Youth activist names Bainimarama as his attacker

Human rights activist and the youth president of the
SODELPA Party, Pita Waqavonovono, publicly names Frank Bainimarama as the ring leader of the attack on him at QEB on Christmas Eve 2006. He sent this article titled, 'Frank was there', to C4.5 48 hours ago.

"I looked up to see Frank Bainimarama kicking and verbally abusing me. He called soldiers to come and drag me to the cricket pitch."

I want to share with you a short explanation of one of the reasons why I feel Frank Bainimarama cannot be allowed to run Fiji.

I have seen the true face of Bainimarama's leadership. I know many people in Fiji share the same experience as I do.

Christmas Eve 2006, myself and other pro-democracy activists were taken from our homes late at night and brought to the QEB Military Camp under the guise of a meeting with the Military Council. What happened instead was an attack on all of us.

When I was brought into the camp, there were two things that directly stood out for me. One is that all the lights in the QEB were turned off and secondly was the overbearing smell of alcohol.
Bainimarama the thug: real colours revealed.
I recall the events of that night clearly. It involved soldiers punching and kicking us, and threatening to murder us. At one point, I was certain that I would not leave that place alive.

Notable people at the QEB Military Camp that night were Frank Bainimarama, Roko Ului Mara and Pita Driti, all visible under the moonlight. Only a group of about 15 men were involved in the attack. While we were being attacked by a few soldiers in the army ground, I looked up to see Frank Bainimarama kicking and verbally abusing me. He called soldiers to come and drag me to the cricket pitch.

On the cricket pitch soldiers were ordered by someone to run over us and I recall been told at this point to keep my head down. A soldier came to me and pulled me by the hair, and started cutting patches of my hair off. I was told that he would cut me up and throw me in the sea – that no one would care about me.

During this assault, there were men singing Christmas Carols by the ground and cheering on their peers. I also recall been ordered to run to Lami and take down banners at the Vugalei Democracy Shrine.

While we ran, I was especially targeted by three soldiers who kept hitting and swearing at me. They later pinned me down, and proceeded to kick and punch me; they put me in a military truck and drove up towards Nadua Secondary School, where they literally threw me out of the moving truck.

At this point, another truck with a different set of soldiers, took me back to the Military Camp. A soldier in this truck gave me water and asked for apologies. He told me that not all soldiers were doing this and they were following orders ‘from the top’.

When I reached the camp, I was hurried into a cell; and joined by 3 soldiers who told me that Bainimarama was very angry with my comments. They proceeded to further torture me, trying to get me to promise to never speak out against Bainimarama. This point of the ordeal was very traumatic.

Another soldier with the voice similar to Roko Ului intervened and told off the people in the cell. He ordered that the beatings stop, and after this they put me in a car and they drove me out towards Nabua Secondary School, where they asked me to get off.

I recall been helped by two young boys from here, who took me to the Matua Taxi Base in Mead Road, where I got onto a taxi and went straight home to a family that was clearly angered at what the Military had done.

All soldiers that participated in the attack smelled of alcohol.

QEB: School visits during the day but scenes of torture at night.

I was told that night, to leave Suva. I left on Boxing Day for Levuka where I was informed by my family that someone had sent soldiers to my house in Suva, to take me in for another meeting. I was later informed via the media that I was put on a travel ban.

I recall thinking to myself, that if these men with guns feared a young person’s mouth or opinions, than I was definitely in the right.  That's why they fear us, because we breathe and preach Freedom. We are willing to die to purchase a better Fiji. I have never gone silent and since then I have been arrested three times for just speaking out against the Bainimarama Government.

In joining SODELPA I have invested much of my energy and time into ensuring many young people understand the dictatorship we are trying to dethrone. Every day I report to the SODELPA office and stand alongside many other Freedom Fighters who have been arrested and abused for refusing to accept the Coup of 2006. There is a sense of honor in their daily activities, a dedication to serving people and safeguarding Fiji.

We do not have a bad Military. We just have very bad self-serving leaders.

This man Frank Bainimarama is a paranoid control freak, a man who masks all his crimes with freebies and development. Do not be fooled, Frank is afraid of you! He is afraid that more people will hear the truth about the bitter road we have had to endure for the last 8 years. Frank Bainimarama is pumping as many  resources as he can in order to prevent the truth from been heard. We the People, have a simple solution - Change the Government.

Friends, after all the nepotism, militarisation of the state, the corruption, the torture and the intimidation, and even after all the deaths at the hands of the state, we have been asked to now vote for a Government of the People. And Bainimarama is pretending to be a Saint or our Savior.

I am voting for the party that will bring about real change. I don't need anything to be given to me free. I am voting for the Party that will seriously look into human rights violations and take action.

The Party that will restore and protect elements of the Fijian administration and my culture. I am voting for SODELPA because I know that peace is guaranteed. And many young people feel the same.

When election day comes, I know it will be an emotional day for me and many other people in Fiji. My hopes, anger, aspirations and dreams will all rest on that tick. I pray that this message can be used, to show the true heart of people in SODELPA for Freedom Hope and Glory and an end to the Coup Culture.

Vinaka, Pita, for your steadfast courage. You are a bright light in a very dark sky. You will make a great leader.

SODELPA it is. But the elections are fixed. Our votes won't count. Yet we will vote anyway.

And unlike the RFMF, we shall never give up. We shall never surrender.

The next phase: Ratu Sukuna Park. Come prepared.

I do not think Pita is lying....I am for a PM for the people....someone who can genuinely lead us and our lovely country to freedom peace and harmony.....not someone who tortures and forces decrees that will bring disharmony to the people.....someone who has a vision...someone who has an vision for the country......and not someone who gives free things that are also called bribes to get into power.......someone who is trustworthy.....not someone who lies to the people.....someone who is transparent.....not someone who hides his salary and gets it paid by someone who is not even a civil servant.....I want someone who is fair to all citizens and not just appoint people in their family to hold posts that are better held by more qualified people who can do a better job.....I want someone who is stern and not easily swayed by money and power......I want someone who is sensible and not defensive when asked questions......I want a PM who will stop blaming people for their stupid actions........someon who has a vision and integrity.....yes we are fed up of living in a Viti of uncertainty.........we want a Viti of Certainty....

I think the time has come for FijiFirst to BE QUASHED, DEMOLISHED AND FORGOTTEN and for SODELPA and others to prosper in Gods willing come Wed the 17th.

Simply for the very reason Pita encounter is the reason they should be SHOWN the DOOR AND DESTROYED. How can people not see what Bainimarama did to Pita and others who were punished for simply voicing their Godly right.

Anyone who votes for FijiFirst is supporting Bai's crimes so VOTE Bai OUT people.

Pita, even now the thugs mock you, but God knows the truth of your ordeal. Keep the faith. They will soon face justice. If they steal this election, we will know. More importantly, He will know. We will not surrender Fiji to thugs and traitors. If SODELPA or another party had done this to you, I would still feel the same. They must yield power. They must pay for their crimes.

Pita this is nothing what Indians suffered under Rabuka, Speight and Qarase. Your treatment is far better than what they faced and will face if sodelpa wins. I have seen the inciting video made by sodelpa. This video shows how much sodelpa executives can go so low to discredit FF. They have used lies and peoples emotions to get their votes. Sodelpa is a racist party. It should be charged for inciting racial hatred.

"ALL THAT IS HIDDEN MUST BE BROUGHT TO LIGHT"

CAPTAIN TIKOITOGA is very well aware of all that has happened to these brave citizens who were tortured by the Evil Frank Bainimara whom he serves.

I wonder if he sleeps well each night knowing the EVIL AND WICKED atrocities Frank has committed against his own people and the very fact that THEY WERE INNOCENT speaks a lot about this narcissist MONSTER in human form portraying himself as a godly saint - ALL IN DISGUISE in order to escape his punishment for the unlawful wrongdoings committed against Pita and the others by his BLOODY CRIMINAL hands!!

We pray that our soldiers whose lives were spared in the Golan Heights will now realise who Frank Bainimarama is and do what is right on Election Day!

No amount of stunt publicity and free handouts to buy the voting conscience of the weak-minded will save Frank and Aiyaz in the end.

Sadam Hussein in his good times thought that NOTHING could touch him but in the end he lost everything, running for his life, ending up like a fearing rat in a hole! His just punishment was meted out to him and so shall it be likewise to Frank and Aiyaz and all who serve EVIL!!! NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRY TO COVER UP FOR THEIR EVIL, THEY WILL FACE GOD IN HIS JUSTICE!!

THERE IS A TIME FOR EVERYTHING!

FRANK BAINIMARAMA AND HIS BAND OF MEN ARE CRIMINALS - THOSE IN THE MILITARY (not forgetting the Police force) WHO HAVE CONSPIRED AND COMMITTED EVIL DEEDS AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF FIJI. THEY MUST BE TRIED BEFORE A COURT OF JUSTICE!!! THE PEOPLE OF FIJI ARE FOOLISH INDEED IF THEY CANNOT SEE WHO FRANK BAINIMARAMA REALLY IS. A MAN WHO HAS NO FEAR OF THE LORD NOR GODLY VALUES INSTILLED IN HIM CANNOT AND MUST NOT LEAD THIS NATION!!

May the Lord's just judgement be upon these evil and wicked men...may His merciful face shine upon the victims who have been tortured by these criminals...may their prayers be heard...may the righteous rejoice at the Justice of God coming upon these evil men and upon those also who plot and scheme with Frank and Aiyaz ..who establish false decrees in order to persecute their enemies and save themselves! WOE TO THESE EVIL AND WICKED MEN!!

This statement is full of holes and wouldnt hold in court.Pita said " It involved soldiers punching and kicking us...at one point I was certain that i wouldnt leave the place alive" Okay after being assaulted by a group of 15 soldiers by being 'punched and kicked' Pita was still able to see and recognise PM Bainimarama and the other 2 officers, note he had earlier stated that ALL QEB lights were out.Under the moonlight - he was able to recognise the 3 officers with all QEB Lights put out [his own words] under the moonlight. We cant see shit under the moonlight only shapes and figures. Then in his next statement that he was able to 'recognise a voice similar to Roko ului' that is more factual, you cant recognise a uniformed soldier wearing bush hats under the moonlight AFTER BEING KICKED AND PUNCHED BY 15 MEN,you serious Pita? Was this post done so as not to implicate a certain Officer who is your Kai vata? Boy you made matters worse by posting this blog,if you were to file charges later in Court, this blog post will be used by lawyers against you, mark my words. Food for thought?

Breaking news, the split in Sodelpa has widened,Qarase has left to campaign overseas after a fallout with Sodelpa leader Ro. T.understandably this fallout came about due to the dispute over the post of Media Manager, when Sai Radrodro was 'couped' by other Sodelpa stalwarts for Jese Sikivou.Ms Radrodro was Ro T's choice and selected during their caucaus meeting. It is being informed by insiders that the Stalwarts of Sodelpa were angered when Ms Radrodro made a press release informing Qarase to take his cue from Ro. T and stop making racist comments.Ro. T was campagining in Kadavu when Sai Radrodro was 'couped' and Mr Sikivou took over. She was saddened by this event that made her shed tears as pictured in the news media.Insiders have provided info. that as of right now there are fights over Ministerial post should Sodelpa win the elections. There are also diferrences on their choice of whom to be President since one faction is pushing for a certain High Chief and the other pushing for a former PM.Their are clashing and the two factions diehards will never back down.Stay tuned, more to come.

WANANAVU PITA.

Anonymous said...

The treatment meted to Pita was shameful.

We already know why he received this treatment. It was in retaliation for his vocal support of democracy after the military coup.

The events of 1989 and 2000 were also shameful. Some of the victims of those days experienced worse than what Pita did. But that does not excuse or diminish one bit the injustice of what Pita was forced to endure.

If a SODELPA or other government tried to kick out Indo-Fijians or infringe on their civil rights, I would vociferously oppose them. Knowing Ro Teimumu's character well, and knowing SODELPA should be poised for an election landslide, I have no fear that such a scenario will arise.

Pita's statement is powerful. I hope the day will come when he'll be able to buttress it with his personal testimony in a fair and open court. Of course he can expect then to be cross-examined, and no doubt by someone asking how he could make out the identities of Bainimarama, Driti and Mara in the dark. Of course, we all know that we can recognise people in moonlight, and so his assertion cannot be easily dismissed in a fair court, despite the deceitful claim of Anonymous@ 8:39.

I'm amongst those who expect this power-crazed regime to manipulate the voting results electronically in order to steal the elections. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I don't believe this regime will allow a fair vote, especially since it has not allowed for a fair election campaign process.

So, my advice to all Fiji-loving fellows is to gird yourself spiritually and psychologically as if for war, because a stolen election will leave us only one last option for defending Fiji, much as we'd prefer otherwise.

SODELPA - A racist party led by three racist leaders Ro Kepa, Qarase and Rabuka. They only believe in getting back to power by scaremongering, fear, lies, using hatred against indo Fijians. They did not do much from 1987 to 2006 to lift the lives of itaukei people.
FLP and NFP - Indian Nationalist parties. Who needs them in multicultural Fiji,
FFP - led by a multiracial leader. Brought about huge change to the lives of poor and improvised people. Its policies is about growing Fiji and moving Fiji ahead. A vote for FF is a vote for equality, stability and growth and development. SODELPA should be charged for inciting itaukei people.

Is he so naive as to consider that his true intentions can not be seen by those not blinded by hate.

His concerns are not those of bringing people to justice for wrongs done but of using any tactic possible to get himself and his party noticed.

Similar to his party leader nothing of interest or value to offer and clutching at straws.

Frank didn't want anyone to question him - he still doesn't - and those who did were given a taste of his ugly thuggery and brutality. If you really want to be a leader, own up to your shit Frank. Own up, too, all those shit stirrers comparing what happened to Pita to what had happened in earlier coups - two wrongs don't make a right and get over your one eyed approach because Fiji is doomed with people like you justifying the 2006.

Iam not trying to justify the events of 2006.If you lazy scums had taken the same approach in 1987 and 2000 as you are doing today, these things would never had happened.
But at that time you guys were happy robbing and raping the innocent.
Pita you taking about torture. This is nothing compared to what a pregnant lady got for violating the Sunday decree. She was forced to wash the clothes of soldiers for the whole day and later raped by monsters who are today SODELPA supporters and crying democracy. The sin of this woman was washing clothes on a sunday.
The sufferings of the Fijian race today is Gods way of giving you guys the same treatment that the Indian community had endured during 1987 and 2000.
Have the Fijian race ever asked for foregiveness for thier actions. And you guys want to erase the coup culture.Shame on you all.
Today its Bainimarama, tomorrow it will be someone else and history will continue to repeat as long as we have thugs like Qarase,Ro Marama trying to play the race card.

Anon @ 2:00 PM and earlier, that's quite a chip you have on your shoulder. Still blogging about it all these years. Even questioning Pita as to where he was at in '87. He was probably in nursery school, but now you reckon he's part of the problem. And why? Because he stood up against Frank's military coup.

But, but wait! Isn't that exactly what you wish others had done in 1987? Isn't your gripe that they didn't speak out and act out against the military coups that took place then? So why should they have spoken out then but not in 2006 or since?

You say the suffering of the Fijian race today is God's way of giving Fijians the same treatment the Indian community endured in 1987 and 2000. I don't speak for God, even if you do, but why is it that you think God would consider the military overthrow of our elected governments to have been wrong in 1987 and 2000 but okay in 2006? Is it because God favours one race but not another? Or is this a reflection of your own deepseated racial prejudice against the "lazy scum", based on deep pains inflicted on you in years past?

Even by your own logic, isn't it possible that an omniscient God who stands outside of history saw the coming events of 2006 and so allowed the events of 1987 and 2000 as a rough recompense? A form of karma, if you will.

Wasn't it Mahatma Gandhi who said that following the law of an eye for an eye, we will all become blind? He was famous for nonviolent protest, was he not? The same peaceful kind of protest for which Pita was punished.

You say that "thugs" like Qarase and Ro Teimumu are playing the race card. Oh, really? They're thugs now? In what way? To my knowledge they've never beaten, or ordered beaten, anyone. Can't say that about the candidate for Fiji First now, can we?

They do speak out for indigenous rights. Are indigenous rights and non-indigenous rights necessarily mutually exclusive? Cannot indigenous Fijians and Indo-Fijians both have rights?

A lot of talk these past years about a New Fiji -- most of it hokum. Fiji won't make progress on these issues until people can elect their own representatives and they stop talking past each other with the view that everything is a zero-sum game. But in clearing away the sanctimony, hypocrisy and race-baiting of the Bainimarama regime, maybe we will begin to come to understand the need to respect the majority will but protect minority rights, the essence of a democratic system of governance.

It's just as well that you're no longer in Fiji, because until your own attitudes change, you'd be part of the problem, not the solution.

As usual, the regime trolls can't seem to make up their minds as to what lies they want us to believe. Which are we to think -- that everyone already knows Pita's story because he's told and retold it many times over the years, or that he's withheld the story all this time and only now "opportnistically "released it to media in order to affect the elections? Both stories can't be true now, can they? And yet that's what the regime sapotas are trying to tell us.

Some of them are trying to suggest this is just Pita's personal problem. "That's what you get, they say. They don't finish the rest of the thought, though: "for exercising your God-given human rights". But because these are rights to which we're all entitled, this isn't just Pita's personal problem, now, is it?

In more than one sense, the entire country has been brutalised by this regime. Only a few individuals have had the courage to speak out, and many of them were physically abused like Pita. And only some of those who were physically abused have had the courage to step forward.

That's not too surprising, considering that their tormenters are still at large and in power, after all. It's also not too surprising that this illegal and tyrannical regime would pay people who have no morals or dignity to attack in comments on this blogsite those, like Pita, who still have the courage to tell the truth. It's not surprising, but it's still very disappointing.

RACIST SODELPA PARTY said...

SODELPA Supporters are once again using Fiji Indians as scapegoats to win votes from gullible voters. They did in 1987, 2000 and 2005 elections. In 2001 and 2005 they rigged the elections. The ex supervisor of elections printed extra ballot papers and ensured SDL win. The SODELPA video tape distributed shows distorted lies, fabrication and scaremongering. SODELPA leaders use race to advance their cause. Learn from your ex terrorist Apisai Tora who is now a Fiji First supporter.

Just Situational Logic said...

"If FijiFirst was the only party standing in the election, the polling stations would be empty."

That's exactly the strategy we should have followed. All of the legitimate parties should have announced their boycott of the elections long ago, unless various agreed measures were first taken by the regime to ensure open and fair campaigns and the inviolability of the ballot box. We didn't have any of those things in this election.

This election is illegal. Even if Fiji First gets booted out, the election is illegal. Whoever wins should call for new elections in one year's time, under the terms of Fiji's true Constitution, the 1997 Constitution.

After all of the measures it has taken against the legitimate parties and their leaders these past years, the regime could not have had a credible election if it ran unopposed in the face of a general boycott.

By joining in to contest this election, the political parties have effectively legitimised it, even whilst they knew the playing ground was uneven. That was a foolish mistake. What will you say now when Bainimarama steals the election?

When will you learn that we cannot win a stacked game? We cannot keep playing a game where tthe regime gets to make up all of the rules.

Anonymous said...

Just situational logic - let me enlighten you. Under current law and previous law . Section 82 act 9 of the geneva act and section 7 of the fiji constitution , if the a party boycotts and decides not to stand in the elections , the election is to go away .

Little knowledge is always a little embarrassing . I'm glad Sodelpa has leaders n supporters like you - incompetent , and utterly incapable .

Bainimarama under fire

Meanwhile, Fiji’s self-appointed Prime Minister’s being accused of breaching his own election rules.

A strict ban on political advertising and media coverage is now in place ahead of tomorrow’s election, with rule breakers facing up to five years jail time.

Humm FM journalist Dev Sachindra says while other political parties have been busy removing all traces of campaigning, many large billboards of Frank Bainimarama’s face, erected before the election, remain standing.

“In a way, it defeats the purpose of having the blackout because there’s no standard rule for all political parties and candidates.”

Sachindra says a 77 percent turn out from people who often don’t have access to services like roads, is highly impressive.

He says the Fijian Electoral Office is calling it a sign of good things to come.

Sachindra says if the voter turn out is high from the rural people, they’re confident it’s going to be even better on Wednesday.

Oh, Enlightened One at Anonymous 4:09, please edify us further. To which Geneva Act and to which constitution do you refer?

A lot of legislation has been promulgated in Geneva over the years or in other capitals as implementation legislation for conventions signed in Geneva. So, which Geneva Act, precisely?

And which Fiji Constitution? Are you citing the so-called "2013 Constitution", also known as the Bainimarama-Khaiyum Constitution, which was never popularly ratified, is illegal, and, in fact, treasonous? Or are you trying to have your cake and eat it too, by citing the Fiji Constitution of 1997, which the leaders of your party have purported to abrogate?

Finally, you state that the "current law and previous law" you so ambiguously cite mandate that "if a party boycotts and decides not to stand in the elections, the election is to go away". Doesn't that simply prove my point? The legitimate parties should have boycotted the election under the terms imposed by the regime. Better no elections and growing pressure on the illegal regime, than phony and unfair elections contrived for the purpose of legitimising it.

So, please enlighten us further. What would that font of all knowledge, Master Khaiyum, have us believe this time?

@ Anon 12:53 - wow...such hatred and anger for a people who were generous enough to allow slaves albeit Indentured Labourers into their Country. Indentured Labourers who had nothing in their own, poorer than the poor and nothing to live for. Given the right to live in a Country and call it their own but continues to show disrespect to the very people who have granted them more than they would ever have if they remained in their motherland of India scurrying around and scrapping dust to get something to eat. The development of this country was thank you to the English with the hard labour of your people the Indentured Labourers and the generosity of the Fijian people to share what they have with you. Respect is what must be shown for each other and hopefully the younger generation will learn from that and learn to show respect rather than ignorant rants which creates disharmony. True the past coups and including the 2006 coup by Frank were all committed by Fijians but that is telling and people should realise by now that Fijians want change. Change that will benefit their lives but having said that, these changes must be introduced and gradual and assist in their understanding of the demands and rigours of todays society as opposed to the village or communal lifestyle they have always lived. You cannot remove a way of life that has existed harmoniously within its tradition over the past 3000 years and you need to show respect towards these traditions particularly the Chiefs. You would do the same when you confront an Indian Guru or King or Princess if there is one today. Hope you brush your teeth today and remove that sour taste in your mouth and lets share the flavour of yagona that will unify our nation rather than split us further apart. RESPECT

I would like to know ; have Fijians really accepted us ? Or do they loathe and envy our hard work , dedication . Entrepreneurial skills . ? We want unity .. , but just because we have lived in a country for over 100 years , doesn't mean we accept second class citizenry . We want a fair life like The Lord Christ gave us .

@ Ram Vikash...Vinaka for your blog...In life we learn that there will always be good and bad people, people who show respect and are given respect and those that don't. It is not a question to ask but as a Christian as I note you are, a question to give for yours will be the glory in the Kingdom of God rather than the Glory of this earth. From my personal respect, people are very respectful when they show respect and Im sure you are a respectful person and would be respected for being firstly a decent human being. The imagination creates all other illusions of race, colour and issues which divide people. We have all grown up together in unity and harmony in Fiji and it is only politics that has divided us and we pray and hope that a worthy leader will be blessed by God to lead our country forward to prosperity and redemption and we the people of Fiji will live in unity and respect for one another. You know your not a second class citizen...Gone are those days when Fiji was a Colony and everyone other than Europeans were treated as second class citizens. We the people of Fiji will work towards understanding and appreciating each other, each others cultures and values and beliefs. Vote Freedom...
