Four Indo-Fijians and seven women make SODELPA election team

The full list is on the way but below are some of the candidates endorsed today by SODELPA to stand under its banner in the September elections.

SODELPA revealed the candidates a short time ago in Suva: some were expected, others relatively newcomers.

Ro Teimumu Kepa

Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu

Bill Gavoka (former Fiji Rugby Union board chair)

Anare Jale (former PSC CEO)

Dr Mere Samisoni (former member for Lami)

Dr Tupeni Baba

Mick Beddoes (ex United Peoples Party and UFDF spokesperson)

Nirmal Singh (ex People's Democratic Party)

Tomasi Vakatora (businessman and ex Amalgamated Telecoms Holdings)

Four Indo-Fijians and seven women made list and more than 100 people were shortlisted.

THE Immigration Department this morning announced that they will be sending a four-person team to Australia on Monday to meet with Fijian nationals living there who want Fijian passport renewals, new passports or dual citizenship to Fiji.

In announcing the decision this morning, Immigration Department director Nemani Vuniwaqa says this is the first time the department has done something like this.

Mr Vuniwaqa says this exercise will work well with the Elections Office's overseas registration programs, which is also sending a team to Australia, but for registration purposes.

Fiji must be rolling in money.

Col Saumatua is an interesting pick, being part of the 2006 coup and Baiyum govt a few months ago. What happened?

Anonymous said...

This is another waste of taxpayers money on four people going from Immigration. This could have been done by the Embassy staff who are already having a nice time in Australia.
Immigration department is one of the most corrupt department.See how chinese are getting work permits and residence visa . Karl Sakusia is the link for chinese at Immigration. He only serves the chinese. The chinese make phone call and he comes outside and serves them immediately while locals have to wait in the queue.

This looks a Chiefs party and for elites only. Lots of chiefs. Lacks multiracialism, only 4 Indians, no Rajesh Singh on the list. Isa Lei Rabuka. Look how the chiefs used you and now you are dumped. Rabuka should join NFP.

Anonymous said...

Rabuka is a liability. The same faith will happen to Bainimarama one day. All coup makers.

Why people who have Fiji passport but live overseas cannot contest the election. These people should be allowed to contest as they have Fiji passport and they are very good people who would like to contest the election. This will make the election if it will happen very interesting.

1. Why the requirement of 2 years residence when the constitution was made in 2013?

2.Why people who have lived overseas for many years but hold Fiji passport can vote but NOT allowed to contest the election.

3. We can bring some very qualified and experienced people to contest in the forth coming election if it will happen.

4.Why is this discrimination of two years residence requirement?

This must be changed and everyone with Fiji passport should be allowed to contest.

11% of candidates are non-Fijians. How can this party justify that it is a multiracial party. It is a party that will take Fiji back 20 years. It is a party that will use race to divide and create racial animosity in Fiji. It looks like Fijian Nationalist part. Fiji has moved from 2006. It is a time for multiracialism period. Likewise NFP should be banned as it is an Indian Nationalist Party. I thought Nationalist parties were not allowed to participate in new Fiji.

Mohammed Ali so you telling the people to support thugs and Muslim party FF.

Four Indo-Fijians out of 50 candidates? They should be prevented from contesting the election because the Political Parties decree makes it quite clear that any party has to be multiracial. This is just the same old chiefs and their hangers on. At least one of those chiefs, Ratu Lalabalavu, is a convicted criminal. The bread Queen Mere Samisoni is also facing criminals charges. Most of these people will never be elected. Ro Teimumu will place her fellow chiefs at the top of the party list that will decide the allocation of seats. Get set for a whole lot of infighting because these people will eventually realise they have been conned and have no chance of making the cut. What a miserable lot.

Me thinks SODELPA will form the Government and may not need coalition. Kepa and Nirmal will be high vote getter and will rake in 26% of the votes and votes from other candidates will provide about 30% so we looking at 56% votes for SODELPA. I think Indians will rally behind Singh closer to elections because they see working with Fijians are in their long term interest. Khaiyum has killed whatever chance Bainmarama had. Go SODELPA!

Nirmal Singh is a fool and looked it in the line up on TV this evening. He gave an interview to FBC talking about the need for SODELPA to support diversity? Are you kidding Nirmal? Four of you out of 46 candidates announced today who are Indo Fijian? That's less than one tenth of the candidates that were announced and you call that diversity? Indo-Fijians make up close to 40 per cent of the population and you think SODELPA is diverse when it can't even get to 10 per cent of Indo-Fijian candidates You have been conned just like all the others. Bloody idiot.

The very fact that the professional pro-gov bloggers are in force is a sign that this new SODELPA line up make them very nervous. They can no longer accuse SODELPA of being a racists. That was a laugh now it is fallacy. This is a truly united Fiji party. They will continue to reconcile in the party room. Fiji will finally move forward.

The Nation is uniting in its hatred for Khaiyum. A vote for FF is support for what this man has done. If FF were smart they would sacrifice Khaiyum on the political altar. They may have a chance if that happens.

Khaiyum versus everyone else.

And now "The former chief executive of Investment Fiji Ravuni Uluilakeba has taken up a new post in Marshall Islands. The problem with many Fijian's is that they actually believe everything can be blamed on a single person.

I suppose it's inherent with their culture where they bow down to some chief just because he was born into that position.

Qarase was known as a champion of the interests of indigenous Fijians. He, however, rejected suggestions that he was a racist. Addressing Muslims celebrating Muhammad's birthday on 25 April 2005, he said that the concept of racism was "alien and abhorrent" to him. He argued, even so, that to ignore racial issues would be "irresponsible and dangerous," because race was "a fact of life." He said that his government was working to build "an inclusive society, where the views of every community and group are taken into account." He summed up his vision for Fiji by saying, "My government's aim for Fiji is not to return to where we once were but to journey forward together to a place we have not yet been, a Fiji of lasting peace and harmony, where nobody is left behind or goes without."

On 22 May 2005, he blamed lack of genuine mutual respect and appreciation among Fiji's diverse religions and cultures for many of the divisions the country currently faces.

In a speech on 25 May, Qarase affirmed his strong support for the chiefly system, saying that to weaken the chiefs would be to weaken the nation. "I believe that the chiefs of Fiji have relevance for all our citizens not just the Fijians, they still represent stability, order and continuity. ... If the chiefs were diminished, the entire nation would be weakened and be vulnerable," he said.

In a parliamentary debate on 3 June, Qarase set out his own interpretation of why indigenous Fijians wanted to keep the leadership of the country in their own hands. This attitude sprang from insecurity, which he considered understandable in view of what has happened to indigenous peoples elsewhere. He said that Indo-Fijians had not responded to indigenous initiatives to extend the hand of friendship of cooperation, and that until a higher level of interracial trust could be achieved, the insecurity felt by many ethnic Fijians would remain. Rightly or wrongly, Qarase said, those responsible for the overthrow of the Into-Fijian-led government in 2000 were responding to the Tagi in Taukei, or cry of the Fijian people. The government's controversial proposal to establish a Reconciliation and Unity Commission would give such people a chance to clear their consciences.

On 7 July, Qarase told the people of Bua Province that he intended to prioritize legislation to codify and protect indigenous Fijian rights. He indicated that he would seek the support of other communities, too. He blamed the lack of legislation safeguarding their rights for the "dissatisfaction" which contributed, he said, to the military coup of 1987 and the civilian coup of 2000.

He denied being a racial chauvinist, however, insisting in an address to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Nadi on 29 August 2005 that while ethnic Fijians were unwilling to relinquish power, they were willing to share it. He considered that the practical reality of communal politics, however, would take many years to overcome. A greater degree of interracial trust, confidence, and assimilation was required to get away from the situation where democracy was merely a fa├žade for ethnic politics. "It requires commitment, vision and will. Differences of ethnicity and multi-culturalism have to be managed and accommodated," Qarase said. "It is a difficult balancing act, which must take account of the interests of all communities." He added that there were about a dozen minority groups, in addition to the two principal races; they, too, must be assured of their rights. He defended his affirmative action policies, saying they were not discriminatory but "a temporary measure to correct ... imbalances" and close the economic gap between indigenous Fijians and Indo-Fijians

Game Over asks why we should wait until September 17.

This is an excellent question.

First, why did the regime feel the need to wait until September 17 of 2014 to hold elections? The regime could easily have held elections back in September 2007, if Bainimarama's intentions were pure. Obviously they weren't.

And why, after telling us and the world that Fiji would have elections in 2009, did the regime instead choose to abrogate the Consitution and postpone elections another five long years? Obviously the regime knew it couldn't win elections in 2009. This explains why it postponed the elections so long and then embarked on an extravagant spending spree with Fiji's credit card. It also explains why it illegally rewrote the Constitution and used the power of the state to persecute its political opponents. It's all tied to its nonstop election campaigning since 2009.

The fact that the regime so far is allowing the elections to go forward is a sure indication that it already has the machinery in place to steal the elections. The unusually large surge of pro-regime comments on this opposition website is another sign that the regime intends to hold elections this time. Their insistence on the validity of the entirely noncredible Fiji Sun polls and the regime's outlawing of exit polling show that the regime intends to massively defraud the electorate with a "landslide for Bainimarama" that cannot be refuted with empirical evidence.

Second, why did the opposition wait until September 17, 2014? Bainimarama committed treason. Loyal Fijians should have mobilised against him immediately. We did not. Why? Apathy, disunity, cowardice, pacificism? What?

Bainimarama's deceitfulness and lack of good will were strongly apparent even before the abrogation. The abrogation was another opportunity for us to mobilise. It is our duty to defend the Constitution. Again we did not? Why not?

Operation Jericho was a golden opportunity. A simple and safe plan, with a definite time, place and date, advertised well in advance. Had we mobilised, loyal elements in the security forces would have capitalised on our actions. But no institutional leaders fell in behind the plan. Where were our political leaders, chiefs, talatala, labour leaders?

Ghai's commission came in to write a new constitution for us. We didn't invite it, so why did we play along? Why did some of us make submissions?

The regime passed numerous decrees. Why did we observe them? This regime has no legal authority!

The regime set the election rules in its favour and then selectively enforced them. Why, then, did we play along instead of uniting behind a boycott?

The regime obviously has a plan in place to steal the elections, so why are we playing along? Do any of you really think it will be easier to mobilise against this illegal regime AFTER it has claimed to be legitimised by a big election victory -- one where no empirical evidence is allowed to challenge its validity?

Why are we doing nothing until September 17 but playing along with the regime's script? Haven't we seen this movie before?

If we just blithely go along with the regime's playbook, then it is indeed game over. The regime is stealing the election. We must act NOW if we're to prevent that. We need to march, to demonstrate that our numbers are not the single digits the regime pretends. We need to march now to demand exit polling. We need to march now to show the world that we're not passively waiting to be mugged again come September 17.

Give up. It's over said...

Less than 16 per cent of the SODELPA candidates announced yesterday are women and less than 10 per cent are Indo-Fijian. And these people have the hide to talk about diversity! Even worse, there is no-one in this line-up under the age of 40. Can you believe it? When most voters in Fiji are going to be aged between 18 and 30, there is not ONE SINGLE representative of their age group they can vote for. The whole thing is a ridiculous farce. Think about it. SODELPA is a party of old men with a token old woman as leader. Ro Teimumu is 69 this year. She was born in 1945, the last year of World War 2. What a joke! Think about it again. If she wins, she will turn 70 as Prime Minister next year and be 73 when her term ends. You people at 4.5 might want an old woman surrounded by old men running Fiji but I don't. How can they speak for voters who are half a century younger than them?? The election was well and truly lost for SODELPA yesterday. They are finished before they even got started. All they have is a scare campaign about nothing, the supposed threat to i'Taukei land when there is none. Oh, and they wants the GCC restored Think about this again. They are crazy enough to go to this election on a platform of taking i'Taukei lease monies off ordinary people and giving them back to the chiefs. Are they mad? They would be the first political party in history to go to the people on a platform of taking money off them. It's beyond crazy, this one. It's political suicide. So moce mada SODELPA, a party for old i'Taukei men led by a doddering token female with bad knees and who will soon need to be carried around. Nothing to offer young Fijians at all and nothing to offer anyone else either. What a pathetic sight.

Your line of argument is so full of negativity and so irrelevent to the running of a government!

At least, the "old woman" and her party won't steal from the government coffers and pay themselves $1.3m per annum salary and tie the Auditor General's hands and mouth for 8 years!

The lease distribution is the least of anyone's worry when we talk about the abolition of the GCC. There are much much greater concerns to the fijian race than lease money. Think about the security of Fijian
land and how native land laws can be changed and all fijian safeguards removed as we now have in our present "toilet paper constitution." Think about the 600 tertiary scholarships given out with only 16 awarded to native fijians. Think about the endless list of Fijian safeguards that are no more today!!!!!!!

Think, my friend! Think hard about our fijian future if you are a Kai Viti!

Fiji Sun was paid $260,000 of tax payers money by the illegal regime apart from all the government advertisement they get from illegal government. Fiji Sun is owned by Guji - CJ Patel so Guji's will do anything to make money. It is a known fact. Ajit the black sheep from Sri Lanka is the one running the show at C J Patel and he is the chairman for many government owned board. CJ Patel bought Rewa Diary for a fraction of the price when the illegal government should have helped the diary farmers. Now they get duty free entry of all powered milk when similar companies are paying duty rates of 32%.So this justifies the reasons why Fiji Sun poll indicates that FF will win.
Tell Ajit to start preparing to leave for Sri Lanka when the weather changes!
If you think Muslims are 8% then it is obvious this community has benefited the most from the illegal regime with most Muslims on top post in government and it's related orgainsation. They act as SPY for Khayium.
The election will only be won by FF if it is rigged and all signs are for this to happen with a Muslim Saneem as SOE who was put in the post by Khayium to follow his directive.
Saneem is not qualified and experienced.
The fact is i taukei and Hindus are voting SODELPA .Hindus are also voting for NFP and Labour.

Bainimarama, called on Fijians, as the country prepares to go to the polls, under fraudulent and corrupt conditions, to judge for themselves the work his government has done in the last seven years.

Yes, what has Bainimarama improved under his dictatorship? Judge for yourself, the dictator says, how much life has improved, judge for yourself the true and genuinely inclusive intentions, he has for the betterment of all Fijians. But here is his track record:

Fiji is experiencing its worst and highest ever records of:
unemployment
poverty
cost of living
crime
nepotism
corruption
brutality
national debt - now every man, woman and child owes over 7,500 each in foreign debt.
etc.

In addition:

There is no rule of law and investment is at its lowest levels ever since independence. Why is this, its because no one trusts Bainimarama and Khaiyum to follow the rule of law and protect their investments.

Corruption at Immigration Department - U Tech Institute

Rajeshwar Singh ( FPSA)and Manoj an Indian national colluded and opened a business in the name of U Tech Institute at level 8 Honson Building to teach I.T. About 90 students were brought from India and US$5700 was charged to every student for tuition fees alone to teach simple courses like Certificate in Computing. The shared accommodation fee was $2000 per year. This was a major scam at Immigration Department where Rajeshwar Singh was a silent partner. The students were mostly from rural Indian who were fooled to come to Fiji.
The Indian students had complained to the Immigration and Higher Commission but nothing had happened. Even the Indian High Commission is aware but no help was given to the students to recover their money.
Now the same operation has moved to VANUATU where Rajeshwar Singh had visited last year.
The staff of Immigration were involved in this scam to give visa.
FRCA has no record of this operation and the actual income derived from this operation.

Oh, so the best you idiots can come up with in response to the criticism of the lack of women and Indo-Fijians in the SODELPA lineup is "well, there's no diversity in the military". For God's sake, there are lots of Indo-Fijians in the military and there is nothing to stop them from joining. The Chief of Staff is an Indo-Fijian. It's just that military life suits more i'Taukei than Indo-Fijians. It's their CHOICE. It hasn't been imposed like SODELPA's disgraceful neglect to appoint a more representative bunch of candidates. So quit trying to deflect from the real issue here. SODELPA doesn't value women and it doesn't value Indo-Fijians. The proof of that is in its candidates selection. That means 50 per cent of the country ( women) have been alienated and 38 per cent of the country ( Indo-Fijians) can see SODELPA for what it really is - the old SDL reinvented in a huge con of the Fijian people. End of story.

Just Situational Logic said...

True's Up, your logic only makes sense if Fiji First loses the election AND agrees to go quietly. That isn't going to happen, so stop being a pollyanna.

Mobilising behind Operation Jericho didn't have to lead to civil war. It was emphatically non-violent in design. Yes, if loyalists in the RFMF (not just SDL but anyone loyal to Fiji's constitutional government and the rule of law) had heard a noise barrage by the people, they would have been emboldened, even as Bainimarama's accomplices in treason would have been unnerved. But that need not have meant civil war. Especially in view of Bainimarama's legendary cowardice, it could well have led to a bloodless overthrow of the regime and the creation of an honest caretaker government.

Now if, God forbid, Fiji does descend into civil war, it will not be the fault of Fiji's patient and long-suffering patriots. It will be the fault of the regime for its crimes against Fiji, truth, and humanity -- for taking away our sufferage, robbing us, lying to us, destroying our institutions, oppressing our church, and suppressing our civil and human rights for year after year. It will also be the fault of those who enable this regime to continue, through their treason, greed, apathy or cowardice.

Fijians need to stand up for Fiji. If we are not for ourselves, who will be for us? And if we are not for others, what are we? What kind of "peace" comes at the price of slavery? Living in fear isn't peace; it's just the opposite. There can be no peace without social justice.

How is it that Fiji is worth defending in the Solomons, Malaya, and Lebanon but not in Suva?

Anonymous said...

Fiji First is the party of diversity. Not only is it led by traitors, but it also welcomes torturers, thugs, thieves, opportunists, liars, and slanderers. No other party has as many miscreants. No other party can boast that every supporter is a criminal or collaborator.

Anonymous said...

No Argument is rightly named, because he has no argument.

No Argument and Anonymous 4:19 AM keep some strange hours, don't they? Maybe if they lived in Fiji or had more rest, they'd be able to see things more clearly.

With one breath they claim that Indians don't want to join the army, but in the next they say there are lots of Indians in the army! Well, which is it? Can't make up your minds? You regime toadies should at least try to agree on what lies you're going to tell.

No Argument mentions Chief of Staff Gen. Aziz. Aziz is the exception, not the rule. He enlisted long before Bainimarama became Commander. He advanced through the ranks by serving as Bainimarama's witting accomplice in treason.Never mind the ITaukei ethnonationalists serving in Bainimarama's illegal cabinet. If Bainimarama is so interested in diversity then why did he pass Aziz up for the Commander position when he was next in line?

Also, what affirmative steps did Bainimarama ever take to encourage Kaidia to join the RFMF? What recruitment drive did he ever launch aimed at bringing more Kaidia into the military?

Why wouldn't Kaidia see the army as a career path to a better future, especially when the army now rules over the country, taking top civil service and diplomatic positions for itself? And if Kaidia really aren't interested in such work, then why are there so many in the police but not in the military?

Your argument sounds like the ones used by the white supremacists in the American South before the U.S. civil rights movement, or by male chauvinists before women's liberation. "Oh, they just prefer to keep to their own kind." "They aren't suited for such work." "They choose to live in ghettos."

You crIticise the diversity in SODELPA. Where is the diversity in Fiji First? SODELPA values women. It is led by a woman. Apart from Jiko Luveni, what other women are in Fiji First?

SODELPA values people from all different walks. It has Pita Waqavonovono as youth leader. Who is Fiji First's youth leader? SODELPA is attracting Fijians from all communities. Nirmal Singh is being hailed like a rock star since joining SODELPA. Mick Beddoes left hisarty for SODELPA and now even Samuela Samautua has left the regime to join SODELPA.

Fiji First has been campaigning for years, in violation of the regime's own decrees. That's how it was able to steal the Fiji First name from Anit Singh's party. And yet it still hasn't even published its list of candidates or listed the assets of its leaders, as it's required of every other party.

That's because Fiji First isn't a real party. It's a political prop invented by Sayed-Khaiyum in order to prolong Bainimarama's illegal rule and deepen his own pernicious influence. It's a conspiracy strung together with Fiji Sun-propagated lies, Tappoo money, Chinese support, opportunism, hypocrisy and treason. End of story.

Some questions for Bainimarama,

1.Why can't the army composition reflect Fiji's multiracialism?
2. Why did the army provide the guns and the rations for the 2000 coup?
3. What has happened to the so-called military council?
4. What has happened to the commitments of the Charter for Change? And the road map?
5. What has happened to the supremacy of the 1997 constitution?
It seems that all of these were sheer lies and the promises keep changing and like all military regimes, they were all self serving statements.
The regime cannot be trusted.
All sweet talk, and no long term commitments.

Lied lied to the people again about the real reason of the 2006 coup.
Lied to the people about the Charter.
Lied about the supremacy of the 1997 constitution, which was supposedly abrogated in 2009.
Lied about saving Fiji, when in fact you ruined Fiji with its debts, and illegal decrees.
