Electoral Commission decision not so brave

Brave Scots: Voted against independence.
Two global elections and one referendum last week but which country had the results officially challenged?

That's right, Fiji.

New Zealand went to the poll on Saturday and the landslide victory by the National Party was accepted by the Labour Party, as was the 55% vote against independence for Scotland by the Yes camp, albeit with some murmurs about trickery at the last minute.

In Fiji, the results which quickly put Fiji First in front by thousands of votes were rejected by the five political parties on the first day of results being made public.

Regime supporters have tried to claim it was a case of sour grapes but there is no denying irregularities - deliberate or otherwise - made the results unacceptable at face value.

Unlike New Zealand and Scotland where democracy reigns, the election in Fiji was steeped in conflicts of interests, biases and sloppiness.

The concerns listed by the parties would never have been put to paper if there was genuine faith in the way the election was organised and run.

New Zealand, for example, would never have allowed the attorney general aka general secretary of Fiji First to be the Minister overseeing the election, or his cousin the Supervisor of Elections or his wife collating results.

Even the pool of cars used during the election was a conflict of interest, and again would never have been sanctioned as acceptable in a properly-run poll.

And yet the chair of the Fiji Electoral Commission has rejected all 10 concerns raised by the parties, ending his letter with the scathing dismissal: "Your allegation has caused damage to the reputation of the FEO and dampened the spirit of thousands of the dedicated workers,
whose dedication and commitment enabled
this election to take place."

The complaint was never about individual workers but about the leadership behind them.

But as we knew going in, the election was never going to be fair and free, let alone democratic, and even the role Chenn Bunn Young himself and the stance of the Commission has played, has been questionable.

Young should be ashamed of himself for being one-eyed: the parties were entitled to raise concerns and have them heard without him denigrating them.

If we fault the political parties, it would be for their ongoing naivety that complaints would be given the time of day. They should also take ownership for failing to go into a Coalition (NFP was the first to break rank), running poor campaigns (SODELPA and PDP were the worst, NFP the best) but the truth is the regime's propaganda machine was too much competition for them.

The dictatorship can celebrate but the doubts about the suspicions about this election will continue to dog it.

Editor's Note: According to local media 446,010 votes from 1827 polling stations have counted with Fiji First taking 263, 664 suggesting it'll get 32 seats, SODELPA 15, and NFP three.

  1. Well, the stark difference between Fiji and Scotland/NZ is that Fiji is a dictatorship clumsily transitioning to democracy, or rather, to be realistic, the facade of democracy.

I think the Electoral Commission should cool their heels and allow the political parties to make their case, instead of being defensive and unappreciative of the grossly uneven playing field the parties have operated on from the get-go.

  2. You guys still crying over Fijifirst win. Come on - its all over. FF will be there for next 12 years.
As to Beddoes, he is, as always, a cry baby . Poor guy has got no where to go. I hope FIRCA will investigate his bogus tax deductions and all the money he has, like Chaudhary, siphoned overseas. He should be happy he is called a Fijian - under the old constitution he would have been called a half caste !
Beddoes business in the verge of collapse. Please give him credit with caution.

Six return from the 'dead' to vote

    By SHALVEEN CHAND
    Sunday, September 21, 2014

Update: 9:46PM IT has been an interesting general election, after eight years a democratically elected government of the people will take control of things.

An interesting fact about the election is that two days before the polling day, six more people were added to the total of registered voters taking it to 591,101.

The six were thought to be dead as their death certificates were issued for them by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, and letters were sent to their respective families in April advising that their names would be struck off the voter list.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said the mistake was on part of the registrars office and to their surprise the six men declared dead turned up at the FEO wanting to vote.

  5. I WONDER HOW MANY DEAD PEOPLE CAME BACK TO VOTE!

I bet the LIAR Bainimarama will be able to explain that one too.

And Guess what....the Fiji First Party idiots and dickheads and the Pussy soldiers will believe him too.

ALL A BUNCH OF FARKING ZOMBIES!

  6. So the election was rigged? The
    election commission was illegal?
    The supervisor of election was
illegal? The constitution was illegal? The appointment of the
Parliamentary secretary was illegal? The election itself is
also illegal? Why is the whole world via their MOG sending out
    congratulatory messages to the
Fijian voters, that the election was clean and above board?
I,ll call that congratulatory messages as kiss ass and illegal
Thanks God the election took it,s
    course and short ass-Frank was
subdued right to the very end-he
didn't even realized that he was
been played right to the very end?

Is Lautoka’s Pastor Young “Chairman of the Electoral Commission” ordered to respond by someone else outside the Electoral Commission?

Is Pastor Young ‘the Chairman of electoral Commisison” or Chairperson to the Commission?? What is the difference in meaning, if any at all.
Seems he is slowly distancing himself from the Bainimarama/Aiyuz circus..

  14. Most of you guys posting here do not understand how hard it is to rig an election. We don't have the capabilities or the expertise in fiji to rig one. Ro Teimumu should fire her chief of propaganda Mickey fatass Bedose as soon as possible and also distance herself from adulterers like savenaca kamikamica and adi litia qionibaravi and crooks like sainiana radrodro to gain back some credibility.

  21. It is shame that it took over five days to count half million votes in Fiji while in Scotland results were known the night on the day of referendum.
If this is not vote rigging than what????????????
Why so delay, can someone explain.. it whom Bainimarama Khaiyun want to sit in parliament???? if this is true than so call learned man Dr. Biman's career is ruined, this man now can't leave FNP leadership, nor become leader of opposition, nor vice chancellor of USP.... 24. The army has moved back to Barracks. Bainimarama is now the legitimate PM. SODELPA is in opposition. FLP is annihilated..What more is there to say! The people have spoken, they are now waiting for their goodies!
The country now has moved into a new realm of legitimising lawlessness. This is not to judge the will of the people, but the bigger picture says it all - Steal and give to those that want or need it..Robin Hood style! This was a label put on MPC..but in fact it is the trait of our elected PM

  25. Just finish a marathon of kava drinking...ok who won the election?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lets look positively at this, democracy has triumphed. This was won fair and square by the dictator. The big question is why did the people legitimise his rule..it is because the opposition made that happen -Fijians a sick and tired of racial politicking. They'd rather have someone who reviles racial discrimination even if he is
dictatorial. That is a lesson to be learnt by other parties. Traces of racial vilification might rear its ugly head from time to time, but it is not needed in the governing of a country! Government is for all, not a selected few!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Now that it's "won" the elections (yeah, I don't buy it either), the regime has run out of excuses.

It has no reason to block the Methodists from gathering for their AGM.

It shouldn't be so frightened that it needs to call off human rights marches.

Bainimarama and Khaiyum shouldn't need so many bodyguards.

The regime shouldn't need to resort again to Public Emergency Regulations.

It shouldn no longer arrest and harass human rights activists.

It shouldn't torture political opponents or firebomb their homes and offices.

The regime shouldn't interfere with the work of the judiciary.

It should stop packing the courts with handpicked mercenaries from Sri Lanka.

The regime should reopen Parliament and never close it again.

It shouldn't need to post censors in every newsroom and cyber-cafe.

It shouldn't use its control of the courts to disqualify its main political opponents from competing in the next elections.

    It shouldn't fear the GCC.

It should allow a popular referendum on its phony constitution.

It shouldn't delist rival political parties.

The Fiji Sun should no longer need to distort all news pertaining to the regime and decline to publish any dissenting views.

The regime should no longer need to use so many underhanded tactics in order to manage the next elections.

In fact, Khaiyum shouldn't need to be in charge of elections again, and the regime shouldn't be afraid to yield power to a caretaker government next time.

The regime shouldn't need to hire an American PR firm, spending millions of our taxpayer dollars.

The regime shouldn't need to use IT specialists from India to fix another election.

FFP should welcome and want to participate in public debates.

The regime shouldn't need to hire the Clarendon House bloggers in order to hijack opposition websites.

It shouldn't need to hire bloggers in order to inflate the perception of its popularity.

It shouldn't need to hire bloggers to spread their lies on the web.

It shouldn't feel the need to hire bloggers to post anonymous hate-filled comments.

It shouldn't feel the need to falsely attribute many such remarks to oppositionists, in order to discredit them.

It shouldn't feel the need to rebut this comment with the usual errant nonsense, but instead by reasoned argument.

Rabuka did this with the support of the Taukei and Now Bhai has done this with the support of the 20% Taukei supporters and mostly low income earner (not civil servants) who are ignorant of land issues and the importance of traditional culture and identity and managed to get the support of the Indo Fijian supporters FLP strong holds.

It is clear that the 14 province in Fiji do not support this Regime and we all now that it will not be a smooth sailing for Bhai and Khai.

The good thing is that we have moved a step towards democracy and hopefully the elected candidates will we able to deliver their promises.

I took my hat off to the 5 political parties who were able to get a significant number of votes and the writing is on the wall for Bhai and Khai that the Kai Viti will NEVER support this murderous regime.

  31. The Election over and the results achieved was pre planned by Frank Advisers. Khaiyum is the man who is behind the law to support PM campaign. The Finance boss is Frank himself, so nobody in Fiji has the right to question his decision or to audit his abuse of power. Well Done Frank, your strategy to kick out Fiji's brilliant Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry worked to your favour. Thank you for calming down the power of FRCA Auditors by hiring the private firm of Nur Bano who also hired the service of a sacked Director General of IRD/FRCA, Abdul Hakim to support the Muslim Think Tank who kicked out all racial politicians in Fiji since independence. However, let me remind you Mr PM, you should guard your team well from your enemies spies in and outside Fiji. Mahendra Chaundry will do his best to expose your corruption and abuse of office for not giving him any chance to contest the election, despite of the fact he paid your outstanding leave for many years.
I wish you the best in your term in Parliament, and looking forward to see your government use all the taxes collected by FRCA to fulfill your promise to the itaukei in exchange of their unused land into your Land Bank.

But the point that needs to be remembered is that "WHAT EVER YOU SOW YOU WILL ALSO REAP".

The reaping will begin soon especially in the area of Financing the government and it is the working people NOT so much from the low income earners and the Biog business people and Hoteliers but the civil servants and middle income earners and most of these people voted for SODELPA, NFP and DPD and FLP and OFP.

Khaihum knows how to punish people through smart policies.

And at one time the voter numbers coming in to vote was projected to be more than 640,000.

Let's get to the bottom of this. This is not sour grapes, but just plain trying to find out the truth. The election Chairman Bunn Young says, "Where are the proofs?" But he was always biased from the start.

    Let's do a thorough investigation.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm not scaremongering at all. I'm just pointing out the regime's conduct to date and suggesting that if (IF) it really did win the election, and by a comfortable margin, then it should stop running from the Fijian people.

I'm not scaremongering, and I'm not surprised by the win. Like Just Situational Logic, I expected the regime to win by stealing the election, and I believe it did just that.

I AM angry, though. Not so much at the supporters of Fiji First, since they acted just as I expected of liars, dupes and traitors. The main reason I'm angry is because I'm disappointed that the opposition party leaders all proved to be soooo incredibly stupid and naive.

Why did they allow Bainimarama control over the election process? Why didn't they unite as I and so many others urged? Why didn't they adopt a broad, non-racial and appealing platform like Dakuwaqa's Ten-Point Programme?

Why didn't they demand a fair election process and, failing to get it, simply boycott the elections? How could they possibly accept an election organised by Sayed-Khaiyum? How could they accept his kid cousin as the Supervisor of Elections?

What else other than one-sided decrees did they expect from the regime? What else but lies did they expect from Fiji's controlled media? What else other than rejection did they expect for all of their electoral complaints? What else other than a blind eye did they expect from the international community?

Don't they recognise by now how cynical this regime is?! Did the People's Charter process, the Leaders of Political Parties Process, the "Abrogation", the Yash Ghai "constitutional dialogue", and the 2013 "constitution" not teach them ANYTHING?

Now they're lodging complaints with the Election Commission? How far do they suppose THAT will take them?

They've royally let down the country, and it began the day they accepted the unacceptable. We even had the Appeal Court ruling in our favour, but what did they do? Instead of standing on the rock solid foundation of the 1997 Constitution and the rule of law, they accepted a rigged process and a phony constitution dictated to them by a gang of criminals and traitors!

They never needed to play by Bainimarama's rules. If only they had united and insisted on the rule of law — not Gate's "law" but the Constitution. And failing to get it, they should have stood united against the dictatorship.

What we saw instead was a failure of leadership, and it was a failure of gigantic proportions. They slipped back into familiar patterns of narrow-minded partisan politics, and they showed too much deference to the thug who robbed us of our government. They dared not anger the dictator. They never stood up. Instead, they meekly accepted the process thrust upon them.

This wasn't leadership. This was patty-cake.

Where were the demonstrations? Where were the rallies? Why didn't the opposition leaders organise their own debate, as Emil King suggested?

Had they but stood, and stood together, we should have stood with them and belled the cat. Instead, it's now each mouse to his own rathole, for the pussycats continue to rule.

Have faith! God sees all things.

Verses 8, 9. - My thoughts are not your thoughts. Though man is made in God's image (Genesis 1:27), yet the nature of God in every way infinitely transcends that of man. Both the thoughts and the acts of God surpass man's understanding. Men find it hard to pardon those who have offended them; God can pardon, and "pardon abundantly." Men cannot conceive of coming changes, when they pass certain limits. God knows assuredly what changes are approaching, since they are his doing.

  70. Congratulations Biman, well done.

Update: 4:25PM THE National Federation Party held a press conference over an hour ago revealing its plan when joining the opposition party in Parliament.

Party leader Professor Biman Prasad said winning three seats was a breakthrough for a party that was written off by many people.

He said the three representatives who won seats in parliament will work with all members of parliament, including the government of the day, in ensuring the parliament becomes an effective debating chamber.

While the result is not what we expected, we are still happy that team NFPs 49 candidates have secured three seats, Mr Prasad said.

The losers, rightly or wrongly, will be the Indian population in Fiji because they will get the blame for the coup.
Where most will lose everything, only a handful will benefit as Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum plunder the Treasury and purchase Properties and Businesses overseas. Something they have already begun.
Divide and conquer is their strategy and with the help and support of an ineffective, corrupt and incompetent RFMF, it will be easily achieved.
Now to continue dismantling the Indigenous Fijian Institutions and invite China and India to the table!

Of course the tool of "divide and rule" is a strategy of every military dictatorship around the world.

We all know that, we all knew that, and yet, played right into it and got played for fools.

For instance, your treasured phony article you picked from the F/Times chatroom as it were back then, and kept waving it around like mad in front restrained, raging, egotistic, i-taukei bulls. Remember?

Now, how could one ever hope for a "unity" so desperately needed the last 8 years to overcome an oppressive regime with silly tactics like that?

The hoped-for unity would have to be initiated by the i-taukei if it was to be effective in overcoming an oppressive dictatorship.

But the likes of you nice guys drove a wedge into "race" then "gender", then "faith"... and I thought, hmmm... you've just crossed a line.

Oh don't worry, I'm not cross since I've come to terms with the FACT that Fiji has a long way to go to getting "back our democracy." that respects the Rule of Law and not the Rule of the Gun.

As the saying goes: "you don't know a good thing until its gone, gone, gone..."

That said, one cannot force the pace (in unifying a divided people) - for reaching out to hearts & minds has to be genuine. This is the 21st century and you can no longer fake it.

It's akin probably to the state of "being in love" for instance - imagining that being translated into a myriad of sparkling little lights around the thoughtful receiver whose mulling away quietly in the dark, unafraid, and yet feels so compelled by these twinkling, shiny little things.

Remember though, it has to be genuine, since there are people around like yours truly with long, sensitive antennas that can detect bullsh!t from a mile off! :-)

So at the risk of being told not to teach a mother hen how to suck eggs - let me just say that one has to dig deep and do what naturally flows from that - in terms of putting yourself right with others, particularly those that you've wronged. Ousted leaders MPC and LQ in particular, comes to mind. The electorate has spoken.

Some of the people posting here are psychopaths, others just disturbed. It's great that there is somewhere they can go to scream their abuse and pander to their deepest sexual fantasies. Go 4.5!

  136. Congratulations to FF for winning the elections!

At least a step in the right direction even though questions are still being asked about the conduct of the elction eg. A Sodelpa candidate, Vani Seruvakula was placed on 4th place during the provisional counts with 6000 plus votes however, when the final elections results came she only polled 1000 plus. What happened there???????

The next step now is to steer Fiji back to normalcy by removing all suppressive laws that had hindered our progress for the last 8 years eg. bring back media freedom, remove all laws that abolished workers rights in Fiji and most of all OPEN UP THE AUDITOR GENERAL'S REPORTS for the last 8 years and take people who failed to follow the rules to task. We might find half of FF parlimentarians back in Naboro!

    Anyway, a good start!

  138. Judging from the amount of swearing it is obvious that the people do not accept the outcome of the election. There are too many questions to be answered and Baimagaitinamu will do all he can to suppress those questions.

    Baimagaitinamu you filthy dog.

  139. Coup 4.5 has survived through the years of the Bainimarama dictatorship...Bainimarama is still around and his rule had just been legitimised by the majority of voters. So those of you who are calling for this site to be pulled down - think again. 4 years is peanuts to the 8 years. Live on C4.5!

It will be on a very low lying island that with climate change will in about 10 years time be under water .. Like the careers of the above mentioned rats

Bai and I wish to thank all the sheeple, especially the so-called 'leaders' of the opposition parties, for helping us (illegitimate thugs) legitimize ourselves by agreeing to ***our*** TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ELECTION.

Thank you for not raising any objections to the election procedure, and for thinking foolishly that we'd willingly give up all our power.

  147. How wonderful to know that the Opposition Party NFP/Sodelpa have agreed that Ro Temumu carry on the leadership role for the Opposition Party in Parliament.

God is with you Ro Temumu and you are where you rightly belong to represent uphold and instill the path of truth justice and godly values and all that is noble and good upon the people of this Nation who stand by you and those who were grossly misled.

Like you, we believe and respect the Rule of Law.

Be comforted in knowing that our prayers and support are with you and the rest of the Opposition Parliamentarians.

God's abundant blessings be with you as Party Leader of SODELPA AND NFP (Professor Biman Prasad) & members combined.

  154. Kaiyums theory put into practise straight away. 3 muslims elected and all three given minsters posts. Soon, the process of muslimization of all these ministries will start. It will be easily done now that Kaiyum is incharge of finance & psc. I-taukei's will soon become servants of their muslim and hindus masters as kaiyum planned.

  156. manning 6.50pm..isn't Australia already the new Chindia? The only reason most of your family is working is because China and India are buying your coal and iron ore. That will change soon as they slow down. The whole manning clan will have to be clinical hypnoquackers. And maybe use some of the coal for heating. I am sure the cheap Big W undies you wear are made in China. Australia, the new Chindia. That will make you a Chindian, manning.

  157. Kepa will and is a very weak leader. She just doesn't possess any leadership skills- no communication skills, no knowledge of laws and no idea if she knows when is day or time.
Baini will run circles around her and she would have no clue.
She can best serve the villagers , the common Itaukies and bludge the land rental money.
