Fiji's Sudoku ballot paper confusing voters

Voters set up to fail: Khaiyum's 'democratic' ballot paper.

Just 39 days to go to the elections and the heat is on for political parties to convince people to vote for them.

Over the last few days parties have been at each other's throats, instead of showing unity and focusing on educating voters about the complicated voting system the regime has come up with.

A few candidates have reported to us that people still don't  know how to vote using the new Sudoku-type ballot paper.
Remember, each voter will have to choose a number from 135-414. To make matters even trickier, the numbers are so small they are sure to confuse many voters, let alone those who are uneducated.

Many will be tempted to enter the polling booth with the number of their chosen candidate written down somewhere, (can you blame them?) but they risk up to 10 years jail.

The media, meanwhile, continues to promote Fiji First, allowing Frank Bainimarama to hog the top spots on their news.

The dictator is traveling to Auckland this weekend to campaign there after the New Zealand government granted him a visa.

Kiwi PM, John Key, insists he will have nothing to do with Bainimarama and no arrangements have been made for the coup leader to have special accommodation or security.

Predictably, the regime trolls have taken to working overtime on this blog spreading rumours, making sexual comments about women candidates, creating religious hate speech and hatching divisions among political parties.

Trolls visiting C4.5 as often as 70 times a day

Our stats show these regimes trolls are on the blog for up to eight hours a day and are from Clarendon House, Fiji Post and Telecommunications and Suva Central.

Some of them are visiting C4.5 as many as 70 times a day.
We urge political parties to remember what is at stake and who the enemy is and to focus on making votes count  instead of playing the game the regime wants you to play.

People also need to remember the many crimes of the regime: the illegal coup, the illegal Consitution, the illegal Decrees, the military thuggery, torture and deaths, the  oppression of unions, the GCC and Methodist Church along with media censorship - and who is at the heart of all of the rot in Fiji - Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.

As Sun Tsu said: "Know thy enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated. When you are ignorant of the enemy but know yourself, your chances of winning or losing are equal. If ignorant both of your enemy and of yourself, you are sure to be defeated in every battle."

I think Bhai and EyeArse have loudly torn down the institutions that give Taukeis special place as indigenous people…eg BLV abolished, Church influence been trimmed, chiefs told to focus on villages, drink homebrew under trees and not involved in national issues and politics, promise of easing up acquisition of Fijian lands for leasing to others etc….things that are special to Taukeis…these are matters that have troubled Indians for a long time and are behind all the communal and political ill feelings in the past. But what Bhai has done is to stir up Taukei resentment and because of EyeArse’s significant part played in this anti Fijian move Muslims have been thrown up as enemies of Taukeis. These anger from Taukeis will fester and grow if not addressed. Am sure that Taukeis have grown to feel brotherhood with Indians much quicker since independence and if we continue to have patience and allow the natural progress that had been happening up to 2006 under democratic systems we would resolve our communal differences very well without all the drama and angst associated with Bainimarama Dictatorship and lack of consultation with Fijians,,,coloured by extreme arrogance and violence and continuous threats. The cases of many inter-communal marrisges since independence is a good sign of the 2 communities getting on together very well,,,we go to school together, work together, play games together, join same social clubs and muck around together..inevitable we will get on well together increasingly if given time to grow together under unimterrupted democratic parliamentary environment where the rule of law is paramount. Not the Bainimarama approach of tortures, murders, unaccountable rules by decrees, continuous media control, threats unaccountable use of Govt expenditures, control of judiciary and sheer thuggery by Bainimarama.

The word “aboriginal” is universal not specific to Australia. It means “inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists;”.

Australian means citizen of Australia. Fijian means citizen of Fiji. Why is that so hard for the racists to understand? I hate Frank and Khaiyum but after his recent outburst, Qarase has shown SODELPA’s intentions.

“God gave Fiji to the Fijians”. My God is not a real estate agent. Have a good look around the world to see what happens when people claim to have some GOD GIVEN RIGHT.

Educated itaukei will not vote for SODELA whilst they continue allowing a washed up, racist, has been to make such offensive and discriminatory public comments.

I would like to hear Amnesty International's opinion on Qarase's stupid comments.

"" Each voter will have to choose a number on the ballot paper numbered from 135-414. To add to the complication, the numbers are so small that is sure to especially confuse voters who are uneducated. ""

So are we to understand that in Fiji educated people can read small numbers but uneducated people can only read large letters.

So that suggests that because I now have to wear glasses to read I am becoming less educated.

God help Fiji if this if this is the sort of logic used by those opposing any government.

David Tamani, good comment. Keep em coming!

Editor, vinaka for outing the regime trolls. Eight-hour shifts at Clarendon House! It's bad enough that the regime surpresses the truth, but to pay trolls to deliberately lie to, confuse and incite racial and religious hatred between segments of its own population is reckless, irresponsible, and criminal behaviour.

I was thinking about the claim that the army is confiscating the voter registration cards of its personnel. Why in heaven would it do that? Surely it doesn't want to disenfranchise its own people! Well, in a sense I believe it wants to do exactly that, at the behest of the illegal regime.

I suggest the following scenario:

The RFMF confiscates all voter registation cards. Personnel are assured they will still be able to vote: their voting station will be in the camp. Casting their votes at the camp, some soldiers will be afraid to vote their consciences for fear their true preferences will be discovered, subjecting them to regime reprisal. Others might not be intimidated, but it won't really matter, because holding the voting ballots of all personnel, the commander can ensure that all but a small handful are cast for Fiji First, even if some must be destroyed and other ballots substituted in their place. Whether it did or not, the RFMF will be recorded as voting in near unanimity for Fiji First.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 4:18, no, it doesn't necessarily mean that in Fiji uneducated people can only read large letters. It could simply mean that they're more easily confused. That strikes me as a fair assumption, although I can easily understand why you're one of those confused.

Anonymous said...

Ah, but one could also say that it does not unnecessarily mean something. We can all play on words.

That's a good one, confused with small letter but not large ones. Boy, let's just hope they understand the order they are in.

Anonymous said...

They won't. That's the idea. The regime wants to create confusion, in order to exploit the confusion.

You can spend all your life away from Fiji and if you have acquired dual citizenship under Khaiyum's Decree in 2009 you can vote in his general election; BUT if you are a Fijian citizen and had been away from Fiji for further study for 18 months, and wanting to stand against him in September election, you CAN NOT under his amended Electoral Decree.
What a joke. The election is not free and fair.

The public should consider that:

(a) The Bainimarama Government has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers money encouraging the voter registration of Fiji citizens living overseas so that they can have a say in electing some candidate for the parliament, even if they have Permanent Residency of and presumably some commitment to other countries.

(b) Civil servants, even if they have been out of the country for the last two years “on government business”, may still be eligible as candidates for the elections, and may even belong to political parties, according to the Permanent Secretary of the PSC.

(c) BUT an ordinary Fiji citizen, like Ms Makareta Waqavonovono, a former Legal Aid and committed senior Fiji government official, who has been overseas for more than 18 months out of the last two years, is declared legally ineligible to be a candidate by a sudden last minute change of the law on the 31st of July 2014, just a month before the elections, after Ms Waqavonovono has already been announced as a candidate by the National Federation Party.

Miki Asi punching out any perceived rivals to his paymaster
The moribund Fiji Law Society or one of its members, might want to ask the general question if laws are being changed to suit a specific circumstance or individual.

But more specifically, the public can ask why Ms Makareta Waqavonovono, a former senior civil servant, has been overseas for the last two years.

First, she has been guilty of bringing great credit to Fiji by working for AusAID and the Australian Government, arguably the most important donor to Fiji.

Second, she has been using her valuable legal skills in the Solomon Islands, a valuable member of the Melanesian Spearhead Group which Fiji often takes pride in helping, by providing much needed skilled human resources, similar to those possessed by Ms Waqavonovono.

Third, Ms Waqavonovono apparently has had the unpatriotic desire to waste her time and money by studying overseas (in Australia) and acquiring further educational qualifications that will undoubtedly be of great benefit to Fiji.

But with this latest decree by Mr Aiyaz Khaiyum (Attorney General and, apparently without any conflict of interest, also the General Secretary of the Fiji First Party), Ms Waqavonovono has been banned from offering to voters, the use of her extensive legal experience in the Fiji Parliament, the most important public service arena there is, superior even to the Government..

Anyone with common sense knows who exactly is playing “Mickey Mouse” games in Fiji with the elections and our people’s lives.

In addition that woman was abroad filling her pockets for herself, not Fiji.

And the chances are, that now she can not fill her pockets as much as she would like in Fiji, she will disappear again. No great loss.

IT IS NOW CONFIRMED THAT ANASA VOCEA IS REPLACING SAINIANA RADRODRO AS THE NEW MEDIA MANAGER.This came about when Mrs Radrodro made a press release informing LQarase to refrain from making negative religious comments against other religions.CHECK FRIDAYS FIJI SUN 08/08/14 PAGE 3.The split is rearing its ugly head with Candidates backing their own supporters for posts within the Sodelpa Party.BUT QARASE'S COMMENTS AGAINST ISLAM WAS THE LAST STRAW, OTHER RACES, ESPECIALLY INDIANS, WHO HAD EARLIER SUPPORTED SODELPA NOW SEE THE REAL DEAL AND WILL NOW MOVE TO SUPPORT OTHER PARTIES.LQ COMMENTS HAS NOW CONFIRMED THAT HE AND SUPPORTERS ARE EXTREME HARDLINE NATIONALISTS. Butadroka is moderate in comparison.

Where is Ro Teimumu? BTW as a SODELPA supporter I am very disappointed with LQ. He can campaign on a whole lot of issues but he chooses instead to campaign on race issues. Very disappointing. It seems to me then that Qarase wants to set himself up for leadership come 2018. Very disappointing all round.

@ Anon 12.34am, c'mon Butadroka is still worser than LQ for proposing that all Indians be sent back to India.

What I find reprehensible in Qarase is that he is a very learned, well-accomplished guy yet he chooses to take the easier path of criticizing Indians and Muslims.

He does not have the courage to confront his followers to say that racism is WRONG!

But no he just bends with the firebrand Nationalist talk.

Qarase in other words is weak. He was weak in 2006 when confronting Bainimarama and the rampant corruption in his government and he will be weak in controlling his nationalist supporters if he gains leadership of SDL, excuse me, SODELPA.

Now that would be a give-away for Bainimarama.

So sad.

Protests expected for Bainimarama
07:41 Sat Aug 9 2014
AAP

Fiji's self-appointed prime minister Frank Bainimarama has dodged media on his arrival in New Zealand.
He is in Auckland to campaign to local Fijians ahead of his country's first elections since he came to power in a 2006 military coup.
A protest is planned to coincide with Mr Bainimarama's talk at Manukau's Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday - and posters advertising the protest label the leader a "dictator".
Media at Auckland Airport for his arrival on Friday were told the Department of Internal Affairs was facilitating his entry and he would not make any public appearances on arrival, Fairfax reported.
The leader of New Zealand-based group Coalition for Democracy in Fiji, Nikhil Naidu, has questioned the rationale of Mr Bainimarama's trip and said it could be a sign someone else may win the election.
The National Federation Party and the Soqosoqo party - which Mr Bainimarama overthrew - have also been in the country campaigning ahead of the September 17 election.

DEFEAT IS NOW CERTAIN said...

It's over whether Qarase caused it or not. Even if you don't believe the 86 per cent lead the Fiji Sun/Razor poll gives the PM, the Fiji Times/Tebbutt poll this morning has him with a winning margin of 60 per cent. The Fiji Times, which hates Bainimarama, goes on about Ro Teimumu closing the gap. But this poll was taken BEFORE Qarase told anyone who isn't indigenous that they will never be equal in Fiji because God says so. This will have destroyed a large part of SODELPA's vote. To win, it either needs to get every i'Taukei vote ( and that isn't going to happen) or a large i'Taukei vote and then some other races. That is what has been destroyed. There are two people responsible for this - Qarase and Ro Teimumu Kepa, who should have rejected his views immediately. Instead she has remained silent while the electorate places the noose around her neck. On September 17, she will surely hang and we will have the Baini has duly elected Fijian Prime Minister. Good one, SODELPA. Oppositions are supposed to try to win, not hand elections to their opponents on a plate. No wonder people are peeling off in disgust. When you lose your PR person, that tells you something. The person who is trying to sell you has given up on the product. It's over and all hope for our side is lost.

Why is Teimumu so silent on comments by Qarase? Who is the leader here?. Or maybe she is so used to reading prepared speeches only she cannot speak for herself. I wonder how far she went to school, maybe only up to primary level. But just because of her being a Ro was given a teaching role, you know GCC privileges because of who she was.If she cannot face this minor hitch, how can she face the world after the elections when she's opposition backbencher?

Anonymous said...

"Defeat is now certain", you forget to mention the worst part of the Fiji Times-Tebbutt poll, which is that 56 per cent of people in urban and peri urban areas intend to vote for Fiji First and only 17 per cent for SODELPA. This is the majority of people in Fiji, especially in the Suva-Nasinu corridor. If SODELPA can't do better than this, it is not only heading for a defeat but it will be a humiliating defeat. There are just not enough voters in rural areas to swing the result any other way. As you say this poll was taken before Qarase's racial and religious outburst. Very disappointing. Maybe we can start having some rational discussion about what is happening and how we can close the gap over the next month. The fool who posted hundreds of SODELPA ALL THE WAY slogans shows there are plenty more people than Qarase who are damaging our chances. We better get smart full speed because time is running out. If we see Qarase anywhere, can we please tell him to shut up!

Civil Servant will never vote for FF this is a fact.I mean 99.9%.

If you go to loan section of commercial banks there are more personal loan then business.

There are other private Loan Agencies in Fiji which is all time full.Go check credit union of all civil servants all time full, even private sector credit union can feel the pinch.

This FF is choking the working individual that affects family living standard.

I say no way the two media are giving a correct indication its the other way around.

Amnesty International says Mr Bainimarama's eight years in power have seen ongoing serious human rights violations fuel a climate of fear that must be brought to an end.

"A combination of draconian laws, a pattern of intimidation and harassment of those who are critical of the government, as well as reports of torture by the security forces, have created a climate of fear in Fiji," said Grant Bayldon, executive director at Amnesty International New Zealand.

Many economists will tell you that the majority only borrow money when they feel confident with their position and the economy.

So unless you actually know the reason people are borrowing, for food or a new TV, conclusions can be very misleading.

Do you know what people are borrowing money to buy?

Why did the Indians kicked out the British & Europeans from all

Do we want to change this?
you cannot force this changes down our throats as

But the change has to

we're going to let the Fijian community makes that decision

If Qarase is garnering the lion's share of SODELPA-related coverage, it is because the regime wants it that way. It tightly controls our media and its message.

I can only infer that the extra coverage for Qarase is designed to embarrass Ro Teimumu and foment division within SODELPA. I think we can safely assume, then, that the talk of a split within SODELPA is deliberately exaggerated by the regime. I strongly suspect that an analysis of such comments on this blogsite will show that Clarendon House is the provenace for much of it.

For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone could claim they were a SODELPA supporter but are now switching to Fiji First. I, too, am unhappy with SODELPA's strategy of playing to its Methodist iTaukei base, when it should be reaching out to all democratic elements of whatever race or religion. But for all of its lip service about multiculturalism, this regime has set back race relations and religious tolerance over its eight years of misgovernance. SODELPA is parochial in its outlook, but at least it doesn't share Fiji First's agenda of treason, thuggery, debt and thievery. If a SODELPA supporter were genuinely disillusioned with the party, I would think that the logical party to turn to would be the NFP or the PDP, which are more multicultural and still pro-democracy. I have no doubt that many of the self-identified "SODELPA supporters" switching to Fiji First are really regime trolls trying as usual to stampede public opinion with their lies. Real voters opposed by principle, patriotism and self-interest to treason and the suppression of their liberties would not so easily be swayed to support their oppressors.

This is what other races do not understand. It is Fijian custom and protocol that the Chief or leader does not usually do the talking. His or heralds or matanivanuas do the talking for the Chief.

This is why Ro Teimumu is not seen to be speaking much because Qarase does it for her. In her Burebasaga confederacy she has her own people in all the provinces and districts who know what to do. This has been a long established system of how Fijians through their responsibilities in their various vanuas send and receive messages from their Chiefs.

People who live in Fiji should try to understand the indigenous Fijians and their customs before they blurt out anything without thinking twice.

Bainimarama's visit 'disgusts' NZ Fijians
By Sophie Ryan
1:57 PM Saturday Aug 9, 2014
Commodore Frank Bainimarama. Photo / Greg Bowker
The presence of Fiji's interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama in Auckland has "disgusted" Fijians living in New Zealand.
Around 30 people holding placards and Fijian flags has marched in Manukau to the Vodafone Events Centre where Mr Bainimarama is holding a Fiji First festival to campaign for his political party ahead of elections in Fiji this year.
Protestor Shailendra Raju said it was "simply disgusting" that Mr Bainimarama was in Auckland this weekend.
"It's mind-boggling that after all that has happened the New Zealand government is willing to facilitate this," he said.
"I think the appeasement policy of John Key's government has gone too far."
He said he felt the government had "turned a blind eye" to evidence the elections in Fiji were not fair.
When the protestors arrived at the gates of the Vodafone Events Centre they were told to keep their protest to the road.
The protesters were told Mr Bainimarama hadn't arrived yet and to keep the protest to the road.
Protestors became enraged and demanded to be let in by security.
One of the organisers of the protest Frank Robalakadava said New Zealanders should be angry the government has allowed Mr Bainimarama in to the country.
"The whole international community knows he is holding the whole of Fiji hostage at the point of a gun."
Mr Robalakadava came to New Zealand as a refuge in 2009.
"We want to be visible and drive a point here that we don't want him in New Zealand. New Zealand has never allowed a dictator in here before. Who will be next? Mugabe?"
The protestors were met by some Fiji First supporters who told them they were not wanted here.
Sebastian Joseph left Fiji in 2003 because of the racism he experienced as an Indian in Fiji.
He said Mr Bainimarama has created a Fiji that is fair for both native Fijians and Fijian Indians.
"[The festival] is going to be really good. I've got a lot of respect for [Bainimarama]."
"He gave us fairness and the ability to call ourselves Fijians.
"I was staying in Fiji without an identity before he stepped in."
Mr Joseph said the presence of the protestors wouldn't ruin the positive atmosphere at the festival.
He said everyone at the event believed the elections would be fair and Mr Bainimarama would be elected prime minister "by a landslide".

Whilst all can respect customs it's not perhaps the best way for a possible government leader to act.

All it will do is suggest that if she were to get voted in as leader she would act in exactly the same way.

It's a political leaders post not a post for a queen and her 'subjects'.

Fiji needs leaders who can lead from the front.

Quarters for teachers
Salaseini Moceiwai
Saturday, August 09, 2014
A $53,000 teacher's quarters has been opened at Ahmadhiyya Secondary School in Macuata.

Opening the quarters was permanent secretary for PSC Parmesh Chand in front of hundreds of students, parents, well-wishers and teachers on Thursday.

Mr Chand said the initiative was one that would improve the environment of the school.

"The community-operated school requested the government's intervention in the form of a teacher's quarters," Mr Chand said.

"Now that it has been completed, we are pleased that the quarters will enhance the living conditions of teachers.

"It allows better living environment for teachers and will definitely have a positive impact on the education of the students."

Meanwhile, when asked about the performance of the civil service in the North, Mr Chand said it had improved.

Around a thousand people greeted Fiji’s military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama in Auckland today, but his rally was peppered with barracking and jeers at times.

Bainimarama, who overthrew a democratic government in 2006, is in New Zealand on a tourist visa to campaign ahead of elections on September 17.

Speaking to the predominantly Indo-Fijian audience, he stressed that under his military dictatorship he had instituted a rule that was not based on race.

Unlike previous elections, voters will not be categorised by race. Instead, everybody’s vote would be equal, he said.

Around 56 per cent of the 838,000 people of Fiji are indigenous and 37 per cent Indian, descendants of indentured labourers imported by the colonial British.

Around 20 protesters marched to the Manukau Event Centre and while security kept them out of the grounds, a number of loud critics called out abuse during the meeting.

“I have been told not to worry about the devils,” Bainimarama told the audience.

He arrived in New Zealand yesterday evening and was protected from the media by the Department of Internal Affairs at the airport.

At today’s event he arrived in a limousine and was driven straight to the event with Fijian security keeping media away.

During a question time session the MC ordered that no media be allowed to ask questions.

Several journalists covering the event have been banned from Fiji by Bainimarama.

He will later today host a dinner at the Northern Club in Auckland attended by Fiji investors and supporters of his political party, Fiji First.

Tomorrow he will host a talkback session on Indian Radio Tarana and attend a church service.

He has no meetings with New Zealand officials.

So why did Bainimarama run away from NZ Media and attempted to lock out opponents?

It seems he cant defend his record of serial lies and deception given his limitations and without Khaiyum on his side - a dash was made yesterday. (see NZ media stories regarding his Serevi goose- step like dash from NZ media)!

Record of lies - running from truth Bai

1.Why did you say back in 2007 that you will be paid salary of the Army Commander ($98,000) and when did you decide to increase your salary to $278,000 as declared recently?

2.Why did you say back in 2006 December that no Army officer/member will benefit from the coup when in fact several RFMF personnel are serving in your cabinet, or in diplomatic missions, or as permanent secretaries and in other senior civil service roles as well as in government controlled boards?

3.Why did you say back in 2007 that no person can be appointed to serve on more than one board controlled by the government but that has not been the practice in the past 8 years?

4.Why did you say that there will be no nepotism or cronyism in government appointments when we can see several of your family members holding high profile Jobs in government or in its agencies?

5.Why did you say your government would be transparent and accountable when your have actually banned public or political party access to the Auditor General’s reports from 2007 – 2013 and have recently dissolved the Public Accounts Committee?

6.Why did your say that you will ensure civil service and security force membership reflect the multiracial composition of Fiji when in fact the RFMF under your leadership from 1999 till 2014 March always had 99% Fijians in it?

7.Why did you say in 2007 and subsequently stated in the Peoples Charter (which you claim was approved by 75% of the people) that you will uphold the 1997 Constitution when in fact you did the opposite once your regime was found by the Appeals Court to be unlawful?

8.Why did you secure international funding for the Yash Ghai Commission stating that you will respect the Ghai Commission Draft and refer the same to a representative Constituent Assembly (CA) only to trash the Ghai Draft and scrapped the CA process?

9.Why did you say that no member of the Interim cabinet will contest the 2009 Elections and now we hear most of them in his FijiFirst line up for the elections?

10.Why did you complain about the 2006 debt level which was $2.6 Billion and state that you would reduce National Debt when in fact the debt has now swelled to $5 billion?

Anonymous said...

Did Bainimarma say that Indians worship Tavoro?

Remember i taukei are majority and people like you and other critics of i taukei must learn to respect i taukei.

The only way peace will prevail in the country is when these two thugs are removed. These two have country and it's people at ransom.

Frank Bainimarama is not a respectable person. He killed off Fijian democracy and replaced it with a nasty military dictatorship. The fact that he has now resigned his commission and is fighting a democratic election changes none of this. He will be forever remembered as one of the democratic villains of the Pacific.

Ideally Bainimarama would by now have been sentenced to a long time in jail, like the last man who launched a coup in his country, George Speight. Overthrowing a democratic system is a form of treason and it is not something that should be lightly forgiven.

But Bainimarama has given himself immunity for treason through a convenient constitution that his “government” put through. This is a farce and has exactly the moral force of a criminal pardoning himself for his crime. Bainimarama, in short, hardly deserves to be enjoying the freedoms that he denied to other Fijians during the long years of his dictatorship.

The New Zealand government, naturally, does not accept this line of thought. It practises McCullyism in foreign affairs, which is an extreme form of pragmatism. It is happy to forget Bainimarama’s crimes. New Zealand has decided the time has come to forgive him and try to “encourage” his re-entry into the world of democracy, the world that he destroyed. Bainimarama’s Australian friends, of course, have been similarly understanding; he will cross the Tasman after finishing his brief stint here. But that does not mean he should be treated just like any other candidate in the election which he so long delayed.

Bainimarama should understand that New Zealand democrats detest him and everything he represents. Since the Key Government has decided to let him come here, New Zealand democrats should use the other choice open to them. They can go and protest vigorously – but always peacefully – at Bainimarama’s election meetings in Auckland. They should tell the man what they think of him. They should use the freedom we enjoy here to condemn the man who took away democratic freedom in Fiji. Bainimarama, it seems, will never have to pay properly for what he did. But he shouldn’t think that he has got away scot-free.

Unfortunately, it’s entirely possible that Bainimarama will do well in the Fijian election. The man who should be drummed out of any election might end up winning this one. And this shows the long-term damage that Fiji’s coup culture has done to the nation.

Democracy has not taken a deep hold in this splintered society.

If it had, the first coup, by Sitiveni Rabuka, would never have been repeated. The aggressive and arrogant military of Fiji has become a long-term curse on the nation. The soldiers have been sent back to their barracks this time, but they all know that coups are not only possible in Fiji, they are highly do-able.

The result is that the culture of the coup will continue to cast its shadow over Fijian politics for a long time to come. Even if the rebel Bainimarama decides to behave like a democrat, what other tin-pot dictator is nursing dreams of power in a Fijian barracks?

The demon is out of the bottle, and it will be immensely hard to put back.

To those 20 nationalists who held executive posts in SVT/SDL government at the Auckland meeting inspite of living in NZ you don't know the meaning of multiracialism. You haven't learnt any thing while living in NZ. There was no democracy in Fiji from 1987 to 2005 Dec. The indo-Fijians were suppressed/beaten/vandalised/killed in their own country.
The Africans in USA know USA as their motherland. Likewise Europeans in NZ only regard NZ has their mother country. Everyone is called Kiwis in NZ. My children are born in NZ are called Kiwis. There is no discrimination between a Maori child, an European child and an Indian child born in NZ. Everyone has equal citizenship. Although our ancestors came from India ABOUT 100 years ago but we are born and bred in Fiji. Victor Lal is also born and Fiji belongs to him. If you guys hate Fiji Indians that means you people hate Victor Lal.
Has Rajesh become insane? Can he explain why cant he preach Christianity in NZ. How has PM affected his practising OF Christianity. It was Rabuka who did this to the Fiji Indians in 1987-1990.
Race and Religion shouldn't be used to politicise things as Qarase is doing. The whole world is becoming globalised and one. In our Fiji we need understanding and education to better the lives of everyone. There are two parties presently who can do it, NFP and FF.
Vote Bainimarama.

Fiji Government Distances Itself From Editorial About Forum SG
Fiji Sun claims PNG betrayed Fiji by not supporting candidate

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, August 8, 2014) – Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday shied away from the glare of the media in regards to the diplomatic spat between Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The Post-Courier called Prime Minister Bainimarama for direct comments over the Fiji Sun’s editorial on the selection of Dame Meg Taylor to the Pacific Island Forum top post – the Secretary General. But Fiji’s PM, who was boarding his Fiji plane to New Zealand just before lunch yesterday, quickly diverted the calls to his top military and political advisers, Major Penioni Naliva and Major Aseri Rokoura, for their comments. The Post-Courier then tried speaking to them but both advisers also shied away from giving too much to this newspaper about the issue that got created by the Fiji Sun as they were also preparing to get on the plane to accompany Mr Bainimarama, who is now in New Zealand. Instead, they referred the Post-Courier to the Prime Minister’s office for comment. Mr Bainimarama’s office told the Post-Courier that the Fiji Sun’s editorial was not necessarily the Fiji Government’s stand on Papua New Guinea and the reports of accusations of reneging the leaders to vote for PNG’s candidate and waving K500 million to fund smaller nations. "Prime Minister Bainimarama is on his way to New Zealand but briefly says that it’s not his Government’s view and will not give their stand in the media," they told the Post-Courier.

FijiFirst leader and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama scored a major victory in Auckland yesterday.
Two thousand people packed the Vodafone Manukau Event Centre, Manukau City, and spilled outside to hear him correct misconceptions about the Constitution, land, equal citizenry and secular state.
Only 30 people led by former Qarase government minister Rajesh Singh and helped by the Mana Party in New Zealand protested outside with placards. Mr Bainimarama was overwhelmed with the support and described the protesters as a “bunch of losers”.
Other political parties that went to NZ before failed to attract similar crowds. Speaking from Auckland yesterday, Mr Bainimarama said he was informed the protest was led by former director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Josaia Rasiga.
He said Mr Rasiga was about to be arrested when he sought refuge in New Zealand.

Kamlesh Kumar people like you who have moved away from Fiji stop your comments.Your comments will only have adverse impact on mostly poor and innocent Indians here. Bainimarma had no choice as he was to be removed by the SDL. Remember it was Bainimarma who was behind the 2000 coup.
Bianimarma is a serial liar and most corrupted person. He family has benefited from the coup immensely.
The crime rate has gone up by 100% in the country most of which are not reported in the media.
People have no freedom of speech in the country.
The best for the country is SODELPA forms coalition with other parties so their is peace and stability.
Bianimarma and Khayium has looted the country finance for 8 years.

Mrs Gardner - thanks for reminding me what my surname is . The more hate against Indians , fellow Fijian fiji first supporters , rotumans , vulagis etc the more people realise that these are all supporters of SODELpa and qarase , and trust me , qarase reads this blog , and if he was a fair and nice person without any prejudices he would denounce the hate statements , the statements of allusion to violence against Indians and fiji first supporters . No hate nor violence should be tolerated . If all these allegations against frank and Aiyaz were true, after reading all the hatred here ... I'd still support them . I'd rather vote for the devil I know .... I guess you know the next .

The reality is that if Frank and his party get voted in it's because it's what the people want.

It would also support the reality of the fact that he has remained at the top for the past 8 years because it's what the vast majority have have been happier with.

Those that disagree will of course start talking guns, intimidation and restrictions etc but lets be honest and look at who, the individuals themselves and what percentage of the population have been personally affected by this negative side.

Let me remind you - the more your attack fiji Muslims , the stronger we become . As a Fijian muslim. , I hold no grudges against anyone . That's not what my religion preaches , Fijian Muslims are some of the most peaceful in the world - no extremist views , NOT a single Fijian muslim has ever been convicted of any terrorist activity !!!, nor has a Fijian muslim ever associated with extremist groups that is malign our religion . The fact is we are as Fijian as you all because we we're born in this beautiful place . It's sad to see the accusations that come through , I'm hoping that Fijian elders with common sense will come forward to stop this before it's too late . If violence will erupt in Fiji , I'm afraid , the country will be have a multi faceted collapse , and the it may never recover . The events of 1987 changed us , let the events of tomorrow change us for a better Fiji not a bitter Fiji .

Indigenous Fijians and Fiji First

Any indigenous Fijian voting for Fiji First is like a Jew voting for Hitler.

Bainimarama has and continues to do immeasurable damage to indigenous Fijians, with respect to their tradition, culture and resources. Hitler did the same with the Jews.

The only difference was that Hitler was not a Jew targeting Jews whereas Bainimarama is a Fijian who is decimating Fijian culture tradition and resources for his own benefit and survival. He is a traitor to his race and to Fiji.

Reject the treasonous Bainimarama, the thieving Khaiyum and the FFP!

Repeka Nasiko
Sunday, August 10, 2014

A SMALL number of people turned up at a FijiFirst party meeting at the Nasereci Methodist Hall in Namaka, Nadi, on Thursday night, the majority making a direct plea to Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainimarama for assistance in personal hardships they faced.

These included sugarcane farmers, sacked workers, concerned parents and landowners. An unemployed parent whose children attend Shri A.D Patel Memorial Primary School informed the PM he was still paying for his children’s bus fare.

The father of three said efforts to get assistance from the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities were futile since the scheme was introduced last year.

Another speaker, a sugarcane farmer, said he was receiving little assistance from the police and the military for the protection of his farm despite making numerous calls. He said lately his sugarcane farm had been destroyed by disgruntled individuals while farm animals were stolen.

“I’ve been writing to a lot of people but nobody seems to want to help me out,” he said.

“Half of my crop has been eaten by cows, my fence has been cut.

“I’ve seen the police and the military but nobody seems to be bothered about this.”

Another woman wanted to know if there was a provision in the Crimes Decree that protected individuals whose properties were damaged in a criminal act.

The Nadi resident said part of her home was damaged by a reckless driver and it cost the family $8500 in repair.

In response to these and the many other grievances raised, Mr Bainimarama asked the party’s support staff to record the details of the complaints.

Kamlesh Kumar see above how Indo Fijians are suffering under Bainimarma rule.
Why police and military not helping this Indo Fijian farmer?
Why another Indo Fijian not helped with bus fare?
Come to Fiji then you will the reality on ground the suffering of the poor Indo Fijan.
Nothing gets reported in media as it controlled by the regime.
So shut your mouth as comments from people like you are not helping the Indo Fijans.
Indo Fijians need to understand to stay together with the i taukei for long term stability and peace.

Biainiamra and Khayium have ruled illegally for 8 years.
Even in N.Z. or Aust democratically elected prime ministers and government do not rule for 8 years.

The way forward in this difficult time is form SODELPA to form government with other parties for long term stability and peace.

Bainimarma and Khayium have already done lot of damage to race relations in our beautiful country.

Khayium has created an environment of hate amongst the i taukei. The best solution for race relations is SODELPA and other politcal parties getting together to form the next legal government.
FF has ruled for 8 years. Too long in power means corruption and nepotism.
Time for change.

Vutaki Meo said...

How can SODELPA win? The party is divided and factitious. Qarase has complicated the matter worse by using race-based politics. Ro Kepa looks like has accepted defeat and is no longer campaigning in the mean time some SODELPA candidates have given up on the party and are quitting the party for good. Four new candidates have been announced. Vocea is the new media spokesperson while a faction want to bring back Rabuka as the leader of SODELPA. How can SODELPA provide stability and good governance when it is a patch up party just for the election. While SODELPA is going down the hill PM is attracting voters like magnet. People come to see him in droves. The racist SODELPA party is history.

Interesting point you make about nil terrorist activities. So what was the name of the hijacker who attempted to hijack an Air NZ Boeing at Nadi airport in 1987 but was thwarted when a quick-thinking crew thumped him from behind with a bottle of duty free whiskey?

Also, didn't your illegal AG of Fiji dabble with cocktail molotovs around the time as well and only fled to Australia when he was being sought for questioning?

To the regime trolls active here. We know you value your bread and butter and extra money from this dictator. We also know that the people's vote does not matter. It is the result or the outcome that really matters.

We also know that your lost shepherd, Vorqeqe and Khaiyum have already determined the outcome of this election. The people will vot, but you already determined the results. Voreqe want to "win" the election so that he will win legitimacy and respectability.

But I ask you regime trolls, have you ever asked yourselves the question: When Voreqe and Khaiyum win the election through fraud and deceit, what will the people do? I think its time you people think very seriously about what you are doing. It is quite possible that Fiji will be engulfed in a flame of protests and rebellion which not even the army and the police can handle, because both institutions are not united for Voreqe. Please do the right thing. If you are real soldiers, be a person of courage for once and do the right thing. Stand up for the right. Protect the people whom you have sworn to serve. Vinaka

You sir are an ass.

You complain about the present government, how they came to power and what they have done.

You sir, then suggest that if YOU do not get your own way and this government remains in power after elections there could be rebellion.

YOU have had 8 years to rebel and the greatest effort you have put into that is blogging.

YOU, are an ass.

Yes, vote for Fiji First and we may let you go. With Allah's grace, Fiji First will come into power and then we will start the process of "Islamization" of Fiji. Syria is already readying a military ship which will be well positioned in Fiji Waters by Sept 17. The Syrian military will occupy Fiji if the Sept 17 results don't go our way. Remember this and be warned! Allah Hu Akbar!

@Anonymous 8:27 PM

Perhaps. But you, sir, are both an ass and a traitor.

You support a gang of thugs who overthrew our multicultural and democratically elected government through force and treason. It took away our press, our judiciary, and our rights, plundered out treasury, and attempted the systematic destruction of our cultural institutions, whilst feeding us its lies and imposing its own self-serving "constitution".

We have had eight years to rebel but foolishly gave this regime every benefit of the doubt in our desire to avoid conflict.

You sir, then imply that even after exhausting all peaceful avenues for protest, we are wrong to suggest that the people of Fiji—people of all ages, races, and religion—should finally see this regime for the tyranny it is and stand up in defence of our beloved country.

You seize our government and hold it by force but suggest that we have no right to deploy force in its defence.

YOU are an ass.

Thank you Anon 1:24. My fellow citizens of Fiji. This election is nothing less than the final touchdown in the most evil game of deceit, treachery and criminal actions ever perpetrated against the people of Fiji by a few cunning men and women. It is the final nail in the national coffin which will bury the rights and freedoms which distinguishes us as free men and women.

This election is really the final act to the most elaborate drama of blatant criminal sabotage of our nation. Do you ever wonder why the ballot papers will only have numbers with no faces? These thugs don’t care about us. They only care about themselves and no one else. Their sole reason is to get the numbers to get to parliament. And when they do, they will be sworn in as the undisputable rulers of Fiji for as long as they want, according to their rules.

But the real question is what are we going to do about it? When Voreqe, Kahiyum and their group win this election, what then? It will be too late to complain. Too late to protest. Too late to call for a recount. Too late to recommend a caretaker Government. Too late to petition the useless idiot at Government House. Too late for peaceful action. Too late to reason with these ruthless scoundrels.

The only way out of our reality after they have declared election victory would be a physical confrontation to oust them from power. I sure hope the other parties and leaders have carefully analysed the situation and have accounted for every contingency. Is the post - election confrontation part of the pre-election strategy ? I sure hope it is.

Anonymous said...

Sad, but true. Nothing left but to physically confront the dictatorship. I don't care if we replace Bainimarama with a penitent Rabuka, in a caretaker capacity only. But we've clearly exhausted all legal remedies. Time for struggle. Time for Ratu Sukuna Park. It's what Ratu Sukuna would have expected of us at this point.

Bainimarama as a civilian is now copping the barage of abuse from his opponents. It is hilarious that he is using the words "losers" and "devils" in retaliation. His mouth must be jam packed with F#$*& Y%$ and M@g&%t*&amudou.lol! His own journey to be elected as leader is now restricting his own freedom of speech
Good to see him without the gun that helped him into office. Now we are witnessing the silly Indians and a minute cohort of itaukeis supporting the very process (military coups) that has brought Fiji's so much heartache. What bemuses me is that no one has ever learnt that coups will not solve Fijis problem. 8 years of military rule and the races are as polarised as ever.

Tamai Tui Viti 1 said...

Since we are in the heat of the election period, it would probably be worthwhile looking back at our leadership:
Ratu Kamisese Mara 1967 - 1992
Timoci Bavara 1987
Sitiveni Rabuka 1992-1999
Mahendra Pal Chaudary 1999-2000
Laisenia Qarase 2000-2006
Frank Bainimarama 2006 - till now

Two Military officers suddenly appear from nowhere to become our leader. Both created havoc to the economy and the lives of sections of the economy.
The acid test is, are we prepared to accept Bainimarama's rhetoric that his military coup will end all military coups.
What he is actually saying is that his troops are so weak and easily enticed that he is on a mission to get rid of elements that influence his men.
So in fact he is placing the blame squarely on civilians. So do you believe that Fiji will be a better
place with him at the helm? Are you going to cement his hold on power with your vote?
He has already enticed you with developments from staggering debts. Why do you think economic growth have been very poor ?- because we have a thug at the helm.
Do you think we would have had been in the same position if he wasn't there?
He calls everyone who oppose him devils and losers, do you think he is prepared to accept opposing views?

Army says...a large number of police officers who served with the CID, Special Branch, Crime Intelligence and other sectors of the Fiji Police Force have documents relating to the corruptive actions of Frank Bainimarama. The once head of the FIRCA Investigation Division who fled to Australia and a number of other Government employees have documents to prove Frank the COMMON CRIMINAL's and his side kick AIYAZ CRIMINAL activities whilst in Government. It is sad that numerous people particularly the kailoma's of Fiji and the Indians do not realise the impact of Franks actions to the nation. True SODELPA is rearing its ugly head with its land, race and religious based politics but we need to realise the truth of what has transpired and decide what is the best for Fiji and not let a dictator set these terms for us. Of course there are differences between the races but this is political and does not truly reflect the way people have assimilated. We cannot allow a PM who in a public interview uses words like Bullshit and is self centred with a capital 'I'. Justice must prevail and the truth must be realised that Frank is a COMMON CRIMINAL and committed an act of treason and Fiji does not need dictators or criminals running the country otherwise we are no difference to George Speight Rabuka or any dictator who has led their country to a path of economic destruction.

Fiji First are using their so-called peoples Constitution as their tool to allure people and defend themselves for their actions.
All lawyers in Fiji from Gates down (which is the problem we have too many lawyers)all know that the process to abrogate the 1997 constitution was not completed when Bhai took over in 2006(please refer to 1997 Consttitution and processes to change or abrogate it) therefore it remains suspended but not abrogated ..making it still the only legal constituition in Fiji to date that was made by the people for the people through parliamentary process..making Bhai/Khaiyums constitution null and void.
Only two people in Fiji are constitutional experts and they can shed more light on this Jon Apted and Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi.

Under current govt :
- individual tax rates lowest ever - $16k and under - 0 zero tax . Let me explain that . An individual can earn up to $16k with zero tax payable and no tax returns to lodge . Great great great . Why ? Firstly , the average income in fiji ( arguably is approx around $8k pa ) , secondly people were paying exorbitant fees to bullshit accountants to do tax returns , whereas their tax positions were very simple . Aiyaz and frank have scrapped that , saving time and money . No govt ever bothered doing that .
- lowest corporate tax rates ever . 20 per cent . Damn if you are a business owner , you are laughing !!!!!!
- build a home ( new dwelling ) and VAT is refunded and capped at approximately $15k fir all materials purchased .

- foreigners who have itaukei as business partners ( minimum percentage ) will be given tax concessions . What does that mean ? The govt is simply saying , get Fijian landowners and itaukei involved and we will give you concessions . Can't be bad aye?
