Son of Fiji's coup leader in court for assaulting wife

Charged: Bainimarama and Kabakoro.
Frank Bainimarama's army soldier son has appeared in court charged with assaulting his beauty queen wife.

It follows rumours over the weekend Meli Bainimarama had stabbed wife of less than year, Hosanna Kabakoro, during a domestic incident.

Bainimarama and Kabakoro  appeared in court at the same time this morning - he on  common assault and she on causing bodily harm.

The pair were bailed and made to pay $3000 sureties. Both have also been directed to live with relatives: he with Meleti Bainimarama and she with Bernadette Rounds Ganilau.

They are to reappear next month.

Father and son: both implicated in beatings of citizens.
Meli Bainimarama was earlier reported to have spent the night at Nabua Police Station while Kabakoro was taken in by the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre.

Kabakoro was kept in an 'undisclosed location', after laying a complaint on Saturday.

Her lawyer has been quoted as saying she suffered lacerations to her hand and bruises on her body.

It is not the first time a member of the Bainimarama family has made the news in recent months after a brush with the law.

In May, the nephew of the country's self-appointed prime minister was charged with attempted homicide in the United States after trying to shoot at two police officers after a 19 minute car chase.

Sevanaia: attempted homicide.
Sevanaia Bainimarama's case was due to have been heard last month but there have been no reports of it having it made to court yet.

Fiji media ignored the story despite wide coverage in Australia, New Zealand and U.S.

Last night, there were numerous comments and debate on Facebook about whether the Meli and Hosanna story would be covered by media.

Editor's Note: Despite the story attracting a lot of interest, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has muzzled local media, issuing a statement saying parties involved in 'domestic incidents' can't be named and neither can the details of such cases be revealed. FBC hasn't even touched the story with Fiji TV only running the DPP item. The Fiji Times, the first paper to report Meli Bainimarama had been arrested, has taken its story down.

  7. This goes to show that Fiji is already going down the same path as Zimbabwe,U.A.E,Saudi Arabia,Tonga, Past governments of Indonesia,Philippines where only the chosen few will rule, indulge and bent the rules to suit them, they will use propaganda fear and money to stay in power.

To the Fijian Indians if you think that the up above government is here for you think again, where was he in 2000 for you, he was eating from the same plate as Speight, Qaraese and many others when violence was dawning on you.If you choose to vote for Fiji First you are directly supporting dictatorship, while AG Khaiyum (The Modern day Jinna) is setting up his own Pakistan, Remember Gandhi ousted the British but also kept the Rajas out so that India had democracy not ruled by a few.

The Itaukei and the Fijian Indians have to work together for the future of the nation, even voting for SODELPA isn't going to be a great option but its the lesser of the 2 evils .

  21. FRANK BAINIMARAMA: "If anyone hits or mistreats a woman in any way, they had better watch out. Because we are going to come down very hard. They are going to feel the full force of the law. I want every Fijian to think long and hard about this and remember one thing above all else. Real men don't rape women and sexually abuse children. Real men don't beat women. Weak men beat women. Pathetic men. Men who use violence to get their way. It's criminal and it's unacceptable. So I appeal to every Fijian male. Be a man. Treat women properly. Treasure them. Protect them." When you act oike you can do anything without question can you not expect others to,do the same? Police bashings, corrupt public officers' practises, violence? Wailei... Lets see how this one pans out.

  23. We don't know the circumstances surrounding this current situation. Let he who is without sin throw the 1st. stone. They both have to resolve their Marriage issues by themselves, but violence is not acceptable in any circumstance. I suspect Meli isn't used to being told what to do and has met his match by a much more intelligent and sophisticated woman. He must be spewing that a woman has beaten him and exposed him!
More important to Fijians, should be the ensuing history of violent acts by a Family, which in their minds at least, are supposed to be Fiji's First Family!
First Family, Fiji First and Naboro next!
    It's all coming as prophesied!
I hope this once easily influenced young woman comes to her senses and recognises that Marriage is a Contract and that perhaps her Husband Meli has not stood up to his part of that Contract, making it effectively, null and void!

First was to a rotuman girl named Va, that didnt last more than 6 months, he later dated after that, but stories went around that he was beating his gf's like fanny lee, now his second marriage to Hosanna not even 6 months and Hosanna probably lost it when the beatings were too much.

  27. If Frank is man enough, he should come out in the news and say that if his son, Meli, is found guilty then he should go to gaol for assaulting his wife causing grievous bodily harm to her. He should not try to influence his courts, prosecutors and legal advisors to affect the outcome of the trials.

And if Hosannah is also found guilty of injuring Meli, (I do not know the law about wives causing bodily harm to their hubbies), then she should be fairly punished for her crimes, since these are felonious offences warranting serious sentences.

I am beginning to feel that things are coming down hard for the Bainimarama family and more difficulties will happen before the elections come September 17th. They should seek forgiveness from all people and institutions they have wronged and then from the almighty God and His Son Jesus Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @2.11 So you mean that God is a fool? Marriage is for life, until death part a couple apart. Therefore, one spouse must murder the other one in order to remarry, but murdering is also against God's law.

People like Meli should simply stick to prostitutes and never get into relationships. There is nothing good a woman could possibly expect from him anyhow. The same is true for so many women in Fiji. Staying alone is a nice way to live.

“The salaries declared by them are not what they were getting paid in the last four years. The amounts disclosed have been substantially reduced from what both were actually paid from April 2010,” Chaudhry said in a statement. He maintained allegations the prime minister and the attorney-general were paid around $1million each through a private accounting firm.

Everyone always assumes the husband is the bad guy, but not all spousal abuse is the man beating the woman. The wives initiate much if not most of it. So, what is a husband to do? Of course he needed to teach her who wears the pants. Sometimes the iron fist is necessary.

  66. FORMER FRENCH PRESIDENT, NICOLAS SARKOZY ARRESTED AND LOCK-UP IN THE POLICE CELL.

Granted, they waited till he was out of office but Hot Damn.. I am liking this!!! :-))

Nicolas Sarkozy arrested over corruption allegations linked to L'Oréal heiress case

Nicolas Sarkozy today became the first former French president to be held in police custody as he was questioned over corruption allegations.

The 59-year-old arrived at the offices of the judicial police in Nanterre, the Paris suburb, shortly after 8am. He was placed “garde a vue” — a legal term meaning he is a suspect at the centre of a major criminal enquiry. It relates to so-called “influence peddling” — effectively trying to interfere with those investigating him over a range of corruption enquiries.
Sarkozy’s lawyer, Thierry Herzog, and two judges were taken into custody for questioning yesterday in relation to the same investigation. Both Sarkozy and Herzog are suspected of trying to pervert the course of justice through their contacts in the judiciary.

Sarkozy is alleged to have offered an attractive job to Gilbert Azibert, one of the judges, in return for inside information about the progress of the so-called Bettencourt affair. This was a case in which Sarkozy was accused of accepting millions in illegal cash from Liliane Bettencourt, the L’Oréal heiress and France’s richest woman, towards his election campaign in 2007.

Investigators also believe Sarkozy was illegally tipped off that his phone was being tapped as part of investigations into another matter, the so-called Gaddafi Affair. This is said to have involved Sarkozy receiving millions more from the late Colonel Gaddafi — the former Libyan leader. The offices of both Gilbert Azibert and Thierry Herzog were raided by police in early March. Computer equipment and a mobile phone belonging to Herzog were seized. Suspecting that his phone was bugged, Sarkozy is said to have used a dedicated mobile phone, registered under the name of “Paul Bismuth”, for conversations with his lawyer. Sarkozy’s home was raided by anti-corruption police within days of him stepping down as president in 2012. He lost an election to Francois Hollande, meaning he no longer enjoyed presidential immunity from prosecution.

Sarkozy has always insisted that he is innocent of any wrong-doing, saying the allegations are politically motivated, and has indicated that he will try to be re-elected as president in 2017.
But today’s developments are a disaster as far as such ambitions are concerned. His remand in custody is a historic first in France. Jacques Chirac, Sarkozy’s predecessor as president, was found guilty of corruption in 2011. Chirac was never held in police custody, and ended up with a two-year suspended sentence for embezzling public funds when he was Paris mayor.

Sarkozy now faces the possibility of being charged with corruption, which could lead to a trial. If found guilty of influence peddling, he faces up to 10 years in prison. Under the “garde a vue” he can initially be held for 48 hours.

MIDA will then turn around bend down and touch its toes. There you go, life in the new Fiji. Choose carefully citizens and be careful what you wish for.

  70. It is confusing to note the reasons why Adi Litia Cakobau has chosen to side with Bainimarama.

After all that this regime did to the GCC, the Fijian Affairs Board, the NLTB/ITLTB, the Methodist Church and the provincial councils, she says that she supports the regime's policies.

Adi perhaps needs a clearer understanding of the regime's socio-economic policies, decrees, motives and actions on common people before publicly declaring her position.
It is not difficult to note that the regime's policies, decrees and actions really work against institutions she used to be a member of [GCC, Senate, etc.] and the people who are directly protected by these institutions.

Anyway, there are still many more kai -Viti out there to pursue the fight, should one or two cross the floor.

Hosanna made her choice. End of story! Whatever comes next is none of anyones business. Bad choices results in bad outcomes, what else does anyone expect?
Likewise, choose wisely in the coming election if you wish for a life of freedom, without lies, torture and manipulation.
Life without Bainimarama should be the goal!

Another group has today applied for registration of a political party for the September 17th elections, saying that they are a group of people which is offering something new for a united Fiji.

Proposed Chairperson of the proposed One Fiji Party Filimoni Vosarogo handed in more than 5,000 signatures and the $5,005 registration application fee to the Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem earlier this afternoon.

The two proposed Vice Chairpersons are former Fiji rugby captain Ro Alivereti Doviverata and Alisi Mavoa, the proposed General Secretary is Sitiveni Kalou while the proposed Treasurer is Fine Ditoka.

Vosarogo believes there is still space for another party in the September elections.

In the end it doesn't matter WHAT caused Meli and Hosanna's fight. If Meli wants to use prostitutes then I say let him. Importing prostitutes from China was one of the PM's better ideas, in my opinion. It reduces rape, and it empowers women to use their bodies as they see fit. Besides, frankly speaking, Chinese women are more attractive than Fijian women. Real men have needs, and Meli is no different, especially when Hosanna is in a family way. Accept it or not, this man is our future leader, so show more respect.

Meli should visit these massage parlours which has been introduced by papa.

  94. Army says...everyone wondering what happened...what started the fight......Mary had fled to the US Embassy after the fight to seek protection as she feared the Bainimarama strong arm and his relentless military bullies. She was interviewed at length at the US Embassy and the below is a transcript of the interview; Note IV is the interviewer and MK is Mary Kabakoro;

IV - I know your upset but we need to know what happened
MK - He slapped me and ...(crying) and threw me to the ground.

IV - Why did he attack you>
MK - I don't know...his ...his...always like jealous...he gets upset with me if a man looks at me or I smile at another person....his always treating me like a muslim woman...its as if he wants me to wear one of those things muslim women wear so people don't look at me or I at them...if anyone so much as smiles at me...he asks me...whose that..why did he smile at you...do you know him...did he...he..

    IV - what
MK - Meli thinks everyone who smiles at me has...has...you know...fucked me...he always accuses me of sleeping around...He expects me to stay home....look down when Im about in town and not speak to anyone..his so domineering...

IV - So tell me about the attack..what started it...
MK - Like usual we came back from going out and he was jealous of me speaking to some of my old friends....we came home and made up...than we went to bed...and he wanted to have sex....Meli likes to smoke pot as well and we smoked pot...whenever we smoke pot he has these fantasies and always ask me about other men who has been with me...his weird like that..

IV - Weird in what way
MK - He wants me to tell him about other man whom I slept with...how they you know...f..ked me and how big their d..k is....His obsessed about it..I always tell him I was never a virgin when he first met me and he should know that...

    IV - So what happened....
MK - Well everything was ok until he pulled out this big....big... you know...artificial rubber thingy....

IV - You mean a dildo
    MK - Yes

IV - Did it have batteries
    MK - I think so....

    IV - Was it large
MK - It was huge....12" and thick...oh my God....I cant believe Im saying this...This is so private...

IV - That's okay we just need to know what happened. So what happened.
MK - This dildo had a strap-on...I thought he wanted to put it on to use on me....I was so scared because of the size...You know Meli is small...(indicates with pinky finger) and I think that's why he is insecure about his sexuality and ask me about other man....

IV - Ok we don't need to know that...so what happened?
MK - Well I thought he wanted to use the strap on dildo on me....but he told me to put it on and you know...put it in his...his ...anus....oh my God I cant believe Im telling you this...Is this right to say such a thing...

IV - We need to know why and what happened...so what happened. Did you use it on him
MK - Yes and he started getting excited and telling me harder harder......well I could not believe he managed to take it all...you know.....up the anus and I started you know....because he asked me too....push harder...I must have hurt him because he turned around, screamed at me saying...'bitch you hurt me...and slapped me'...

IV - So why are police alleging that you caused him griveious bodily harm...
MK - Because I fucked him up the anus with the you know..the dildo...He told them he was sleeping and when he woke up, I was behind him fucking him....this is so embarrassing...

    IV - Don't be..
MK - Can we stop now...

This is about people being people greedy, self centered and down right evil. Have you seen countless stupid kaiviti and equally stupid Indians from all faiths crowding around this moron FB.It is not about trace or religion its pure ignorance.
As long as Fiji has governments who fail their people like the SDL did and others like them people like Frank will thrive not because they are doing anything special but because others did not do what a government should be doing. Frank is riding on the inadequacies of past governments. Sadly SODLEPA will use customary bullshit and paranoia to get into government again and the i taukei people will fail again to trust a solid Multiracial and intelligent party like the NFP to run the country just as they have before. Just because Biman is an Indian he will never be trusted to lead this country although he does seem to be at this stage the most qualified both academically and socially to do so. TRULY ISA VITI and ISA to the i taukei community you will remain a hands to mouth society until you really start to use some of that grey matter.

FWRM and Shamimi Ali thought they would get a few browny points and wanted to make it big including Fijitimes. Now it's all backfired with the celebrity on a more serious charge and Fijitimes in regards to the Crimes Decree of 2009 whereby the splashed names and photos of the couple on their front page. It just shows how dumb and stupid Fijitimes and it's editor has been. To make it worse they release a big misinformation news on the safety of our drinking water. Shamimi Ali and Fijitimes political bias is clearly demonstrated for all to see despite their insistence of impartiality and apolitical status.

  152. Ok let me get this straight, people are calling Hosanna a "smart young lady" whats so smart about eloping with a dick head like him? Whats so smart about prancing around half naked and uploading your pics on social media sites where your profile is free to view (self advertising much) I guess its a tough joint being a local celeb so you got to do what you gotta do to win your loyal fans right? (ugh) even if it means losing your morals.
Its common knowledge around Suva/Nadi on how big an ass Meli is. Hell, he's been like that for as long as I can remember. If she used her head and heeded to the advice of her seniors/peers and those that cared she would not have been so quick to shack up with him and get herself pregnant. (Bless that baby's soul), she wanted more of the fame and "glamour" of being associated with a scoundrel like him. She has quite a colourful past (as do all celebrities) only getting with the boys who can afford her the celebrity lifestyle either monetarily or to be able to mingle within the "right" circles. Poor little lady, you make your bed you lie in it! Meaning, you knew what you were getting into with that ass so it should not have come as a surprise. What self respecting women would stoop that low to be associated with a person like Meli. All that said, theres no justifying what he did to her, and she acted in self defence, well good on you girl! you show him how its done sugar pie.

In closing, Fiji is getting so full of shit with their societal elite and all their bullshit facades! it makes me sick.

Good on you C4.5 for doing this story and telling all about stupid DPP and media. Unbelievable that people are saying this is MB's personal business and no one should know about it. That is crap. Enlightened dOmestic violence organisations outside of Fiji encourage women and their families to speak out and to take action against the violence, not sweep it under the carpet as Bainimarama and Khaiyum want to avoid publicity, going into the election. People, especially on Facebook, who are jumping up and down about the coverage need to snap out of that Stockholme Syndrome they are in and to come into the modern world. Saying it's Meli's business is condoning the attitude that a woman is a man's chattel and he can do with her as he likes. It's no wonder regime has found it so easy to overpower us with people blindly kissing ass and making excuses for Bainimarama's son, just because he is heir to crown. C4.5 check out your journo mates Fiji Friends For a Media, some of the biggest coup apologist are posting comments there under the guise of media but, boy, the Netani Rika's and the Stanley Simpson's are really there to thump anyone who goes anti-regime. Wake up Rika and Simpson, you don't mean nothing to Meli and Bainimarama and them so quit trying to stand out in the crowd. You're nothing to them just like everyone else they're using to keep their gravy train going.

  170. Army says....Fiji and its elites...you know it started with Qarase...whats that broads name...her father was a preacher and wanted a helicopter to pick her up from Lomaiviti to attend a Parliamentary meeting, when the boat was late.....

Its continued on and you can see the many Vanuaatu graduate lawyers walking around town, talking big, thinking big but alas....that's where it ends....than you have the overseas wannabees....with their fancy clothes and slang twangs...I just love our Fiji made flavour with the youngist now redefining Fiji and its young people....

Whats so wrong about everyone called FIJIAN...why should it be a NAME for the ITAUKEI only and not everyone....C'mon guys...give up that race politics....we all need to feel a passion for the ole country relieving the colonial era of its segregation...move on guys......besides...the Fijian name so to speak of Fiji is Viti. Perhaps Vitian if some people are so passionate about retaining a name for themselves but Itaukei is termed landowner...In New Zealnd and Australia they are all termed Zealanders and tralians with the indeginous populous termed accordingly Maori and Kurri or Aboriginal...Why continue to argue a point that is not worth pursuing. This is what the old politicians are trying to push in their agenda but yawn...its getting quite boring. Encouragement is the key to the people of Fiji and with 87% ownership of the land so to speak is the way forward in land and marine utilization and protection. There are a lot of questions about some of these legislation made (we all know) by Khaiyum which is astounding that Frank allowed to pass, which is evident does not help any landowner and these are worth fighting against but the main problem with Fiji is that there I no true leader to take the fight against a man we all know is a coward and hides behind the skirt of the military...even that is now old.....

A 5 years in parliament is not a be time to carry out these developments, how can these project or development be carried out when there is coup every now and then. This governement have managed to carried out these project because the have managed to dictate the country for 8 years. Please also bare in mind that there are also places around Fiji that needs development and upgrade. But the question we should ask is "WHY" why carrying out these development right now? The answer is "election" This is not new, this is one of the oldest way of buying people to vote.

    Lau Province $50,000.

    Sitiveni Weleilakeba:$150,000:
    Lau Province: 50,000 shares

  188. $1MILIION TO BUILD A BRIDGE.
    THATS OK.

WHAT ABOUT THE $15MILLION they used to upgrade 15 KILOMETERS of gravel road in Navosa?

WITHOUT A GOVERNMENT AUDIT THIS GOVERNMENT HAS LOST CREDIBILITY.

What we have here are regime supporters who jump and down and are very happy when Danimarama wipes his arse and throw the toilet paper towards them and they treasure his toilet paper.

THATS WHAT YOU REGIME SUPPORTERS ARE.BRAINLESS IDIOTS.

WHERE THE FARK IS THE GOVT AUDIT FROM 2006 TO NOW?

    BASICALLY DANIMARAM'S GOVT LACKS INTEGRITY.
I PITY THE FIJIANS WHO ARE DUMB ENOUGH TO FOLLOW THIS ARSEHOLE.

YEAH HAVE A NICE BRIDGE BUT YOU'VE LOST ALL THE SCHOLARSHIPS.
THEN IN 10 YEARS TIME YOU HAVE MORE UNEDUCATED FIJIANS....and more poverty....
but at least we have a nice bridge woohoo!

  189. ""MY PEOPLE PERISH FOR A LACK OF VISION""

Perhaps if your people had put more effort into being worthy candidates for those scholarships they would have got them.

Why should my tax money be wasted helping those that have not helped themselves.

Get over your scholarships and admit the reasons your people lost out.

  190. Army, I'm sure you're a paragon of courage yourself, but it's Ro Teimumu I've seen standing up against these thugs, not someone who calls himself "Army". Btw, that seems like a pretty discredited name in Fiji these days, thanks to their RFMF's role in Bainimarama's treason. Just saying.

Interesting tour d'horizon you give us. It seems pretty clear your sympathies are with the NFP. Fair enough, but I personally hate to see any opposition votes siphoned away from SODELPA, which has the only realistic chance of unseating Bainimarama, if he plays fair, which he never does. Call me old-fashioned, but I support SODELPA's agenda to restore democracy, end coup culture, respect the rule of law, bring back majority rule and protect minority rights.

It's true that previous governments didn't complete King's Road. They did do other things, however. Bear in mind, too, that several were hampered by the RFMF from accomplishing all they could. Unlike the current regme, they exercised some sense of fiscal responsibility. They didn't borrow hundreds of millions more dollars against our nation's credit, and what they did borrow, they borrowed lawfully. They needed the support of Parliamentarians and were accountable to Parliament, and they had to follow contracting rules. They couldn't just pick contractors on the basis of how much money they got kicked back in graft. They also had to follow laws; they couldn't just make up decrees and change them willy-nilly as they went along. They could also be challenged in court. They had to work with Fiji labour unions. They used Fijian labour, not a bunch of Chinese scab coolies. They didn't pocket a percentage of the contract, which is why the cost of road construction was considerably lower before this regime came into power.

In short, it isn't fair to compare with oranges what in this case are rotten apples.

  191. Why should my tax money be wasted on inflated road projects just so someone can skim contracts and get himself elected by using my money illegally?

  193. Fijian Holdings again? Yawn . . .

Qarase commited no crime, nonetheless he was punished as though he had, just so he could be disqualified from running for office.

He went to prison. He did the time. So why is someone bringing that up again?

Clearly someone is trying to distract us from the main issue, which is Bainimarama's treason.

No doubt those cheats still had more potential.

  195. Yeah, with their skill at cheating, they should be able to find a job in the regime.

  196. FHL shares and animal farmJuly 9, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Re FHL shares, the only people yawning are those who benefited from this scam, and want to see this shameful exploitation re-swept under the carpet. Insider trading is a crime. It is also morally corrupt for individual families to hold more shares than entire provinces. it can never be justified, unless you equate indigenous fijians society to animal farm, where some greedy pigs are more equal than others. This is what they tell the 'kaisi' while filling their own pockets.

  197. Labour's killersJuly 9, 2014 at 4:14 PM

Loved the photo in the Fiji Sun of Mahen Chaudhry and Ben Padarath outside the courts in Suva. What do these two have in common? They are both killers. They both killed innocent women. Ben killed a poor girl when he was driving a car while drink. You can see her memorial on Queen Elizabeth Drive at the spot where she was thrown from his car and killed. Mahen also killed a women pedestrian while drink driving in the 1970s. He was sent to jail after the judge said he had treated her worse than an animal by driving off and leaving her on the road. If he had stopped she would have been saved. This is the Labour Party. It is a party of killers. If you don't believe me, ask around. It is all perfectly true. They must never be allowed back.
