Fiji citizens put a fight to save flag

Growing resistance to plan to dump flag.

Irrelevant and riddled with colonialism.

That's Frank Bainimarama's reasoning for ditching the flag and unveiling a new one on Independence Day in October.

Bainimarama claims he can come up with a flag more relevant for the New Fiji.

"We need to replace the symbols on our existing flag that are out of date and no longer relevant, including some anchored to our colonial past.

"The new flag should reflect Fiji's position in the world today as a modern and truly independent nation state."

The goon has resorted to justifying his arbitrary decision by saying New Zealand's doing it so why not Fiji.

But hang on - New Zealand and other democratic countries hold a referendum when they want to change something as major as their flag, don't they?

That's right - the people of Fiji have not been consulted.

As the National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad says, there should be a referendum.

"An issue of national importance, especially when it involves an issue that has become an indelible part of our history, symbolizing transition from 96 years of Colonial Rule to full Independence 45 years ago, must involve the entire population of Fiji, including their elected representatives."

Bainimarama says there is no need for a referendum, he has spoken and that's it. He says the competition will run for two months and the voice of every Fijian will be heard.

Will be heard how? So now every Fijian is a designer, artist, and painter? And everyone's voice will be heard in two month. Bullcrap.

And, sorry, Bainimarama your changing the flag won't wash away Fiji's colonial past.

"When one looks at our institutions, names of our major roads and streets, they are named in honour of colonial rulers, administrators and monarchs," says Prasad. "Aren’t these remnants of Colonialism, if PM’s logic is given credibility?

"This government also still attaches our Indo-Fijian community to colonial history," he says.

"The preamble describes Indians as descendants of indentured labourers from British India. What nonsense!"

This is insulting. India was a British Colony, so was Fiji and many other countries under the rule of the British Empire.

Therefore, the preamble basically describes Indo-Fijians as British Indians!

Like all sugar coated snow jobs (remember the re-branding of Air Pacific to Fiji Airways and the theft of?), the regime has organised a national competition to find a winning design.

Beware this PR exercise because it'll be riddled with agendas - remember what they did with the Constitution.

  1. Well well well....If Khaiyum and Bainimarama thinks that taking away the flag will melt the past colonial history i am very dumb founded that if they look around.... the indo-fijians is the master piece of that era.....so indo fijians they must leave this country before we change the flag right??......Is that what they meant by doing this?
They can't change history but they are part it!!!

  2. Bring it on.

The old ones become collectors pieces and the new design provides manufacturing work for those needed to replace the old ones.

Oops, someone has to buy the new ones!

  4. Bainimarama should consult the population of Fiji if they want a new flag.

Otherwise he and Kaiyum can go fark their new flag.

Maybe the Provinces should get the "Present Flag" and form a new Confederacy.

People should burn the new Flag when it comes out.

  5. The people of Fiji were not consulted either when self-promoted General Rabuka dumped Queen Elizabeth as Head of State and declared Fiji a Republic.

On the flag issue, people should have a say

  6. For Bainimarama to say that the current Fiji flag is now not relevant to Fiji's current situation is not factual. The designs and symbols on this present flag are of historical, cultural and traditional importance.

I have fought under this flag for many years since independence in sports, and work and as a soldier I have saluted it because of my patriotic duty. For the liar and dishonest Khaiyum and Bainimarama to dictate the flag design and symbol that I should salute and fight for is tantamount to forcing me to betray my God and my land and my people. Many of my colleagues in battle have sacrificed their lives for the very survival of the flag and the people of Fiji.

They should take their idea to the people who should decide.

  7. It does not make any sense to keep this Flag. this Flag reminds me of Coups, why not change it and forget about coups,Its because of the old Colonial System that has led us to Coups we should go for a modern one that the people will take ownership off and fight for it when it matters most. Now no one bothers when Fiji is at ransom from Dictators, they don't have the will to stand up for the fight because they see in it Britain and not Fiji, What say Fallas

  8. How about a joint party group set up a survey to determine first, IF people wish to consider a change to the flag?

If it is found that the majority do, undertake designs and put it to a vote/referendum which one it should be.

  12. Wouldn't this be counted as an insult
to our Indo-Fijian brothers and sisters, descendants of the early-day hard working girmit labour indenture system? The symbol on the flag was seen as a huge acknowledgement and gratitude of the early day girmit laborers didn't it?

Well, for one thing, Aiyaz will be chuckling away thinking 'another one bites the dust'! He's had his way again!

And recently, Aiyaz and Frank take on the role as 'saints' for the recent payout to 'forgotten' pensioners of Kiritimati Island nuclear testing.

They make a grand speech rubbishing Britain for not doing the right thing all these years. They were not going to allow the great injustice done to these men by Britain and they needed to erase this plight from Fiji's history....blah blah blah blah - only brings to mind the sudden plight of our own Fiji pensioners who were cunningly ripped off by Frank and Aiyaz a few years ago and until today, despite protests, have never seen any justice come their way. All very well for the Kirimati elders but at the same time, all we see is HYPOCRISY time and again!

Incredible how Aiyaz masterminds a change. Always something sinister behind his moves and his puppet has to follow.

Update: 2:13PM ACTING Commissioner Northern Alipate Bolalevu says plans to construct roads in Tunuloa, Vanua Levu can only happen if villagers grant consent to the use of their land.

NEED CONSENT TO BUILD A ROAD TO A VILLAGE

BUT DONT NEED ONE TO CHANGE THE FLAG OF THE NATION???????????

IS THE PRIME MINISTER FARKED IN THE HEAD OR WHAT????????

  14. Folks cmon guys, the people of Fiji have spoken last year when we elected this PM and Cabinet. No need for any consensus, talanoa, discussion, meeting or whatever,

we the members of the Fiji First Party have given the mandate to the PM to act on our behalf,to coin a term often used by MChaudary 'the PM has the peoples mandate from the grassroots level'

The PM and Cabinet were elected by the people to Govern for the people.

Whatever Flag colour, design is chosen will be legalised as the official and democratic choice by the people of Fiji , in this case Fiji First Party, havent you people heard PM referring to his Govt as the Fiji First Govt and not the Fiji Govt.

If you guys want to retain the 1st Flag then I suggest we do it the Democratic Way by going to the Polls and elect a new Govt which in this case is in the next 4yrs or 365 x 4 = 1460 days, he,he,he,he,he,he,ho,ho,ho,ha,ha,

  22. The designer of Fiji's current flag says she is disappointed by prime minister Frank Bainimarama's move to replace it with a new one.

Tessa Mackenzie won the competition in 1970 to design the flag after placing the British Union Jack and the shield from Fiji's Coat of Arms on a sky blue background.

This week, Mr Bainimarama said they were British symbols that were not relevant to a modern, independent Fiji.

Ms Mackenzie, now 80 years old and still living in Suva, told the ABC's Pacific Beat program that she disagrees.

"To say that our past is not relevant in any situation if foolish — we cannot get away from our past," she said.

"I think it's a non-argument to me to say that we want to get away from the colonial past.

    "Your past is there."

A spokesman for the main opposition Sodelpa Party, Peter Waqavonovono, said many people were against changing the flag, which has been used since Fiji gained independence.

"Although there are segments of our population who are bitter about our British past, we all do not share the same sentiments and therefore cannot be forced to accept their ridiculous laws," he said.

Fiji Labour Party president Lavinia Padarath said parliament was the proper forum to debate such a change.

"Mr Bainimarama should realise that in a parliamentary democracy issues of national importance should be approved by the house (parliament)," she said.

"The people of Fiji must decide whether they want the flag changed and if so, what the changes should be."

    Flag 'flies above ethnic differences'

Ms Mackenzie said she believed the majority of Fijians still embraced their current flag design.

"People love it — they really feel proud of it," she said.

"If you ever watch Sevens Rugby, whether we're winning or losing people are waving it... and people wear the flag on their T-shirts in everyday life."

Samson Verma, an expatriate Fijian living in Paris, has started a Facebook page called Keep our Fiji Flag.

"That flag, the way it is, contains much of Fiji's history and it contains much of what Fiji has gone through in the last 150 years or so," he said.

"We see that flag as one that flies above all the ethnic differences in Fiji."

Mr Bainimarama said his competition to design a new flag would start this month and run for two months, with the winning flag to be flown for the first time on Independence Day in October.

Ms Mackenzie said she was not planning on entering a new design into the competition.

"I find it very difficult to envisage what they can choose which will be appropriate and relevant for everybody... not just now but for the future," she said.

"A flag is a national symbol that needs to be very meaningful, so I think it will be very hard to find good symbols."

  30. Why shouldn't Frank design the flag? He overturned the last constitutional government. He shoved the Zpeoples Charter down our throats. He called off elections. He disinvited the opposition to the Leaders of Political Parties process. He scrapped our constitution. He replaced all of our judges. He took away our rights. He gaoled our eleced leaders. He disbanded the GCC. He threw away our constitution and replaced it with a new one he has never even read. He organised our last elections, which were another complete farce.

So why shouldn't he also toss out our flag and replace it with one that suits him? It's his country now, not ours.

    ReplyDelete

  31. At the end of the day, the flag design will be what Khaiyum has designed, maybe with bright green color, just accepted as an outcome of competition and handed in by a kid who probably was given this per-designed flag. All the competition thing is just a farce to avoid criticism and gain credibility. I am waiting for the day when Fiji Citizens get tired of all this crap and start a revolution like Egyptian Revolution.

Instead of the Union Jack our real soldiers fought for and shed blood in real combat missions, have a peacekeeping emblem with embellishments from Nusraf for the valiant surrender of our coward troops who continue to harass and harm unarmed civilians at home.

  41. Two chiefs from Tailevu have given their support to the idea of new flag announced by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

Nausori chief, the Komai Nausori, Ratu Lepani Tagicakibau, and Raralevu chief, the Roko Tui Namata, Ratu Paula Halaiwale both said it was time to change our flag.

Ratu Lepani said many chiefs still believed in the colonial days and wanted the Union Jack to remain in the national flag. He said while Britain had helped Fiji during the colonial days, the nation had changed with new leadership that had put in a lot of changes benefitting all Fijians.

“We support the new leadership and whatever they propose must also be supported,” Ratu Lepani said.

The Roko Tui Namata, Ratu Paula, said he supported the removal of the Union Jack from the new flag as Britain had already played its part in Fiji’s development.

“The Bainimarama Government has done many more things and has made Fiji a better place for Fijians,” he said.

He urged iTaukei chiefs to get away from the colonial thinking and lend their support to the Government. Both chiefs were at the opening of the Legal Aid Commission office in Nausori on Monday officiated by the PM.

Ratu Paula said many people had no money to hire lawyers to represent them in court and the development was good for them. Ratu Lepani said the Legal Aid Commission was now at their doorsteps and has urged the people of Tailevu to make use of it.

He urged those at the Legal Aid Commisson office to go out to villages and talk to them on the assistance they were offering.

  42. John KeNew Zealand Prime Minister John Key has set out his case for changing the flag at his annual Waitangi Day breakfast address this morning and admitted to a touch of envy over the ease with which Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has made the same decision.

Speaking to a group of iwi leaders, business people and politicians Key said he would like to see a new New Zealand flag hoist at the Dawn Service before the 200th anniversary in 2040.
JOHN KEY ADMIRES OUR PM. OILEI>

The NZ Herald said Key referred to the flag of the United Tribes, chosen by Maori from a choice of three in 1834 in a quick vote.

Key said that it’s kind of the Frank Bainimarama way of changing the flag in Fiji and Key has much admiration for it.

Will the new flag be permanent and cannot be changed or removed in future?

  62. This changing the flag is a big red herring introduced by the regime and its advisers (Qorvis) to take the attention of the Fiji public away from all the crap that Kai has created at Fiji TV and all the other issues (no water, no milk, no medicine).

Just because Kai messed up in trying to prop up his brother CEO of FBC, we have to change our flag. I will keep flying my Fiji flag no matter what idiotic flag these lawless people come up with.

    ReplyDelete
  63. good idea...change the flag which was designed a white colonialist anyway. Whats the big deal? Fiji is finally moving with the times, politically, economically and socially. YOU'VE SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE FFP DICKHEAD!

You said that most of the time I'm attacking Indians.
If you look at all my postings I've never attacked Indians as a race. I've attacked individual Indians like Kaiyum and individual Fijians like Maichod Bainisona. And individual kaivalagi like Corrupt Gaytes.

In fact YOU SOUND LIKE Vili Sonalevu Rakoro.

I AM NOT THE ARSEHOLE @8:50 For all I know that could be you, arsehole.

So Julab, I suggest you read 12:44 AM's posting AND MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL BY ANSWERING HIS QUESTIONS, YOU DICKHEAD.

I BET ALL YOU FFP CANT ANSWER HIS QUESTIONS...BECAUSE YOU FFP ARE ALL FARKED IN THE HEAD, and if Kaiyum says "CHANGE THE FLAG" THEN ALL YOU FFP PARROTS, like Bainisona will say "YES SIR, YES SIR, YES SIR."

    ALL YOU FFP ARE PARROTS.
    BAINIMARAMA IS KAIYUM'S PARROT
then you have ALL THE OTHER LITTLE PARROTS.
BUT YOU ARE STILL ALL PARROTS.

WHATEVER KAIYUM SAYS, YOU COME AND SAY.

WHATEVER KAIYUM GIVES AS AN ANSWER THEN YOU STUPID FIJIANS IN FFP COME AND GIVE THAT TO US.
BECAUSE YOU ARE ALL FARKED IN THE HEAD.

I say "CONSULT THE PEOPLE FIRST FRANK AS YOU KNOW THAT IS OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHT".

We have uncovered Aiyaz's strategic way of planning against the people - he and Frank are THUGS AND LIARS and are a DECEIVING COMMUNIST RULING GOVERNMENT. THEY DICTATE AND DEMAND FROM THE PEOPLE!! There is no democracy to be found, there will never be a proper referendum! NO! NEVER! As long as they can FOOL the majority of fools of the nation and these lot (chiefs and villagers and the rest of the FF supporters) suck up to them and make headlines all the time by their pathetic bumb-sucking statements to these illegal thugs, ALL IS GONE TO DOGS! Because there is more to come. You are only giving them more slack, cant you people see that??

  68. I totally agree with Ro KEPA. British Royalty is full of adultery, lies and deceit. The British robbed the colonies with money and resources and did little development in return. Look at African countries and the state they are in now. They looted india and as they left created division between muslims and indian which led to creation of Pakistan and India. Their western culture is destroying the rest of the world, drinks, drugs, prostitution, adultery, etc. They are Kafirs. In NZ, Aus, Canada and USA 90% of all top jobs are held by them. There fore we should a new flag depicting Tabua, Fijian Culture, Dove and some elements of multiracialism. Don't think whites as superior and fair race.. On the face they will say something and do something else behind. At least Chinese and Indians are hardworking people and straight shooters

The present flag is a historical flaw and error which after colonial times has in turn become a mistake for this Country.

A wise man once said that quote " AN ERROR BECOMES A MISTAKE IF WE REFUSE TO CORRECT IT" unquote

Now is the time to correct this Error, now is the time to rectify this Mistake.

It is our Duty as the Fiji First Government to prevent this Colonial Error becoming a Historical Mistake!

This is what you said "The British robbed the colonies with money and resources and did little development in return".
IMPLYING THAT THE BRITISH ROBBED FIJI.

THIS IS A DELIBERATE LIE being spread by Kaiyum and Bainimarama....

Rahul and Kamlesh need to go back to school and learn their HISTORY..

FIJI WAS NOT INVADED BY THE BRITISH, like India or Pakistan etc etc

FIJI WAS "CEDED" TO GREAT BRITAIN BY THE CHIEFS OF FIJI.

DO YOU FFP ARSEHOLES KNOW THE MEANING OF THAT WORD?

DO YOU KAMLESH AND RAHUL KNOW THE MEANING OF THAT WORD?

    YOU FARKING ARSEHOLES!
THE BRITISH DID NOT COME AND INVADE US.
    THEY DID NOT ROB US.
    SO FARK U!

THE CHIEFS OF FIJI HANDED OVER THEIR BELOVED COUNTRY FOR SAFEKEEPING...AND GOVERNOR GORDON RESPONDED IN LIKE MANNER.

THE BRITISH EVEN WENT TO THE TROUBLE OF EDUCATING FIJIANS, INORDER TO EVENTUALLY RULE THEIR OWN COUNTRY....hence Rt Sukuna and Rt Mara and other students were put through Queen Victoria School etc etc.

SO IF YOU THINK THE BRITISH ROBBED US...THEN FARK OFF YOU KANTS!

FIJIANS KNOW WHO HELPED THEM IN THEIR TIME OF TROUBLE....IT WAS THE BRITISH..

SO FARK OFF YOU FFP ARSEHOLES.

They spread their dirty habits like alcohol etc. They forced Christianity and that's why the iTaukeis' don't have a religion of their own. They milked Fiji by extracting Gold, Silver and Uranium. Price Charles doesn't know the father of Prince Harry. 93. while i am not a supporter of this government and while i agree we need a referendum, i have to say that this flag is very bizarre... too complicated to draw, too many colors, just... weird. all our neighbours have their "own" flags and whatever happens this year, i think it is only a matter of time before fiji changes its flag.

the colors would have to be blue, black and white like the rugby jerseys though. we just need a simple plain design without too many things on it.

  94. Nostradamus Prophecy- If the colour chosen for Fiji Flag is GREEN-that will be first sign that Khaiyum and Baini are intending to turn Fiji into Islamic State. BTW-Rumor going around my village is that Bainimarama visits mosque every Friday to pay his respects, its unbelievable but some say he is converting to Islam.....if this is in any way true than we are doomed. 99. What is wrong if Bainimarama gets converted to Islam? Islam is a religion of Science and peace. Islam teaches people to follow the right path, it is a religion of equality. Moon and stars should be in the flag because moon and stars resemble light in darkness. Green resembles environment, lush bush. Without environment we wouldn't survive.

  100. A bit of history wouldnt harm anyone, thus Question: How was Fiji Ceded to the Queen?
Answer: By devious and cunning means, you see,the shack that got burnt down on Nukulau was burnt by drunkard caucasians that night and blamed on the Natives, but no native [i-taukei] was on the island that night since it was taboo for natives to drink liquor in the presence of whites,Segragation was the 'Rule of Law'The blame was shifted to the natives and since no money was invented then, they cunningly ceded a whole Nation as a good bargain for a burnt shack.

Then they set up their Govt and made Segregation the law,Fijians were PROHIBITED to enter,Bars,Nightclubs and even schools, the natives were to do their merrymaking and business in the bush like animals.

Native Land were sold left right and center, estates were set up, land boundaries reduced and even white women were offered to high Chiefs and vise versa as good bargaining chips.

Gold and other precious ore were mined and most land and rivers were polluted killing many innocent natives.

Measles followed the ships to Fiji and almost wiped out the entire Native population.

They deleted records and made up new ones making or putting their own bastard children in line of the thrones of leadership of most Native Tribes.

Christianity was then introduced and it was the missionaries who argued against the Colonists and fought for several issues including -educating the natives, the natives to be treated as humans, natives to be taught how to work, manage etc and the removal of Segregation.

Suva Grammar School was once an English only school,no natives were allowed because we were deemed as sub-human but later as they learnt more of the natives they realised we had our own native customary or traditional laws, governance and leaderssimilar to a Kingdom,we had our own Kings, heralds, soldiers, craftsmen, fisherman and even clans that serve to bury royalty only similar to the Egyptians.

They enslaved Indians and other Islanders and forced them into labour camps to generate revenue for the Queen all done in the name of Democracy.

Then they forced the natives to respect and salute a piece of cloth they tied to a long pole, add a few symbols on it and generate respect for it as in the time of Nebhucadnezzer Emperor of Babylon, he made a golden image of himself that the whole world bowed, saluted and respected, it was psycological warfare -to instill fear and respect upon the masses even when the Emperor or Ruler is out of the Country,to keep ORDER on the land and govt.

This idea was adopted by many rulers where a Flag was used instead but it contains symbols of authority to generate fear and respect upon the masses,no need for gold statues, flags will do now to instill order and prevent chaos.

It was a paradigm shift on the strategy to win minds and hearts.

It was Babylon that introduced this system on the world and has conguered the minds of all those Sodelpa supporters swearing and cursing on this blog site.

  102. The Deed of Cession of Fiji to Great Britain
    10TH OCTOBER, 1874

Note. - One original of the Deed of Cession was retained in Fiji, and until the late thirties of the present century was in the archives of the Colonial Government. It began to show signs of wear, however; and photostat facsimiles - from one of which the following text is taken - were made for local use, the original being placed in safe keeping.

The two interlineations, referred to in the Interpreter's certificate, initialled by him in the margin, and indicated below by asterisks, were as follows: (1) in Sir Hercules Robinson's title, the adjective honorable, used for the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, was altered to distinguished; (2) the article the was transposed from a position before bona fide to that given in the text. The only other alterations were the correction of certain individual letters, and the deletion of the phrase and the laws, which had been duplicated in copying.

Instrument of Cession of the Islands of Fiji by Thakombau, styled Tui Viti and Vuni Valu, and by the other high Chiefs of the said islands to Her Most gracious Majesty Victoria, by the grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith, &c &c &c:

Whereas divers of the subjects of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland have from time to time settled in the Fijian group of islands and have acquired property or certain pecuniary interests therein; And Whereas the Fijian Chief Thakombau styled Tui Viti and Vuni Valu and the other high native chiefs of the said islands are desirious [sic] of securing the promotion of civilization and Christianity and of increasing trade and industry within the said islands; And Whereas it is obviously desirable, in the interests as well of the native as of the white population, that order and good government should be established therein; And Whereas the said Tui Viti and other high chiefs have conjointly and severally requested Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland aforesaid to undertake the government of the said islands henceforth; And Whereas in order to the establishment of British government within the said islands the said Tui Viti and other the several high chiefs thereof for themselves and their respective tribes have agreed to cede the possession of and the dominion and sovereignty over the whole of the said islands and over the inhabitants thereof and have requested Her said Majesty to accept such cession,- which cession the said Tui Viti and other high chiefs, relying upon the justice and generosity of Her said Majesty, have determined to tender unconditionally,- and which cession on the part of the said Tui Viti and other high chiefs is witnessed by their execution of these presents and by the formal surrender of the said territory to Her said Majesty; And Whereas His Excellency Sir Hercules George Robert Robinson, Knight Commander of the most distinguished* order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Governor Commander in Chief and Vice Admiral of The British Colony of New South Wales and its dependencies, and Governor of Norfolk Island, hath been authorised and deputed by Her said Majesty to accept on Her behalf the said Cession:

    2. That the form or constitution of government, the means of the maintenance thereof, and the laws* and regulations to be administered within the said islands shall be such as Her Majesty shall prescribe and determine.

    3. 4. That the absolute proprietorship of all lands not shown to be now alienated so as to have become bona fide the* property of Europeans or other foreigners or not now in the actual use or occupation of some Chief or tribe or not actually required for the probable future support and maintenance of some chief or tribe shall be and is hereby declared to be vested in Her said Majesty her heirs and successors.

That shack that got accidently burnt at Nukulau, in 1849, belonged to the American Consul ( who had bought the whole island for $30).
It burnt because a canon went astray during their American Independence day Celebration.
Fijian Natives from the mainland rowed their canoes there and looted the remains.

The Americans demanded US$43,531 for the looted stuff ( THEY BOUGHT THE WHOLE FARKING ISLAND FOR $30 FOR FARKS SAKES)

IF IT WASNT FOR THE BRITISH, YOU TUI SONA AND ALL YOUR RELATIVES WOULD HAVE BECOME FARKING SLAVES ON THE COTTON FARMS OF VIRGINIA.

YOU FFP PEOPLE ARE SO FARKING STUPID.

Prime Minister Bainimarama is a FARKED UP MORON.

Tui Sona do you know what the Americans did to the Indigenous people of America. They rounded them up and shot them. Even after these Indigenous people taught them on how to grow Corn and eat it.

They shot them and then rounded up the rest and put them on RESERVATIONS.

That is where your relatives would be living if it were not for the British.

Today thousands are in the B.Army and many have died serving in Middle East plus the secret wars by special forces like the SAS.

The deed of cession was drafted in English translated into Fijian but the Fijians werent able to read both. They relied upon verbal translation so no one really knew what was said to my namesake.

Ma'afu wasnt literate either, his mission was to spread Protestanism in this case Methodism in Fiji.

When Natives like Avolosi R. Nawai wanted to form the labour union and set up Fijian owned companies like 'Viticauravou' the Colonial Govt forbade this and branded him and his workmates criminals,he suffered much and was arrested and banished to Yacata and died later on Yanuca Island,Taveuni.

Why werent Native Fijian given the right to form labour unions and the right to set up their own corporate companies during Colonial Times? Had they been allowed we would have been far advanced or ahead in the world of business today.

Many co-ops were run by Native Fijians and were so succesful but have fallen out due to negative analysis by Colonial Administrators.

Even Coconut Oil was branded as not good for health whereas the latest test have revealed the opposite, we live in the world of business Ma'afu where huge companies stand to lose millions if we stop buying e.g. Canola,Soya BEan and other oils from the market. There is no niche for Coconut Oil because they want it to remain that way.

    I will leave now

I think you will find that Maafu was literate. He also had literate men in his regiments. His kailoma regiments had the sons of half Tongan/ Half Lauan/ Half palagi families (mainly German) who knew how to read and write because they were raised in Methodist schools.

That is why Maafu had access to Mauser weaponry. His success was because he had an intelligent military structure. It was small but it was lethal.

The only places where he had trouble was when his men failed to follow commands, such as when Wainiqolo attacked Wairiki without authority and/or when he had problems within the Lau group against warriors who were as trained and as well armed and as tactically proficient as the main Tongan regiments, such as at the entrance to Matuku where the Tongan fleet sent to the Yasayasa was destroyed by the Ketei Tiliva.

The British stabalised the Cakobau Government which then allowed for the formation of the Fijian State and gave us the systems of laws and Government which is the foundation of our nationhood today. That is their legacy. Without it the modern Fijian state would never have been formed.

If you go to Lomaloma you will see the remains of the shooting range where the Lauan Regiments practised their marksmanship. It is still there today, and after Cession the British used it when part of the Native constabulary set up an outpost at Lomaloma.

Maafu guys did write books. The first books in this country were written in Tongan.

The first working Parliament in Fiji was set up by Maafu in Lau.

Under Maafu's government from the age of 5 all Lauan children were required to go to school.

When King George came here with the three regiments to solve Cakobau's problems at Kaba (he came with the Tongatapu, Haapai and Vavau regiments) and they were complemented by the Kailoma and Lauan regiments from Lau before they proceeded to Kaba for the final battle which secured Cakobau's position in the Rewa - Bau wars.

The disciplined and literate Tongan and Lauan regiments destroyed the ill-disciplined and illiterate militia's who were causing chaos on the Delta.

After that Cakobau and King George went from village to village up the Delta and into the interior to accept their soro.

Cakobau's personal chaplain was Joeli Pulu (aka Joeli Bulu) who was, before he became Christian, and axeman in the army of Ulukalala of Vavau.

When Joeli Bulu became Christian he went to school (with the Methodist Missionaries) and learnt to read and write and came to Fiji as a missionary with his Tongan bible, because he was literate.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Joeli Bulu is well known in Fijian history for an incident in Rewa where he killed a shark with his bare hands after it attacked him.

After he put down his axe as an axeman for Ulukalala, he took up the pen and paper and learnt to read and write and turned to Christ.

  120. Hehe, the truth according to Tui Viti. The grand strategist who wanted us to align in the End Times with Gog and Magog is now lecturing us on history!

That's almost as hilarious as Julab Dean preaching to us about how Islam is the religion of science and peace.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Tui Viti, still copycatting V for Vendetta, seems to have forgotten that it was the American consul's Fourth of July fireworks that got out of hand. That wasn't the British. But hey, one caucasian looks like another, ey? And here I thought it was supposed to be SODELPA who were the racists!

    ReplyDelete
  122. The Americans wanted Fiji, and were in competition with the British, so they "cunningly" pressured Fiji's chiefs into ceding Fiji to Britain? Does that make sense to you? Me, neither, but that's what Tui Viti is telling us.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Julab Dean says the British "spread their dirty habits like alcohol etc", but here is Tui Viti whinging that the British prohibited Fijian entry to bars and nightclubs. Can't these regime apologists ever agree on a common lie?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Here Julab Dean laments the loss of Fijian bush, and Tui Viti the sale of native lands. Do they really feel that the amount of crown and freehold land in Fiji is too much and should have remained bush? Curious how in other postings they decry that the iTaukei still control too much land and don't cultivate enough of it. I do wish they'd make up their minds.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I especially enjoyed Tui Viti's statement that "even white women were offered to high chiefs and vise versa [sic]”. Vice versa? So, high chiefs were offered to white women? I daresay that even today some of the high chiefs are offering themselves to white women.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Tui Viti complains about the mining of gold under the British but doesn't seem to mind the mining of bauxite under the Chinese. I guess that's different.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Foreign diseases killed many Fijians, but inoculations by the British also saved many. Most of the whalers who visited Fiji weren't British. If the diseases hadn't come then, is there any doubt but that they would have come with the girmitya or with the Second World War or with tourism?

    ReplyDelete
  128. Deleting records and putting their own favourites in line for titles describes the Bainimarama regime more than it does British colonial administration, which was generally quite efficient in record-keeping.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Julab Dean says the British forced Christianity on Fijians, which is why we don't have a religion of our own. Christianity wasn't forced on us. Our chiefs embraced it, and then so did we. Christianity is the greatest blessing that ever came to Fiji. Were it not for Christianity, Julab Dean would have simmered in a lovo long before now.

    ReplyDelete
  130. If we don't have our own religion, then neither do the British, since Christianity originated in Palestine. But as I see it, it IS very much our own religion, because it rests on our own personal relationship with Our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ.

Should we replace this religion with Islam, which came from Arabia? Is that somehow less foreign? The "religion of science" that regards women as property and whose proponents execute those women deemed too highly educated? The "religion of peace" whose proselytes lop the heads off children who refuse to convert? The "high morality" whose warriors burn their unarmed captives alive in steel cages?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Another strange statement by Tui Viti about how the British "enslaved" Indians and "forced" them into labour camps to toil for the Queen in the name of democracy. I guess Tui Viti never heard of the Wilberforce laws. He seems unaware that the British have done more than anyone to end the institution of slavery. He also seems to forget that Indians wanted to come to Fiji, in order to escape their servitude and poverty in India and Pakistan.

By the way, the Queen represents the institution of monarchy, not democracy. With a pseudonym like his, you'd think the self-appointed "Tui Viti" would know that. He sounds more like a monarchist than a democrat to me.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Never mind that the British also brought us sufferage, education, the rule of law, the Constitution, an independent judiciary, a free press, the GCC, etc. I guess those no longer count for anything, since we've already thrown those away.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Finally, there's the question of the flag. Following Tui Viti's reasoning, we shouldn't have a flag at all. The "genius" of this man! This is the "truth" he says will set us free.

Julab Dean would like our flag to be Islamic green and bear the crescent moon symbol of Islam. He thinks that would better represent us. Does that sound like the Fiji you know? Also, isn't the FFP supposed to champion a multicultural Fiji for ALL religions? That leads me to wonder, since Christians still outnumber Muslims in Fiji, would Julab Dean also agree to a red cross in a field of blue on a banner of white?

These are just the opinions of two FFP supporters. If you agree with them, then you've got the regime you want and probably deserve. But bear in mind that other FFP supporters have other ideas as well. Some suggest a talanoa. Rather than symbols of the Commonwealth and the rule of law, they would prefer we salute a drawing of a grog bowl. Now THAT should inspire awe and instill order!

Thanks to the FFP for another brilliant idea, brought to us by the same people who think we're better off under the leadership of Khaiyum and Bainimarama than we were under Ratu Sukuna and Queen Elizabeth II.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Tui Viti, why aren't Fijians given the right to set up labour unions under Bainimarama?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Yes and the word "BULA" is now a racist word as it does not represent the indians. Its a itaukei word. How about changing it to "BULASTE" Oh wait but won't this confuse the Tourists. No need for a referendum just change the bloody thing. We need to change everything that is seen to symbolise only one race to that, that encompasses the new Fiji so says the Fijian Government. Oh crikey there goes the Tabua and the Fijian traditional ceremonies as well. We also need to get rid of anything that symbolises our past and no longer represents the new Fiji. Forget the British and Military Coups. Wait a minute, coups? That will entail an amendment to our New Constitution and the removal of the word immunity. Nope, we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot. Oh well AI will soon takeover humanity and everything we do will be insignificant. Has anyone carried out a Coup using AI?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Flag is a minor thing but we should be questioning about corruption as highlighted by Fiji Leaks. I am a Fiji Indian but if there is a change please retain the Tabua, dove, the picture of the Fijian person etc. I agree that Union Jack should be gone. Who gives a hoot to Monarch's now days? Every one is equal. The white race is therefore equal as the itaukei and indian person. The British on one hand may have given few good thing but equally they introduced many bad things. In Fiji they used the Chiefs for their own advantage. Did they built Fijian villages? Did they provide water, electricity and road to Fijian villages, etc? They used Fijian money to make things in Fiji. To suggest white woman is better and trophy wives than itaukei , muslim and indian women. Remember the white woman sleeps with twenty to thirty man before marriage and their marriage doesnot last. England is collapsind because of its past Karma.

  143. No point arguing about the flag. It wasn't bled for.

Ratu Sukuna said that you have to bleed for something that valued. That is what he said to the Itaukei Chiefs when he was raising the first call for the Solomons campaign. He said it is earned in steel and blood.

The Union Jack is bathed in the blood of many battles, in the defence of the British homeland and of her foreign possessions.

Speaking of which I can't see the Aussies and Kiwi's changing their flags. There is too much meaning and value to them in those flags.

It means something because thousands of their young men died in battlefields all over the world carrying those flags.

That is why they will never remove the Union Jack from their flags.

Their regiments get their colours from the Queen. Whenever she visits Australia and New Zealand she gives new colours to different regiments.

We can change this flag because it means nothing. That's the long and short of it.

Easy come, easy go because we have no tradition of loyalty or hard fought glory.

    1987 proves that.

So lets not argue about something which means nothing because all the battles which our regiments fought and died were under Rile Britannia. Under the Union Jack. Starting with the only VC ever earned in the history if this country.

  148. If it weren't for those "British and Persian thieves," India would have no latrines for half of the people. They'd be defecating in the street.

Which actually describes present-day India, even after 2-3 generations of independence. The Kamlesh Kumars of India are still waiting for someone to build them a toilet. Meanwhile, they blame their lack of sanitation on foreign exploitation.

  149. Put it this way, its like changing underwear. This one has gotten holes in it and according to the Government is past its use by date. There's probably also a smattering of urine and faeces on it.

Hence we need a new underwear.

That seems to be the logic.

In 2000 Col Seruvakula pointed to this flag when he addressed the 3FIR at Delainabua as the rebellion reached fever pitch at Parliament.

He spoke of loyalty to the flag because it signifies everything that is meaningful and dear.

Today it seems like that was another lifetime....its just another underwear reaching its use by date.

    So much for that

    ReplyDelete
  150. When Fidel Castro marched into Havana he did not change the Cuban flag.

His revolution changed everything else except the Cuban flag because that flag had been bled for. It represented something of value and meaning for the Cuban people. They had died for that flag during the battle for Independence from the Spanish and Fidel Castro marched down from the mountains to change the power structures in Havana because he believed in a better purpose for that flag.

Instead of changing the Cuban flag Fidel Castro created a new flag for the 26th of July Movement which has been the vanguard of the Revolution that unseated Batista.

When the Cuban boxers warp themselves in the flag of Cuba at the Olympics its from the heart. Truly from the heart. Their grandfathers died in glory for that flag.

They sweat blood and tears to stand at the Olympics wrapped in their flag because they and their trainers worked so hard to gain that glory for their motherland Cuba and her flag.

It represents their heritage and their future.

That is the same feeling with the All Blacks. What drives that whole organisation. It hurts them deep when that flag has to come second best in any Rugby Test match. The recrimination and angst and doubling of effort (increasing the budget for the training and preparations and looking high and low for every advantage)after every defeat because that glory tied to that flag is of value to them. Their whanau died on the battlefields of Gallipoli and all across the world for that flag.

We lose at the Rugby and get thrashed every time we meet the top tier teams because it really means nothing. If it meant something we would hurt for it. We don't, we only talk about it and that's because its is not tied into anything, not even the flag which is now being changed. The FRU can't even raise peanuts to properly set up the Sevens team, forget about the Fifteens.

  165. The reason why Fiji has never won any 7s series in these past few years is because the selected team members have lost their faith in the leaders of the nation who are really corrupt dictators.

Bainimarama and Khaiyum were corrupt dictators from the 2006-2014 regime and are still corrupt dictators after the so called democratic elections last year.

The 7's teams' past victories and glories have all been thrown into the garbage dumps by these common dictators vying only for fame, power and money which they could not achieve honestly through hard work and following proper rules, regulations and channels. The teams have lost their morale and the flag which used to represent and portray high standards of courage and loyalty coupled with honesty and patriotism is now to be disregarded and ignored at the whims of common thieves.

If this flag is to be removed, then there is nothing to fight and be patriotic for.

The reason why has nothing to do with the flag and everything to do with preparation.

Having racehorses is one thing but training stayers is another thing altogether.

There are no prima donna's in Tietjens team. Just pine trees. Hard as fuck and dependable.

Ioane was interviewed after the game with South Africa (this is the 17 year old Auckland Grammar kid who Tietjens has put on his run on team this season), he was asked how he felt about scoring the try.

He said he was relieved. Just happy he didn't drop the ball.

If that's the mentality of the youngest guy in your team, who hasn't even started shaving and is still in school, then you have a team of hard yeomen in your side and 9 times out of 10 your boys will come home with the bacon.

You can rely on your boys. They take their work seriously.

name. Do you want to know who threw the queen in 1987? Ans. SODELPA. People who are in SODELPA were members of the Taukei nationalist. They used poor Rabuka to overthrow the government in 1987 and ditched him later. Where is Qarase now? He has ditched all SODELPA members and living in USA?

  175. Late Princess Diana loved muslims vudis so much. She wanted to marry the muslim DR and when he refused she went with DODI. In England white girls die for muslim men. The Nadroga Princess married ASK and ASK children are half itaukeis. What does it say about muslim men? Why have union Jack when it is soiled with adultery, stolen treasures, corruption etc. It is a disgraced to our Chiefs as British gave white girls to them. These girls may have given HIV to the chiefs.

  176. The Fijian economy expanded by an estimated 4.2 per cent in 2014, led mainly by construction; financial intermediation; manufacturing and wholesale; retail trade, hotels and restaurants sectors. Did SODELPA(SDL) achieve this? Ans No way near despite getting aid from overseas.

  178. So thank you very much one and all on this blogsite for your encouraging views to assist me in changing the Fiji Flag. I have set the good example of paying these nuclear pensioners who were denied their pensions by the British.

NOW - ITS TIME TO CHANGE THE FLAG AND MOST WILL ABIDE BY MY CLEVERLY LAID PLANS..TAKE NEW ZEALAND FOR EXAMPLE ----

Update: 5:16PM THE chairman of the New Zealand Nuclear Test Veterans Association, Roy Shelton says it is the UK and not Fiji which should be compensating Fiji's nuclear test veterans.

His comments come after Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama announced he could no longer wait for Britain and the veterans will be paid by his government.

The men are to get about five thousand US dollars each.

But Roy Shelton says no amount of money can compensate for the impact of the nuclear tests on veterans lives.

"The British government really needs to do the honourable thing. I think really it's got to be the only government in the world that doesn't give some meaningful recognition to its veterans and we include ourselves in that."

  179. Any investigative action Would result in a harsh reaction
Removing Indians out was part of their Mission

To stop investigation into FDB and NBF financial corruption
In 1997, Rabuka stopped both banks investigation

And ignored Commission of Inquiry’s submission
Corrupted politicians sang the song of objection

    Demanding suppression of their exploitation
The 2000 coup repeated a corrupt tradition

    Instigated racial tension
The rebels brought the government to oppression

    And abrogated the 1997 Constitution
    After 2001 General Election

Qarase tried to release coup fathers on compulsory supervision
    Military objected vomiting their dissatisfaction

But SDL failed to swallow the dangers of their miscalculation
The rebels who wrote the psalms of Commander’s termination

    Dividing military and causing affliction.
Meeting with GCC brought no satisfaction

Corrupted politicians tried to brainwash the entire population
    Race hatred was in circulation

In 2006, Bainimarama commanded; stop corruption.

Qarase and Kepa lost nation concentration
And Military took over to free us all from racial discrimination.

Now our future leaders enjoy free education
    Without worrying about transportation

    So what's changed idiot?

Now you have the Chinese girls.

  181. Very interesting how the Fiji Military are appearing too often on t.v. News broadcast highlights too much on every little insignificant thing that goes on that really doesn't require over-exposure.

So they all agree to the change of flag and are asked to enter the colour-in competition?

What about a referendum first from the people?

Dont be surprised people if someone from the military wins this competition.

    All staged.

Its called a 'false flag' in the US.

    BEWARE THE 15th March

    ReplyDelete
  184. I was at Government Buildings the morning the Gun carriage came down from Government House.

The Gun carriage came down the drive to the Scipio. The slow march of the Grenadiers. In their red tunics and white sulu the escort looked every bit an infantry regiment in the British foot guards tradition, save for there being no head dress a privilege unique to the Fijian troops of Her Majesty in deference to the custom of the Itaukei who do not wear head dress (only Itaukei Chiefs are allowed to wear headdress in an Itaukei gathering).

At the trooping last year the RFMF gave the eyes right as they quick marched past the His Excellency the President (and the Commander in Chief) to the March of the British Grenadiers.

Will those traditions now go to ? Assigned to the dustbin of history as being colonial relics ?

    ReplyDelete
  185. If you people from other provinces dont like Bainimarama & Khaiyum plus FFP Leadership, Why you set up your own provincial government and your vanua and lotu. This is the best strategy to break the back of these two idiots and the useless itaukei who supported them.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Will the RFMF still use the scarlet red of the British Army ?

That scarlet red is the colour of the New model Army which was passed into law by the English Parliament in 1645.

The only reason why our RFMF is wearing it is because it came from the British Army when the RFMF was part of Her Majesty's Armed Forces.

And will the RFMF continue to use the Red and Green tie of the British Army ?

Or will these have to go too as relics of the colonial past ?

    ReplyDelete
  187. Is the Sam Browne now also a colonial relic to go out too ?

    ReplyDelete
  188. So if all this stuff is a relic of the colonial past then how come they are being kept ?

The Sam Browne is a British military attire - of Sir Sam Browne VC of the 2nd Regiment of the Punjab Cavalry of the British Army in India.

The Red scarlet of the RFMF belongs to the New model army of the British

Even the ranking and the insignia for ranks in the RFMF is copied from the British Army starting from the Private all the way to the Brigadier General.

Are these all relics of the past too ?

    ReplyDelete
  189. And anyway why are we speaking English in the Fijian parliament ?

Isn't English now supposed to be a relic of the colonial past too ?

  191. In 2000, the Commander saved Parliament,
part of his plot for our enslavement.

The coup was his, he planned it,
but when it failed, he panned it.

By 2006, he was back and yearning.
With naked ambition he was burning.

Through treason he seized the seat of power
Before his guns the people cower.

Clean government is what he promised.
What he delivered was all corruption.

Interim rule he said it would be.
    Just for life now, apparently.

Democracy is a relic of the past. A new dawn for the New Fiji. National socialism is the way of the future.

  195. So does the "Last Post" qualify as a relic of the Colonial Past too ?

Are we going to have a competition for the composition of a new tune to replace the "Last Post" ?

And the new tune must not be in B flat either because that's the note on which the British Infantry play THEIR LAST POST WHICH THEY WROTE IN THE 17th CENTURY.

This is the problem when we call the British Union Jack a relic of the past and forget that its absolutely tied in with our Institutions and traditions and military heritage and there is a reason why its up there in the corner of the current flag.

Otherwise the whole thing will be like a fake diamond. Na kena i vatakarakara walega.

Floating around in the stratosphere without any heritage and without any meaning and ultimately without any cultural and historical value or symbolism
