Rebel group behind capture of Fiji troops storms Syrian stronghold

Camp Kigali, the military compound where 10 UN Belgian soldiers were killed.
No word from Al Nusra on the whereabouts or fate of Fiji's captured 45 troops but the rebel group is never far away from the headlines.

It last week courted debate with suggestions it was to form an alliance with the ultra militant group, Islamic State.

It's this week wreaking havoc in Syria's Christian stronghold of Mhardeh, crucial to the rebel advance against the regime.

Residents say the Al Qaeda affiliate has been bombarding the town day and night leaving them with no electricity and with only one road out it has been too dangerous to leave.

It's going into 12 days now since the 45 Fiji peacekeepers were taken hostage after they gave up their weapons to Al Nusra, which last week abandoned negotiations because its demands weren't met.

The Fiji regime is at last sending a delegation to New York and the Golan Heights (unbelievably the three-member team don't even have visas yet) to put pressure on the UN to secure the release of the troops.

The decision is a belated one, prompted by this blog's ongoing revelations about Frank
Bainimarama's incompetence in sending the troops to Golan Heights in the first place and its handling of the capture, a poor priority compared to the election.

Fiji is still way behind the game with RFMF commander Mosese Tikoitoga dismissing reports Al
Nusra have threatened to try the Fiji peacekeepers by Sharia law.

Tikoitoga insists:"There is an agreement in place that if our soldiers are tried they will be tried in a Fiji court and under the Fiji laws."

He has conveniently forgotten the deaths of 10 Belgian soldiers in Rawanda in 1993, after they were ordered by the UN to surrender. The men were tortured and shot by extremist Hutus.

The location of the Fiji soldiers remains unknown but Tikoitoga believes they are within a 50k radius but can't get out because they're being well-guarded.
Messy: Regime's election a shambles.

Another real possibility is that they've been split up into small groups, because it's more manageable to keep them that way than in one large group.

The Filipino Senate has meanwhile passed a resolution praising bravery of its troops for refusing to surrender to Al Nusra and fighting their way out of a standoff.

It comes as sources reveal the Irish UN troops 'almost certainly' would've been killed or taken hostage during the fighting last week if it were not for Israeli soldiers saving them.

Sadly, it seems the international community are taking more interest in the fate of our captured 45 troops than the regime, which has its eye on the election.

Its stale ploys of one-sided media reports are currently focused on painting SODELPA leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, as being 'afraid' to debate Bainimarama.

Yet there is no coverage of the voters who were turned away from pre-polling at Yasawa Community Hall, Taci Community Hall and Malolo district school because there weren’t enough envelopes.

There is also the fake Facebook aimed at undermining Kepa and the slew of filth from trolls at Clarendon House and Fiji Post and Telecom, as well as other acts of intimidation such as threats to arrest Laisenia Qarase - all intended to diminish SODELPA and rattle its voters.

The one story the regime can't manipulate or lie about is the humiliating capture of the 45 troops and Fiji's tarnished reputation as soldiers under this military dictatorship.

The 6ft 6 sergent taught Bainimarama how to do a swift manouver cassava patch goosestep and speedy Gonzales run.

This is another terrible cock-up by the regime. Announcing the hostages are being released whilst delicate negotiations are still ongoing? I hope it doesn't lead to the death of any of the soldiers. It smacks of desperation by the regime to retrieve its poll numbers, in freefall just before the election. It was a rush job to distract us from the revelation that the regime paid the terrorists a bribe to get them to stop demanding his resignation. Frank taking care of Frank whilst the hostages languish under threat of decapitation.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama used to dash through cassava patches at speeds rivalling Usain Bolt. And that was with his boots on and shit dripping down his legs. An amazing mental specimen.

The Israelis let us in on the real deal. They revealed that Bainimarama cut a deal for himself and not the soldiers. That's what Bainimarama gets for burning the Israelis by dealing with the Syrians and Iranians. Now the Israelis have no incentive not to air his dirty laundry.

@ Anon...The country has been held hostage for so long since Rabuka and you are worried about those that are held hostage.Qarase should contact Al Nusra not to release the 45 men unless Bainimarama and Aiarse steps down and give the govern back to the elected Prime Minister. This 45 men are not representing Fiji but themselves. To remind you we pay them to look after us and they took our money and go to work @ The Golan Height's to get more. The truth is everyone in Fiji have been going to work everyday and colapse on the way, hard working people @50yrs are pushed out,did anyone care's about this people? This war is not our war,Muslims have been @war before Christ, who are we to try and get involved?I have families captured and will remember them only as died @ work.

@Nayacakalou

I'm not worried about the 45. If they die that's the risk of the job they have taken. They knew it before they left Fiji and they'll have to accept that fate if it so befalls them.

There's however a bigger issue here about good governance and whether it applies to what has happened here, and if so how it can be improved.

And I cannot see how rioting and street protests is going to advance one iota that need for better systems and good governance

If the chaos of Tarhir square and all that Arab spring business hasn't taught anyone anything, then maybe people calling for insurrection on this Board should look at it and where its now taken those Arab Spring countries.

How could Muslims be at war before Christ, when the Crucifiction was several centuries before the birth of Mohammad?

Anonymous said...

I wonder how much Frank had to borrow from the Chinese in order to get Al Nusra from demanding his resignation. How much will we need to pay ultimately? And why didn't that money go instead towards ransoming our troops?

Anonymous said...

Basically its taken those Arab countries back to the medieval ages. They are now beheading people over there.

well said. the best blog I have seen so far regarding our current political turmoil. some thing different from the usual bitterness seen on these pages. I hate to blunt your hope of a peaceful future for the country but more turmoil lies ahead. What you are talking about takes decades to execute by determined and like minded visionaries or it can but you would need a limitless budget with maybe a 15 year bench mark.
It is not going to happen for the this simple reason: human nature.
Yes I agree that there seems to be a vacuum of real leadership in the country.
The world is changing not for the better before our eyes and Fiji is not quarantined from its effects. whichever party wins must prepare for this.
the petty bickering will be the least of our worries.

Just before election:

"I'm happy to announce that all of our troops are being released unconditionally."

Just AFTER election:

"I'm sorry to announce that the rebels changed their minds and killed all of the hostages."

This blog should win the next golden globe awards if not the Oscars, because there's commentators who shoot off their mouths with very little brain to accompany, like the few last postings:
-MUSLIMS HAVE BEEN AT WAR WITH EACH OTHER BEFORE CHRIST,(islam started in 642 AD)..after Christ's death
-AL NUSRA WANTS VOREQE TO RESIGN(what are you smoking) ...they don't know this idiot from Adam, let alone some market vendor's son called Aiyaz Khaiyum, !!
Then there's the cassava patch dash...how many of you were there to witness this dash?, and if that's not enough ,there was one blogger who said that 2 soldiers were coming back in body bags.....GUYS GUYS, YOU FALLAS WATCH TOO MANY RAMBO MOVIES AYE !!

Try to be informative rather than the usual Marist qauri style of bullshit, like ah ah ah vacava kind of crap.

That is already circulating within the Muslim community, who do have contacts to that region.

If you are not aware there are Fijians also in Pakistan with al Nusra.

Taliban pay for Fijians

Nasik Swami
Saturday, March 09, 2013

FIJIANS recruited by the Taliban are being paid 15,000 rupees ($F491) a month while training in secrecy along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Mansur Khan Mehsud, the director administration and research of the Federal Administered Tribal Areas Research Centre (FATA), a research group on the Taliban in Pakistan, told The Fiji Times that the Taliban admitted it had recruited three Fijians.

Mr Mehsud said the three unidentified men would undergo vigorous training for several months.

"We are still not aware of the date when they were recruited but we know that they are with them (Taliban)," he said from Islamadad on Thursday.

"The names of the three have not been released and will be kept secret.

"It will not even be released to local militants.

"Only the top commanders and leaders will know."

Mr Mehsud said the main reason for the Taliban recruiting Fijians was to spread their hardline Islamic ideology to all corners of the world

Pakistani Taliban sent hundreds to Syria to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with rebels

Published time: July 14, 2013 19:42
RT news

A Pakistani branch of the Taliban has sent hundreds of men to Syria to fight alongside rebels in the battle to topple President Assad. The militant organization has reportedly set up camps, aiming to foster ties with al-Qaeda’s central leadership.

Taliban commanders told Reuters on Sunday that they decided to join the cause in Syria in order to fight alongside their “Mujahedeen friends.”

“When our brothers needed our help, we sent hundreds of fighters along with our Arab friends,” one senior commander said, mentioning that his group would be providing the general public with videos of their “victories” in Syria.

One commander told the agency that the help was sent at the request of “Arab friends.”

“We have established our own camps in Syria. Some of our people go and then return after spending some time fighting there,” a Pakistani Taliban commander said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Since our Arab brothers have come here for our support, we are bound to help them in their respective countries and that is what we did in Syria,” he added.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is known for its affiliation with the al Nusra front, recognized as a branch of al-Qaeda. The majority of Pakistani Taliban groups work under the banner of the TTP.

They operate in Pakistan's insurgency-plagued areas along the Afghan border, seeking to topple Pakistan’s government and install its own branch of Islam.

Taliban factions are motivated to fight by religion in Syria, working under the belief that Sunni Muslims - who are a majority in Syria - are being oppressed by the Shia government.

Muhammed Rafiq one of the main gun runners in the Middle East in 1980's was a Fiji Muslim.

At one point he was in the Top 10 most wanted list of Interpol. For gun running.

So update yourself. A little more humility and less arrogance and maybe you will find out things you thought were only in the Movies

Its called situational awareness.

Try it

Anonymous said...

BTW it was also arrogance which got this 45 into problems.

They were having a party on Wednesday night when their position was being recced by al Nusra and encircled.

Woke up Thursday morning and realised they were encircled when three trucks converged on the Main Gate.

Veibeci gona ya.

Since you're such an expert on Al Nusra, why aren't you with Naivalurua in New York or out in the Middle East negotiating for the return of the hostages?

G HARD said...

negotiate for these people bashers, hahahaha they deserve to be taken hostage to teach them some humility!!!
These soldiers not so long ago were jumping on pregnant women and beating citizens of Fiji,AND its their turn now to get a taste of their own medicine....they deserve every kick in the guts that they get.
They only protect muslims in Fiji ,so its ironical that muslims have them as hostages.

Anonymous said...

Good point. And now we're praying and paying for their release, so that they can come back to give us more of the same mistreatment. Or are we just paying for the terrorists to leave Frank alone before the elections?

Anonymous said...

Who ordered the surrender of our troops? Had to have been Bainimarama.

Anonymous said...

Hard to find any news in Fiji about our 45 soldiers facing trial by Sharia law and probable beheading. It's as though the media is afraid to cover the story because it makes the regime look, well, like what it is.

Just vote for SODELPA and we will reap the deliciously sweet fruits of our choices.
