Regime party takes lead but voting still underway

Coup leader Frank Bainimarama and his party, Fiji First, have taken almost 70 per cent of the vote but the full count isn't expected for a few days.

SODELPA is second with about 26% of the vote. NFP has less than five per cent of the votes with PDP at 3.53% and FLP at just 2.39%.

The figures suggest Fiji First will get 30 of the 50 seats.

Media, both local and international, are reporting euphoria but it's not across the board - sadness and disbelief is coming through.

Ballot boxes at the wharf, what were they doing there?
Questions are also already being asked about why  ballot papers were stored in a container when it was stipulated everything would be kept at SOE offices or with the police?

SODELPA leader Ro Teimumu Kepa casting her vote
Interest has been shown, too, in the number of votes for the illegal attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, who reportedly polled better than NFP leader, Biman Prasad.

Note as well the votes for candidates 297, 397, 277 - did they mistakenly get Bainimarama's votes? They are unknown candidates but are leading their line-up.

Fiji First appears to have got 90 percent IndoFijian votes and 30 to 40 percent of the itaukei votes.

Ro Kepa's votes will be worth looking at. At one point last night she was polling fourth, then second and then third.

Female candidates have meanwhile apparently received 16% (63089 votes) of the total provisional tally of 387400 this morning:

2.6% of votes for Fiji First gone to women (6145 out of 233005)

46.5% of votes for SODELPA gone to women (48056 of 103453)

16.1% of votes for NFP gone to women (3524 of 21910)...

21.1% of PDP votes gone to women (2890 of 13684)

12.2% of FLP votes gone to women (1133 of 9256)

11.7% of OneFiji votes gone to women (509 of 4340)
Roshika Deo has 0.2% of total vote (832)

More to come but one thing is clear: the Opposition parties should've formed a Coalition as we were urged instead of splitting votes.

What people are saying:

If SODELPA becomes the opposition, then let it be the best Opposition Fiji needs for Frank's kind of government. The world will not end tomorrow if Frank wins this. There are other means and processes to verify the results, then there is the next 4 years to think about. There's always 2018 around the corner. So don't lose heart. We are in this for the long haul, not just for now. So still keep the faith.

On the way to vote
Isn't it a sad day for Fiji that we were unable to get a truly honestly democratically elected government.

Again we voted under duress, on vote rigging, false promises, treating and bribery and sympathies.

And this was done knowing full well that they will never be touched or prosecuted because they have provided immunity for themselves.

Candidates were disallowed at the eleventh hour because they were studying overseas for the past year; NGOs were not permitted to do voter education, the media and the public were bombarded with one party's PR, facts were twisted, pre-polling of 60,000 people occurred 6 weeks before election day and before candidates or manifestos were finalised - that's not free and fair and it's not a real choice when people don't have all the facts.

Khaiyum had it all planned out and our poor people were hoodwinked once again.

When are we going to learn our lessons in life and not be taken for granted.

The devil never sleeps. He has reaped his rewards with evil, now those who sold their souls will have to pay the price and that price maybe beyond their expectations.

No surprises there when it comes to Indian voters, more voted for Baimagasona than iTaukei. That in itself tells a lot.

It's all a farce.

Come on 4.5. The only ones crying vote rigging are the same ones that have been crying about everything for the past years.

No one in their right mind is going to 'rig' something to give a result of this horrendous magnitude. It would just be far to obvious and invite far too much notice from the world.

There were no guns at peoples heads yesterday, the people voted for what THEY want.

Please allow me to re-post this early morning bit...

Victory for Bainimarama??? Has Fiji indeed "spoken"?? We do not think so!

Come on! Who are we kidding?..uh...but ourselves!!

BAINIMARAMA WILL NEVER WIN!! In fact, he has just placed himself in a plateau, hence, inadvertently rendering himself vulnerable to domestic and international "democratic scrutiny" without the cover of Aiyuz lordship control over him guaranteed anymore as Aiyuz will be spending the next 2 years or so dodging and polishing what he would wish to look like in 2018.As if voters will forget..

In the domestic front a credible and ever present and vocal opposition watching Bainimarama's every move, and of cause the movement of the monies he now has to surrender the control of the Treasury keys, phew! once and for all!!

Sooooo...did he really win? NO...NO...NO..we all were encouraging him and his mob to take us to the polls, knowing full well the evil intent for them to attempt hog onto executive control of our beautiful islands in the term of their natural miserable lives!!

As we said yesterday the battle towards full restoration of democracy has just taken a strategic turn..

NOW...my tauvu may have to increase his medication and his sheriff Aiyuz borrow some pills from his boy...opps boss.

Now..the real cleaning up begins by tracking all cents spent in the last 7 years..track down lollies sent to off shore account as widely alleged...the naughty bird voluntarily flew in to it's trap...lol...lol...lol!

In short, the 7 year Bainimara/Aiyuz rubbish are a towering pile over Qarase's rubbish that initially prompted the "clean up" response from Delainabua!

Let the game begin!!..and the majority of Indo Fijians have once again shown where their hearts are...oh...we all along thought they were "Fijians"..well, now we are again reminded!!

Majority of these Indo-Fijian must now be carrying their respective holy books with the evil gospel according to Aiyuz evil thesis..

Of course, we prayed for the election; and answers to prayers could be immediate...of in His own wisdom answers our prayers to give US time for real cleaning up in the wilderness....

The result is not surprising. It will now take approximately ten years for the return of democracy.

Foreign investment will not return until the rule of law returns. That can't happen until Gates moves on and some real judicial officers are appointed.

It is unlikely that Frank will engage Australia and New Zealand. That relationship will never be the same.

One thing has been clearly established now: Control the guns control Fiji.

This is the blueprint for future military leaders to legitimise a coup. There are now solid immunity provisions in place to protect any future coup plotters.

Frank was the winner today. Democracy was the big loser. I guess Fiji is not ready for democracy.

Today will be a massive celebration for all Indo-Fijians. Even more so than when MPC was elected in a landslide. Many Itaukei supported MPC. Many iTaukei have supported Frank.

You get what you deserve.

Do you have the guns Frank? For how long?

Register the domain name Coup5. It may be useful sooner rather than later.

My humble opinion is simple. The Sunday talk back on FM96 pushed a lot of people away from SODELPA and inadvertently also away from NFP. Kepa's blatant racism cost them and NFP the race. Labor and PDP were never in the race to begin with. SODELPA needs more than the " Chinese are taking over Fiji" and that the Muslims are somehow taking this country over to make it an Islamic state. They need first and foremost a good leader with half a brain in his or her head and secondly they also need to formulate a complete plan for the country not " we will see when we get their" It also needs to move away from the racial bull that they have spewing. In short major overhaul of the party.Otherwise in 4 years they will have even lesser seats.
All in all the people have spoken for better or for worse.

Fully concur with your opinion.

To be in politics you have to have something to offer the people that they want.

Ro K had nothing but trivial bitching and we all know the results of that from the past and where it led Fiji.

I had hoped SODELPA would have made a good stand but all they showed was an ego boost for the few dinosaurs left around.

They had nothing to offer anyone, especially the young. The younger generation can now see how the world works and what it has to offer from available technology and want to be able to compete with them.

The young simply did not want to be held back and oppressed by a way of life that so many elders want to live in.

A sad day for Indo Fijians. We have just voted for a coup leader. We have also enabled the Constitution 2013 to become legal.

That constitution contains immunity provisions. Any future military leader can execute a coup without fear of prosecution. If the military power shifts it may be a vote we regret. The short term gain may be outweighed by long term pain.

Congrats to Bainimarama anyway said...

I am glad that the people have spoken...Though this seem to play right into the hands of the junta. One thing is sure, Bainimarama offered the Indians what NFP and FLP could not offer - equality . The Fijians offered their votes based on what he has done for them. This is what citizens needed, though Bainimarama created many blunders along the way this were little compared to what people experienced in reality. I am a long time critic of Bainimarama but lessons should be learnt-The race card no longer buys votes. Lets live together in peace, and save our country from ruin!

Party have called for the ceasing of counting sighting election fraud. Even if the election was rigged the general feeling seem to be FF deserved to win. The general feeling is that past governments lacked the political will to change the status quo. Bainimarama managed to do just that amidst immense opposition. I am not a great supporter of his for reasons that are shared on this blog, however the lesson for politicians is that Fiji citizens were disadvantaged by rogue politicians who were self serving and served the interests of only a few rather than serving all who call Fiji their home regardless of race, religion or creed!

The implications of this election are truly seismic. FLP is gone. NFP looks like it will get back into Parliament. It is ironic that NFP should win such a pyrrhic victory even after lobbying for the common roll since before WW2. For the first time in Fiji's electoral history FFP has garnered a truly multi-racial voting bloc. The Alliance never came close even under the old electoral system. The tried and true method of racial politics that was the foundation of elections since 1963 and even all the way back to 1916 is shattered. The FFP officially has a voting base although it would have been good if exit polling had been allowed so that we can see FFP's pull among the youth in particular. Looks like SODELPA and the other parties will have to radically reimagine their electoral strategies in the next election and their candidate selection processes as well. Make no mistake this new electoral system will encourage more educated people to stand in elections. Well done FFP. Just please no more shenanigans.

All Parties concern and suspicious a while ago on TV as to why the counting was suspended is correct.

Even M Chaudary wasn't happy and shouting at Vijay to go and read the decree.

The reason for the suspension being that the regime have to re-think of a strategy to make this election look real and wasn't a fraud causing suspicion.

It seems they were thinking of the best strategy like stopping the bias in a way which is too late but Saneem knows how to hold back their suspicious. Man Saneem your mouth is a BIGGER LIAR then your cousin Khaiyum in defending the suspension as people were going for lunch. When clearly it was suspended for few hours.

Who else but Khaiyum is still laughing all the way to the bank again to collect his big pay for his back door deal well executed.

My analysis:

FLP : they paid the price for keeping their link with Chaudry. Indians had no choice but to leave the boat. The insult was too great for farmers.

NFP : slightly more popular than before, but still unattractive to ethnic Fijians.

SOLDELPA : by focussing mostly on rural / older / ethnic Fijians, they lost considerable support. As the rural population is declining, their base is shrinking. Normally, their "job" should have been easy, but they lost miserably.

Fiji First : Indians are now probably less than 30% of the total population, and ethnic Fijians around 60%+. Clearly the party got most of the Indian vote, but that was far from enough. they managed to get also more than 50% of the Fijian vote. It is clear that lowering the age of voting worked in their favor. Urban Fijians are sensibly different from their rural counterpart. Bad news for the future of more "traditional parties".

Smaller parties /independent candidate : the people of Fiji prefer to stick to a few large parties now, which seems to be a change from the past. Unlikely for the, to succeed.

LETS DO SOME MATHS as for now out of 397,891 Valid Votes

FjFirst = 239,261 Votes
Out of which Bainimarama = 167,224 Votes

So Take away Bainimarama and FijiFirst balance = 72,037

SODELPA = 106,406 Votes

CLEARLY SODELPA STILL WINS WHICHEVER WAY YOU LOOK AT IT IF YOU TAKE AWAY THE FREEBIES LIKE FREE ROADS, FREE BRIDGES, FREE BUS FARE WHICH ANY TOMU TOCE AND DOCE CAN DO USING BORROWED MONEY FROM CJINA.

This propaganda works well in Fiji due to lack of infrastructure and high cost of living for 8 years.

HOWEVER, SODELPA CLEARLY WINS AND TOPS ALL FFP CANDIDATES VOTES IN OTHER WAY IF YOU DIG DEEP INTO IT.

THEREFORE IT'S FITTING TO SAY THAT SODELPA DID WELL WITHOUT ANY FREEBIES TO HAND OUT LIKE BAINIMARAMA DID.

Anonymous said...

@Truth Prevails

Using the same practice we could also take away Ro K and eventually continuing along these lines end up the the RFMF mascot cat leading the country

TRUTH FOLLOWER said...

@TRUTH PREVAILS

In other words Bainimarama wins along fraud line of freebies NOT through merit as ALL in SODELPA did.

So the itaukei majority still speaks out for wanting to protect SODELPA's interest. And it seems they did well without the Indians as Bai uses that racial fairness claim line to his advantage while on power for 8 years covering his dirty plot to cover his footprint.

In other words the Fijian itaukei should not be underestimated as their interest is still very much exist in Fiji.

Most that went for Bai would still expect the Freebies to come by for the next 4 years and if that happens then clearly someones head will scrutinised if not decapitated by the very same voters who probably should be there at the first place.

Now I can see where your Maths is comming from and its not far the truth. In other words respect Fiji as the majority still like their land protected and those who jum ship may regret it later. And hopefully the boat is still around when they decided to return after 4 years. Cunning FREEBIES!!!

Well the commentators on this board were natural born idiots but now they have become first class idiots and the losers group that are calling for the voting count to stop should tie their legs and jump in the Sigatoka river. Maybe, RFMF can come up with a less painful solution.

Bainimarama was there when it mattered. That's what mattered..not just words but action. I hope the "older politicians" will understand this. Stop fighting over petty issues and get to work. At least we would like you to be there when we need help! Bainimarama is not perfect, but his vision is real

The election results should not be painful. We are glad democracy is alive again. Candidates should start working the ground from tomorrow if not today. 4 years is not very far!

It seems, that a large number of Indigenous Fijian have voted for Fiji First. Indians at the current poll are a minority (approx 40%) of population. Please wake up, be real Christian like. Be truthful, not now, always.

I can't stop laughing when I hear that Frank had an advantage because he had been in post for 8 years.

Boy, how about considering the massive disadvantage that could have been gained in 8 years due to all that time for people to build their loathing, hate and distrust of him.

Think about it !

BULLSHIT, STOP SPREADING LIES.

MAJORITY OF FFP ARE Indians otherwise where would they go. FLP AND NFP dont have them and clearly they wont go for SODELPA except a few. Remember there is only one Indian candidate for SODELPA who could draw some numbers.

SO LOGICALLY WHERE ARE THEY?

DEFINITELY MAJORITY 90% are for Bai's FFP. And minority for FFP are INDIGENOUS maybe approx 20% AND THAT ADDS TO THE SURGE FFP TALLY.

REMEMBER SODELPA HAS MAJORITY INDIGENOUS AND THATS WHY THE NUMBERS IS HIGH (>80%) INDIGENOUS VOTERS.

Come on do some maths and come back with a better estimate.

I was driking grog close to a polling station, when the number 279 was called out repeatedly during counting,I was surprised, this polling area is SVT and SDL dominated area,I was laughing, the term 'turncoats' came up in my mind. Tabaiwalu will now realise why no one wanted to 'vakabalea na nona i tatau', it was passed around as none of those elders sitting around the grog bowl wanted to do the honour, eventually a man from Rewa who was standing outside the hall, went in and accepted to do the honour,LQ saw this and quickly left after his speech,he knew that the tide has turned, his footprints no longer appear on the sands of time.Sa kila o LQ ni sa oti na veivakabauti eke vei koya.Anyway we stayed behind and enjoyed the free grog and smokes. So yesterday I was drinking grog and heard the number 279 called out ten to eleven times before 317 is called once or at the most twice,I left,I knew that my thesis about LQ's campaign was right, the tides has turned. So I rang my brother who was an election official in Eastern and they have completed counting in their pollling station I asked him which party dominated your polling station,I was surprised when he said not one party, only one candidate dominated the votes, the number 279.So I left for the next polling station at Vatuwaqa and again after seeing the same results I left for home thinking, people are in for a big surprise, one man will dominate the election, even the Sodelpa candidate Vane is benefitting from the number 279,her number is 277,the less educated elderly people of this nation mistook her no 277 for 279,check it out.Even at one stage Vane was leading Ro T.But who is Vane I didnt know her, then I checked her number and there the answer lies,277 being mistaken by the less educated and the elderly as PM'S no. 279.This is my theory only, but check it out, folks. 99% of those votes were meant for PM.

@Tui Viti

Wrong theory.

The young guys were voting for the best looking women !

Anonymous said...

The Youth Vote was a missed opportunity for SODELPA, as was the race card. Young people live in a globilised environment, want security, employment, and a sense of identity and belonging. Unfortunately SODELPA had a Leader that was connected to the past, could not identify with the common people and offered no vision for the future.
The welcoming news of Bainamarama's victory will indeed depict through time that the "emperor has no clothes"

Anyone can still say that multi-racial still fails Fiji. And its true from the two majority races perpective. One has only to listen here to get a feeling on whats happening on reality about the Indian feeling towards us an for sure it will be the other way around. You don't expect any owner to give it away if they are insulted.

Indians still don't accept the Indigenous or the other way around for some reason. Some reason are too complex then others probably. Unless this happens then Fiji even under Bai will fail on multi-racial test levels.

The first and the only Indian we've heard saying you indigenous may lose their rights is SOLDEPA candidate Nirmal Singh or Sushil Prabhakar on YOUTUBE. Even your closest Indian friend weren't say that to your face and we may never hear another in our lifetime. Why? Ask them?

From an indigenous perspective our hate is probably due to our bad experience in the past. Our cultures or language or beliefs have barriers maybe. Causing stir in some areas in our living. Though not much as the Politicians depicts. But from the Indians perspective. NOT TOO SURE WHY? Any Tip....

@Tui Viti

It shows how this election have intentions. To hide FFP propaganda and win the election through trapping tactics.

ONE BIG QUESTION IS, WHY DID THE NUMBER STARTED SO HIGH AT 135 BECAUSE IT IS TOO MUCH TO SOME IN A COUNTRY WHERE MAJORITY ARE VILLAGERS.

AND ANOTHER QUESTIONS IS WHY WASN'T THE CANDIDATES PARTY LOGO SHOWN ON BALLOT PAPERS?

THESE AND OTHERS WERE CLEARLY DESIGN TO UNDERMINE VOTERS INTELLIGENCE AND ALLOW THEM TO MAKE MISTAKES AS WE NOW SEE. MUCH WORSE UNDER PRESSURE AT GUN POINT INCLUDING THREATS FOR 8 YEARS.

It is therefore fair to say that the elections wasn't fair and wasn't free as it could be. One of the many solutions was the absent of a caretaker government which didn't happen.

So any nice comment from the international observers team must be scrutinised everytime and not accepted easily.

Update: 9:53PM SUPERVISOR of Elections has confirmed awhile ago that no voting results would be released tonight.

Speaking to members of the media at the Flour Mills of Fiji gymnasium, Mohammed Saneem could not confirm when the next set of results would be announced.

The last set of results were released after 2pm today with only a few members of media sticking around into the evening.

Democracy is alive in Fiji..but a sad day when we as a nation have just witnessed that we could allow thuggery to bring about change then legitimatising it through a democratic process...All the best with the next coup...I am glad though that natural philosophy never lies..what you sow you reap!!!

Democracy is giving people a choice and 60% of the people made the wrong choice according to some.

Easily solved, accept it continue to show the world you do not want democracy.

Your choice.

The Indians in Fiji had voted en-masse for NFP, then FLP, and now for FFP. I felt very saddened by the victimization of this community in the 1987 coup as well as in the 2000 coup. They cried out, "no more coups".

But now they have joined the coup culture by supporting Bainimarama's coup...out revenge perhaps?

Welcome to the club Indos. Now they are in the same boat as the Fijian nationalists.

The game is over for the GCC and SODELPA. The people of Fiji have woken up (more so the Itaukies). They have now realised the damage self serving GCC and extrimists in SODELPA have done to Fiji over the past 40 or so years since independence.
The GCC were sucking the blood of their own people by taking away all the lease money and enjoying themselves. The grassroot itaukies were silently suffering.
There was no money or jobs for them to improve their lives and thus the genration after generation of itaukies suffered.

The extrimists in itaukie society and the GCC cleaverely put all the blame On indians and the masses got engulfed in that hatered for indians while the elite in the itaukie enjoyed life.

This election has changed every thing. Now and in future every body will have to work hard to enjoy the goodies of life.

Every Fijian will have to contribute to make Fiji a country the way the world should be.
I am sure the Bainimarama govt will provide the platform and it will be for the people to take advantage of the oppotunities.
The itaukies should move away from communal life in koros and try to live individual life with ther wife/husbands and children. It will be hard and demanding to start off but you can make your life and your childrens life better with commitment over future years.

I am not saying to break your contact with your tauvoos but minimise it and have faith in yourself and one day you will successed. it may take a generation but your next generation will be proud of you.

Everyone in Fiji should learn to live on their own and have faith in themsels. Hatered for each other will bring nothing but desater.

One should question, why was the election date set for September 2014, as far back as 5 years ago?
What was it that the Regime had to put into and have in place in order to carry out this fake election and why on earth did Fijians accept an election by an illegal entity?
Clearly, and blind Freddy could have told you this, the Election results were decided pre December the 5th. 2006.

mark manning said...

The Indian component of the Fijian population, just doesn't realise that they have also been conned yet!
The Chinese are the people who have so much to gain by taking over and infiltrating the Pacific Islands. It's china which needs a Naval Base there and India will send its people because it's simply running out of land and no doubt, has as many corrupt politicians and business People as China.
All Fijians will pay a heavy price unless Frank and Aiyaz are removed.

We survived 8 years, another 4 years no problem. If not good change them after 4 years. As for Chaudary,do the wise thing as Jai Ram Reddy did. Since your entry into politics in this country, people has suffered, even though you may be not at fault. You might not be lucky to lead this Country.
God bless Fiji

moron watch said...

hahaha...ooh boy, mark manning ranting again like the old fool he is. No actually, China wants a naval base in Darwin, Sydney and Perth to keep an eye on its investments in the mining sector to ensure the thieving white aussies do not steal as Clive Palmer did from his Chinese mining partners recently to fund his farce of an election campaign.

MY THOUGHT said...

Either way the itaukeis wins...They will dominate government and opposition. It will be a battle between conservatism and liberalism. The Indos are insignificant this new political climate

Anonymous said...

The Indians have just nailed their last nail in the coffin..they have given power to a itaukei who will never ever free them from their bondage. The itaukei do not care what happens to the GCC, nor do they care about the electoral system (voting will still be determined on racial issues anyway), nor do they care about land they have never fully utilized (land will always be on native hands for years to come). This election is a victory for itaukei's, dominating both government and opposition. Indians have played right into their hands. Poor Indians - Jai Ram Reddy was their hope - his gone! MPC was their hope - his gone! Biman tried to resurrect - but fell short...Thank you for giving Bainimarama your votes. Remember he is itaukei!
