating with the supervisor of elections; he will be releasing the accreditation form soon.”
Meanwhile, MIDA is currently looking at holding Election workshops for media practitioners next month.

I am still take by the Shamee story and see that Bainimarama's little bit on the side consulted with husband first before she accepted post. Anyway that's wht she told FBC. Ahh, what a beautiful thing:

Nazhat Shameem was appointed a High Court judge in 1999 and becomes our first Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Its a great leap from being a legal practitioner and training other legal practitioners, members of the community and the media on matter to do with the law, to joining the diplomatic service, it is a great leap in altitude, the way that i look at the world, and it is also a great leap in the responsibilities that i now have, its really quite different, so that in itself has required a lot of adjustment.

She was sworn in on Thursday before Acting President William Calanchini.

Shameem will be posted to Switzerland for three years…her family played a big part in the decision.

I was approached by the minister for foreign affairs and my first reaction was Geneva is on the other side of the world, and my family is here, how is this gotta work, my second reaction was its a human rights brief, and human rights brief are always exciting, so i discussed it with my family and my family was very supportive, especially my husband and then i discussed it with my colleagues in the diplomatic service, colleagues whom i knew and then i made the decision that i would accept it.

The posting comes with a huge work-load, Shameem says her priority in Geneva will be to align Fiji with conventions which we’ve signed.

We have been very very focused on health, education and trade and so therefore our focus has been on those areas, but there are some conventions to which we are parties, which we’ve not given that much focus to, and so i think my responsibility is to revive those relationships.

The decision to leave Fiji wasn’t easy…there was a lot of soul searching before her mind was made up.

We are a strong country a resilient one, a happy and friendly one, and i’ll miss all of that.

An added advantage for the former high court judge is that she is fluent in French – one of the widely spoken languages in Geneva.

It is a very beautiful language and i look forward to it, its elegant, it has an old fashioned reserve and formality about it which really appeals to me, so i look forward to that.

Fiji’s Mission in Geneva is expected to be opened in the next few weeks.

Why not BA form it's own confederacy. They absolutely don't need Rewa or Kadavu. They have the economic backbone of this country. They should have more say in the affairs of this country too. What has Rewa, Lau, and Tailevu etc have to contribute, absolutely zip!!
The tides are turning!!!

Spot on,you have said it better. What has Tailevu,Rewa and Lau got to offer to Fiji's economy.Yet they are the traditional seats of Power in Fiji. As for the Western and Northern Region they are the economic backbones of Fiji ;reminder: Sugar cane farming,Gold in Vatukoula and Savusavu,Fiji Water-Ra also newly found Gold in Ra,Bauxite in Bua,Macuata and Cakaudrove,Hotels in Sigatoka,Nadi and Lautoka,Ra,Savusavu,Taveuni AND Laucala-Qamea,Yacht Marina in Savusavu,Vuda and Denarau.Yaqona and Dalo Farming in Taveuni,Pearl Farming in Taveuni and Savusavu.Timber Pine in Labasa,Bua and Cakaudrove plus Sigatoka,Lautoka Fiji's Green Gold.I could go on and I am not boasting.ITS TIME THE PEOPLE AND CHIEFS OF THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN REGION MEET AND DECIDE THEIR FUTURE FOR THEMSELVES.MUTU COLA COLA VINA NA TURAGA na marama DREU.AULE,QI MASI GA HO!!

It is time to set aside this atmosphere of provincialism and lets work together in building a better country for the future of our children. We all need each other. Let;s kick out these criminals first.

What is Khyaium doing in India. Modi has already warned Muslims in India. The Indian Embassy In Suva must give true views of what is happening in Fiji. They must tell about the illegal regime, media decree, no freedom of speech for the people etc etc.
Chaudhry should get to get to Modi and tell about the Taliban and his illegal decrees etec etc.
They must be clean at the Indian Embassy which is coming soon for supporting the illegal regime!

ditor,
It is indeed interesting that Allen Lockington's friend in Labasa should think " if the PM was really getting $1.7m [as rumour has it], he should be getting $2.7m for all the good he has done" (Fiji Times 22/5).
He should be entitled to give himself the maximum wage!
sincerely,

former school teacher Maika Bolatiki, now Managing Editor/News at Fiji Sun, who was convicted of indecent assault on 14-year-old- school girl!

Picture
Bucalevu Secondary School, Taveuni: Bolatiki was convicted of indecently assaulting the 14-year-old school girl at this school
"The complainant was a 14 year old school girl at the time of the incident. She was one of 18 students in a classroom sitting an examination. The appellant was supervising the examination. The complainant was sitting at a desk in the front row. She said that the appellant came and stood beside her on her left. She looked up and the appellant touched her breast with his left hand. She sat up and the accused slid his left hand down her stomach and right to her private part. He then rubbed her private part. He denied touching her breast or private parts...The learned Magistrate made a clear finding that he accepted the evidence of the complainant as truthful. An appellant Court would need very compelling and cogent reasons to interfere with that finding. There are no grounds to do so in this case...The appeal against conviction is dismissed"
Justice Pain, Fiji High Court, September 1997

Going around on Facebook

What we are hearing at ground level confirms to us that the very best efforts of the regime may have been in vain. For example we can be sure of the emotions that many of the people receiving the delegation have not forgotten the itautau of the late Tui Tavua, Rt. Ovini Bokini who was the last Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs during its abrogation by Frank. It sounds like he has asked his family and relatives to see to the resurrection of the GCC as he may have felt it was his responsibility at his untimely death. From what they are saying, this undertaking may be closer to their hearts than the gym equipment and the spades and cheap Chinese sewing machines they have been given by the truckload.

The sentiments expressed to the Gone Marama Bale and the SODELPA delegation is that everyday they can see huge container trucks belonging to Fiji Water and M. Dayal etc., (their words) rolling past and through their villages, taking millions of dollars from the natural resources of the Fijian people, who at the very same time feel more and more alienated from the development process and the growing imbalance in wealth distribution.

Do any of you think the claims Frank made regarding the support of some Chiefs is somewhat of an iceberg. You only see a small part of it above water, but the bigger part is submerged and cannot be seen. Not that I put any weight on the Fiji Sun stories, but its almost like the Fiji Sun rushes in to polish up the parts of the regime's position which has lost its shine and people are beginning to see the rot and decay underneath the shiny surface. Its like we are fast becoming the mini South Pacific version of North Korea, where the grand military parade and the reality of poverty and starvation on the ground are realties, worlds apart.

Villagers in their droves have been expressing their deep gratitude to the Gone Marama Bale, for standing firm and protecting their rights when it was more difficult to speak openly, they thank her for marching on the streets with her Yasana to deliver in person Rewa's objections to the 2013 constitution and for being the lone voice defending the GCC and calling for it to be reinstated and they thank her in the Churches for being detained by the army and the police, defending our freedom of religions rights when she openly called for the Bose Ko Viti in 2009 and was taken under arrest at 2 in the morning.

Are we, am I wrong, in thinking that they have a deep seated wisdom often found in rural folk who know a certain truth. That in all of the noise and confusion, they have not been so easily swayed and have maintained their focus on what is most important for them. What kind of a legacy they will pass on to their children. Come September, what these folk think and do will largely determine where Fiji is headed in the future.

Without inferring any disrespect on anyones legitimate title, I respectfully suggest that the use of the title "Tui" by some villages and tikinas should be relooked at by the Native Commission. It seems that something may have been lost in translation, much like the use of surnames by indigenous Fijians. The proper title is Taukei - like Taukei Naua etc. I stand corrected if soemone has more information. However, when one reads stories of how the myth of Tanganyika came about, one wonders whether this use of the title "Tui" is proper or not. Sa vinaka.

I was very saddened on those days in late November and early December 2006 when the late Tui Tavua, Rt. Ovini Bokini, had to wait for hours outside QEB and at times in the rain to await audience with Bainimarama. I felt that for someone to not let a Fijian Chief into his place when he is seeking audience with him to try to solve a problem amicably is an insult to the Chief and those who are represented by him, in this case, the indigenous Fijians and their Chiefs, and especially the people of Tavua and the Yasana o Ba and their representatives.
Rt. Ovini has now passed away and Bainimarama will not have that opportunity to apologize to him, especially now when he seeks the blessings of the the people of Tavua and the indigenous Fijians and their Chiefs to support his party in the coming election.
The gestures of the Tui Ba (Nailaga) to welcome all political parties to her villages and tikina, indicates that the Western Chiefs and people are not united in supporting Bainimarama's and Khaiyums FFP.
