Bainimarama quiet on capture of Fiji soldiers as nation asked to pray

Unconfirmed: This photo is reportedly that of the captured 44 soldiers and has been posted on Facebook with the information it was tweeted by Al Qaeda. We are checking further about the claim.

Prayers are going out to the 43 Fiji soldiers captured by rebels in Syria but the hostage situation was always a possibility.

182 soldiers left with fanfare in July last year with the military commander at the time, Frank Bainimarama, rashly promising to despatch as many as 500 men to help the UN.

He noted the soldiers could be going to their death but couched it in language that gloried war: "Etched on their faces was the pride, the determination and commitment that we are certain will carry them for the mission ahead."

Concerns for the safety of the men were raised via this blog but the peacekeeping post was too much of a show of strength for Bainimarama to ignore.
Fiji soldiers farewell families last year

Forty three lives are now at risk although RFMF commander, Mosese Tikoitoga, says he's been informed the soldiers are unharmed. Tikoitoga admits, though, he hasn't been able to contact the men directly and has called on the  nation to pray for the soldiers.

C4.5 wishes for the safe return of the men but as the country holds its breath praying for their safety, it must be noted with all due respect to the fat belly army of Fiji – they were not captured.

Filipino soldiers stood their ground
Consistent in the reports coming out of Golan Heights is this: the Fiji soldiers surrendered their weapons at first sight and were then taken hostage, unlike the 38 Filipino soldiers who stood their ground and fought the rebels.

The top brass in Fiji are to blame for sending to a combat zone the soldiers in lieu of money without proper training and weapons, including protective gear.

The Fiji public must be aware that Golan Heights is not a UN peacekeeping mission but an active combat zone – this means if you are fired upon you are to engage and kill.

So much then for the army who find it easy to oppress its own unarmed citizens: they surrendered at the first sight of 150 Muslims believed to be the Al Nusra group.

The military in the Phillipines meanwhile says it is in direct contact with its soldiers.

A spokesperson says an English-speaking Fijian soldier had been sent by rebels to tell the Filipinos to give up their weapons but the Filipinos stood their ground.

“Our soldiers are prepared, trained and capable of dealing with this situation and will take risks to fulfil our commitment to international security and peace.

“The peace contingent has the right to defend its position and the units in line with United Nationals protocols and rules of engagement.”

No word as of yet from Bainimarama, who coincidentally didn't fly out with the Golan Heights soldiers last year in a show of moral support. He was instead welcoming a delegation from Russia.

The Un Peacekeepers in Golan Heights are there as a buffer between Israel and Syria. Syria are too busy engaged with civil war to invade Israel or mount an attack.

The UN Peacekeepers should all be removed ASAP until the region quietens down. They have no purpose there as Syria is preoccupied.

If the Filipino UN peacekeepers open fire on the rebels they will endanger the lives of the Fijians.

So what is the UN doing? Sending in an Irish contingent. That is one way to pour petrol on the fire, unless the mission is to get all Peacekeepers out safely.

The US are already bombing rebels in Iraq. The rebels hate all westerners including the UN peacekeepers. If this situation escalates the rebels will not hesitate to start using the UN Peacekeepers as "shields".

These rebels are known for their incredible cruelty. They will not hesitate to kill any perceived enemy...and they won't waste bullets.

The UN should withdraw the Peacekeepers NOW. They can return them for their original purpose when the region stabilises.

The bible says "only a fool gets between two fighting dogs". The Syrians will assist the peacekeepers in any way they can. The rebels do not want foreign interference.

The Golan Heights Mission can be placed on hold temporarily. Lets hope so.

God Bless and protect all of the Peacekeepers. This is not their fight.

Those Filipino soldiers holding out against al Nusra are from the Philippine Army Ranger battalion.

They are Special Forces troops who have been active in Mindanao fighting the Moro Liberation Front and the Islamic militants in the Southern Philippines for the last twenty years in the counter insurgency.

They are crack Special Forces troops and will have organised defensive fighting positions which al Nusra would have definitely seen in doing their Advance work prepping for that op.

Al Nusra has not attacked them for good reason. They are a hard target and hard targets will cost lots of men to overcome.

Instead they used a Fijian boy to go ask them to surrender. The Filipino's told the Fijian boy, sorry baraca we don't have any white flag in this position.

The Fijian soldiers have done the correct and wise thing. They no their mission, to protect Israel and Syria from each other, not to involve themselves in Syria's civil war.

Kudos to the Fijians. They may have saved the lives of many UN peacekeepers. The Filipinos do not need to protect the site as it is not a threat between Israel and Syria. They should have laid down their arms and left the region.

This is why Fijian UN Peacekeepers are so highly valued. They can be friends of the Israelis and friends of the Palestinians without getting involved in the politics. They are world class Peacekeepers.

I am anti-Bai and Khai but I highly respect these well trained Fijians. May God protect them and return them safely to their homeland.

No use carrying those M4's and M16's if they are simply to be surrendered.

That is why those M4's and M16's and Minimi's and the Browning 50 cal are there on the APC's.

They aren't ceremonial paraphernalia.

How much logistics (ammo and weapons) were handed over to al Nusra Coup Four Point Five ?

Any idea ?

Obviously the APC's were handed over with 50 cals on top.

And the M4's and the Glocks and the M16's and the squad weapons

Anything else surrendered ?

Filipino peacekeepers ready to defend themselves"

MANILA, Philippines — The 75 Filipino peacekeepers surrounded by Syrian rebels in Golan Heights are sufficiently armed and are ready to defend themselves if necessary, the military said Friday.

Philippine officials remain optimistic that the hostage crisis will be resolved peacefully but are nevertheless prepared for any eventuality.

"Our soldiers are prepared, trained and capable of dealing with these situations and will take risks to fulfill our commitment to international security and peace," Armed Forces spokesman Maj. Gen. Domingo Tutaan Jr. said in a press briefing.

"The peacekeeping contingent has the right to defend its position and the units in line with the UN (United Nations) protocols and rules of engagement," he added.

Syrian militants occupied the camp of 43 Fijian peacekeepers at the UN Disengagement Force (UNDOF) at around 10 a.m. Syrian time (3 p.m. in the Philippines). They demanded that the Fijian peacekeepers surrender their firearms. Upon surrendering their firearms, the 43 Fijian soldiers were taken hostage.

The Syrian anti-government forces then surrounded the Philippine peacekeepers' camps and also demanded the surrender of firearms.

"The Philippine peacekeepers held their ground and demonstrated their resolve to defend their positions. They did not surrender their firearms as they may in turn be held hostage themselves," Armed Forces public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said.

The refusal of Filipino soldiers to yield to the rebels' demand resulted in a standoff.

SYRIAN REBELS SURROUNDED dozens of defiant Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights today and demanded they give up their weapons, hours after taking 43 Fijian soldiers hostage, authorities said.

Seventy-five Filipino members of a United Nations’ peacekeeping force were defending two posts on the Syrian side of Golan Heights, and were prepared to fight back rather than surrender, their commander said.

“We can use deadly force in defence of the UN facilities,” Ancan said.

“I (would) just like to emphasise our troops are well-armed, they are well-trained… they are well-disciplined warrior peacekeepers.”

Anonymous said...

On Wednesday Syrian rebels, including militants from the Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, stormed one section of the buffer zone and exchanged fire with Israeli troops.

A day later the fighters captured 43 Fijians, forcing them to surrender their weapons then taking them hostage.

Ancan said the rebels then used an English-speaking Fijian hostage to relay their demand to the Filipino peacekeepers to surrender, who instead refused and stood their ground.

Those Filipino Rangers are Special Forces Combat Troops sent by Manila to the Golan after the regular Philippine Army soldiers were attacked last year by Armed elements.

They are trained to fight. Every instinct in their body is honed to fight because that is their role within the Philippine Army Order of Battle.

Every man is prepared to die on his feet in those two positions. And he will take at least two to three al Nusra with him before he goes.

That is what they do and have been doing for the last two decades in Combat operations. They are war fighting troops.

Those Islamic Al Nusra warriors know the real deal when they see it.

That's respect for the Filipino warriors and absolute contempt for the Fijian when they use a Fijian to do a boys work of sending a message to the Filipino warriors.

BAGHDAD — Another contingent of United Nations peacekeepers was caught in a standoff with Syrian rebels on Friday, a day after an armed group captured 44 peacekeepers in the area near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The confrontation on Friday involved 72 Filipino soldiers serving in the United Nations mission along the demarcation line between Syria and the Golan Heights. The trouble there started after rebels, including the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda, seized control of the Quneitra border crossing, the only one in the area, from the Syrian Army on Wednesday.

On Thursday, 44 peacekeepers from Fiji were captured and 72 others were confined to their bases because of continued fighting in the area, the United Nations said. Then on Friday, the Philippine military said that in two places, its soldiers were in a standoff with rebels who had tried to storm their positions the day before.

A Philippine military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Domingo Tutaan, said from Manila that after rebels captured the Fijian contingent, they sent two messengers to the peacekeepers with demands that the Filipinos surrender their weapons. The general said the soldiers did not comply, and were prepared to defend their positions, as they are permitted to do under their United Nations mandate.

“They have appropriate provisions, both in terms of personal needs, food and ammunition,” General Tutaan said. “They can last there for a good number of days.”

So far, he said, there had been no direct clashes between the Filipino soldiers and the rebel fighters, and the United Nations and the Philippine military said they were working to resolve the situation.

In New York, a spokesman for Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general of the United Nations, said the organization was working to free the captives by communicating with parties inside Syria and with governments linked to Syrian rebel groups.

In a statement on Friday evening, the United Nations also said it had been given assurances that the Fijian soldiers were safe and had been “removed from an active battlefield to a safe area for their own protection.”

A number of rebel groups that seek to topple President Bashar al-Assad of Syria are fighting his forces near the Golan Heights. Fighters from the Nusra Front, the Syrian affiliate of Al Qaeda, were among those who seized the Quneitra crossing point on Wednesday. The even more radical Islamic State in Iraq and Syria did not appear to be involved.

No group has yet claimed publicly to have captured the Fijians, but one rebel brigade that is active in the area issued a statement saying the Nusra Front was responsible and calling on it to release the peacekeepers.

It was not clear why the rebels captured the peacekeepers. In the past, the Nusra Front has demanded ransom payments in exchange for hostages, but no such demand has been received so far. Some activists suggested that the Nusra Front wanted the captives not for ransom but as human shields, holding them to deter the Syrian government from shelling and bombing the area.

Rebel groups have captured United Nations peacekeepers in the Golan Heights area before, only to release them unharmed.

The peacekeepers serve in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, which also includes personnel from India, Ireland, Nepal and the Netherlands. It has been monitoring a cease-fire and military disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria in the area since 1974.

Philippine Syria troops 'attacked'

Breaking news

Philippine peacekeepers trapped by rebels in the Syrian Golan Heights are "under attack", Philippine Defence Minister Voltaire Gazmin says.

He said the assault had started early on Saturday, but gave no details on any casualties.

In recent days the Syrian rebels have taken 44 Fijian peacekeepers hostage in the area and surrounded 75 Filipinos manning two separate UN posts.

The rebels have also seized a crossing point into the Israeli-occupied Golan.

The Force Commander further stated that they stay in shelters and let the rebels into the position. The Phillipine soldiers have already abandoned all but one of their positions and have crossed into Israel. The Fijians did as were told and were escorted to the boarder with Israel where the a Israeli Liason Officer turned them back. The Fijian location was overwhelmed by 300 rebels as the Indian Force Commander told the Fijians to let them in. The Fijians are frustrated with the Indian Force commander who is totally lost and trying to run the Fijian battalion himself by over ruling the Fijian ground commanders.

One Philippine Rangers Unit breaks through al Nusra encirclement, whilst fierce fire fight continues with remaining Rangers Unit and al Nusra

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Syrian rebels holding dozens of Fijian U.N. peacekeepers hostage attacked Filipino troops in the Golan Heights on Saturday, Philippine officials said.

Philippine peacekeepers at one U.N. encampment were attacked, but those at another were "extricated," Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told reporters in a series of text messages, adding that the attack started early Saturday Syrian time.

Philippine military spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala told reporters, "There is an ongoing firefight, but all Filipinos are safe."

There were 40 Filipino troops in the encampment that came under attack, and 35 in the second, according to the Philippine military.

The Syrian rebels seized 44 Fijian peacekeepers on Thursday. The rebels then demanded that the 75 Filipinos manning two separate U.N. encampments 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) apart surrender their weapons, but they refused.

The situation of the peacekeepers, whose mission monitors a 1974 disengagement accord between Syria and Israel, remains "very, very fluid," the U.N. secretary-general's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters Friday at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

It's sad to see how civil-military relations in Fiji have fallen so low that some would actually gloat over the capture of Fijian soldiers by extremist rebels. This is the bitter fruit of the coup legacy created by Rabuka and Bainimarama.

It's also sad to see some people trying to use this opportunity for partisan political gain, such as accusing SODELPA supporters for being unpatriotic. Maybe some are, I don't know. I do know, though, that a traitor used what was supposed to be our army to seize power in Suva illegally and then used that power for his own selfish ends. The opposition parties like SODELPA are trying to unseat him, which seems pretty patriotic to me.

I pray for the safe release of our troops and the safety of the brave Filipinos. I also save a prayer for the people of Fiji, that we, too, might be released from our long captivity.

The comments about "lamusonas" here are coming from self-described FFP supporters. They say that regime opponents are lamusona, and liumuri their own army, but let's look at the record.

Who is the RFMF supposed to serve? Answer: the people of Fiji. Has it served us? No, it took us prisoner and made us serve it. Who did the liumuri here?

Who is the RFMF sworn to defend? Answer: the government and constitution of Fiji. Has it defended these? No, it overthrew our own government and trampled on our own constitution before rubbishing it completely. Liumuri.

Our military is also supposed to honour our flag, but no, they want to get rid of it and replace it with another design. Liumuri.

Instead of protecting our country and its government, our military surrendered itself to the control of a small cadre of officers unmistakenly engaged in acts of treason. And it's allowed these traitors to run roughshod over our nation for eight very long years. Lamusona.

And over these eight years, our military has mostly distinguished itself by bashing pregnant women and torturing unarmed prisoners. It backed down in every confrontation with the Tongan navy. And now it has meekly surrendered its position and its weapons in the Golan Heights. Lamusona.

The RFMF is a fucken joke. It's good for nothing but trying to intimidate its fellow citizens. It's become a pack of cowardly thugs posting anonymous comments to C4.5 from their roost at Clarendon House, when they're not too busy sodomising each other at the barracks. Craven and good for nothing.

Army is there for national security .. Not to secure one groups rights ... Get that lamu sonas ... Now read this lamu sonas ....

But Fijian Army Commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga told Reuters in an interview on Friday that he would not be recommending to his government that Fiji follow suit.

"If I was to make any recommendation, I would increase our forces in Syria. That would be my recommendation," he said by phone from Fiji.

"We will not make any recommendations of pulling out from the U.N. or any other engagement, because our contribution to U.N. peacekeeping - if we don't want to do this, then who else in the world would want to do this?"

He added that he was confident the Fijians would be released soon based on the strength of their contacts in the Golan Heights region.

Anonymous said...

Hey, you FFP guys, can't you give it a rest, even in this situation? Some of these soldiers are our sons and brothers. Stop trying to score cheap political points at their expense.

Anonymous said...

If Tikoitoga wants to increase the Fijian presence in the Golan Heights, then he should lead the next contingent there himself. Until he does that, it's hard to have any respect for the guy.

Anonymous said...

"Army is there for national security .. Not to secure one groups rights ... "

Yeah, that's how it's supposed to be. But in Fiji's case, the army is our biggest national security threat and is only here to secure one group's rights -- it's own!

ONE THING GOOD IF THEY (44 ARMY HOSTAGE) DIE SUPPORTING BAINIMARAMA OVERSEAS.

HERE IN SUVA WE ARE PAYING ALMOST $600 DOLLARS A WEEK TO KEEP A BODY IN THE SUVA MORTUARY AND OVER $1,000 FOR 2 WEEKS JUST TO REMOVE A DEAD BODY. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE COFFIN AND HEARSE.

SO IF THEY DIE DEFENDING BAINIMARAMA OVERSEAS OR IN SUVA HOPEFULLY BAINIMARAMA WILL HAVE TO FORK THIS AMOUNT. OR IF THEY DIE OVERSEAS THEN THEY OR THEIR RELATIVES DON'T HAVE TO BE STAB TWICE. ONE BY THE DEATH AND THE OTHER BY THE REGIME.

THIS IS AN ADVANTAGE AND REALITY OF DEFENDING BAINIMARAMA OR DYING ELSEWHERE. HOPEFULLY BAINIMARAMA PAYS FOR THE SUVA MORTUARY BECAUSE ONLY MUSLIMS ARE FREE FOR THE FIRST 2 DAYS IN SUVA. THE 3rd IS PAID AND TRIPLE THEREAFTER.

Fijian hostages have been moved out of the UNFOF area by al Nusra.

That is not good news

It means they will have been separated into small groups and taken to different locations.

In those situations a large group will never be kept together on the move because it will be risky for al Nusra. Chances of compromise are higher because that area is an operational theatre of war with the Syrian Army engaged with al Nusra.

(Reuters) 30.8.2014 - Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah said terrorism would soon spread to Europe and the United States unless it is quickly dealt with in the Middle East, the Saudi state news agency reported late on Friday.

The king made the statement during a reception for foreign ambassadors held in Jeddah.

"I ask you to convey this message to your leaders... Terrorism at this time is an evil force that must be fought with wisdom and speed," said King Abdullah. "And if neglected I'm sure after a month it will arrive in Europe and a month after that in America."

The world's top oil exporter shares an 800-km (500-mile) border with Iraq, where Islamic State militants and other Sunni Islamist groups have seized towns and cities.

Riyadh has long expressed fears of being targeted by jihadists, including some of its own citizens, who have taken part in conflicts in Iraq and Syria. Earlier this year, it decreed long jail terms for those who travel abroad to fight.

Britain raised its terrorism alert on Friday and Prime Minister David Cameron said Islamic State posed the greatest ever security risk to the country.

This comes down to vetting of personnel sent to these Operations.

Key decisions during critical times are very important. Sometimes the soldier in the ground has to exercise initiative.

The Philippine Rangers were sent there because of experience and merit. That is why they made their assessment and tactical decisions on the ground not to surrender as they read the situation unfolding before them.

The Command HQ does not see the battlefield. Any Orp Ord coming down from Command HQ can be modified based on what is happening at the tactical level and the best person to make that decision is the OC at the position.

They made two serious blunders.

They left their secured position and then they boarded vehicles belonging to the al Nusra.

Once they left their secured and fortified position they were no longer covered or protected. They were out in the open.

Then they made the second mistake which was to board al Nusra vehicles instead of use their own APC's which has 50 cals and is armoured.

Once on board those al Nusra vehicles they would have been very easily disarmed and defenceless and taken to wherever al Nusra had designated as the post Op fall back position.

It shows that there are serious issue up at QEB with preparation and vetting of soldiers for missions.

Ke sa ka ga ni veikilai ia e sa na vaka beka oqo na kenai rairai.

Needs a serious review.

Well I would of thought that defensive procedures would include a fall back strategy if zone was likely to be overrun, didn't the senior fiji contingent think of that? I mean they could have retreated to the Philipino base.

Just wondering what sort of defensive strategies the fiji contingent had in mind when engage? Or were they only depending on the bula spirit and free food to children.

Did any of the senior officers pass any sort of tactical training or any training for that matter?

I am just wondering if these are the same soldiers that created havoc in fiji and hurt the nation that killed and beat fiji citizens even after they swore an oath to protect and serve?

If they are, then only GOD can save them because it is the cries of the nation that's condemning them...

Sir , 1049 : Fiji army guys .. Are probably some of the least educated in the world ( fact ) , no disrespect . The are under that strategic command on UN not a Fiji commander .

This is what is happening : We are very close to a 3rd world war .:
1. I love the United States , not because I think they are a great nation , I think that too , but the people are great , I studied there and my parents and siblings live there . It is not to say that they are innocent , they have to engage in some serious underhanded techniques to play " global big brother " .
2. China and Russia pose " clear and present danger " . Russia has now invaded Ukraine - usa does not intervene ..,, Syrian president ... Butchered millions of his people .. And now 3 million Syrians are refugees .....now Syrian president won an election .. And legitimised his cruel killings .... ( so to speak ) .please note : Usa supported bashar before .... And also armed these same rebels ( Isis ) ... Who have now spilled over in Iraq . Usa has a dual policy there : they support the rebels in Syria and not Iraq . The rebels are not educated ... Nor do they understand the policies of the western allies . To Add fuel to fire : Islam has been under immense scrutiny , tirades , insults , it is now the most misunderstood , and hated religion - I think that's wrong .
America recently negotiated with terrorists and released prisoners from their capture in 2001 in return for some journalists . The prisoners will be held by Qatar in a deal by the usa
I'm not saying that bending backwards every time extremists make demands . It might pay some heavy dividends if they at least listen to what they have to say . You see , young men are lured into terrorism , because they feel that they are under fire ... Risk of being alienated and wiped out . They join these terrorists groups with little knowledge , and enormous brain washing by old thoughts ... Old mullahs .

3. Israel - the silent killer - they are the key to Middle East peace . Give Gaza residents. It's independence and forget about a block of land that is smaller than Viti Levu ..... The entire world knows that the citizens of Gaza deserve better . Hamas will have no excuse then .
4. North Korea - the cowboys of the east . They are ready to draw guns ... They will gladly support Russia and any other rogue nation against it's sworn enemies .
The entire war from Russia to Middle East can and is spilling over into other countries .... It's a matter of time ... Whilst this is a birds overview ... And foreign affairs is very very very complicated ... We the common people can only hope for peace .

First Bai purged his senior officers like Kadavulevu and Baledrokadroka, second Bai has other senior officers fill senior Govt positions including Cabinet posts, diplomatic posts, etc, third junior officers are made to fill in the vacancies.

Is there is any wonder then that there is even less good leadership in RFMF? This incident in Golan Heights no doubt shows this.

And if Bai wins this election, it is possible that more officers will join the civil service or purged leaving an even more inexperienced officer corp to lead.

Upon the shoulders of this RFMF does Bai leave the responsibility to provide domestic stability (as per the 2013 Constitution) for the next generation or two.

Bai's mistakes before and since 2006 are coming to roost.

LEARN FROM MAJOR-GENERAL (Retired) SITIVENI RABUKA:
When eight of Rabuka's soldiers were captured, he personally went to negotiate with the PLO and through the PLO (Fatah) to the Lebanese National Movement and Amal - the forerunners of Hezbollah. The leader of the group that was captured was Sarasau, now living in USA. Rabuka had a Court of Inquiry assembled to find out if there was any culpable neglect on the part of the local commander, then tightened up the Standing Operating Procedures (SOP) to prevent a recurrence. He did not ask UNIFIL HQ for help; he only sent in his SITREP (Situation Report) that some were captured and that he had gone directly to PLO-controlled Tyre pocket to negotiate for their release.

@Fijileaks

It was possible to negotiate with Fatah because they were trying to work with the UN at that time. Arafat was courting the UN very strongly in trying to sort out the issues in Southern Lebanon and the Palestinian camps.

Amal and Fatah were not at loggerheads during that period but it changed when the PLO went head to head with the SLA and the Amal splintered into factions which led to the Hizballah being formed.

The geopolitical situation in Syria is very different. Our Government is in alliance with Iran who are one of the opponents of al Nusra.

It would be a serious mistake to send Khaiyum to negotiate their release.

Khaiyum is Ammadhiya.

al Nusra is Wahhabi.

One of the stated objectives of Wahhabism is to purify Islam.

To them Ammadhiya is heresy. That is why the Taliban in Pakistan targets Ammadiya and all across the Middle East they are doing the same.

There's another sect which they also target and its the Azidi's because they consider them to be devil worshippers.

Anyone who has ideas about sending Khaiyum to negotiate with the Wahhabi mullahs in the UAE has to understand this situation.

The good news in this crisis s that Fiji's peacekeeping duties are coming to an end. The RFMF has become useless in the role. Years of US sanctions and a politicised officer corps have really taken their toll.

Without peacekeeping missions overseas, it's unlikely that Fiji's army would ever have become strong enough to seize power. When the British left in 1970, there were only around 200 serving military personnel. UN peacekeeping operations in Lebanon and Sinai generated a tenfold increase by 1986. The next year, Fiji witnessed its first military coup. Some 20,000-25,000 Fijians have been deployed on UN missions since independence—a lot for a country of fewer than 1 million.

Those deployments are coming to an end. Discriminating consumers like the UN have just lost their confidence in the bullshit the regime has been peddling.

==========================

More than 70 Filipino U.N. peacekeepers are now safely away from Islamist militants in the Golan Heights as clashes continue against al-Qaeda-linked Syrian rebels, according to the Philippine military.

Thirty-two peacekeepers were been rescued after militants surrounded their camp, trapping them for two days, activists and officials said.

Other U.N. peacekeepers were able to flee from a different encampment that was also surrounded by rebels of the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, they said.

Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said Sunday in the Philippine capital, Manila, that the remaining Filipino peacekeepers separately moved to positions that were safely away from any further threat.

According to Catapang, the Filipinos were surrounded by the rebels and had to return fire in self-defense before managing to escape after a seven-hour siege.

Catapang said: "We may call it the greatest escape."

The clashes come after Syrian rebel groups, including the al-Nusra Front, overran the Quneitra Crossing — located on the frontier between Syrian- and Israeli-controlled parts of the Golan Heights — on Wednesday, seizing 44 Fijian peacekeepers.

The peacekeepers are a part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) which has been in place since 1974 to maintain the cease-fire between the Israeli and Syrian forces, the website states.

UNDOF has 1,223 troops from six countries: Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands and the Philippines.

23 September 2013:

A confidential Ministry of Finance memo has revealed the Fiji Government had no money to
send the first batch of 182 soldiers to serve as peacekeeping soldiers in the Golan Heights.

As a result, the Finance Ministry had to write to all government Ministries asking them to indentify and allocate any amount their respective budgets had to help fund the deployment of the soldiers.

Dated 8th July 2013, the memo is signed by the Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Filimone Waqabaca.

It says “this is an unbudgeted yet priority commitment of Government; hence Ministry of Finance will need to look for funds from within the approved 2013 budget to fund the UNDOF mission this year.”

The Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary further states “Ministry of Finance is requesting the support of all Ministries and Departments to start identifying funds from within your approved 2013 budget to be redirected to fund these critical extra budgetary requirements of Government.”

At the time, the military dictatorship had not revealed how much money was needed to send these soldiers overseas.

Either way, to fund this trip, selected projects, that would have benefited Fijians, might have had to be shelved to redirect the budgetary allocation for the RFMF soldiers.

Tactically the Philippine Marines made the right decisions.

They knew that they only had to hold their position and wait for backup. Which is exactly what they did.

Had they surrendered it would have been very difficult to send them support forces because they would have been moved, as is the case with the RFMF boys who have been captured and moved.

That is the difference between experience and inexperience.

Experience does not panic and makes tactical assessments that are sound. Inexperience panics and freezes with stress under pressure.

In war that costs heavily.

The Philippine Rangers are experienced Special Forces Operators who have been engaged in counter insurgency in the Southern Philippines for two decades. They are experienced and competent soldiers.

8 July 2013:

Mounting concern over Fiji troops safety in Golan Heights

The country's biggest political party says the regime doesn't have a mandate to send Fiji soldiers to the Golan Heights.

The Social Democratic Liberal Party says the decision to dispatch 183 soldiers almost two weeks ago and another 380 in coming weeks has been made arbitrarily.

A spokesperson, Dr Tupeni Baba, says Frank Bainimarama's decision to send Fiji troops into such danger is deplorable.

"The sending of a military contingent to a theatre of war or to any active service under the United Nations, even as peacekeepers in a new assignment, is a serious matter that should be taken only by an elected Government.

"This should be subjected to discussions in Parliament to ensure that all aspects of the issue - including the safety of personnel, the necessary provisions about their equipment, their rules of engagement and other necessary financial provisions, including health and welfare - are adequately provided for before any commitment is made."

Dr Baba told Coupfourpointfive any recommendation should have been approved by Parliament.

"It is the best way of ensuring that we take a very serious view about committing the lives of our men and women and in doing so, the Government ensures that such decision is not made lightly.

"It demonstrates also that the military is under the control of a civilian Government and bought by a Commander who is the Head of an unelected Government, who may not necessarily have the full understanding of the diplomatic and international implications of major decisions involving sending men and women in a new theatre of war."

Bainimarama had said he would send up to 500 troops when the first batch flew out, almost two weeks ago. He announced over the weekend in Honiara where he was ironically visiting the graves of five Fiji soldiers who were killed in the Second World War in the Solomons, that another 380 soldiers would leave for Golan Heights in coming weeks.

He also put his foot in it by showing off that Russia, who is reported to be trying to pull its troops out of Syria because of the danger, had offered its support - a faux paus observers say is a death warrant for our soldiers.

Dr Baba says there should be wide concern for the compromised position Fiji soldiers are now in.

"Syria is being armed by such powers as Russia and the rebels are being supported by the United States and its allies and Fiji's involvement is not only very dangerous and risky, but the military regime's recent overtures towards Russia will leave our troops vulnerable to charges that they are not neutral and independent as should be as UN peacekeepers, especially at this time in the Middle East."

9 July 2013:

In a startling amateur fashion Fiji’s military regime has put its own peacekeeping soldiers in grave peril by revealing which side of the Syrian conflict they support.

The revelation comes in an inept story on state Fiji Broadcasting which has Russia promising the 500 Fijian soldiers on the Golan Heights full support in Syria. Russia backs and arms the Bashar Hafez al-Assad regime which is being opposed by an array of rebel groups. Much of the Golan Heights is under rebel control and they will now learn, via Fiji Broadcasting’s Internet site, that the Fijians are with the Russians.

The Fiji Broadcasting story says Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medevdev has endorsed and promised assistance to Fijian troops in the Golan Heights. This was confirmed by Fiji coup leader Voreqe Bainimarama in the Solomon Islands, and a week after his visit to Moscow to watch the Rugby Sevens World Cup. Bainimarama thanked the Russian government for the support.

Russia says it stands by Fiji. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a strong backer of the Assad regime, singled out Fiji's contribution to United Nations peacekeeping efforts and the recent deployment of the first 182 Fijian troops in the Golan Heights as an example of Fiji's continuing commitment to engage with the international community.

So, never mind the fear of saying something on this blog to upset Nusra Front. The regime has already done plenty to do that, with the help of its special friends, the Russians.

10 July 2013:

Fiji's interim prime minister has announced another 380 Fijian troops will join the United Nations peacekeeping force in the Golan Heights.
Audio: Colonel Jone Baledrokadroka speaks to Pacific Beat (ABC News)

Commodore Frank Bainimarama says the contingent will leave Fiji at the end of the month.

He has also revealed that Russia, a key player in the Middle East, offered to assist Fiji with the UN deployment.

The Fijian troops will merge with the 183 troops that have already been sent to the troubled zone between Israel and Syria.

Colonel Jone Baledrokadroka, a former Land Forces commander in the Fiji Army, says the suspension of Fiji's defence relationship with Australia has given rise to its Russian partnership.

"Fiji is not really able to deploy to such UN hotspots without assistance from larger countries," Mr Baledrokadroka told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program.

"Equipment has been provided by the Russians for the deployment of the battalion."

Mr Baledrokadroka says the Fiji-Russia relationship will pose a risk to Fijian troops.

"We know that Russia has sided with the Assad government with Syrian forces," he said.

"Word will get out that the Fiji troops have been assisted by the Russians.

"Fiji will actually be tainted as being sort of siding with the Russians."

He says Fiji is using Russia as a sovereignty card against its regional neighbours.

"Fiji and other island states, ever since independence, have been playing the sovereignty card quite well against Australia, New Zealand and pretty much every other sort of global power," he said.

"It's used China well in the last six or seven years that the regime has been in power."

On the other hand, Mr Baledrokadroka says this is the first time Russia has played a substantive role in Fiji's peacekeeping forces.

"Russia has its own interests in the Middle East, and it is using Fiji," he said.

"Fiji has become like a mercenary."

Mr Baledrokadroka says Fiji's peacekeeping role is helping maintain Commodore Bainimarama's hold on power in the nation.

"It gives it a justification to have a bigger military within Fiji that is virtually a force against the people of Fiji," he said.

You all are asking why the Fijian soldiers gave up without a fight. Here is the truth!

Once they were surrounded, they called the HQ here for further orders. They were specifically ordered to surrender - not by Tikiotoga, but by Brother Aiyaz.

This was all pre-planned. I have been saying this for months on this forum. If you didn't believe me, it is your problem now.

Wake up tomorrow to the news of beheading and wait till next week when we take over Fiji and establish an Islamic caliphate.

Repent now and convert to Islam and be saved! Stop praying to your false gods...the jesus, the yahew, the vishnu, etc...

Allah is the true God!
Allah Hu Akbar!

Crikey, it seems that there's always a loonie bird raving on this website, whether it be Dharam Lingam, Semi Meo, the pink Nostradamus woman, or Tui Viti. Now it's this moron "Hanif". His name should really be "Asif". AS IF Syria had a navy for attacking Fiji. AS IF the world powers couldn't take out a Syrian vessel in a single salvo. AS IF we're supposed to be impressed because he can list the armament he looked up on Wikipedia. AS IF a Muslim extremist would share on this blogsite his group's plan for world domination. AS IF we'd believe this imbecile is even a Muslim. AS IF we want to read any more of his childish rants!

Someone inform australian intelligence & Nz intelligence to locate & reveal the true identity of Hanif. Because this is serious threat coming from a muslim.

A Lesson to be Learnt said...

SALVATION is found only in Jesus Christ - the gift of Christianity to the Indigenous people of Fiji and generations following..to "Israel" in Fiji and throughout the world.

The hateful spirit of the Anti-Christ is at work slaughtering Christians before us. The Anti-Christ aims to destroy "Israel", all God's people. Do not for once think you are safe in this nation - see who are they who are holding the nation at ransom - wake up!

There is a way for Fiji to be unyoked from the current rule of the spirit of the Anti-Christ through its chosen advocates. Many have become blinded! Many who once belonged to the Lord have turned to godless unchristian living! They choose the path of wickedness!

Let's not be misled by the powerful yet empty promises of materialism and lust for greed and riches. These evils are nothing for these are the end times.

Repent! Save your souls!

Choose Fiji First and the very soul of our nation Fiji is doomed!

The capture of our soldiers is a huge lesson, a message to those in power in the military and those who currently rule in Fiji.

To the military...stop and think.. return to the rules of Christian behaviour and love only that which is of Christ Jesus. Love and protect the people of God under your rule. Turn away from your greed for power and materialism and do what is right. Honor, glory and majesty belongs only to the Lord whom you serve and not to godless dictators.. yet of late you seem to glory in your wickedness and think that ill-treating your own people who cry out to the Lord day and night is no concern of yours. Do you really believe that the Lord who created you has no eyes?> You listen to wrong advice and devise evil plans against your nation.

Now wake up and see what the Lord is saying to you! See how powerless and confused you have become. The lives of these men who have been captured by those who serve the Anti-Christ are now at their mercy.

For God's people..remain faithful to the end..intercede, pray

Isaiah 52

The gospel proclaims liberty to those bound with fears. Let those weary and heavy laden under the burden of sin, find relief in Christ, shake themselves from the dust of their doubts and fears, and loose themselves from those bands. The price paid by the Redeemer for our salvation, was not silver or gold, or corruptible things, but his own precious blood. Considering the freeness of this salvation, and how hurtful to temporal comfort sins are, we shall more value the redemption which is in Christ. Do we seek victory over every sin, recollecting that the glory of God requires holiness in every follower of Christ? The good news is, that the Lord Jesus reigns. Christ himself brought these tidings first. His ministers proclaim these good tidings: keeping themselves clean from the pollutions of the world, they are beautiful to those to whom they are sent. Zion's watchmen could scarcely discern any thing of God's favour through the dark cloud of their afflictions; but now the cloud is scattered, they shall plainly see the performance. Zion's waste places shall then rejoice; all the world will have the benefit. This is applied to our salvation by Christ. Babylon is no place for Israelites. And it is a call to all in the bondage of sin and Satan, to use the liberty Christ has proclaimed. They were to go with diligent haste, not to lose time nor linger; but they were not to go with distrustful haste. Those in the way of duty, are under God's special protection; and he that believes this, will not hasten for fear.

As an ex-soldier - I AM ASHAMED! There are never bad soldiers - Only bad officers! We should not be surprised that this has happened when you look to the leadership and you find spineless characters like Bainimarama and Tikoitoga and the big jellyfish Naivalurua.

Regardless of how this whole joke happened, every one of the 43 (or is it 44?) should be charged for dragging the name of Fiji, the RFMF, all ex-soldiers, Safanaia Sukanaivalu etc etc in the mud.

You never give up your weapon!!!! Tarava saraga mai na luva tarausese!

"" As an ex-soldier - I AM ASHAMED! There are never bad soldiers - Only bad officers! ""

And officers are not soldiers I suppose?

Typical blame someone else attitude the Fijian mentality thrives on.

Back in Fiji we have been bullied around for 7 years. The incident occurred in the Golan Heights have helped expose who our Fiji soldiers really are !

These cowards have been terrorizing Fiji with their military styled coup d'etat bullcrap all these time and when they realized that the threats were real, cowardly decided to lay down their weapons and surrendered in broad daylight !

Huh! ...What a joke ! The Brig General idiot Tikoitoga had spilled the beans saying that Fiji soldiers had made their wise decisions in surrendering. Oi.... because the threat was now real ?

So the most feared ' lamunaso ' soldiers from the South Sea Islands were too scared to engage real enemies for the first time and have decided to chicken out ?

For our fake soldiers, maybe there were no cassava patch to hide in the Golan Heights and that was why they have decided to use their common sense according to their 2 I.C. Brig General Tikois*na ? LOL !

I had wished if the real culprit No.1 Boss was there to show his soldiers how a demo 'Side-stepped manoeuvre' is done when saving thy ass from enemy line !

A box full of diapers could help in combat ! That could save the ' good reputation ' of RFMF !

You show how shallow you are in matters of leadership! Of course officers are also soldiers if you need to simplify it for yourself...........my point is that, as has been proven in this case.....the quality of the leadership is very questionable and wanting (and therefore BAD)..........if the officers had said 'We are soldiers, the tools of our trade are our weapons, without our weapons we are nothing.......therefore we fight!'.......the soldiers would have fought!!!!! Sega ni sa sona levu ga o turaganivalu esa tukuna me sa vakadavori na i yaragi! If you lose some soldiers in the ensuing fight.....thats why you put the uniform on in the first place.......at least you go back home and face the families of the dead as a proud officer........and not a shamed one that has been proven to be a coward on the battlefield!

Next thing you know, they will allow the RFMF to grow beards because they might freak out at the sight of blood when they nick themselves shaving in the mornings!

Voreqe tells us to pray. But who do we pray to now and for what? Khaiyum prays to allah the moon god and so do his Al Nusra brothers. They are praying that their will shall be done. And rightly so. So what about Khaiyum, what will he and his father be praying for? Someone should ask him. Its a matter of national interest since his family became the rulers of Fiji.

I agree with Anony Aug 31:1;13.....the Govt should be seen directing calls and reporting to the people. They owe it to the nation. We demand PM and AG and Ministers to be the forefront of all of this. When they are not seen or heard on this issue, then they are not fit to lead the Govt. This is the first crisis in the ME from our boys. There can be a second or third. If they win, what guarantee that they will show their face???
Conclusion: Unfit to lead the nation. Only campaigning for their healthy pay pack and monies donated under the table....Oh sorry I may have said something wrong.....but how can Mary buys a mansion that cost millions? Oh shit again Im sorry...connections do count. Lol!
